Michael Curry’s message about playing hard every night hasn’t wavered since his introductory press conference in June. It remains to be seen how the Pistons respond to that message on a snowy December night in Milwaukee or through the dog days of February. But I’ll say this much: The first two days of training camp have been … ummm, intense. After another three-plus-hour session Wednesday morning ended with another hand-to-hand combat of a scrimmage, Arron Afflalo held his arms out, palms raised, and shook his head, looking at the welts and abrasions on his biceps and forearms. “I’ve got the most scratches of all-time,” he said, “in Pistons history.” (Somewhere, John “Crash” Mengelt is challenging that assertion.) The scratching and clawing between Rip Hamilton and Arron Afflalo is hardly the only battle within the battle of Curry’s first training camp. Kwame Brown took it into the paint, throwing the ball through the basket with his left hand while nearing throwing Cheikh Samb through with his right. Somebody hits the floor on every other possession. Every whistle brings a howl of protest. Breakdowns that lead to easy baskets – rare occurrences – draw immediate huddles to assess the cause.

But Hamilton’s perpetual feistiness and Afflalo’s off-the-charts competitiveness make their matchups perhaps the most compelling of camp. If you had no sense of basketball’s code or no understanding of Hamilton and Afflalo’s utter team-first attitude, you’d swear that after practice they’d be planning a shootout at 40 paces. Instead, they’re each other’s biggest supporters, throwbacks to a time before statistics, enormous money and an agent’s exhortations drove a wedge between individual and team goals. “I always tell him, I’m trying to mold him and teach him so when he gets out on the floor, it’s just him and an opponent,” Hamilton said after Wednesday’s morning session. “I don’t want him to look to the sidelines. So it’s important in practice to push him to the limit. I know if I push him to the limit, in games he won’t be looking to the sidelines, being lost.” “You’ve got to respect Rip just for the way he competes every day,” Afflalo said. “He doesn’t come in one day and doesn’t want to play. He’s going to be Rip Hamilton every day. That’s enough said. It makes me mentally tough. I feel I’m a mentally tough person already, but to compete against a guy like that who challenges you not only physically but mentally, that’s part of the game. There are a lot of physically gifted players in the league, but if you’re one of the more mentally tough, you can compete with them.” Somebody asked Afflalo if there was a boundary he maintains that he won’t cross in his ultracompetitive practice jousts with the three-time All-Star with whom he’ll job share the shooting guard position this season. “Not on this court, I don’t,” he said. “Rip is a player I watched growing up, he’s been an All-Star many times – I respect him. And I watch him when he’s not paying attention. But when we get on the court, it’s my time to shine and battle against him. For me, there’s no place to get better than playing against Chauncey, Rip and Stuckey and Tayshaun every day. I don’t think I’m going to get that competition (in games).”

Hamilton came into the league nine years ago as a top-10 pick off of UConn’s 1999 national champions, playing on a Washington Wizards team whose leading scorer, Mitch Richmond, manned his position. Nobody offered to play a mentoring role for him. “I just never wanted to be ordinary,” he said. “So I always pushed myself and motivated myself and I always said, when I get the opportunity to be a veteran, the next guy coming up, I’m going to prepare him. When I leave the floor, I don’t want to see a dropoff. And when I see a dropoff, I’m going to let you know it. That’s why I always tell Arron, regardless of who’s in the game, you’ve still got to play at a high, high intensity.” With Hamilton and Chauncey Billups both three-time All-Stars and Rodney Stuckey and Afflalo each capable of commanding more minutes this season, it’s more than likely that any combination of three of them will be on the floor at the same time this season – which means Hamilton is going to get minutes at small forward. Curry reiterated that Wednesday when he said Walter Herrmann wouldn’t get all the backup small forward minutes because “I envision times having Rip, Stuckey and Chauncey on the floor together.”Hamilton’s competitiveness rears its head when he considers that possibility, despite his 190-pound frame. “It’s not what you see,” he grinned, “it’s what’s inside. I’ve got the heart of a lion.” He recalled advice longtime NBA center Tree Rollins provided when Rollins, then a Washington assistant, talked to him as a rookie. “He always told me, ‘Rip, the more positions you learn, the more time you’ll be on the floor.’ I always told myself I can play the one, I can play the two, I can play the three.”That’s if he and Afflalo don’t maim each other during practices.

