The Washington Wizards signed free-agent forwards DerMarr Johnson, Linton Johnson and Taj McCullough on Monday, bringing the team's training camp roster to 17. The three will have "a chance to compete for a roster spot," team president Ernie Grunfeld said.

DerMarr Johnson has played for the Hawks, Knicks, Nuggets and Spurs in seven NBA seasons, averaging 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds. A first-round pick in the 2000 draft, he averaged 3.4 points in five games with San Antonio last season. Linton Johnson has spent time with six NBA teams over five seasons, with averages of 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds. McCullough is a rookie out of Winthrop who played for the Wizards' entry in the Las Vegas summer league.

The Wizards open training camp Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has picked up the option on the contract of Head Coach Eddie Jordan, keeping him under contract through the 2009-10 season.

Per team policy, financial terms of the contract were not released. “Eddie has done an outstanding job and has been instrumental in making us a perennial playoff team, so we are pleased to reward that success by picking up the option on his contract,” said Grunfeld. “We are very excited about the upcoming season and feel that this team is ready to progress to another level under Eddie’s leadership.”

Jordan has compiled an overall record of 196-214 (.478) in five seasons as head coach of the Wizards and is currently the third-longest tenured head coach in the NBA behind Jerry Sloan (Utah Jazz) and Gregg Popovich (San Antonio Spurs). He has led the team to the playoffs the last four seasons (making the Wizards the only Eastern Conference team other than Detroit to do so), compiling a 171-157 (.521) mark during that span. “I’d like to thank (Wizards Owner) Abe Pollin and Ernie Grunfeld, my assistants and the players for their confidence in me and for putting the pieces in place for us to continue to build on what we’ve already accomplished,” said Jordan. “This team has proven it can compete at an elite level, and I have high expectations for what we can achieve moving forward.”

Finnish legend Hanno Mottola(2.11-PF) has announced his decision to retire from professional basketball last Saturday. Mottola decided to end his career early after 12 years. Mottola is probably the most popular finnish basketball player and he currently is the first and only finnish player to ever play in the NBA. He is also one of the natural leaders of the Finland National Team. He started playing basketball for the University of Utah and later on he was selected in the second round, 40th overall, in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He played for 2 seasons with the Atlanta Hakws before returning to Europe to play pro basketball. He averaged 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in a grand total of 155 games in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks

After his time with the Hawks, he returned to Europe, playing in Spain with TAU Cerámica of the ACB, then in Italy with Skipper Bologna (2003-2004, reached the Italian Championship finals and Euroleague final) and Scavolini Pesaro (2004-2005), in the Russian Basketball Super League with Dynamo Moscow and in the Lithuanian League with Žalgiris Kaunas. He conquered the Uleb Cup in 2006 as a player of Dynamo Moscow. The last team he played for was Aris Thessaloniki and he played last season in the greek A1 league and the Euroleague with them.

Some of his career highlights are:
* First native of Finland to play in a regular-season NBA game
* Started first three games of 2000-01 season as a rookie
* Ranks 14th all-time in school history at Utah with 1,492 points
* Set Finnish National Team record for most points in a game when he scored 43 against Latvia in August, 1998
* Named to the GTE Academic All-America Second Team as a junior
Mottola said in the interview that it was a long overdue decision and he wanted to leave basketball while he was still at the top of his game. His family also influenced his final decision and his business plans. Mottola always played at the highest level of European basketball and his absence will not go unnoticed.

LUOL Deng has cost Great Britain's basketball team £60,000 a victory during their successful European Championship qualifying campaign. But that is money well spent as Chris Finch's team concludes its amazing qualifying efforts for the 2009 European Championships in Bosnia Herzegovina tonight. With the Brits guaranteed to finish top of Group D, Deng is likely to sit out the final group clash with a toe injury which he picked up during the decisive midweek win in the Czech Republic.

Deng only made the GB line-up after British Basketball paid an extra £240,000 insurance premium to cover an old back injury. And Finch said: "Obviously right now, that represents money well spent because we have qualified for the European Finals for the first time ever."It also sends out a message about how serious and well run this programme is. Luol is not only a great player, he' s a great ambassador for the sport and a vital part of what we are doing."

