Why
Guess we're going to hire the Cavs Asst. over Avery Johnson. I don't agree with this at all. Curry was an asst. and look where that got us. Joe D. keeps making me wonder, WHAT ARE WE DOING?????????

San Antonio Spurs are frontrunners to land McDyess
Several sources are indicating that the Spurs have moved to the top of the list of teams that could land Antonio McDyess Wednesday.
The Spurs have emerged as the frontrunner in the chase to land free-agent forward Antonio McDyess. According to a league executive with knowledge of the negotiations, the Spurs have offered McDyess a three-year deal starting at the full mid-level exception, with the third year partially guaranteed. It has been widely speculated that McDyess, 34, will play only two more years. If the Spurs' rumored bid is true, the Spurs have essentially sweetened their best two-year offer by guaranteeing McDyess a bit of money for retirement in 2011-12.
The Pistons can't beat that deal. So McDyess can get more money, and also have a better chance at winning a Title with the Spurs. There has been no better professional than McDyess the past several years in Detroit, and while it might be sad to see him go, Antonio deserves a chance to get his ring.

Avery Johnson won't coach the Pistons
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Avery Johnson, the former Mavericks coach who is currently employed as an analyst on ESPN, could not come to terms with the Detroit Pistons on a possible coaching gig. Well-traveled assistant coach John Kuester emerges (or remains?) the favorite for the position.
And while I don't question his motives, you've got to think Johnson isn't really interested in coaching at this point. There were several positions open for him last summer, but he preferred to stay on the figurative sidelines (as opposed to the literal sidelines) while the Mavericks paid the final year of his contract.
Eight teams have seen openings since then, and Johnson really hasn't become a major factor in any of the coaching searches, save for the Detroit job. And if the leaks are any indication, he hasn't been much of a favorite, just another name on the pile. I understand that the fine pay and little scrutiny of an ESPN run can be far preferable to an 82-game turn, but the motivation at stake might be something to consider should Avery take the reins of your favorite team in a few years.

Johnson, Pistons break off coaching talks
Avery Johnson won't be joining the Detroit Pistons as head coach. "I looked at it, I was interested in it, but I was only interested in it if we could agree on a vision for the team going forward," Johnson told ESPN, where he is a studio analyst. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the two sides failed to agree on the length of a contract and the salary. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private.
The Pistons have instead narrowed their coaching search to Cavaliers assistant John Kuester and Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau, the person said. The Pistons fired Michael Curry as coach last week after one year on the bench. Curry's replacement -- Detroit's fifth coach in nine seasons -- has a host of roster decisions to make.
Ben Gordon, who signed a five-year contract worth $50-plus million after playing for the Bulls, is part of a potential three-guard rotation with Rip Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey. Charlie Villanueva, newly arrived from Milwaukee, will make at least $35 million and should be able to start for a team that will likely be without both Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess. Detroit was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round this past season, ending a miserable season that soured as soon as All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups was dealt to Denver for Allen Iverson. The Pistons won just three games in February and three in April, dropping to the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff seeding and a no-win matchup with LeBron James and the Cavs. The playoff series loss ended a remarkable run: The Pistons and the Magic Johnson-led Los Angeles Lakers are the only franchises to play in six straight conference finals since 1970-71, when teams had to win two series to advance that far.

Pistons hire Kuester as next head coach
The Detroit Pistons have agreed to terms with Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester to be their new head coach, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told SI.com. Another league source said the contract was for two seasons with a team option for a third year.
The Pistons zeroed in on Kuester on Monday after contract negotiations with ESPN analyst and former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson broke down over the weekend. Kuester, a former Pistons assistant coach under Larry Brown from 2004-06 and an NBA assistant coach since 1990, is considered to be one of the most qualified lieutenants in the NBA, having been an assistant for six NBA teams and having worked under top coaches such as Brown and Cleveland's Mike Brown. Kuester is a former head coach at Boston University and George Washington.
A formal announcement will come later this week.

