This is all good. F--k the cap space - it really is a minor hit when stretched. But if we're rebuilding, we need to be playing the players that will be part of our future core. Smith was just eating up PF minutes and doing it horribly. Time to move forward. Great move SVG.

I honestly think we'll win more games by him not being here. Sure he filled a stat line at times, but his bball IQ was terrible, and it never occured to for him to kick the ball out to one of our many competent 3 point shooters when he was being triple teamed in the paint.

That last 3 point attempt vs Brooklyn probably sent SVG over the edge, lol.

Jennings and Datome for Steve Nash and LAL 2nd rd pick in either 15 or 16. We continue to loose but develop Dimwiddle, and get another pick. Jennings is a good deal for them. He adores Kobe, and wants to play with him. The lakers could only spend half the money they did on Nash next summer anyways since they are over the cap. They get a one yr upgrade out of it and a B Jennings tryout . Whats a second rd pick to a team like the Lakers
We need to continue to break this team down.

All of this. Stan was trying to move him since this summer and the only offer was two guys representing the same salary commitment but with less talent. We don't have any assets to include, the cap is rising and it's not like we have anyone on this team we need to pay outside of Monroe, who is likely more open to staying today than he was yesterday.

I'd say losing Josh Smith hurts the tank!

I'm turning on 2K and playing as us this afternoon because this team's likability has shot up for me :D

How about Jennings, will you be stuck with him?

Make an offer. :D
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I love how Realgm consensus has gone from ripping Josh as being the reason for everything wrong with our team to a complete 180 of "Let's pick him up, our coach and vets will totally get through to him".

It's all about cost. Smith @ vet minimum >>> Smith @ $14M.

Of course, I also think the ghost of Smith @ $5.4M / 5 years >>> the real Smith @ $14M, so I'm thrilled by this news! More than anything else, THIS is how you change a losing culture (and I'm relieved SVG didn't spend any assets / draft picks to do it).

Jennings to Houston for the TPE?

Jennings to Lakers for Nash?

Jennings/Mitchell to Orlando for Harkless/filler?

You have to take into consideration that Smith now will cost a small fraction of what he was costing the Pistons and that most of those teams are aiming to win the championship.

He is still the same atrocious player, but everyone is attracted by the idea of him playing more disciplined in an established team. If he doesn't, he'll be getting paid 1 or 2 million and can easily be cut. That's why everyone wants him now.

Imagine if Stan can move Jennings now. He will have moved to God status in like 3 months in my books.

The trifecta will be when Monroe says he wants to stay :-)

why do people wanna get rid of jennings now? he costs like half what josh smith did, is only on the books for next year and hasn't been nearly as harmful to the team as smith.

that said, if SVG felt like smith wasn't adding anything to the team, had no trade value, etc. then cutting him makes the most sense.

addition by subtraction.

I'm well aware it's about the opportunity cost, but it should stand as a pretty clear signal when our entire fanbase is ready to throw a party over paying the guy his full salary to not be here.

Then again, most of realgm thinks Pistons fans are clueless because of Dumars, so they'll all blow off what we have to say.

I think it's got a lot to do with people associating the players with each other. I don't know how many times I've seen Jennings listed as one of the absolute worst contracts in the league when he's expiring next year at slightly above the MLE. Guilt by association.
