Garza getting a regular contract opens up a two way contract for us. I can imagine preseason is what the players will be fighting for that last spot.

glad garza got a real deal, even if he doesn't pan out his hustle and work ethic will be good to have in practices, plus he can play in the g league anyways if they want him to get playing time.

This is excellent news. It's not like Garza is some scrub, he the college player of the year (twice if memory serves)and can shoot the absolute hell out of the ball, rebounds, and lives under the basket when he needs to. Great touch around the basket, with excellent footwork. Craziest thing about this, is that if he was picked 10 years ago, he would absolutely been picked in the top 10, more then likely the top 5.

Jamorko(I just cant get used to his name)getting a 2-way is also excellent news as well. His play i think was a universal surprise to everyone here.

I am officially in love with the Pistons current roster. #1 pick, all rookie sophomore(s) returning, shooters galore at every position, some excellent defenders at critical positions, and young talent exploding from the seams.

What a difference a damn year makes people.

Remember, OCTOBER 6TH THE PRESEASON STARTS.(The preseason as a whole start on October 3rd)

Agreed... much happier to see us use that 15th spot to upgrade what we offer Garza and lock him into that 2nd year at the minimum.... This way he doesn't come out and have a surprising rookie year and end up with a bigger deal next summer. He certainly earned it with his summer league play and I'm sure he will continue to impress with his play going into Preseason. I certainly see a bit of Mehmet Okur in him... if he can end up half that good we certainly got a 2nd round steal.

Also great to upgrade Pickett as well who player really well for us in Summer League and I think is a going to work hard nosed type player (from the little bit I've seen).... Hopefully he gets a lot of time down with the Cruise working on his game this season.

Really excited for Tuesday to get here and to start training camp. It's been a long month time since Summer League has ended hopefully we'll see a lot more from the young guys in Preseason. I'm for sure going to try to make it out to one of our Preseason games.

Pistons also have an open practice coming up that's free as well. I may venture down and check out a preseason game as well now that you mention it. That Spurs game (1st game)is for sure going to have all the rookies in it.

Hmm. Now the gears are working...

This is a roster to be proud of, really. It remains to be seen how much actual winning they do this year. This is not a roster built for the now.

Happy to see Garza will be on the roster and practicing with the Pistons this season. He can fill a role off the bench while bringing the desire and hustle to further the new culture. With Stewart and Garza involved, practices should be intense. I expect he'll work his way into the rotation sooner than we might expect. Stewart, Olynyk and Garza - the three headed beast.

The only meaningful difference in having Garza on a 2 way vs a standard contract, was he wouldn't have been eligible to play in the playoffs in the very unlikely event that Detroit even made the postseason.

So yeah, I'd MUCH prefer having the open roster spot + Garza & Pickett on 2 way contracts vs Full roster + Chris Smith & Pickett on 2 way contracts.

Just as a refresher in recent years, both Christian Wood and Kevin Porter were acquired for free via a waiver claim. You have to have an open roster spot to make a waiver claim. Having an open roster spot also provides a lot more trade flexibility/options.

In a year where there are no limits on games played or time spent with the big team, having Garza on a standard contract doesn't provide nearly as much value as the open roster spot would have. For that matter, neither does having either of Smith or Pickett on 2 ways.

I'd like to see an open roster spot for those possibilities too, but Weaver and Casey must be betting that Smith and Pickett's potential and fit outweigh any possible waiver pickups. Time will tell.
