After building an Olympic gold medal-winning team, Jerry Colangelo might make a run at another championship with USA Basketball. "I'm kind of leaning toward continuing, but we still have some things that we're talking through just in terms of organization," Colangelo said Monday at a luncheon benefiting the Special Olympics of Arizona. "I'm kind of inclined to continue because it is my connection" to basketball.

Colangelo, the former Phoenix Suns owner, took over as USA Basketball's managing director in 2005. He appointed Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski to lead the team and, in a change of policy, required players to make a three-year commitment.

The Americans swept the gold medal in Beijing, their first in a major international tournament since 2000. "It's my call whether I want to continue and get ready for London in 2012," Colangelo said. "You know what's really great? The infrastructure is in place for USA Basketball going forward." Colangelo said he's not sure if his duties would change. The U.S.' next major competition is the 2010 world championships in Turkey.

Sacramento Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim retired Monday because of a persistent right knee injury. The 31-year-old Abdur-Rahim played 12 NBA seasons for four teams, beginning his career in 1996 when the Vancouver Grizzlies made him the third overall draft pick. The 2002 All-Star averaged 18.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in his career, but the power forward reached the playoffs just once, with the Kings in 2006.

He appeared in just six games last season before getting season-ending surgery in December on his long-injured right knee. The former California star had two surgeries on his knee in six months last year to clean out the joint, but the pace of his recovery was frustratingly slow. "I came to grips with the fact that, health-wise, I won't be able to get back to the condition and level that is needed to play in the NBA," Abdur-Rahim said. "My right knee has become arthritic over the years, and is to the point where it won't allow me do the things and play at the level at which I'm accustomed to playing. As tough as it is to come to grips with, it's the reality."

Abdur-Rahim also played for Atlanta and Portland before joining the Kings in 2005. He averaged at least 18.7 points in each of his first 7½ NBA seasons while becoming the sixth-youngest player in NBA history to score 10,000 points, but knee problems plagued his three years with the Kings. "He has had an exemplary career as a player and citizen," said Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations. "It is unfortunate for any productive career to be felled by injury. However, no one can ever doubt Shareef's effort, commitment or desire to excel." The Kings plan to hire Abdur-Rahim to fill a yet-to-be-determined job with the organization, Petrie said.

The Phoenix Suns have signed Slovenian point guard Goran Dragic to a multiyear contract and say he will play for the team this season. The Suns acquired rights to the quick, sharpshooting 22-year-old left-hander in a draft-day trade with the San Antonio Spurs. The Suns see the 6-foot-3, 190-pound European as a backup and eventual replacement for 34-year-old Steve Nash.

The NBA team reached a buyout agreement with Dragic's Spanish team TAU Ceramica. "It's been a lengthy process," Phoenix general manager Steve Kerr said Monday in a Suns news release announcing the signing. Although Dragic was the 45th overall pick, the Suns considered him second only to No. 1 pick Derrick Rose among point guards in the draft. In a video shown on YouTube of the Suns headquarters during the draft, Kerr clenched his fist in triumph, then exchanged high-fives with everyone in the room after completing the trade that nabbed Dragic in the second round. The video also shows Dragic in a pre-draft workout for Phoenix. He did not work out for any other NBA team. The Suns sent San Antonio their second-round pick -- the 48th overall -- along with a 2009 second-round choice and cash. The Spurs used that pick to select forward-guard Malik Hairston of Oregon.

Dragic had been part of the Slovenian national team since 2006. During the 2007 European championships, he played 28 minutes in Slovenia's upset of Tony Parker-led France. Dragic spent last season with Union Olimpija, helping the team win the Slovenia League championship and the Slovenian Cup. He averaged 9.7 points, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 13 games. He also averaged 12 points, 3.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 28 Adriatic League games. "When I was a kid, it was my dream to play in the NBA," Dragic told the Arizona Republic after he was drafted. "It was my wish that the Suns pick me." The Suns, in their first season under coach Terry Porter, hold their media day next Monday, then begin a five-day training camp in Tucson on Tuesday.

