Mclemore and Bennett are currently 20yrs and only 4-5 months younger, Mitch Mcgary is actually a few months older than Shabazz. Don't get me wrong though, Shabazz is old for a freshman.

You say Shabazz's flaws out weigh his positives but things like size, length and killer instict can't be taught. I don't think he's destined to be a no defense playing ball hog his whole career because of what he did in 1 year of college. Players grow and mature over the years, and because of his drive to succeed, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he will get it together with the right system and coaching.

McLemore is a redshirt freshman (2 years removed from HS) and Bennett just turned 20 - whereas Shabazz will be turning 21 this year. He said in his combine interview that he was born in 1992.

If Shabazz hypothetically just finished his sophomore year and had about the same stat line, would it be any bigger of an issue? The reality is, he did more in his rookie season than most of the sophs, juniors and seniors did in any of their single seasons.

I agree, family issues can bother some people. But not everyone. Kobe was on trial for rape and just used that frustration to destroy teams. 'Bazz has that same mind frame. Also, while his Dad seems a little crazy, I don't think anyone believes he has anything less than the best intentions for his son.

Additionally, you can't knock somebody for their family's behavior. That simply isn't fair to judge someone like that. Tons of people, including pro athletes have strained relationships with their family, especially when money is a motivator. You think Shabazz was the first one with a "crazy" parent? Some people called Tiger Woods' father "crazy" for pushing his son too.

Piston Pete, you don't have to agree with us. We're certainly not going to be the persons who decide what player is chosen. Shabazz is a polarizing player, no question. But, I think the posters here who support the idea of picking have made a solid case in his favor.

Shabazz certainly did not do "more in his rookie season than most of the sophs, juniors and seniors did in any of their single seasons."

He scored well, and rebounded some. What else did he accomplish? His team wasn't good, he didn't have a good PER, he barely passed the ball at all, and he got beat repeatedly on the defensive side.

Sorry, a player saying he knows where he need to improve and wants to do so, is not cutting it. Not for me. Actions prove more than words in my book.

Would I be totally upset if we drafted him? No. I'd hope he would follow through and actually improve his game in many areas. I'm just saying that currently, he has as much, if not more negatives around him as positives and I'm not sure other options/players would be better for us moving forward.

It sounds like you don't want him as the 7th pick because he didn't play well enough to be the number 1 pick. If Shabazz played up to all his expectations we would'nt even be in position to draft him. Same with Drummond.

No, I'm thinking there will be better options at #7 because he didn't play well enough to be a #7 pick.

If Shabazz averaged 2+ assists per game, and played D, and was more of a team player, and didn't lie about his age, then you're right, he'd go higher than #7 and we wouldn't be in a position to draft him. But I prefer to draft a guy at #7 based off reality.

Seems like a lot of people in here are HOPING Shabazz can correct his flaws to the point that its become their reality.

IMO, Drummond had an underwhelming college career but you could still see the talent oozing out of him, he just had to put it together. With Shabazz, people are finding out he's older than he said, not as athletic and was one of worst shooters at the combine this week. I don't think they are in the same boat.

The trick will be to take the guy with the fewest and/or easiest flaws to fix.

Actually, a lot of GMs didn't see talent "oozing" from him thats why he went 9th.

Not exactly, some GMs ahead of the Pistons during that draft were afraid they would be fired from the team by the time they got any real return from Drummond.

I could give a rats ass about shooting numbers at the combine. Such a small sample size, and no defenders + a bunch of nervous young players.

This. His good shooting that he has displayed throughout the season far outweighs combine numbers when you're judging how good of a shooter he is. I'm on the Bazz bandwagon, worst case scenario - he does become a ball-stopping chucker and we can trade him for something decent, teams want scorers, that's why they get so overpaid. Best case scenario, he becomes a legit scorer in this league, learns how to pass and plays decent defence. I think he's worth the risk considering the fact we're picking at 7 and he will fill our biggest need if all goes well.
