For the first time since he underwent surgery Jan. 9 on his left knee, Carlos Boozer is expected to practice today. The milestone will come almost three months to the day after Boozer went down in the Jazz's Nov. 19 victory over Milwaukee.

There's no telling how many practices he will need to feel comfortable enough to play in a game -- the earliest possibility is Saturday against New Orleans -- but as Boozer said Thursday, "I'm right there. That's what I think. I think I'm right there."

Boozer went through shooting drills and conditioning in practice Wednesday, but he did not scrimmage. He also received positive results from strength testing on his left knee, confirming that he can return to the court.

Nelson’s surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama was a success. He will now undergo 4-6 months of rehab. Nelson dislocated his shoulder and suffered the torn labrum on Feb. 2 against Dallas.

General Manager Otis Smith said going with the surgery option wasn’t that tough of a sell to Nelson in the end. “No, we’ve actually been talking everyday,” Smith said. “We talked this afternoon when he woke up from surgery and he seemed to be doing well. It was the right thing to do.”

Miami Heat's Jermaine O'Neal, James Jones are aching
Heat center Jermaine O'Neal and forward James Jones are day-to-day after getting injured on the same play in Wednesday night's loss to Minnesota.

Both visited specialists Thursday. O'Neal has a bruised right eye and James a bruised right hand, the team said. O'Neal practiced Thursday but left afterward, and Jones missed practice.During the third quarter Wednesday , O'Neal took a charge from the Timberwolves' Mike Miller and missed about a quarter after sustaining a bloody nose.

O'Neal said after the game that he experienced blurred vision immediately after the injury. Jones said his hand felt sore after getting caught in the collision and indicated the surgically repaired tendon in his right wrist was hurting. The former University of Miami standout had missed three months after undergoing surgery for a ruptured tendon in the wrist, sustained during the preseason. ''It's just swelling and more precautionary,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Jones' exam.

FLU SYMPTOMS FOR WADE
Dwyane Wade left practice after experiencing flulike symptoms, Spoelstra said. The team sent him home because he was vomiting.

New Orleans Hornets center Tyson Chandler rejoins teammates for road trip
With his trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded Wednesday after failing his physical examination because of a turf toe injury, center Tyson Chandler rejoined the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday and made the chartered flight with the team for Los Angeles.

Still, Chandler said he does not expect to play until possibly this upcoming Monday against Sacramento or Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons at New Orleans Arena. "I feel like I'm back for a reason,'' Chandler said. "I'm back so we can make this championship run. What makes it easy is the guys on side of me."

The 26-year old sounded unhappy with the trade attempt, but still plans to give his best effort when he returns to the lineup. "I don't play for management anyway or play for any owners or anything like that, I play for my teammates, my coaching staff and the fans of New Orleans," he said. "That's what I will continue to do.''

Is Oden Done Again?
Ah, the NBA trade deadline – the perfect distraction for the real news that should be making headlines in Portland right now: how long before Greg Oden returns to action?
Not in the immediate future, this much we know. According to Blazers head coach Nate McMillan, Oden will miss the next two games against the Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers and there is little confirmation about when to expect him back in action. "As of now, they (the doctors) didn't say anything as far as surgery being needed," McMillan told multiple media sources on Thursday, including Brian Hendrickson of the Vancouver Columbian. "It's still swelling there, still some tightness there. It's pretty close, I guess, to where it was."

Oden's left knee – as he's suffering from a chip fracture of the patella - will be re-evaluated on Monday before the team sets out on a three-game road trip to Houston, San Antonio and Minnesota and the team remains hopeful he will not miss more than these two games. But even though the Blazers have not yet scheduled a second MRI, the last thing McMillan or anyone within the organization wants to consider is Oden shutting it down for the remainder of the regular season. Considering it is one thing. Being forced to admit it is a whole different story. He's feeling tightness in the knee. He's feeling soreness. The swelling is there. More likely than not, there is also some doubt creeping in as well. Knowing Oden's injury history, it's hard not to let your mind go there. It's tough not to think about the words "done for the year". Chances are some in Portland have already thought along those lines. "This time of the season, you really want everybody to be healthy," McMillan said recently when asked about his concern for his young rookie center. "We want him back as soon as possible, so yes I am concerned as far as the number of games that he may miss."