More than 100 fans welcomed Spanish guard Rudy Fernandez to the Portland Trail Blazers upon his arrival to the city with chants of "Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!" "It was a good surprise," Fernandez said. "When I arrived, I say, 'OK, let's go practice now. Let's go.'" The 6-foot-6 Olympian arrived at Portland International Airport on Monday and was whisked to the Rose Garden, where the Blazers held a news conference to introduce him. "He's a team player. He's a great kid," general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "I think he'll raise the level of competition for everyone."

Fernandez played for Spain in Beijing, scoring 22 points in the gold medal game against the United States. The U.S. team won, 118-107. Portland coach Nate McMillan was an assistant coach for the U.S. team. He and some of the other coaches went to watch Spain during the competition, with Kobe Bryant tagging along. McMillan recounted how Bryant said to him: "He's your kid, huh? He's pretty good." Pritchard said the team would give Fernandez time to acclimate to Portland and find a place to live. The Blazers would work on getting him a tutor to help him with his English. The Trail Blazers open training camp Sept. 30 at the team's practice facility in Tualatin, Ore. The team opens preseason play against Sacramento on Oct. 7 at the Rose Garden Arena. McMillan said the team would also give Fernandez time to catch up on the NBA style of play. "But once he does, he's going to be a special player," McMillan said.

Fernandez has played the past seven seasons for DKV Joventut Badalona of the Spanish ACB League. Last season he averaged 21.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals for the team, which won both the ULEB Cup and the Copa del Rey. Portland acquired Fernandez in a trade with Phoenix during the 2007 NBA draft. "My dream is to play against the best players in the world and Portland gave me that opportunity," he said. Fernandez is good friends with Blazers guard Sergio Rodriguez, who is also from Spain.

Remember when Rasheed Wallace got 40 technicals in one season? As my friend Tony told anyone who would listen at the time, that's a record that will never be broken. It's one of the all-time great performances of sports.

Less than three years ago, Juan Dixon was scoring 20 points or more in 10 out of 23 games. Not even quite 30 for another couple of weeks, he's still looking for a team.

http://www.mlive.com/pistons/index.ssf/ ... lcond.html

It's not unusual for the Detroit Pistons' Rasheed Wallace to begin training camp in great shape. But maintaining it for an entire season is another story. Keeping Wallace's body in tip-top condition beyond the first couple months of the season was a topic of discussion between new Pistons coach Michael Curry and Wallace this summer. It's too soon to tell how that will play out this season, but Curry said he likes where Wallace's physique is heading into training camp, which begins next week. "Arnie Kander (Detroit's strength and conditioning coach) we feel is the best in the business," Curry said. "I don't think we've taken full advantage of him over the last few years. (Wallace) has done a really good job of that this summer."

The benefits of a better-conditioned Wallace can pay off in many ways for a Detroit team that is again among the handful of serious title contenders this season. As a starter, a well-conditioned Wallace gives Curry the flexibility to play the 6-foot-11 big man for longer stretches, if needed. Improved health would be especially beneficial for Wallace and the Pistons in the playoffs, which, in recent years, has been a time when Detroit collectively played some of its worst basketball. Wallace's scoring in the postseason compared to his regular season averages have been slightly higher the past two seasons. But in the playoffs, Detroit needs him to be more than just a scorer.Because of his size and versatility, the Pistons look for him to not only be an inside scoring force and solid defender, but a rebounder as well. However, rebounding has been the one area in which Wallace has not been as effective in the playoffs as he was in the regular season. In three of the past four postseasons for the Pistons, Wallace's rebounding numbers have been lower from his regular season average. "I know a lot of people talk about Rasheed going down in the post," Curry said. "I talked to him a lot about that last year. We're going to call more plays for Rasheed -- not only Rasheed, but other guys to get down in the post because getting points in the paint is going to be one of our main focuses."But it takes a lot of conditioning, especially as you get older, to get down in the post."

However, Wallace's ability to maintain in good condition throughout the season won't necessarily mean he'll log more minutes. In fact, Curry said he wouldn't mind seeing Wallace's playing time reduced. "What we want to do, is be more efficient in the minutes that he plays," Curry said of Wallace, who turned 34 years old last week. "We can reduce his minutes, but we want to do that with him being more efficient with the minutes that he does play, being a bigger post presence for us and continuing to be good defensively."

