Maxing drummond would handicap us with little money to get actual upgrades at the 1,2,3 spot. A team without a legit point guard and having starters like snell and bruce brown isn't getting you anywhere especially with load management in blake/rose.

He is that player we saw in the first several games...sometimes. The trouble is, Drummond supporters need to acknowledge that he's ALSO the guy we've seen in the last 2 games, and for a rather significant portion of the time. That isn't an anomaly, it's something we've all seen before. He's both. And when you average that out, he's not a max guy.
Facts.
This is what I need to hear from folks that make comments like this. Who else are we going to get in "Detroit" that produces numbers like Drummond? I'll wait......
In these situations you max players like Dre out and put two other players around him that can help us win. I like Blake, but we need guards and a wing!

That's the problem. Drummond isn't the guy whose presence vaults teams to another level, like Blake, for instance. He needs star quality players around him. But if you max Drummond out, there's not enough money left over to put enough quality players around him to make a winning team. Theoretically.
Drummond is playing better this season overall, and his double-double numbers are always great, but unlike most franchise max players, there are holes in Drummond's game that tend to dampen the impact of those numbers.

Ok, I get it. Some of you guys don't think Dre is the guy we need in Detroit. Again, can someone please, please, please play GM and tell me who else are we going to get that puts up numbers like Drummond in Detroit?
Also why we can't continue to build around a 20pts and 16rebs guy? I mean, we still have 1st round picks to trade, Luke can be traded, Blake can be traded, Reggie's in the last year of his contract. We can make moves to make us better.

I don’t know who it is. We haven’t drafted them yet.
Not being a free agent draw isn’t a reason to pay a guy who isn’t worth it.
This is the attitude that leads to overpaying to keep mediocre cores together.

So you want to trust our front office (who's terrible at drafting players since they fired Dumars) to draft a player that can produce like Drummond?
Everyone in the league overpays. Our problem is keeping mediocre problems like Jackson, Luke and Snell. Not taking chances on players like Westbrook. Then letting players leave with no return like Monroe and KCP. And finally signing coaches like SVG who sign trash players and draft bust.

If we’re arguing that our front office can’t draft at all and will never get anyone good then none of this matters.
We’ll never have the assets to get good either way. Either draft well or die, especially if you’re not an elite market.
You don’t build a winner by giving guys money they don’t deserve. You lock yourself into mediocrity that way.
True max guys aren’t overpaid. Teams win when they have those guys. It’s the only way to get that bang for your buck.

Here's the difference. I believe Dre is a max player so he won't be overpaid. You don't let a continously
healthy 26yr old guy who gives you 19 and 16 away, you continue to build around him. Especially if the guy wants to be here.
But let me ask you because I believe you don't think Dre's a max player. If we dont give Dre the money, what would you use the money on? Are you going to use it on role players while we attempt to rebuild? Will you spend it on another young center?

the front office doesnt need to use the cap right away preserve it for trades/FA if there's good young talent out there spending money just to spend will get you nowhere.
