Detroit trades Smith, Jennings, Datome #8
Denver trades Gallinari, Lawson, Fournier, #54

We don't have the assets to make a credible Love offer. I assume we wouldn't include Dre and with Monroe being a free agent all we'd have is KCP and the #8, and that is woefully short. Even with Monroe, it's short.

Uhhh, hell yes to this, but I can't see why Denver would want to downgrade from Lawson to Jennings (and give up Gallo) just to get the 8th pick and a messed up Josh Smith.

No

Gallinari's ACL injury scares me, I'll pass.

Ariza?

Does anyone else find it odd that his TWO best seasons were both contract seasons?

Huge NO from me on Ariza

Probably. But Klay....he is an AMAZING shooter. I think GS needs health and some shuffling a lot more than they need a 2nd All-Pro.

Ariza is a strong defender who can hit from distance effectively. He's not a guy you run offense through. He was miscast in Houston and New Orleans as they tried to run more through him. The reason why his two best seasons were contract years is because he was actually put in situations that played to his strengths.

I think he's set up to get overpaid this offseason. Seems like several teams are looking at him as a guy who fills a need and there's more teams with cap space than there are players to use that space on.

Not much in terms of shooters in FA market - everybody will get overpaid.

Moneyball approach says when everybody is looking to replicate three point bomber teams that are the current hotness and driving up prices it's time to do something different.

Given Stan Van was at the forefront of 4-1 offense, maybe he's got something new up his sleeve and all the talk about needing shooters is a smokescreen. Maybe we should go big and play bully ball and force these three point wing players into guarding post up situations.

From the Trade forum -

Jason Thompson, Travis Outlaw and Jason Terry to Detroit

-Saves $7 Million up front to spend this off-season and $30 Million long term.

Deron Williams to Sacramento

-Adds a stable veteran point guard.

Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings to Brooklyn

-Trades D-Will without tanking.

I like this trade and would do it. But, I can't fathom why the Kings would trade to have 3 max players in Gay, Deron and Cuzzins. That is like the worst max player combo ever. Who knows, it could work but just looks horrible.

So the Nets and Kings get starting caliber players but all we get is bench players(Outlaw and Terry are trash now). I can't see the Pistons doing it. We're not really hurting in the cap space department either.

May MLive article today has Van Gundy unlikely to make trades prior to seeing exactly what he has in camp and at the start of the season. Plan seems to be to convince Smith to come off the bench exclusively as PF with designs on him re-establishing value there both to help us win and for trade purposes if Smith doesn't want the 6th man role long term. Both Moose and Smith could be looking at 32 minutes a game - with Moose of course sliding over to center when Drummond is out of the game. SVG reportedly told ownership during his interview that three bigs together doesn't work and won't see it anymore.

None of the 3 bigs would be happy to play off the bench. It's just a waste of time.

Detroit trades:
Josh Smith
Tony Mitchell

Houston trades:
Terrence Jones
Jeremy Lin
2014 1st round pick

Why Detroit does it:
Well, duh! We get rid of Smith and build around Drumroe like SVG wants and grab a PF that can grow with Drumroe for the next 5+ years in a "Taj Gibson" type role. Jeremy Lin only counts 8.5 mill against the cap and is an expiring. Throw in the first rounder and we're on our way to heaven.

Why Houston does it:
Quite simple, they exited in the first round. If they want to make a serious push for the title acquiring a guy like Smith can be that piece to the puzzle they need to get them over the hump. He fits in perfectly and is that 3rd guy to complete their big 3. it also doesn't hurt that Smith and Howard have been best friends since their high school days. Tony Mitchell can be their next Terrence Jones grooming him the same way they did Jones.

You're against every Smoove trade that I can remember. He LOST games last year. He is older than the core. His fit here is highly questionable.

Jennings for Jason Thompson is fine. Possibly flat-out good. Possibly for both teams.

Turning Smoove into 2 expirings while opening up summer cap? That is GREAT. Terry and Outlaw might even be bought out, but the extra cap could land us a nice player like Hinrich or Dunleavy or Ariza.

Detroit will have 2 max bigs in 2 years and KCP/Singler/8th/GuyWeTradeFor will need raises sooner or later.

There is no team in the league that can spend intelligently with the reason being that "we're not really hurting in the cap space department." It makes more sense to say Smoove is our new Villanueva - that he loses games by being on the roster.

I would definitely be in favor of this trade. Of course, Houston is gunning for Kevin Love right now, so they wouldn't even entertain this deal until after Love's situation is resolved.

Nice proposal.

That Smennings for J.Terry, T.Outlaw, J.Thompson saves us over $6.5m next year and possibly $8m after buying out the 2 goobers. o.O