NBA scouts continue to offer dire warnings about the NBA draft class of 2009. After two stellar years, thanks to amazing college freshman classes, a draft drought may be on the way. "Even if you assume everyone declares for the draft next June," one longtime NBA executive said, "you'll struggle to find much star power or depth next year. My scouts are walking around depressed already and it's September." Sometimes things change over the course of the college basketball season, but scouts walked away from a number of summer events convinced that the NBA draft pool is in recession. Still, a few players helped themselves this summer, whether it was playing for their national teams at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing or working as camp counselors at LeBron James' annual summer camp in Akron, Ohio. Here's who's hot and who's not, according to a handful of NBA scouts:

HotRicky Rubio, PG, Spain :Rubio's solid, and sometimes dazzling, play in Beijing had scouts buzzing. It's not everyday you see a 17-year-old play a critical role on the silver-medal team at the Olympics. His defensive presence was critical to Spain's success in the tournament. NBA players also raved about Rubio's poise and basketball IQ. If he produces in the Euroleague this season, he seems like a lock for the top 5 and a possible candidate for the No. 1 pick in the draft.
Jerome Jordan, C, Tulsa :Jordan was the hot name at the LeBron James Skills Academy in July. NBA scouts are always looking for big guys with a pulse, and Jordan showed scintillating potential here. Consistently matched up against potential lottery prospect Hasheem Thabeet, Jordan stole the show. While his two-year numbers at Tulsa don't blow you away, Jordan did seem to turn it on late last season. He is still somewhat raw offensively, but he is a proven rebounder and shot-blocker. If he can continue to perfect the little jump hook he showed off at LeBron's camp, he could move into the top 10 this season -- the same way big-men projects seem to do every year.
James Harden, SG, Arizona State :Harden was the other player who seemed to really stand out at LeBron's camp. He didn't have the buzz of other Pac-10 freshmen like O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love last season, but he was named to the All-Pac-10 first team along with Mayo and Love. Scouts have questioned his athleticism, but they are beginning to hedge a bit after Harden showed off some hops and quickness that they didn't see his freshman year.
Patrick Mills, PG, St. Mary's: Mills played for the Australian national team in the Olympics and gave Team USA fits with his quickness. Chris Paul and Deron Williams both had a difficult time guarding him. Mills ended up leading Australia with 20 points in its quarterfinal loss to Team USA. His performance was enough for scouts to start buzzing about his potential to be a mid-first-round pick.
B.J. Mullens, C, Ohio State :Mullens didn't play in the Olympics or at LeBron's camp, but as NBA scouts have scoured footage this summer, more and more are saying that the Buckeyes' freshman is the odds-on favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft. "You look at his size, his athleticism and his skill level and he's the guy, more than anyone else in this draft, that stands out," one NBA scout said. "If anyone in this draft has the potential to be a dominant NBA player, it's him. I'm not saying he'll get there. He's got a lot to work on. The NBA always has had a love affair with big guys and no big guy in the draft has the potential of Mullens. If I was a betting man, I'd say he goes No. 1."I know it is ridiculously early to be talking about this, but I'm actually fairly persuaded by their arguments. If you look at the potential five worst teams in the league -- the Nets, Knicks, Thunder, Grizzlies and Timberwolves -- all of them need a prime-time center. Only two of them, the Knicks and Timberwolves, are really in the market for a point guard. Blake Griffin will also get some love for the top spot, but the more you think about it, Mullens is the guy if he performs. Of course, that's a big if. Last year some scouts were saying similar things about DeAndre Jordan, who slipped into the second round on draft night.

