Mavs activate Stackhouse, will play vs. Rockets
Dallas Mavericks guard Jerry Stackhouse is expected to play against Houston after sitting out three months with a right foot injury.

Stackhouse has played in only eight games this season and has been out since scoring two points in a loss to Orlando on Nov. 14. Coach Rick Carlisle says Stackhouse will "get some minutes" Friday against the Rockets.

The two-time All-Star has been working on his conditioning for about two weeks. The Mavericks entered Friday's game in seventh place in the West, one-half game behind the Rockets. Dallas needs some scoring punch off the bench after Jason Terry broke a bone in his left hand Feb. 7. Terry is the Mavs' second-leading scorer, averaging 19.9 points per game.

Raptors' Bosh returns to lineup from knee injury
Toronto forward Chris Bosh has returned to the lineup against New York after missing five games because of a sprained right knee.

Bosh was hurt in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 4 and withdrew from the All-Star Game. He was cleared to play after coach Jay Triano said he had a good practice Thursday.

Friday night was the first time Bosh was able to play alongside forward Shawn Marion, who the Raptors acquired from Miami during All-Star weekend.

Jazz owner Miller dies at age 64
Larry H. Miller, the car sales mogul who turned the Utah Jazz into one of the NBA's most stable teams, died Friday from complications of type 2 diabetes. He was 64. Miller was at home with his family when he passed away, the team said in a statement.

Miller had a heart attack in June 2008, then spent nearly two months in the hospital for complications from diabetes. He was in a wheelchair after his release from the hospital and his medical problems continued, leading to the amputation of his legs six inches below the knee in January.

A tireless worker with a knack for the most minute details, Miller started his career in an auto parts shop, then built a car dealership empire that made him one of Utah's most recognized and influential people. Miller expanded his realm in 1985 when he bought a 50 percent share of the Jazz as the team appeared on the verge of moving to Miami. Miller bought the rest of the team a year later, declining an offer that would have sent the team to Minnesota, and the team in the smallest media market in the NBA flourished. The Jazz made two straight appearances in the NBA finals in 1997 and 1998.

Amaré likely out for regular season
Suns All-Star power forward Amaré Stoudemire is expected to miss the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery this morning to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye.

Stoudemire could return to physical activity in eight weeks but a team press release said that would “depend upon his healing process” and that his surgeon, Dr. Pravin Dugel of Spectra Eye Institute in Sun City, stressed that recoveries are on a case-by-case basis. The eight-week mark is two days after the Suns' regular-season finale.

This is the same eye that kept Stoudemire out during training camp when Boris Diaw poked it during a practice. At that time, Stoudemire suffered a partially torn iris with no damage to his cornea, retina or lens.

Manu Ginobili – The San Antonio Spurs guard will be out about three weeks with a stress reaction in his right ankle. An MRI taken showed the problem had already started to clear itself up, but rest is the best cure.

Danny Granger – The Indiana Pacers small forward will also miss about three weeks with a partial tendon tear in the sole his right foot. This is different than the right knee pain he has been playing through of late, but perhaps the time off will let that get better as well.

Jameer Nelson – The Orlando Magic point guard had surgery on his shoulder yesterday and will be out for about six months. That puts him getting back on the floor in August sometime, so he should be good to go for training camp in October.

Kevin Garnett – The Boston Celtics power forward strained his right knee Thursday night and is on his way back to Boston for an MRI. He will miss at least the next three games while the Celtics continue their road trip, pending the outcome of the test.

Greg Oden – The Portland Trail Blazers center is out at least two more games with a bone chip of the patella (knee cap) in this right knee. He banged it just before the All-Star break with Golden State Warriors swingman Corey Maggette. The Blazers are still evaluating him, and surgery is always a possibility to clean out the fragment.

Carlos Boozer – The Utah Jazz power forward will practice today for the first time since his left knee surgery six weeks ago. The earliest he will see the court is Saturday and he feels good, but a lot depends on today's practice.

Mike Dunleavy – The Indiana Pacers guard is out indefinitely with his right knee injury, and he is currently getting various medical opinions. That's never a good sign.

Rockets clear F Cook, G Lowry for game vs. Mavericks
Houston Rockets forward Brian Cook and guard Kyle Lowry were cleared to play in Friday's game against the Dallas Mavericks.

The pair were sent to the Rockets in a three-team trade that sent point guard Rafer Alston to the Orlando Magic.

A first-round pick in 2006, Lowry averaged 7.6 points in 49 games for the Memphis Grizzlies, while the little-used Cook averaged just 3.0 points in 21 games.