Deng, who signed a £39.4 million contract with the Chicago Bulls this summer, has sparked GB to a 4-1 record so far but will be a big miss against a Bosnian team that needs to win to clinch second place. Deng said: "I have a badly bruised toe which I got late in the game against the Czechs and I most likely won't play. "That's disappointing but it's the best feeling in the world to have qualified, especially because we were the first country to clinch a place on Wednesday. "Coming in, I had the insurance problem and the team had to prepare without me but we were still able to play wel in that first game, re-group and win four straight."

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed free agent forwards DerMarr Johnson, Linton Johnson and Taj McCullough. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not released. “DerMarr’s experience and versatility, Linton’s athleticism and defensive ability and Taj’s play with our summer league team gives them a chance to compete for a roster spot,” said Grunfeld. “We’re looking forward to training camp as an opportunity to evaluate how they might fit into the mix at the small forward position.”

DerMarr Johnson (6-9, 210) is a seven-year veteran who has seen action with the Hawks, Knicks, Nuggets and Spurs. He holds NBA career averages of 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 136 games. A Washington DC native, Johnson was originally selected by Atlanta with the sixth overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft following his freshman year at the University of Cincinnati. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Hawks in 2001-02, but missed the entire 2002-03 season after suffering four cracked vertebra in his neck following a car accident. He returned to the NBA with New York in 2003-04 and spent the next three seasons (2004-05 through 2006-07) with Denver. Johnson averaged 3.4 points in five games with San Antonio last season.

Linton Johnson (6-8, 205) is a five-year veteran who has seen action with the Bulls, Spurs, Nets, Hornets, Raptors and Suns. He holds NBA career averages of 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 141 games after going undrafted out of Tulane University. Johnson had his best statistical run when he averaged 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over the final 27 games for New Orleans/Oklahoma City after being acquired in a midseason trade with New Jersey. Johnson averaged 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds last season in eight games between Toronto and Phoenix.McCullough (6-7, 227) averaged 2.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in five games with the Wizards’ entry in the 2008 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The rookie out of Winthrop averaged 11.6 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds as a senior last season and helped the Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Jordan, a Washington DC native, was originally hired by the Wizards prior to the 2003-04 season. After his first year, he led the team to a 20-game improvement and their first playoff berth in eight seasons (as well as their first playoff series win since 1982). The team has made the playoffs each year since. Jordan represented the Wizards as the head coach of the 2007 Eastern Conference All-Star Team by virtue of the team having the best record in the Eastern Conference heading into the All-Star break. Jordan is third in total wins and total games coached among head coaches in franchise history and needs just seven wins to pass Wes Unseld and move into second place for total wins (behind Gene Shue). The Wizards will hold training camp from September 27-October 3 at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

http://www.nba.com/kings/news/AbdurRahim_Retires.html

Sacramento Kings’ forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim today announced his retirement from the NBA as a player due to a reoccurring knee injury. “First of all, on behalf of the entire organization I want to thank Shareef for his contribution to the Kings and NBA both on and off the court,” said Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. “He has had an exemplary career as a player and citizen. It is unfortunate for any productive career to be felled by injury. However, no one can ever doubt Shareef’s effort, commitment or desire to excel. It is our intention to find a new role for Shareef with the organization as he begins the next phase of his professional life.”

