Pistons close to naming Kuester coach
After meeting with Detroit Pistons president Joe Dumars and members of his front office in Auburn Hills, Mich., John Kuester returned home to Philadelphia on Tuesday night on the brink of becoming the franchise’s next coach, a league source close to the process said. No deal will be finalized before Wednesday, but the two sides are close to an agreement that would make Kuester, a Cleveland Cavaliers assistant, the Pistons’ coach.

Kuester has a history with the Pistons as a former Larry Brown assistant. He has been on several NBA coaching staffs, including Cleveland, Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The Pistons broke off talks with Avery Johnson on Tuesday morning after the two sides could not come to terms on a contract.

Dumars met with Johnson on Sunday in Houston, and talked with him and his representatives through Tuesday morning. Johnson, who is owed $8 million from the Dallas Mavericks, has been seeking a four-year, $20 million contract. So far, no NBA teams have been inclined to make that type of investment in contract talks with him.

Utah Jazz notebook: Koufos out after finger injury
The Jazz were without the services of Kosta Koufos on Monday. The second-year center will miss all five games of summer league this year with a dislocated ring finger on his left hand.

The injury is disappointing for all parties involved. The Jazz were looking forward to working with Koufos – who now reportedly weighs close to 270 pounds. Apparently the injury occurred when his hand was slapped during a pickup game. The Jazz could have used him in their 31-point loss to the Celtics on Monday.

Dallas Mavericks sign first round draft pick Rodrigue Beaubois
The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have signed rookie Rodrigue Beaubois. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Beaubois (6-2, 182) was selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. He was acquired, along with a second round pick, from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for the Mavericks’ 24th overall selection B.J. Mullens. The Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe native appeared in 29 French Pro A games in 2008-09 and averaged 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 22.3 minutes per game. Beaubois showed marked improvement from his 2007-08 campaign when he averaged 5.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 15.1 minutes per contest.

Beaubois is a member of the Mavericks Summer League Team. Dallas will play in the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports. The squad will see its first action on Friday, July 10 when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks at COX Pavilion in Las Vegas.

Hedo Turkoglu to sign with Raptors
The Toronto Star (Doug Smith) reports: To the mercenary professional athletes who ply their trades here, Toronto’s cozy ethnic neighbourhoods may as well be on Mars and “living” in the city means going from condo to arena to airport to an off-season home. To the newest Raptor, the city’s charm is the attraction. Hedo Turkoglu and his wife, Banu, who grew up high school sweethearts in their native Istanbul, should arrive here this week to officially sign a five-year contract worth about $53 million (U.S.) and – in a departure from the norm – it wasn’t the money that attracted them. It was the city and what it had to offer… The Portland Trail Blazers originally thought they were going to get Turkoglu on a five-year, $50 million contract, but the couple reconsidered the offer overnight Thursday and turned it down late Friday.

Rasheed Wallace to sign with Celtics
The Detroit Free Press (Vince Ellis) reports: When Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars traded away Chauncey Billups last November, the heart of the 2004 world champion team was gone. And with Rasheed Wallace severing ties with the Pistons on Sunday by giving an oral commitment to sign with Eastern Conference rival Boston, the soul has left the building as well. Multiple media outlets reported that Wallace, 35, agreed to the mid-level exception for $5.8 million per season, and it’s believed to be for two seasons. The Celtics pulled out all the stops to get Wallace, an unrestricted free agent. It was reported that a contingent of Celtics that included Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, team president Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers traveled to the Detroit area last week to recruit Wallace.

Shannon Brown to re-sign with Lakers
The Los Angeles Daily News reports: Instead of chasing after bigger bucks elsewhere, Shannon Brown agreed to re-sign with the Lakers for $4.2 million over two seasons, his agent said Monday. Brown could have signed for more money over more seasons with other teams, agent Mark Bartlestein said. Brown made a modest salary of $797,000 last season. “It’s a great day,” said Brown, a reserve guard who averaged 3.2 points with the Lakers last season. “They showed me so much love. I felt good about what was going on here.