Jazz owner Larry Miller dies
The Utah Jazz lost their patriarch on Friday, as team owner Larry H. Miller died at the age of 64 due to complications from type 2 diabetes.

The team announced that Miller passed away at his home, surrounded by family members. Miller had endured severe health problems recently and had both of his legs removed below the knee last month. The owner of the Jazz for the last 23 years, Miller first purchased 50 percent of the franchise in 1985, then took care of the remaining half just one year later and helped make the team an institution in Salt Lake City.

He is one of the most prominent and well-known businessmen in the Salt Lake metro area, owning 39 auto dealerships and several movie theaters, among many other business ventures. He is survived by his wife Gail, four sons, one daughter and 21 grandchildren.

Knicks dress Wilcox, sit Hughes
New York Knicks forward Chris Wilcox, who was acquired prior to Thursday's trade deadline, will dress for Friday's game against the Toronto Raptors.

Wilcox arrived from the Oklahoma City Thunder for forward Malik Rose in a swap of expiring contracts.

The Knicks also acquired Larry Hughes from the Chicago Bulls for Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Anthony Roberson. Hughes will not be active against the Raptors.

Jazz F Boozer returns to practice
Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer practiced Friday for the first time since having surgery and could return to the lineup early next week. The two-time All-Star has missed 42 straight games since suffering a strained quadriceps tendon in his left knee during a game against Milwaukee on November 19.

Loose cartilage in the knee continued to nag Boozer and he eventually required surgery, which was performed on January 10. Friday was the first attempt he made to practice since the surgery. Boozer could return for Monday's game against Atlanta. "Two practices is what we agreed on (Thursday). So, today, another day and then from there," Boozer told the Deseret News.

Boozer has averaged 20.5 points, 11.7 rebounds in 12 games. The Jazz were 8-4 with Boozer in the lineup and are 24-19 without him.

Blazers C Oden to miss next two games
Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will miss the next two games to rest his injured left knee.On Wednesday, the Blazers announced Oden has a chipped patella, the latest setback in the former No. 1 overall draft pick's injury-plagued career.

Oden will miss Friday's game against Atlanta and Sunday's showdown with the Los Angeles Clippers. Joel Przybilla will start in his place. Blazers coach Nate McMillan told the Colombian on Friday Oden doesn't need surgery, "as of now."

Oden has had a rocky start to his career. He was selected first overall in the 2007 draft but missed all of last season after undergoing microfracture knee surgery. The 7-foot Oden returned healthy for the start of this campaign only to suffer a sprained right foot in the season opener. He missed more than three weeks before returning in late November and has averaged 9.0 points and 7.2 rebounds in 46 games.

Celtics F Garnett out at least three games
Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett will miss the last three games of the team's West Coast road trip. The All-Star returned to Boston Friday to have an MRI on his strained right knee.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year will miss contests against Phoenix, Denver and the Los Angeles Clippers. Boston returns home to face Indiana on February 27. Garnett suffered the injury in the second quarter of Thursday's 90-85 loss to Utah. Garnett was injured with 1:56 left in the first half when he landed awkwardly while going up for a rebound. Garnett avoided putting any weight on the leg as he was helped to the locker room.

The Celtics' emotional leader, Garnett took the floor for warmups before the second half, but returned to the locker room and was shut down as a precaution. Garnett had eight points and two rebounds in just under 15 minutes. The 14-year veteran is averaging 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds in 53 games.

Suns F Stoudemire could miss rest of regular season
The Phoenix Suns were looking to deal All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire at the trade deadline. That didn't happen, but they will not have his service for quite some time anyway. Stoudemire likely will miss the remainder of the regular season after having surgery to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye Friday.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Pravin Dugel at Spectra Eye Institute in Sun City, Arizona. Stoudemire's return to physical activity is estimated at eight weeks depending upon his healing process. Dr. Dugel stressed that recovery varies on a case-by-case basis.

Stoudemire suffered the injury on Wednesday when he was poked in the eye during the Suns' 142-119 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. It is the second eye surgery in less than a year for Stoudemire, who suffered a partially torn iris early in training camp in October after being inadvertently poked in the eye by former teammate Boris Diaw. A four-time All-Star, Stoudemire is averaging a team-high 21.4 points and 8.1 rebounds in 53 games."We are very glad to hear that Amare should have a 100 percent recovery relative to his vision and his long-term prognosis is excellent," Suns general manager Steve Kerr said. "Obviously, it is very disappointing to lose him at this time. We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amare's health and the health of all our players is our number one concern."