Abdur-Rahim enjoyed 12 seasons in the NBA with four different teams (Vancouver 1996-97 to 2000-01, Atlanta 2001-02 to 2003-04, Portland 2003-04 to 2004-05 and Sacramento 2005-06 to 2007-08), amassing career averages of 18.1 points (.452 FGs, .297 3FGs, .810 FTs), 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game through 830 outings. His most productive season, statistically, occurred during the 1998-99 campaign in Vancouver when he averaged 23.0 points (.432 FGs, .306 3FGs, .841 FTs), 7.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game through 50 contests (NBA Lockout season). The following season (1999-00), Abdur-Rahim averaged double figures in both points (20.3) and rebounds (10.1) per game, in which he played in all 82 contests for the Grizzlies. “I’ve been in a situation where I’ve been trying to get healthy over the last year and a half,” explained Abdur-Rahim. “I came to grips with the fact that, health-wise, I won’t be able to get back to the condition and level that is needed to play in the NBA. My right knee has become arthritic over the years and is to the point where it won’t allow me do the things and play at the level in which I’m accustomed to playing. As tough as it is to come to grips with, it’s the reality.” Abdur-Rahim was a member of the gold-medal winning United States Olympic team in 2000 while still with the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was selected to the Eastern Conference NBA All-Star Team where he scored nine points in 21 minutes as a member of the Atlanta Hawks in 2002. “Regarding my career, I’ve been really blessed and fortunate,” said Abdur-Rahim. “I’m thankful that I had basketball and was able to play in the NBA. There aren’t a lot of people who actually get to do what they grow up dreaming about doing. I’ve had that opportunity and I’m really thankful for that. I’m also thankful for the coaches, trainers, owners, front office people and friends I’ve made through my time in the NBA. It was a tough decision, but in no way am I bitter. I’m just really thankful and happy that I was given the opportunity to play in the NBA.”

On December 28, 2002, Abdur-Rahim became the sixth-youngest player in NBA history to reach the 10,000-point plateau when he scored 18 points at Washington at age 26, trailing only Kobe Bryant, Bob McAdoo, Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with that distinction. He scored a career-high 50 points (including a career-high 21 field goals made) versus Detroit on November 23, 2001, becoming the first Hawks player to hit that mark since Dominique Wilkins poured in 52 points in 1991. Selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies (now Memphis) as an undergraduate out of California with the third pick of the 1996 NBA Draft, Abdur-Rahim has a long-standing history of community service involvement. He was named by The Sporting News as the NBA’s Number 1 Good Guy for 2004 after funding the Reef House in Atlanta through his Atlanta-based Future Foundation with the purpose of assisting at-risk and underprivileged youth.

Speaking of smart players and tinkering, Emeka Okafor once again spent the off-season experimenting with new training methods. He looks trimmer than he did, but says he’s slightly heavier than last season at around 265 pounds.

Okafor said he did a series of very specific exercises to work individual muscle groups. The goal was to break up some scar tissue that he felt was hurting his flexibility, without losing strength.

He looks springy in pickup games, but who’s to say if that’s about how he trained his body, or the rest he got throughout the off-season?

Euroleague.net reports: Perennial Serbian League champion Partizan has improved its roster for the upcoming 2008-09 Euroleague season by inking power forward Stephane Lasme to a one-year deal. Lasme (203, 25) arrives from the Miami Heat, where he averaged 5.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 16 NBA games last season, during which he also played for the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBDL.

InsideHoops.com editor says: I’ve seen Lasme just enough to feel that he could help an NBA team’s deep bench. A solid 9th-13th man worth giving a shot. The overseas experience should help him a bit.

The NBA last week confirmed a 10-game suspension for forward Darius Miles, who is with the Celtics on a nonguaranteed contract.

Once Miles returns (he will be eligible for a Nov. 15 visit to Milwaukee), his new teammates will be counting on him to produce the type of offensive spark James Posey provided last season.

Captain Paul Pierce's evaluation of the Celtics' offseason additions, including draft choices J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker: "We lost Posey [to New Orleans], and he was definitely a key to what we were doing last year.

"But there are a number of guys ready to step in, who can take on a bigger role. Leon Powe, Big Baby [Glen Davis], Tony Allen, Perk [Kendrick Perkins], and the rookies might surprise you. Rajon Rondo is getting better - people forget he is only in his second year. Darius Miles has been looking pretty good; he had a devastating knee injury, but he has been looking good and only time will tell.

"I'm used to having new guys come in fresh out of high school or a year out of college. But J.R. Giddens has three or four years of college experience and Bill Walker is mature for his age [20] and can definitely help us this year. These guys are much more mature than some of the young players I've been around."

