I know some people are cautious with centers like him because he doesn't stretch out the defense but it's not like he doesn't have any range, he can step out and hit a 15 footer plus he's a beast on the boards and defensively.

He's basically what you hope Banchero is if he reaches his full potential, the player who is probably the best fit for the Pistons in the upcoming draft. You have a core of Cade, Bey, Stewart and Ayton and you have quite a foundation to build off of. Probably couldn't keep all of them long term but you worry about it when you get there. Cade and Ayton on that pick and roll would be deadly.

Agreed with the Banchero part (though I think Paolo is more of a ball-handler), but it’s the use of cap that concerns me. If you draft PB and he becomes a home grown star, sure, you pay him, but you’ve gotten value years first and you know the fit. Ayton would be a shortcut, in both the good and bad ways, and my opinion is that’s a bad idea.

Plus Chris Paul teaching him about what it takes to win also makes me feel a little bit better about giving the guy a huge four year deal. He seems much more mature than what Drummond is even today.

Love Ayton but we don't have 1 vet who could push this guy like CP3. Grant ain't going to do shet!!! Drummond ran all over Casey! If the right culture was here I wouldn't mine having him..real talk

You've been a lot more active lately than you have been historically while vege seems to have wandered off for the most part. Did you decide to stick him in a closet for a bit?

Seeing that the hangup was about years we don't even have a shot at him anyway.

Yeah I would but I think hes coveted on the market and goes somewhere else anyways if he even makes it. Sure hes more of a old school paint big but hes a great defender, plays smart, and is also a really great athlete. Hes young so if we signed him he has untapped potential.

Another thing you've got to keep in mind is if we passed on Ayton where would our money go? It can get really scary seeing what teams like us can spend on in free agency. Adding Ayton plus another top 5 pick to our team would give us a pretty exciting young roster to build with.

Chris Paul will be 37 years old going into next season. So his end days are definitely near. So I can envision a scenario where Phoenix struggles this season or Paul shows glaring signs of breaking down physically, and in turn they decide that they want to pull the plug on the Paul/Booker/Ayton core which would be ridiculously expensive moving forward. That trio alone would be north of $100 mil/season for the next 3 years. One could also make the case that Paul's age makes it more likely Phoenix wants to keep their core in tact and continue to try to run it back.

While at the same time, CP3 is still a very high quality PG that makes all of his teammates better. So I always question, how good guys actually are when they aren't playing with him any longer, especially bigs. We have seen all of Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and Clint Capela take steps back when they are no longer playing alongside CP3.

Its still an unlikely scenario that Phoenix would pull the plug on their current core, and even if they do they would look to trade Ayton at the deadline and try to get pieces to keep their team in the hunt, as opposed to just letting him walk in free agency. Or they would just resign him this summer, with eyes of trading him when the newly signed free agent trade restrictions get lifted early the next season.

If Ayton were to be traded at the deadline, he would definitely be out of play as his new team would be making the trade with 100% the intention to resign him this summer.

Long story short, I can envision a scenario where Detroit offers Ayton a max but I don't envision that scenario resulting in Ayton becoming a Piston.