InsideHoops.com editor says: Brown was a decent backup for the Lakers last season, taking plenty of minutes away from point guard Jordan Farmar.

Wade Wants Iverson?
Allen Iverson may be a far cry from the player he was when he led the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals, but there are those who believe he can still contribute to a team that's looking to make it to the NBA's big dance. Count Miami HEAT star Dwyane Wade among them, as he told 790 AM The Ticket in Miami recently. "I mean with A.I. you look at a guy who, of course is one of the best players to ever put on an NBA jersey," said Wade, who has told HEAT management he will sign a contract extension if he feels the team has a shot at a title. "(Iverson's) a guy who can still score in the right offense, in the right flow. So, you know you can never turn your nose up to a Hall of Fame guy like Allen Iverson."

So far, despite an earnest desire to improve the roster, the HEAT have been left out of the talks with most of the significant free agents. Ben Gordon, Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza and Charlie Villanueva are all spoken for, and it seems Lamar Odom, David Lee, Paul Millsap and Shawn Marion won't be on the market much longer. Even as those free agents commit to other teams, however, Wade says he's confident HEAT President Pat Riley will get something done. "Well, at this moment there's a lot of teams that got better but they got better real fast. But, one thing I've came to realize is that Miami can never count out Pat Riley, you never know what he can cook up in the lab so, we're going to be patient and I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going to let him do his job and I'm going to do my job and my job is to come out next year and perform and lead my teammates, whoever's on my team to as good of a season that we could have."

The HEAT have also been on the outside looking in with some of the bigger names available via trade, with Shaquille O'Neal heading to Cleveland, Vince Carter heading to Orlando, and Richard Jefferson heading to San Antonio. The HEAT haven't even been rumored in trade talks as of yet, something Wade says he expects to change in the near future. "Well, there is a lot going on and there are a lot of teams that are shaking a lot of things up, and these are teams that feel that they need to do it now and some teams feel that they need to win championships now, and you have to respect what they're doing. Myself and Pat Riley, we had that back and forth that one time but it really wasn't going back and forth, he just said what he wanted and I said what I wanted. And, you can respect that from both sides; I want to win, and he wants to win. And, he wants me to be here to win, but we have some really talented players as well of the players that we have here to win. We'll eventually get to it and I look forward to getting to that. I don't know, I hear a lot of people who like it here but it hasn't happened yet, so hopefully the right person comes along and can help this franchise out, with me." The prospect of playing with Dwyane Wade and one of the better casts of young talent in the league will certainly be appealing to a lot of players, but as they commit one-by-one to other teams you can't help but wonder if the clock is ticking on Wade's own career in Miami. The HEAT need to make a significant move . . .and soon.

Pistons Find Their Coach
Earlier today we learned that Detroit Pistons GM Joe Dumars and former Dallas Mavericks head coach (and Coach Of The Year) Avery Johnson have been unable to find common ground, meaning Detroit has moved on in their coaching search. At issue was Johnson's desire for a fourth year, which the Pistons weren't willing to give.

Frankly, Johnson was smart to ask for a fourth year of guaranteed money. After all, this team is not likely to be good in the next two years, regardless of who the head coach is. They went on the cheap with Michael Curry as head coach and then traded away their on-court leader in Chauncey Billups. The subsequent departures of Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess have further diluted the core that was a championship hopeful just a season ago. Now there's talk of trading away Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton, as well.

If you were going to commit your foreseeable future to a team that's running towards mediocrity, you'd want certain guarantees, as well. Avery doesn't want to be judged by the team's performance when they're landing players like Charlie Villanueva (extremely inconsistent) and Ben Gordon (scores well, but doesn't make his teammates better) and calling that their new foundation. Maybe Johnson intentionally priced himself out of that situation. With Johnson out of the picture, the Pistons have reportedly reached an agreement with Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester on a two-year contract and a third year at the team's option. That should become official in the next 24-48 hours.

No Avery For Pistons
Avery Johnson will not be the next coach of the Detroit Pistons.