Now just over halfway through his true rookie season, Oden's legacy continues to speak for itself. While he's clearly made an impact on Portland this year – leading all NBA rookies in double-doubles and the team in blocks and second in rebounds - this also marks his second stint on the injured reserve list this season. The total will reach nine games missed by Sunday. How many more to count thereafter? You can hear all the Sam Bowie references right about now. Very original. Those left over from the "Draft Durant" campaign in Portland two years ago will have a heyday with this one. They always do. Then again, haven't we been here before? Does this really come as a shock to anyone? Anytime Oden is hobbled, bumped, bruised or shelved, a red flag immediately goes up with a disclaimer about whether or not he should shut it down. This is one of those times. He'll only have to deal with that the rest of his career.

In the NBA we have a similar scenario, where teams make deals at the trade deadline that basically make them irrelevant for the rest of the season. Whether it's trading bad contracts or letting good players go to playoff teams, what's left behind is basically the NBA's version of a lame duck. Here are the lame duck teams left in the wake of Thursday's trade deadline.

The Detroit Pistons: I don't know if there's a more disappointing team in the NBA than the Pistons. It's amazing how one trade took them from playoff factors to mere playoff hopefuls. It's almost unfair to Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, and Tayshaun Prince that Joe Dumars didn't deal them to teams that are serious about winning instead of packing it in and rebuilding. Iverson's ending deal will help the team long-term, but Detroit's failure to make a trade makes them the team most likely to allow Charlotte, New York, or Chicago into the playoff picture.

Stoudemire Out Eight Weeks
A day after deciding to let the trade deadline pass without making a major money-saving move, the inactivity seemingly has turned incredibly costly for the Phoenix Suns.

The beleaguered Suns announced Friday that Amare Stoudemire was forced to undergo eye surgery to repair a partially detached retina suffered in a Wednesday night rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. It is Stoudemire's second eye injury since October and the All-Star forward could miss the rest of the regular season.

Stoudemire's return to physical activity has been estimated at eight weeks by the Suns. He underwent surgery Friday morning, although the club said in a statement that "recovery varies on a case-by-case basis."

Thunder Expected to Waive Sene
After making two deadline-day trades that bumped its roster to 16 players, the Thunder is expected to waive seldom-used reserve center Mo Sene, according to a league source with knowledge of the team’s plans.

NBA teams are allowed to carry only 15 players, and the acquisition of Thabo Sefolosha and Malik Rose pushed the Thunder’s roster over the limit.

Sene is in the final year of a deal that pays him $2.2 million this season. The Thunder will be responsible for the remaining portion of Sene’s contract. Sene will be placed on waivers for 48 hours, but it’s unlikely a team will claim him off waivers. After 48 hours, Sene will become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Sene is averaging 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in five games this season.

Jason Williams Wants to Return to the NBA
Jason Williams, the once-flashy veteran point guard, has filed a letter with the NBA to seek immediate reinstatement into the league, an internal NBA memo revealed on Thursday.

If the NBA’s Board of Governors approves his petition, which was sent to the league’s 30 teams on Wednesday, Williams could become a productive free agent for contenders needing point guard depth. League executives immediately speculated that Williams could return to the Miami Heat, who he helped win the 2006 NBA championship, or the defending champion Boston Celtics.

Even so, the Los Angeles Clippers would have exclusive rights to Williams, but it’s doubtful in their losing and cost-cutting state they would want to do anything but negotiate a buyout with him.

Ginobili Out at Least Two Weeks
At long last, test results came in on Manu Ginobili’s stubbornly sore lower right leg Thursday. The results are not as dire as they could have been. After administering slew of tests including X-rays, an MRI and a CAT scan, doctors determined Ginobili has a stress reaction in his right distal fibula, one of the bones in the ankle joint. He is expected to miss the next two to three weeks.

There is an important distinction in the diagnosis. Ginobili does not have a stress fracture, a crack in the bone. A stress reaction is a weakening of the bone, usually due to repetitive use, that can lead to fracture if not given time to heal.

