With the top 20 protection, it would mean that the next time we finish with #20 or higher it would go to PHX but we'd never risk losing any better a pick. PHX would have this pick in their pocket and could use it as a trade chip or hold on to it to have a second first rounder when we're finally good enough to finish in the top 3rd of the league.

Not worth it. It means we can't trade the pick in any scenario again, just like the last few years, until the pick is finally traded, which if its top 20 forever, might be a while. That type of burden isn't worth it to get the 27th pick. Especially considering how very uncommon it is to find a key contributing player at that point.

Basically, wasting assets just to get a draft pick this year is futile. This is a long term project, not an overnight project.

Offers from other fans to get Detroit into the first round for cap space (Trade forum)...

Perkins and #21 for a TPE.

Lin + #25 for a TPE.

Bass and #17 for Smith and #38.

Walllace and #17 and Clips 2015 pick for Smith.

(I'd take the Lin and Bass deals. Two solid vets who would help us. We could probably dump Bynum for cap space and let Jennings come off the bench. Two firsts to boot.)
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

We could do all 3 of these (Smith for Bass would free up an extra $7 mil of cap space) and move Smith + our cap space for #17, #21 & #25.

Perkins/Lin/Bass are all expirings who could actually help our team this year, plus we'd only have Drummond/Monroe/KCP/Jennings/Mitchell/17/21/25 committed to 2015, ie ~$35 mil of cap room in summer 2015.

Make it
- Perkins + Lamb + #21 for TPE
- Lin + Asik for Jennings
- Bass + #17 for Smith and #38

Trade forum from Sac....

Landry, Outlaw, Terry, Williams, #8 for Jennings, Jerebko

So if we took the Sacramento and Bass deals, our cap space would be nearly the same and we'd have...

Drummond/Williams
Monroe/Bass/Landry
Singler/Outlaw
KCP/Terry
Bynum

#8, #17

$10M in cap space

(Against other fanboy trades I posted) We could keep Drummond and Monroe and....still punt.

below (popular, maybe a modification though.)
Smoove for Crash, #17, and a few 2nd's would be cool. If Boston whiffs on Kevin Love, I think Boston should really look at that. For us, it opens up a couple million in cap while getting a prospect and minor assets. Crash expires with Jennings before Smoove.

and ohhh, how I hate deals where we get Carl Landry. Jason Thompson could help us more and Sac probably wants them both gone. I mean that Jason Thompson could defend some centers and rim-protect a little bit.
I value that over Landry's post scoring. Drummoose could get our post buckets. But depth at the center position is a near-constant for great teams.

I would accept this deal If we could swap out Terry or Landry for Mccallum.

I really feel that SVG is the last hope for Jennings and Smith and I'm cautiously optimistic that he can make these players productive. With an authoritative presence like SVG who thus far seems willing to bench players not buying into the system we could see a turn around both players significant boosting trade value.

It all really depends who is left on board at #8 though as taking on bad contracts for a prospect like Staukas I feel is not adequate compensation. If Smart or Gordon and possibly Lavine is available then I think we should swing for the fences. This draft has many prospects that can help us and cap space is more valuable to bigger market teams that players actually want to play for. Detroit is not a hot commodity for free agents so let's add to our long term future by doing everything possible to acquire as higher pick we can

Some Trade ideas...

1. J. Smith & 2015 1st to the Bulls for Boozer and picks 16 & 20

2. J. Smith & 2015 1st to the Suns for Okafor and picks 14 & 18

3. B. Jennings & pick 38 to the Magic for Afflalo

4. B. Jennings & J. Smith to the NYK for Amare & Shumpert

5. B. Jennings, J. Smith & 2015 1st to the Rockets for Lin, Asik & 25

Bonus Fantasy Offseason....

Say we somehow pulled off trades 2 and 3 drafted Elfrid Payton & Kyle Anderson, Young, Cleanthony or Saric.

We then focus on signing Lowry in FA.

Our new team...

PG: Lowry/Payton
SG: Aflalo/KCP
SF: Singler/Rookie
PF: Moose/Mitchell/JJ
C: Dre/Okafor

I'm in on the 1st three, particularly Bass.

If we giveing away Monroe, we should keep Smith. I am more for Waiters and Bennet for Monroe.

No. I think he can't guard anyone.

I don't think any of Waiters, Thompson or Bennett are anything special. Waiters is probably the best of the bunch but I don't see how he's any different than a guy like OJ Mayo, aka an irrational confidence guy who will shoot you out of as many games as he shoots you into. Bennett is a complete bust. Thompson is an ok role player, but I think the only difference between him and Thomas Robinson (whose played for 3 teams now).

Basically I think Waiters / Bennett / Thompson = Mayo / Derrick Williams / Thomas Robinson, the only difference being the Cavs management (and fans) is the worst in the league at overvaluing their assets.
