Re: 2020 NBA Draft Night Thread
Ariza's contract is only guaranteed for $1.8 mil.
Dang, that makes it all the more better.

No it's not lol. It needs to be fully guaranteed for the Covington trade to go through, so it's going to be the full 12.8 on Detroits books.

Ok, so those protections are fantastic. This trade is great for us.

Well damn, that takes some wind out of the sails.

Why would Ariza give up 6 million for no reason?
Because why would he want to play for Detroit. Detroit would probably look to buy him out anyways.
In a shallow free agent class, Ariza can likely recoup that $6 mil via an MLE contract from a contender.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Night Thread
Real nice deal.
I wonder if they buy out Ariza now or maybe trade him at the deadline for more picks.
Either way, it made this draft a whole lot more interesting. I'm scared that Weaver is going to trade up for Ball now. What I'd do is take Williams at 7 and Lewis or Hampton at 16. That would be a real nice Haul for Weaver's first draft.

Yes, I understand the buyout point. He would just force them to buy him out at 12.8 or slightly less. Never seen a player give up half their salary in a buyout. There's no precedent for it.

Great trade after seeing the protections. Exciting stuff to see our GM making moves with at least some clear direction that makes sense

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Night Thread
Im much more happy with Williams at 7 as a lottery ticket if they ALSO get another lottery ticket at 16.
Pooling both of those to get Ball. Man, lets hope not!

He's 35 years old, and I would assume has no interest in wasting a year on a bottom feeder team. And as I mentioned in the previous post, he can likely make up most or even all of on the free agent market.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Night Thread
Thing is there should definitely be a PG there at 16. So if they dont trade up we might take a different position at 7 now

There is absolutely no precedent for it, especially for an older guy who is not likely to get $6 million on the open market. He's likely to get bought out, but it's likely only going to remove the vet min amount from his salary (roughly 2-3 million). That's what usually happens in these scenarios.
The rockets also paid $5 million for a future second from Detroit that's likely going to be in the 50s. The speculation is that it's actually a cash transaction to facilitate the Ariza deal. ie. Help pay Ariza's salary for Detroit. Unfortunately, that money doesn't decrease how much Ariza counts for the books.

Williams and Lewis were literally my best case scenario for this draft, it looks like that legitimately could happen. Here’s to hoping, picking up some whiskey and food as we speak lol

Kira Lewis Jr is still my favorite player in this draft. If we get him at 16, the woman is going to walk funny tomorrow at work.

There was never a precedent for anything, until it happens for the first time.
As a Pistons fan, of course I want to see his cap number as low as possible. He'll likely get bought out to get his cap number as low as possible, then he will sign a new contract as free agent. Both the Pistons and Ariza will be fine if he never steps foot in Little Ceasar's Arena.