Even before Tuesday's first practice, the Detroit Pistons players had a pretty good idea of what to expect defensively from first-year coach Michael Curry. But what about his offense? I asked the first-year coach about that this morning. His answer sounded to me like a more juiced-up version of Larry Brown's offense - which I have to tell you, is not a bad thing. "Our goal offensively is first of all, to create some offense, easy transition baskets because of our defense," Curry said. "We want to be able to at times, be free-flowing offensively. And at times, be able to get down in the half court and throw the ball (inside). We want to be able to take advantage of getting the ball into the paint, and also dribble penetration. If we can get jumpers on inside-out action, we'll be satisfied with that." Here are three things that should go a long way in Detroit achieving its goals offensively.

1. Stick with Stuckey:There are some still not convinced that Rodney Stuckey will play major minutes this season. For this kind of offense system to work, Curry has no choice. Chauncey Billups is one of the NBA's best point guards, but the one area that he has never really been that good at, is scoring in transition. But it is one of Stuckey's strengths.2. Feed Rasheed (in the post):Curry will have to do what no other coach other than Brown was able to do: Convince Rasheed Wallace that the post can be his friend (sometimes). There are few players in the NBA who can defend Wallace effectively when he's on the block. His 6-foot-11 frame gives him the kind of size that can cause problems. And his ability to score not only with his back to the basket, but also face-up, makes him an even tougher cover for most defenders. But far too often, Wallace gives those guys a pass because he'd rather linger around the 3-point line instead of make them work on the block. If Curry can convince him to spend more time around the basket, the Pistons will have that low-post offensive presence they need to balance out what should be a much-improved transition game.

3. Live with (not by) the jumpshot:The past few years saw the Pistons collectively move farther away from being an inside-outside team, to one that relied way too much on jumpers. Some nights, they were on. Others, not so much. It still has to be a big part of what they do, because so many of their players are good shooters. But if those jumpshots aren't preceded by dribble-penetration or at least looking into the post, chances are pretty good that the jumper taken will be contested.

OK, before I get another flood of “how tall is Amir” questions, I asked him the other day and he said during pre-camp physicals they told him he measured in at 6-foot-11 and 226 pounds.

Curry mixed up the three five-man units from the first day to the second, never with more than two starters to a unit, but the constant from Tuesday to Wednesday was the big man pairing of Rasheed Wallace and Johnson. I asked him if there was anything to read into that regarding the fifth starting spot.

“They work well together,” he said. “When you’re trying to balance out the team, you look at trying to have one of our younger guys with the veterans.”

Kwame Brown and Antonio McDyess were teammates today, as were Jason Maxiell and Cheikh Samb. On Tuesday, it was Brown and Maxiell, McDyess and Samb.

The defense has won more than its share of battles with the offense, but Walter Sharpe had a nice moment when he grabbed an offensive rebound, then hit a half-hook from about 12 feet over Tayshaun Prince.

Curry wrapped up the practice but putting the offense in situations where they’d have to go the length of the court, down by two points, in eight seconds. Then inbound the ball at half-court, down three points. Rasheed Wallace designed a play for his red team that netted him a potential tying 3-pointer. He missed, but Johnson made a spectacular play that saw him get fouled while almost tapping the rebound in.

