https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/the-malik-beasley-investigation-started-18-months-ago

On Sunday, it came to light that federal authorities are investigating Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley for possible gambling-related crimes. It’s not a new development.

Beasley’s lawyer, Steve Haney, told the Detroit News that the investigation began roughly 18 months ago. It’s being overseen by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

ESPN reported that an unnamed U.S. sportsbook detected heavy betting action on Beasley’s statistics in January 2024, or thereabouts.

18 months it's been going on and still not resolved?

If its really been going on since January of 2024 and nothing has been found concrete enough to make a charge up to this point it seems unlikely that more information will be found to make a charge moving forward. Like what else could possibly come out. I was wondering why they didn't tackle this sooner but it seems like they've been working on it for a long time. Crazy that it breaks right before he's about to get paid.

Why would they announce anything if there wasn't something to it though? And I would think that the fact that they've been working it since 2024 and the case is still open is also not a good signal if there isn't anything there...

So they likely have circumstantial evidence and probably know he's guilty, but don't think they have enough to hold up in court to get a conviction.... probably tried to get him to admit/plea but he isn't going to so they are at a stalemate....

Obviously lots of speculation there but its just strange to think that more new information is going to come up this long after the fact.

Who said that they don't already have all of the evidence they need?

Once they have enough evidence they would press charges on him and/or offer him a plea deal. They haven't up to this point based on what his lawyer has stated that its an ongoing investigation.

Then if they don't have enough evidence and don't think they will be successful why even leave the case open?

We can play this game all day... it doesn't accomplish anything.

Forgive me for not knowing the numbers as of now…

But if Beasley magically gets these charges dropped tomorrow, what can we reasonably offer him at this point?

Beasley needs to be on the commissioner's exempt list until everything is cleared

They don’t think they have the evidence, so there making a show to draw attention to it hoping to hear more, and in the meantime costing him a good amount of money, probably more than any shenanigans he pulled was worth.

They almost certainly have some evidence and feel like he's probably guilty, they simply don't have enough evidence to bring the case to court. They may have even presented him with the evidence and said "hey we got you" ... "now we'll let you off easy if you admit your guilt we won't have to go to trial and you'll just get fine" and Beasley said no deal and continued to claim his innocence and whoever is doing the investigation can't get their boss to prosecute due to lack of evidence or evidence being just circumstantial.

As an FU to Beasley for not taking the plea, they let it come out publicly and cost Beasley the $42 million deal he was about to sign.

If they had enough evidence to prosecute him 6 months ago, they would have prosecuted him by now. Whoever gets to make the decision to prosecute him and bring forward changes is deciding they don't have enough on him to make that move YET.... could eventually come but they don't have it YET.

I mean, Beasley as a reckless idiot is hardly surprising. He’s about as happy-go-lucky as I’ve ever seen from an NBA player.

Probably best we got him out of the locker room. He seems to be attracted to doing the wrong things.

It would be great if we end up signing him for the minimum.

Return to Detroit Pistons