Not:Austin Daye, SF, Gonzaga:Daye got a huge scare when he hurt himself in LeBron's camp. Originally, reports were that he tore his ACL; however, ESPN.com's Andy Katz reported that Daye was told by doctors at UCLA that he had a bone bruise and a minor, low-grade tear that wouldn't require surgery. While Gonzaga coaches are saying Daye is ready to start playing again, the loss of a summer to work on his game could have an impact on his development. Combine that with the lackluster performance he was having at the camp before the injury and scouts are no longer banking on him as a high lottery pick next year.
Hasheem Thabeet, C, UConn:Thabeet has the combination of size and athleticism that NBA scouts dream about. He's also an elite shot-blocker who could step in immediately and change the game on the defensive end of the floor. But his development on the offensive end continues to be slow. Scouts thought he was outplayed, at times badly, by Jerome Jordan at LeBron's camp. Given his size and his potential, along with the relative weakness of this year's draft class, Thabeet still projects as a top-10 prospect. However, more and more scouts are wondering aloud if he deserves to go that high.
Darren Collison, PG, UCLA:Collison's decision to skip the 2008 draft shocked practically everyone. At the time, he already had three years of college under his belt and UCLA was bringing in a loaded freshman class led by super stud Jrue Holiday and Malcolm Lee. Now, heading into the college season, I'm hearing whispers out of UCLA that Holiday is so good that it won't be long before he, not Collison, is running the offense at UCLA. I'd expect them to get significant time together in the backcourt, but if Holiday is as good as advertised, Collison could suffer from the comparisons and slip in the draft -- the same way he did when compared to Russell Westbrook last season.

Patrick Hayes did some great interviews with Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo and Coach Curry. What I found promising was Curry's words on D. "I want to be a team, of course, that's really good defensively. We've been good defensively but I want to be good defensively consistently. Let's understand that our guys have been really good over the last six or seven years, but what we've had problems (with) at times is maintaining that consistency and playing at an extremely high level. What we have to do is make sure we do all the little things so we can play at that high level consistently and that's something we haven't done in the past. That comes with, I feel, being in great shape condition wise, taking care of all the little things offensively and defensively on a day-to-day basis and we have to do that as a staff and that is what we will enforce going into training camp." Rodney reiterates "We're gonna be picking up full court, trying to get back to our old ways of playing Bad Boys defense. That's something to look forward to this coming year."

I had a chance to go to the Shock game yesterday. Unfortunately they couldn't finish off Indiana, but I did get a chance to see the improvements they made to the Palace this summer. From the new lighted section number signs to the extra large murals and pictures in the concourse, that building looks and feels new.

Scott Perry on Sheed : "You make it a point of emphasis, and if you make something a point of emphasis with a player consistently enough and long enough, you can get results from it. Rasheed is a very smart basketball player. It's Mike’s job to hold everybody accountable to do what they need to get done to win. And Rasheed has always been about winning. It starts there - the consistent stressing of it. That doesn’t mean he won't take any more perimeter jump shots, because that's a weapon and a strength of his, as well. But I think Rasheed himself would be the first to agree with you-hey, whatever it's going to take to win. If you stress it and it makes sense to players, there's a tendency for them to follow along."

It has been believed since Donnie Walsh took over the Knicks in April that Stephon Marbury's tumultuous days as a Knick were numbered. Now the matter is days from being official, Newsday has learned.

Several persons with knowledge of the situation have indicated that the Knicks are planning to part ways with Marbury by the end of the week. One caveat is the approval of Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, who must sign off on yet another multimillion-dollar payoff for his NBA team. Marbury is in the final year of his contract, which is to pay him $21.9 million.

The Knicks will likely place Marbury on waivers and, once he clears, begin negotiating a buyout. Marbury will then be free to sign with another team; the Miami Heat have a desperate need at point guard.

Still without the long-term security he had sought upon last season's acquisition from the Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat forward Shawn Marion said today he would not allow that issue to diminish his enthusiasm for Saturday's start of training camp. "We're still talking and negotiating, and it is what it is right now," said the versatile forward, who will earn $17.8 million this season. "Right now, my focus is on playing."

Marion joined Heat guard Marcus Banks, his former Suns teammate, in front of the Miami-Dade courthouse at a team promotional event that included shooting games and interactions with the lunchtime crowd.

Marion said the start of camp in many ways would be a fresh start, even without the extension. After arriving in February in the trade for center Shaquille O'Neal, Marion played just 11 games alongside guard Dwyane Wade before injuries sidelined both.

Banks said the way he sees it he has been trying for the past three months to prove that he should be the starting point guard. Entering his sixth season, Banks said he is ready to have his "own" team. But he also said he has no issue sharing everything he knows with rookie Mario Chalmers.
