Pistons coach John Kuester wanted his team to show more fight after Friday night's poor showing against Indiana. He got his wish, but it didn't help his team beat the Portland Trail Blazers, as the Pistons lost their second straight, 97-93, Saturday. The Pistons trailed by 18 in the first half but rallied to take a 93-92 lead late. They trailed by 96-93 and had three quality looks to tie the score but couldn't convert. Four technicals were handed out between both teams in the third quarter, and a minor scrum ignited by a hard Charlie Villanueva foul seemed to stoke the Pistons' flames. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons with 25 points and Rodney Stuckey added 20.
Before the game, Kuester addressed Friday night's verbal spat with forward Tayshaun Prince. "This is an emotional game," Kuester said. "It wasn't anything that escalated. He wanted to win and he expressed a couple thoughts." With seven minutes left and the Pistons trailing by 23 on Friday, Kuester had seen enough, pulling Prince, Hamilton and Villanueva. Prince and Kuester then got into a verbal quarrel and Prince had to be restrained by teammates. Kuester downplayed the incident but defended his actions to empty the bench. "You can sense a change had to be made and that's when I decided to make that move," Kuester said.
Prince was playing in his first game since Jan. 9, finishing with seven points and six rebounds in 24 minutes. He declined comment before Saturday's game per his usual pregame policy.Kuester said he and Prince spoke before the game to clear the air. "You'd rather have guys that want to win," he said. "Tay understands what needs to be done. It's a passionate game, and emotions carry over."
