Post-Blake.. 2018 Off-Season

Post#1 » by blueadams » Sun Feb 4, 2018 8:49 pm

So.. we're going to have no cap-space (literally), no draft pick, and a lot of needs..

*****

1) Going over the cap to pick up the team option on Bullock seems like a no-brainer. He's had a solid year, -0.10 RPM, -0.69 DRPM, 44% from 3.
2) Going over the cap to resign Tolliver (should he not retire) also seems like a no-brainer. He's had a solid year, 1.18 RPM, 0.60 DRPM, 41% from 3.

*****

Ideally, it'd be nice to surround Dre and Blake with 3 3&D players..

-At PG.. Reggie, not a great 3-pt shooter at 34%. Ish, a bad 3-pt shooter at 24%.
-On the wing.. Stanley, certainly not a good 3-pt shooter at 27%. Bullock solid at 44%. Kennard solid at 42%. Langston okay at 36%.

*****

To improve..

1). Stanley. I love Stanley. He's young. He's on a good contract. He's a great and improving defender. Great intangibles. Lot of play-making abilities. Tons of upside. But.. he can't shoot 3's, and he's probably never going to, and we need someone who can. I'd shop him hard to find out whatever we can get. A point or wing who drains from 3 and plays decent D. Hopefully we can find something?

2) Reggie and Leuer have big contracts. If there's a worse one out there that belongs to a 3&D guy who could help us out.. make it happen. Hopefully we can find something. Not really banking on it.

3) Cap Exceptions. Gotta be some 3&D guys who will be available at this rate.

Any ideas gentlemen, ladies?

PG: Ish
SG: Kennard
SF: Bullock
PF: Griffin, Tolliver
C: Drummond, Reed

Those are the only players I would keep, move the rest to fill the spots.

We have two packages:
Reggie+Stanley
Leuer+Ellenson+second round

Our roster is almost set for next season

Drummond / Moreland / Leuer
Blake / Tolliver / Ellenson
Bullock / SJ
Kennard / Galloway
Reggie / Ish / Buycks

All we need is another winger and that's it.

Don't think we'll see a lot of changes. Obviously would be great to have an upgrade at the wings and an upgrade at backup C but it's unlikely.

Our only trade assets would be Ish's Bullock's and SJ's expirings, Luke and our 1st round pick.

MLE will have to be spent on Tolliver, so that isn't even an option. But we will have Boban TPE for $7M to use.

Do we need to use the MLE to resign one of our own players?? I didn't think we did. I thought we could use the MLE, LLE and then go over the cap to resign our own guys..

Joe Johnson is having a really, really bad season. He might be through. Monta hasn't even played an NBA game this yr.

Any better ideas?

We did use the LLE to sign Tolliver this season. It's listed he signed one year, but that doesn't make a lot of sense, someone mentioned here that he has a 2nd year and it's a team option or something like that.

If he doesn't have a 2nd year, we'll need to sign him using one of the exceptions (we don't have his bird rights since we only signed him to a 1 year deal, we need to give him 3 years deal to have his rights), either the vet's minimum or the MLE, or part of the MLE, we don't have the LLE next year since we use it this year.

Not much to add aside from my belief that 3&D players alone wont get it done. Ish is awesome but normally we have the luxury of him coming off the bench, and at the moment it's putting too much of the ball handling/playmaking responsibility on Blake imo.

Reggie will be a big help as long as he doesn't end up at only ~70% like last season when he returned. It'll take some time to get his rhythm back of course.

It doesn't have to be Reggie, but my point is that another dynamic scoring/playmaking threat alongside Blake/Dre is a necessity.

I completely agree about the need of a perimeter playmaker to take the next step. I do think we’ll be in a position to make things interesting in the summer of 19. Reggie / Galloway / Leuer will represent ~$30+ mil in expiring deals, we’ll be free to trade any draft pick and Kennard / Stanley may emerge as a young centerpiece for a big time trade.

I think any trade begins with selling SJ as a still young potential and Ellenson as well.

But a new PG that can play good defense and have a playmaking attitude will serve us well.

We might honestly be forced to keep SJ because he need a cheap wing option for next year we're already thin on the wings. Hard to trade for rotation players who make the same or less than him.