The Detroit Pistons and the ESPN analyst broke off contract talks Tuesday after more than two days of negotiations, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Pistons -- having paid both Flip Saunders and Michael Curry last season and still owing $5 million to Curry over the next two seasons -- were only willing to offer Johnson a two-year deal with a team option for a third season. It's believed that Johnson wanted no less than the security of a four-year contract, given where the Pistons are in the Eastern Conference hierarchy after a 39-43 season and the fact that Detroit is looking for its sixth coach in Joe Dumars' 10 seasons running the team's front office.

Kuester Next Pistons Coach?
As ESPN.com reported late Monday, Dumars is now expected to turn to Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester to replace Curry. TNT analyst Doug Collins withdrew from consideration last week and the only other known candidate is Boston Celtics associate head coach Tom Thibodeau, but sources say that Kuester's offensive expertise and history with the Pistons after working as an assistant under Larry Brown appeal strongly to Dumars.

Kuester Won't Be Coach Today
With Avery Johnson no longer in the picture, Detroit appears ready to focus its search for a new head coach on former Pistons assistant John Kuester.

It is unclear if Detroit has offered Kuester the job yet, but Joe Dumars said no deal for Kuester - or any other potential coaching candidate - would be completed today.

Kuester was an assistant under Larry Brown during the Pistons' 2004 title run. With nearly 20 years of experience as an NBA assistant, Kuester spent this past season on the Cleveland Cavaliers bench.

Hawks reach agreement with Bibby
The Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement to re-sign Mike Bibby to a three-year deal.

Bibby's agent, David Falk, said Tuesday he has reached an "oral understanding" that will allow the Hawks to retain the point guard who has led the team to two straight playoff appearances.

"We've reached an agreement in principle that hopefully will be announced very soon," Falk said.

Pistons and Avery Johnson end coaching talks
The Detroit Pistons' courtship of Avery Johnson is over. Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president for basketball operations, said Tuesday that he's still looking for a head coach after failing to reach an agreement with Johnson, the former Mavericks coach who's currently an analyst with ESPN. "At our present stage, we just feel it's important that we continue to make decisions that are best for our team," Dumars said. The Pistons are clearly in a rebuilding mode, revamping their team from a veteran-laden one to a franchise counting on players in their mid-20s. Johnson, who was fired last year by the Mavericks with a lot of money left on his contract, can afford to wait to find the right fit to resume his coaching career. He didn't find it after discussing the Pistons' situation with Dumars. "I looked at it, I was interested in it, but I was only interested in it if we could agree on a vision for the team going forward," Johnson told ESPN.

Dumars wanted to hire a veteran coach after firing Michael Curry following his only season as a head coach, but he might end up with Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester or Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau. Doug Collins withdrew his name from consideration last week shortly after Curry was fired. Detroit's fifth coach in nine seasons - following Curry, Flip Saunders, Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle - will have an interesting choice to make if the roster remains intact. The Pistons are expected to sign free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to five-year contracts Wednesday, essentially plugging them in for Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace. Gordon is 26 and Villanueva turns 25 next month, potentially entering the prime of their careers, after Billups and Wallace were at their best when Detroit won the NBA title five years ago. While the 6-foot-11 Villanueva can easily slip into the depleted frontcourt, the 6-3, 200-pound Gordon does not seem to have a spot because he's a natural shooting guard, as is Richard Hamilton.

Gordon was voted the NBA's top reserve in 2005 and if he accepts that role again, the Pistons would have an intriguing three-guard rotation with him, Hamilton and 23-year-old Rodney Stuckey. Gordon or Hamilton may have a problem with coming off the bench and Detroit's next coach could have to deal with poor chemistry, as Curry did. Before the Pistons endured misery last season, they won the 2004 NBA title under Brown and came within a win of repeating with him in the middle of a six-year streak of advancing to at least the Eastern Conference finals. That impressive run began when Carlisle, who is now Dallas' coach, was put in charge of an NBA team for the first time and it looks like Dumars' rebuilding plan might include another inexperienced coach.