Pistons and Avery Johnson end coaching talks
The Detroit Pistons' courtship of Avery Johnson is over.
Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president for basketball operations, said Tuesday that he's still looking for a head coach after failing to reach an agreement with Johnson, the former Mavericks coach who's currently an analyst with ESPN. "At our present stage, we just feel it's important that we continue to make decisions that are best for our team," Dumars said.
The Pistons are clearly in a rebuilding mode, revamping their team from a veteran-laden one to a franchise counting on players in their mid-20s.

AP Source: Pistons & John Kuester nearing a deal
A person familiar with the negotiations says the Detroit Pistons and John Kuester (QUE-stir) are nearing an agreement to make him their coach.
The person, who spoke Tuesday night on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not done, said the contract could be completed as soon as Wednesday.
Kuester spent the past two seasons as a Cleveland Cavaliers assistant and was on Larry Brown's championship-winning staff in 2004 with the Pistons. He was also an NBA assistant in Orlando, Philadelphia and New Jersey after the North Carolina graduate led George Washington from 1985-90.

John Kuester to Coach Pistons?
After cutting ties with Avery Johnson today, it looks like the Pistons might be turning to an obscure name to be the franchise’s sixth coach in the past 10 years: “Avery Johnson will not be the next coach of the Detroit Pistons, who are instead closing in on hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester. [...] Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that the job would instead go to Kuester in a deal likely to be completed later Tuesday or Wednesday. The Pistons’ pursuit of Johnson ended, sources said, because Detroit — having paid both Flip Saunders and recently fired Michael Curry last season and still owing an estimated $5 million to Curry over the next two seasons — was only prepared to extend a two-year offer to Johnson with a team option for a third season.”

And here comes Kuester down the home stretch
**UPDATE: Here’s a report from SI saying it’s official. The Detroit Pistons have agreed to terms with Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester to be their new head coach, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told SI.com. Another league source said the contract was for two seasons with a team option for a third year
It’s looking more like the dark horse candidate, Cleveland asst. John Kuester, has now taken the lead.
Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that the job would instead go to Kuester in a deal likely to be completed later Tuesday or Wednesday. It’s believed that Kuester’s offensive expertise and his history with the Pistons after working in Detroit as an assistant under Brown appeal greatly to Dumars. That’s despite that fact that Kuester — who was expected to travel to Detroit to meet face-to-face with Dumars later Tuesday — has never been a head coach in the NBA

Jersey patch to honor Chuck Daly
I came across this picture of first round pick Austin Daye in his Pistons jersey and noticed a patch on the right shoulder.
You can see there’s a ‘CD’ inside the classic Bad Boys era logo for the late Chuck Daly with the #2 which is retired at the Palace in Chuck’s honor for the back-to-back titles he led the Pistons to in ‘89 and ‘90.
A picture of Austin Daye with the patch in the link above^.Very classy move by the Pistons, I love it.

Avery Johnson a no-go
Pretty disappointing, to say the least. I felt Johnson was the best candidate for the job, especially because of his ability to whip players into shape and maintain a team’s conduct. I still don’t think Cuban should have let him go from the Mavs. Can’t really put this one on Joe Dumars either, if Avery was really demanding a long-term contract at $4-5 million a year, it doesn’t really fit into the rebuilding equation. It looks like the position will now be between Cavs’ assistant coach John Kuester and Celtics’ assistant Tom Thibodeau. Hope those assistant coaches don’t turn out like the last assistant coach Detroit hired.
Pistons president of operations Joe Dumars confirmed this afternoon that Avery Johnson is no longer in the running for the Detroit Pistons head coaching vacancy. The announcement was made after the two sides could not come to terms on a contract. It is widely believed that Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester is now the favorite to get the job, but Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau remains under serious consideration.
Johnson, currently an ESPN studio analyst, has a career winning percentage of nearly 75% and was once two wins from an NBA title. It was believed that type of resume made his asking price a bit steep. There were also reports that Johnson, 44, wanted a say in personnel matters, something Dumars was unlikely to be open to. It now appears that Dumars will turn to Kuester, 54, a longtime assistant who has never been a head coach at the professional level but was a member of Larry Brown’s staff in 2004 when the Pistons won the title.

