The man handles the ball like Harden does and shoots it lights out. He’s gonna do very well with us. I wish he has Drummond as his center but we missed that boat. All these moves signal that we’re keeping Wood btw. No reason not to resign him with all that cap space. In my opinion, it’s Blake that I’m wondering why he’s still here. Yet again Westbrook and harden are still on Houston. So be prepared for a big trade coming up. I can see us abusing our cap space. Weaver got really creative using our cap space and getting 2 FRPs. It’s quite impressive actually. He didn’t give up anything of value to get them (Kennard). I’m not really afraid of losing Kennard. I feel like his game style is easy to get in the NBA specially when he was about to get paid. It’s pretty simple. Our GM is going all out tanking for the next 3 years.
Wow!
I wrote this haha
I was sooo wrong in the beginning and then I ended it with a bang!
I was right Weaver wanted to tank hard since trading our pick and he probably planned to keep us this depleted of talent. I think he failed to get any sort of traction for a free agent this summer and clicked the panic mode and traded for Harris 1 hour before free agency started. He got outsmarted and outperformed, the Morris trade turned out to be a disaster. Horrendous management by Weaver.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
Oh god…
I don’t have a bold take that aged horribly in the thread, but I can’t help but wince at my “Awesome!” vote.
He wasn’t a consensus pick but he was a widely popular choice at the time.
It goes to show that while we’re right to be critical of the job Weaver has done, as he’s getting paid to do it and we’re not, we’re not basketball savants either. We just do the best we can to have opinions with the information available to us.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
It’s great looking back at these old posts. We dont get it right all the time.
Halliburton would have been a better pick, a few of us called it, and a lot of people liked Hayes. I guess we should all stay a little more humble.
Also, this was a horrible draft. Edwards, Lonzo, Halliburton, Maxey, Banes all good, a few other ok players, but lots of losers in the draft. Not an easy job to get it right.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
I don't blame anyone for their rosy opinions. For the past 15 years or so the draft has been like our Christmas day, and of course when you sit down and open your presents they are always shiny and you have high hopes.
I thought the Hayes pick was great at the time, but I think I was also sucked in by the hype that sites like The Ringer had created. I do remember watching YouTube videos of him playing in some subpar German league and wondering why he wasn't dominating as much as he should be if he was a legitimate NBA prospect.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
Look at draft history, and most are busts.. It's why I rather trade a lottery pick for a 25-yr old who can play on both sides of the ball, and then use the 2nd round pick (early) on the best player available, maybe buy one with cash for a second 2nd-round pick and either select a 4-yr college player, or a tough foreign guy. I've never ever been a fan of picks. There's always a couple of guys who aren't drafted to be had for cheap, anyway, but I like constructing a team of players we know, not what those scouts/relatives liked in a paper of statistics.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
I was seeing Hayes vs. Haliburton thread, thought it was worth (re-)resuscitating the past.
I didn't know either Hayes or Haliburton well. Haliburton had the better shooting and pedigree. Hayes had Bynumite repping him though. I figured, even if Hayes never became a great shooter, he wouldn't be so offensively impotent on an average day by year 4. I remember it wasn't just about Hayes or Haliburton, but the serious talk of trading assets to go up in the draft and get LaMelo, which I was against. NO ONE had Maxey high, and he'd be a top-tier PG in a re-draft.

Re: Grade the Hayes pick!
I was disappointed I didn't see my draft hot take in this thread...I don't watch a lot of college ball so I'm not surprised I stayed out of it. I can't recall how I felt about the Hayes pick, but I've been generally more of a Killian supporter than most.

whitehops wrote:pretty much the best pick we could've made at #7. i like haliburton a little more but hayes absolutely has more potential to be a lead guy, which is what we need.
in my defense a lot of the scouting reports made him sound like he had james harden potential. in hindsight maybe it was just because he was left handed and hit a few step back threes. i'd have to go back but i think haliburton plays with a lot more burst now, i remember thinking he wasn't that athletic. i was also skeptical about his shot translating to the nba with his weird low form, but he shot 43% from 3 in college on good volume. also had a huge leap from his freshman to sophomore year and averaged 6 apg, which is pretty high in college.
but yeah the way i remember it was that we desperately needed a point guard so it pretty much came down to hayes or haliburton. hayes was considered the upside guy and haliburtion the safer choice. lesson learned: pick the guy you know who knows how to play basketball.

I don’t Bad shot and can only go left. Hilburton will be far better. Heck even Maxes and Quickley will be better.
Y'all need to hire this man.

This draft also reflects how easy it is for NBA executives to screw up. Six of the players originally drafted in the lottery don't show up at all in our redraft, including three of the top five picks (James Wiseman at No. 2, Patrick Williams at No. 4 and Isaac Okoro at No. 5). And three of our top five were taken at picks No. 12 or later.

I am 100% confident he would do a much better job than Arn Tellem's son.

I said at the time. This was the wrong draft to go all in. It was during the lockdown. Front offices had very limited information, they couldn't scout properly.
So obviously a lot of teams picked the wrong guys, it sucks that we went for 3 picks in this draft and an early 2nd and we missed on all of them as expected.

Same thing I just wrote, and I said that just after the draft, that's when I started hating Weaver and asking for his head, he went all in during a draft during a lockdown, the result was obvious.

I mean, given that this post was many months into their rookie seasons, Killian was absolutely horrific as a rookie and guys like Maxey/Quickly had already popped off for 30+ point games, it's not exactly a Nostradamus take lol