Rest is the only prescription. Ginobili has already had a dose of that, having not played since Feb. 11 at Toronto. “New bone has already been laying down — they’ve seen it on the X-rays,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said before Thursday’s 83-79 victory over the Pistons. “So the healing process has already begun.”

Ivan in Phil: Do you see a Stuckey-development of Aaron Brooks after the departure of Rafer?

Travis Heath: I don't think it will be quite that pronounced, but I like Brooks a lot. His quickness is amazing.

Reza in Encino: I no this is out there, but with A.I.s desire to win a championship why not come back to denver for less money,,, think about it melo a.i. billups kmart and nene is your starting 5

Travis Heath: Not gonna happen. That ship has sailed. I love Chuck and he brought some good things to the table. However, it just wasn't the right mix for him in Denver for a number of different reasons. I would be absolutely shocked if he came back to Denver. The thing about A.I. is that he requires the ball in his hands like 75% of the time and you have to try and give him space to work. That would completey disrupt everything Denver is doing so well on offense right now.

Garnett returns to Boston, to miss at least three games
Celtics forward Kevin Garnett is heading back to Boston to be checked out by the team doctor after injuring his right knee against the Utah Jazz.

Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Garnett was traveling Friday, and his right knee strain was expected to be examined by Dr. Brian McKeon on Saturday. Garnett injured his knee while going up for an alley-oop late in the first half of Boston's 90-85 loss. He landed gingerly and motioned immediately to the bench for a substitute, then hopped on his good foot toward the locker room.

Twiss said Garnett was "not in tremendous pain" on Friday, but that the knee remained sore and stiff and the Celtics thought it best to be cautious and have Garnett examined.

Cory in Aurora, IL: What was a worse idea: Phoenix trying to reshape themselves as a defensive team, or Detroit trying to reshape themselves as an offensive team?

Travis Heath: Well, the idea of playing more defense in Phoenix wasn't a bad one. I just think they needed to hire a more veteran coach such as Jeff Van Gundy to implement that philosophy this past summer. Also, I'm not really sure the Pistons tried to reshape themselves as an offensive team. I actually see them as a team without an identity... either offensively or defensively. Say what you want about cap space, but Detroit is going to regret giving up on Chauncey so early in the game.

Travis Heath: Nothing any team did yesterday really impressed me. By far the best trade that has happened this season happened months ago when the Nuggets acquired Chauncey Billups from the Detroit Pistons.

Stoudemire Done: Phoenix Suns forward Amar'e Stoudemire underwent surgery on his eye (from Marc Stein of ESPN) for a detached retina and will likely miss the balance of the regular season. Return to physical activity is general set at around eight weeks, which would run into the first round of the 2009 NBA playoffs.

Stoudemire suffered the injury in Wednesday's win over the L.A. Clippers. It was the second eye injury he has suffered this season. So where does this leave the Suns? They decided their trade earlier this season of Raja Bell and Boris Diaw and Jason Richardson coupled with the firing of coach Terry Porter was enough, despite all the talk about possibly trading Stoudemire or even All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal. Part of that decision was the expectation Stoudemire would play better in new coach Alvin Gentry's uptempo system.

With Stoudemire out, the only power forward on the roster is Louis Amundson, hardly someone who can step into Stoudemire's shoes and put up the same numbers (although we do know he works hard and can take a punch if necessary). With O'Neal and rookie Robin Lopez the only other big men on the roster, it's a good thing the Suns had decided to push the tempo. This will allow a smaller player – perhaps Matt Barnes or Jared Dudley – to fill some time at power forward.Don't be surprised to see the Suns make a stopgap move, but it will be a very cheap one.

Cavs sign Johnson to second 10-day contract
The Cleveland Cavaliers signed guard Trey Johnson to a second 10-day contract on Friday.

Johnson has played in two games since he was signed on Feb. 3 from Bakersfield of the NBA Development League. With the Jam, he averaged 20.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The 6-foot-6 Johnson, a former high school teammate of Cavs guard Mo Williams, was a D-League All-Star.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are still listing guard Delonte West as doubtful for Friday night's game in Milwaukee. West has been out since early January with a broken right wrist. He has been cleared to play and has been practicing for more than a week, but the Cavs don't want to rush him back.