Curry only scheduled one session Wednesday after going hard twice on Tuesday. The schedule for Thursday calls for another three-hour morning practice, then the popular open practice at Oakland University 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Brian Hendrickson of The Columbian: "As the media was allowed into the season's first practice, No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden -- preparing for his first season after spending all of last year recovering from microfracture surgery -- was nowhere to be found. He emerged moments later with trainer Jay Jensen, limped down the sideline on a sprained right ankle, hopped on a stationary bike and rode it for the remainder of the workout. What followed felt like a four-alarm media emergency. ... In fact, the injury was as mild as they come -- a grade-one sprain, GM Kevin Pritchard said. It likely would not have prevented Oden from returning to practice had he chosen to do so. But when you're Greg Oden and the anticipation of your debut has been building for 15 months, nothing is a minor injury -- a reality that Oden acknowledged with a terse tone. 'I can't even fall on the ground without somebody's breath going away,' Oden said. And up to that point, the 7-foot center said he had participated in the full practice without any signs of trouble."

The Lakers suffered their first injury of the 2008-09 season in yesterday’s night session when Sasha Vujacic attempted to avoid DJ Mbenga and ended up rolling his left ankle.

“I think he’s going to be alright. It’s one of those weird ones. There’s no swelling, but he’s had some obvious discomfort and he can’t get any strength out of it,” said Head Coach Phil Jackson.

The injury is being diagnosed as a moderate sprain.

The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent guard Dan Dickau to a contract, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced. Dickau, 30, has appeared in 300 regular-season games during his six-year NBA career, owning career averages of 5.8 points, 2.5 assists, 1.4 rebounds and 15.4 minutes per game with Atlanta, Portland, Dallas, New Orleans, Boston and the Los Angeles Clippers. The 6-0 guard spent last season with the Clippers, appearing in 67 games (eight starts) and averaging 5.3 points and 2.6 assists in 15.5 minutes, while shooting 41.9% from the field, 33.3% from three-point range and 82.9% from the free throw line.

A. Sherrod Blakely of Booth Newspapers: "During Tuesday's first practice of training camp, Detroit Pistons forward Amir Johnson had to pick himself off the floor after unsuccessfully battling Kwame Brown for a rebound. Moments later, Arron Afflalo put Richard Hamilton on his back. Soon after that, Afflalo suffered a few scratches on his shoulder and forearm while being defended -- and at one point, was stripped of the ball -- by Will Bynum. And that was just the last 30 minutes of practice. Things look to be quite different under first-year coach Michael Curry, who put his players through a rigorous three-hour practice dominated by physical play that left players banged, bruised and with a better understanding of what he expects from them this season."

The Golden State Warriors plan to meet with the representative for point guard Monta Ellis next week to discuss any potential disciplinary action or fine because of his mo-ped-related ankle injury.

Ellis signed a new six-year, $66 million contract in July, then injured his left ankle in August in a low-speed mo-ped crash -- an offseason activity prohibited in his new deal as is a standard provision for contracts around the league.

Ellis will miss training camp and at least several weeks of the regular season after hurting himself in his native Mississippi. "We'll meet with his agent next week. At that point we'll have a discussion with him and then we'll let him know what we're looking at doing," Warriors president Robert Rowell said Wednesday. "We're without Monta for a while. We've just got to weather that storm." Will he be fined? "I can't tell you," Rowell said.

Allan Houston made it through only one full practice before pulling himself out. Not a very promising sign for a guy attempting a comeback. Houston, though, is in no rush to show the New York Knicks what he can do. Unlike a year ago, when he didn't have much time to make a successful return, coach Mike D'Antoni and president Donnie Walsh say Houston will be given most of the month to prove that, at 37 and with a history of knee trouble, he can handle the running involved in D'Antoni's system.

So Houston sat out the scrimmage Tuesday night during the second practice of the opening day of training camp, not wanting to push a body that hasn't endured twice-a-day workouts in years. "To give it a fair chance under my situation, it's probably not even smart to go out and do everything, especially the first week," Houston said after practicing Wednesday morning. "As the season goes on, yeah, I'm going to be able to probably do everything, but two-a-days is a whole different ballgame than when you practice during the season. So this is really just getting used to doing this again."