Mavs sign draftee PG Beaubois
Mavericks point guard Rodrigue Beaubois is jumping right into the NBA. Beaubois, who has played professionally in France, took part in his first summer-league practice Tuesday and signed his rookie deal with the club.

As the 25th overall pick, he's slotted to receive almost $896,200 this season and $963,400 next season, with a $1.03 million option for his third year.

Beaubois actually was drafted by Oklahoma City, then was sent to Dallas for the No. 24 pick (B.J. Mullens) and a second-rounder. Beaubois has athletic ability but is considered a raw basketball talent. Whether he's ready to back up Jason Kidd and J.J. Barea remains to be seen, but that's why he'll be part of the Mavericks' summer league team in Las Vegas.

AP Source: Pistons & John Kuester nearing a deal
The Detroit Pistons are close to ending their search for a new boss on the bench. The Pistons and John Kuester were nearing an agreement Tuesday night to make him their coach, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not done, said the contract could be completed as soon as Wednesday. Kuester spent the past two seasons as a Cleveland Cavaliers assistant and was on Larry Brown's championship-winning staff in 2004 with the Pistons. He was also an NBA assistant in Orlando, Philadelphia - under Brown - New Jersey and Boston. The North Carolina graduate was a head coach at George Washington from 1985-90. "Nice man, don't know much about him as a coach," TNT analyst Doug Collins wrote in a text message to the AP. "Really quality guy/gentleman."

The Pistons spoke with Avery Johnson about replacing Michael Curry, but talks with the former Dallas Mavericks coach ended Tuesday. Detroit also was considering bringing back Collins, a former Pistons coach, but he withdrew his name from consideration last week shortly after Curry was fired. Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau was also a candidate. The Pistons are clearly in a rebuilding mode, revamping their team from a veteran-laden one to a franchise counting on players in their mid-20s. Detroit is expected to sign free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to five-year contracts Wednesday, essentially plugging them in for Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace. That impressive run began when Carlisle, who is now Dallas' coach, was put in charge of an NBA team for the first time and it looks as if president of basketball operations Joe Dumars' rebuilding plan includes going with another inexperienced head coach. The 54-year-old Kuester played for the Dean Smith-led Tar Heels. He was drafted in the third round of the 1977 NBA draft by the Kansas City Kings and played for them, Denver and Indiana during his three-season career in the league.

Pistons Won't Get Avery Johnson: Coaching candidate Avery Johnson seems to have priced himself out of negotiations with the Detroit Pistons. It had been previously reported that Johnson was looking for a deal similar to what Flip Saunders received with the Washington Wizards – four years, $18 million. According to sources close to ESPN – where Johnson is currently a NBA analyst – the Pistons would only offer two guaranteed years with an option for a third year.

It's understandable why the Pistons would be gun shy on the length of the contract. They paid both Saunders and Michael Curry last season (since they fired Flip a year early) and will be paying Curry $5 million over the next two seasons on top of whatever they pay the coach who will actually be running the team. Detroit's unwillingness to meet Johnson's asking price means that it seems likely they go with a cheaper option, unless Johnson – who appeared to be their first choice – lowers his contract demands. This could open the door for someone like a Bill Laimbeer, Mark Jackson, or even super-assistant Tom Thibodeau, however Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester is considered to be the current frontrunner according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.

Johnson likely won't change his mind; he has been very picky about what jobs he would even admit to showing interest in and believes he can be that picky. If Detroit doesn't meet his price, the next situation he likes very well might. The Pistons will need to balance adding an inexperienced head coach with the veterans on their roster. Guard Rip Hamilton, who would seem to be on the trading block after the Pistons have agreed to pay free agent Ben Gordon $55 million over five years, never did see eye to eye with Curry, supposedly because of Curry's lack of experience.

any news on avery johnson? whos this guy from cleveland, thats also being considered/

I'm just going off of media reporters but supposedly Johnson wanted more money than the Pistons were willing to offer so the alternative seems to be the Cavaliers Assistant Coach John Keuster.