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak had to clear numerous hurdles to sign China's Sun Yue. Yet Kupchak, a former Lakers player himself, admits he doesn't know if Sun will even make the regular-season roster. The 22-year-old Sun had eight points and two assists in the China national team's opening game defeat at the Olympics against Team USA, who had Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant in their roster. "I spoke to Kobe last week, because Team USA played against China and Kobe said that he knew who the guy was," Kupchak said. "He said he was competitive and feisty and he did not back down. I know that he's athletic enough. I like his size, I like his skill level. I think he's a ball-handling guard at 6ft 8in. "Those are all positives, but he hasn't played at this level and I think he'll show well, but the NBA is a different game. "He'll face challenges he hasn't faced before, but I don't think he'll back down."

Sun will be in pre-season camp with other Lakers hopefuls and will have every other opportunity to make the roster. Competition for places with a franchise that played in the NBA Finals last season will be fierce. "I think he'll embrace the challenge and at the end of the day if the guy is good enough after 28 days of training camp (and pre-season), we'll know it and he'll make the team," Kupchak said on the Lakers' official website. "It's not something that will be ferreted out in a week or two, maybe some guys will know in a week if they're good enough, but if you're with the team for 28 days, we'll know and he'll know, too."

Sun was enthusiastic about joining LA, but Kupchak admitted: "The hurdles were many. "We ended up getting it done, but if there's a gold star that goes to anybody (for getting this done) then it goes to (Lakers lawyer) Jim Perzik, because he had to go through a Chinese lawyer in Washington DC who represented the team, Aoshen, in China …"When you're dealing with a player that is under contract with another team internationally, they have to sever their relationships with that team and FIBA has to issue the NBA and the Lakers a letter saying that he is not longer under contract with anybody and you are free to sign him. "That's a process that literally took weeks and almost months to get accomplished. It took great patience from Jim. The (Aoshen) attorney in Washington DC was incredibly helpful in portraying our interests and how we do business to the team in China and was able to convey to them what has to take place in order for Sun to become a Laker."

Alvaro gave us the heads up that Kosta Perovic, who was waived by his NBA club Golden State Warriors last week, will be introduced to the Pamesa Valencia roster on Wednesday. Now it is not more than a side note for us that he left the NBA to play in Europe - Perovic is a solid player, but has not yet developed into a big star.

What really caught our eye is the way Perovic will be presented. Kosta Perovic will be introduced to - well to who?! - since this will happen on board of a cruise ship named MSC Simfonia. Sure. Valencia is right at the Spanish east coast, but why would you introduce a new player on a cruise ship? I wonder if the local media has book that trip aswell to cover this event.

Just by looking at the article on Pamesa’s web site, you can see that the real news is not Perovic, but the MSC Simfonia - Perovic gets mentioned one time in the beginning. THe rest of the article is all about that cruise ship.

In fact, Lasme shocked everyone with his shot blocking skills. Not only does he hold the record for most triple-doubles in one NCAA season along with Jason Kidd and Michael Anderson, but Lasme also became the first player to register four triple-doubles with 10 or more blocks in each of them. Lasme averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.1 blocks in 33 NCAA games in the 2006-07 season. He is also a member of the Gabonese national team.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Israel and Bulgaria added their names to the list of teams headed to EuroBasket 2009 on Saturday, leaving out some old familiar faces like France and Italy, who will need to battle for the last remaining ticket at next summer's last chance qualifying event. Those three join Serbia, Latvia, Turkey and Great Britain, who advanced on Wednesday as well as host Polan and the six teams that took part in the Summer Olympics – Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Greece, Germany and Croatia – plus Slovenia, which took part in the Pre-Olympic Qualifying tourney. On Saturday, FYROM won Group B when it bested Estonia 87-75 behind Zadar big man Todor Gecevski's 18 points and Portugal stunned Latvia 93-92. Israel crushed the Czech Republic 98-61 as Olympiacos’s Yotam Halperin recorded 25 points and 7 assists to clinch second place in Group D. That led to a ticket to EuroBasket when Turkey topped France 78-80 to finish the qualifying rounds as the only undefeated team.

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv announced Friday that it has released injured big man Marcus Fizer. In a statement to the media, the club said that it had notified the player and his agent of the decision. Fizer, whose original contract ran through the end of the upcoming season, is still recovering from a knee injury suffered during the Top 16 last season against Olympiacos. He averaged 11.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15 Euroleague games last season.