Neither Houston nor D'Antoni were concerned that Houston sat out -- D'Antoni joked that everyone wanted to, but Houston had seniority. Besides, the coach has already seen reason to believe this could work.

The Sacramento Kings hired Shareef Abdur-Rahim as an assistant coach Wednesday, a week after the veteran forward retired because of a persistent knee injury.

The 31-year-old Abdur-Rahim will join coach Reggie Theus' staff after missing most of last season because of knee problems. Abdur-Rahim retired Sept. 22, shortly before the start of his 13th NBA season.

Abdur-Rahim played for Vancouver, Atlanta, Portland and Sacramento during his career, making one All-Star team and winning an Olympic gold medal for the American team in 2000.

With Travis Diener out indefinitely due to lingering pain in his left foot, the Pacers will be on the lookout for a third point guard to help get them through training camp and the preseason.

Coach Jim O'Brien said Diener would be "down a significant time … he might be out 4-6 weeks. We might have to look at bringing in another point guard to make sure our practices flow."

Diener had surgery to remove bone spurs from his left foot last May. He joined the team for part of a full-court scrimmage in Tuesday's practice but his foot did not respond well. "He had way more pain than we anticipated he would," O'Brien said. "If he doesn't rest it, the problem could end up in a fracture and we just don't want that to happen."

Magic General Manager Otis Smith reiterated Wednesday that the club doesn't have any plans to give forward Hedo Turkoglu a contract extension before this season plays out.

Some teams offer star players extensions before they can become free agents. "You can do an extension, but wouldn't I be negotiating against myself right now?" Smith said. "I like Turk. I like what he does for our team. It's way too early, way premature, for this."

There's a school of thought that the Magic could extend Turk before the season is over before he can opt out of his six-year, $39 million contract and become a free agent. Turkoglu told the the Sentinel recently that he will opt out after the season. The Magic obviously want to see if he can follow up on his terrific 2007-08 season before committing big money to him. It is likely he will ask for a contract similar to the 5-year, $50-million deal that small forward Corey Maggette received this summer with the Golden State Warriors. "Let's back up last year this year," Smith said.

Afternoon update: Ben Gordon skipped double sessions for the second straight day Wednesday, making false his claim from Monday that he'd practice today.

The Bulls expect Gordon to sign a one-year tender offer for $6.4 million by Wednesday's 10:59 pm deadline. If Ben Gordon keeps his word about practicing on Wednesday, it will have to be at the evening session.

As the morning session began Wednesday, Gordon sat in the lobby of the Berto Center, wearing a sweat suit and perusing his handheld device. Gordon said he has made his decision on whether to sign a one-year qualifying offer for $6.4 million or accept a six-year deal worth roughly $58 million but wouldn't reveal the decision. "Be patient," Gordon said. Earlier this week, general manager John Paxson said little progress had been made on a longterm extension. Asked if that remained true, Gordon smiled.

Nothing is official yet, but Dan Dickau is expected to sign with the Warriors later today. Per NBA policy, the veteran point guard did not participate in the practice. Instead, he took it all in from the sidelines, hoping to familiarize himself with his soon-to-be new team and surroundings.

When Dickau officially becomes a Warrior - when he signs the contract - he will reunite with college teammate and first-year Warrior Ronny Turiaf. The duo played together during the 2001-02 season (Dickau was a senior and Turiaf a freshman), leading the Bulldogs to a 28-3 record and a West Coast Conference championship.

Turiaf is far from being Dickau's lone connection to the club, as the 30-year-old point guard teamed up with Stephen Jackson during the 2003-04 season with the Hawks and he played alongside Corey Maggette with the Clippers last season. In fact, this will actually mark Dickau's second stint with the Warriors. Golden State originally acquired the Gonzaga product with Dale Davis from Portland in exchange for Nick Van Exel in 2004. Dickau's first tenure with the Warriors, however, was short-lived, as a month later he was traded to Dallas, where he then played for Head Coach Don Nelson. Follow all that?