Pistons pass on Avery, focus on Kuester (UPDATE)
The Detroit Pistons have passed on Avery Johnson in their search for a head coach and have entered into negotiations with Cavaliers assistant John Kuester, a person with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com. Unable to satisfy Johnson's salary requirements and apparently unwilling to guarantee a third year, the Pistons have focused on Kuester, a former Pistons assistant under Larry Brown who is credited with diversifying the Cavs' offense last season after coach Mike Brown gave him autonomy on that side of the floor. Kuester has not employed an agent in his dealings with the Cavs, but he is being represented in his negotiations with Detroit -- by CAA Sports, the same agency that represents LeBron James. A person familiar with the negotiations said an agreement is expected within 24 hours.
Johnson seemed to have been in a position to work out a reasonable deal because Dallas still owes him approximately $8 million over the next two seasons. The Pistons, however, are in a similar position after firing Michael Curry last week. Detroit owes Curry about $5 million over the next two seasons. Pistons president Joe Dumars traveled to Johnson's Houston-area home over the weekend to discuss the job. Previously, Dumars had stated that he wanted a coach in place in time for the Pistons' departure for Las Vegas summer league, which begins Friday.
The focus on Kuester wasn't surprising on several fronts. First, given Dumars' emphasis on upgrading the team's offensive potency by coming to terms with free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, Kuester's growing reputation as an offensive guru seemed to give him the edge over Thibodeau, who is widely regarded as one of the top defensive assistants in the league. The Pistons teams that advanced to six consecutive conference finals were built on defense, but it could be time for a change. It is not clear whether Dumars had reservations about Thibodeau's fairly rigid rotation system of defense, which is similar in style to the approach that wound up dooming the Cavaliers against Orlando in the conference finals. Thibodeau received credit -- and deservedly so -- for the Celtics' championship run in 2007-08, but his system benefited from having outstanding defenders like Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins. In addition to his history with the Pistons, Kuester also served on Brown's staff in Philadelphia when the team advanced to the 2001 NBA Finals in addition to stints in Orlando, New Jersey, and Boston. If money is as much of an issue with the remaining candidates as it was with Johnson, that may have tipped the scales in Kuester's favor as well. At close to $1 million per season, Thibodeau is one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the league. The hiring of Kuester would have a ripple effect, too; it would help the Pistons and hurt division rival Cleveland, which would need to find a new offensive guru to replace him.

Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester now a leading candidate for Detroit Pistons job
Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester has emerged as a leading candidate for the Detroit Pistons' head coaching position.
Former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson confirmed today that he and the Pistons have ended talks after a disagreement over the contract offer. Former Pistons coach Doug Collins pulled his name from consideration last week shortly after the Pistons fired coach Michael Curry after one season. The Cavs don't want to lose Kuester, who has been with the team for the last two years and took over as the offensive coordinator this past season. But according to a team source they would not stand in his way of him getting a promotion, even though it is to a division rival.
Kuester, who won a championship ring as an assistant with the Pistons in 2004, has a long-standing relationship with Pistons General Manager Joe Dumars. When making the coaching change, Dumars said he was looking for an offensive-minded coach. Last week Dumars committed more than $90 million for free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, both of whom are known for their offensive ability. Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau is also reportedly a finalist.

The Mavericks' offer is believed to have been upgraded recently, perhaps to the neighborhood of $3.5 million annually.
"Brandon's still very interested in Dallas," Dutt said. "We're making headway. We're just not there yet."
Bass is one of several power forwards getting interest from several teams, including Orlando and Detroit.

The Suns' search for a big man in free agency might take longer as they wait for the pool to dwindle, hoping to sign a player to a minimum-salary deal. Antonio McDyess is getting better offers from top teams, leaving the Suns' list at Joe Smith, Chris Wilcox, Channing Frye, Sean May and Fabricio Oberto once he clears waivers.
