O'Neal

After sitting out the past five games with a shoulder strain, it sounds like Shaquille O’Neal will return to the Cavaliers’ lineup Wednesday. Then again, O’Neal’s 37-year-old body and Cleveland’s training staff, charged with maintaining his health until the postseason, could have other plans. O’Neal is averaging just 11.3 points on 53.1% shooting, both the lowest of his 17-year career. O’Neal who last averaged 20.0 points for a season in 2005-06, has scored in the 20s just once this season (21 points vs. Washington Nov. 3). But O’Neal doesn’t have to be the unstoppable offensive force he once was; LeBron James has that role sewn up. And the Cavaliers, who were 6-3 when Shaq exited the lineup, even went 4-1 without him. It appears O’Neal has been a greater difference-maker on defense, despite modest statistics of 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Cleveland has allowed nearly 10 more points per game without O’Neal in the middle, from 91.7 to 101.0 points per game. The Cavaliers adjusted accordingly, raising their scoring by nearly six points to 102.8. “[O’Neal] gives them a strong body on the inside and helps Z [Zydrunas Illgauskas] also in that position,” said Pistons coach John Kuester. “Shaq is a proven winner and has been with a number of teams and is very capable of bringing the juice for them another year.” Kuester has expressed similar “bringing the juice” sentiments about his own starting center, Ben Wallace, who will work to make O’Neal’s return as uncomfortable as possible. Wallace, 35, is one of the few defenders over the past decade to have won his share of battles with O’Neal. And he’ll be plenty motivated after Cleveland traded him to Phoenix this summer to acquire Shaq… not that Wallace has ever played with a chip on his shoulder or anything like that.

Pistons report: Getting inside
There are a lot of people around the NBA who respect and admire the way Phoenix guard Steve Nash plays. Count Pistons coach John Kuester as one of Nash's fans. "He'll go down as one of the greatest point guards of all time," Kuester said before the teams played Sunday.

What makes Nash unique is his passion for the game, said Kuester, and his desire to win and compete. "Other players enjoy playing with him," Kuester said, "and that's as big a compliment as you can have."Nash went out later in the evening and put on a typical clinic as the Suns defeated the Pistons 117-91. "Once they have an opportunity, they (the Suns) come down and do a great job of penetrating," Kuester said. "And Nash is just so unselfish." Having completed their four-game western trip, the Pistons return home to face Cleveland on Wednesday.

SUNS 117, PISTONS 91: Playing their fourth game in six nights and the last game of a West Coast swing, the Pistons were listless in losing to the Suns. Phoenix shot a season-high 57.5 percent from the floor against a normally aggressive Pistons defense. Charlie Villanueva and DaJuan Summers each had 13 points for the Pistons. For Summers, that was a career high for the rookie.

Pistons are not must-see TV
Published by Matt Watson on November 25, 2009 in Alley-Oops, Around the Internets and The Media.
Remember when the schedule was released and we were all bummed at how the Pistons would be making only four appearances on national TV? Well, yeah, about that … it’s now down to three. From Dave Pemberton:

The NBA announced that Detroit’s game at Philadelphia on Dec. 9 will no longer appear on ESPN. The Chicago at Atlanta game will now be televised by ESPN. The Pistons still have three ESPN games this season and four NBA TV games.

Bynum gets love, Stuckey gets none
And not just any kind of love, but cold, hard, objective love from ESPN stat-guru John Hollinger, who tabbed Bynum his starting point guard on his All-Underrated Team: Fans in Detroit already are wondering why Bynum isn’t starting, which is pretty amazing considering he began the season as the fourth guard in a three-guard rotation. Believe it or not, the 6-foot powder keg led the Pistons in PER last season, and early this season he’s shown that it was no fluke.Bynum is averaging a point every two minutes and shooting 50 percent from the floor, and while his instincts are as a scorer, he’s found the open man enough to keep defenses honest. Another big surprise is all the time he’s spent at the free throw line this season, which is an added source of easy points that has helped raise his PER considerably. While I’m happy to see Bynum get the attention, calling him “underrated” is still an extreme understatement — intentionally or not, it sounds an awful lot like “best overachiever,” a backhanded compliment if I ever heard one. No, Bynum is more than “underrated,” he’s also the best bargain in the entire NBA. How many other players are earning the league minimum while essentially* leading their team in PER? *[His 17.4 PER was tops among all Pistons who played more than two games last year (Chauncey technically posted a 17.5 PER in two games), and his 20.0 PER is tops among all Pistons who have played more than one game this year (Rip’s small-sample-size inflated 29.6 PER is technically first). He also leads the team in assist percentage while ranking fifth in usage, which should help dispel the myth that his game revolves around dominating the ball and breaking down defenders one-on-one. Stuckey, meanwhile, looks to be regressing — especially in regards to getting his teammates involved. Through 14 games, his assist percentage is down to 19.0, down from 23.9 as a rookie and 26.1 last year. Perhaps he’s felt more pressure to score with Hamilton getting injured, or perhaps he simply misses having the two veterans help facilitate the offense.

Either way, his point guard skills aren’t improving. Maybe forcing a combo guard to man the point is a bad idea? Trouble is, his shooting has substantially declined, as well, as Brian Packey noticed at Motown String Music:On the season, Stuckey is now shooting 39%, four percentage points lower than what he finished with last year, his second season in the NBA. […] Next, I looked at his shot chart to try and get an idea where Stuckey’s poor shooting totals were coming from. I was pretty surprised to see that his struggles are actually with what should be the easiest shots. He’s shooting a head scratching 39% on shots near the basket and a respectable 42% from mid-range. […] Again, what’s most bothersome to me is that he’s making just 40% of what are essentially layups. For comparative purposes, Lebron James is hitting those shots at a 71% clip and Will Bynum is making 56% this year. I honestly believe, with his size and strength, Stuckey should be somewhere in the middle of those two. Brian was using stats from NBA’s Hot Spots, but HoopData can break the data down even more: Stuckey is shooting 45% at the rim (4.6 attempts per game) but just 29% on his remaining shots within 10 feet (2.4 attempts per game). [Note: there’s no overlap here, these are two separate sets of attempts]. The league average, meanwhile, is 60.8% and 43.2%, respectively. [And, since I’m sure you’re curious, Bynum’s numbers are 61% (4.2 attempts) and 18% (0.8 attempts). Not great, but not horrible considering he either attacks the rim or backs off to beyond 10 feet, where he’s surprisingly solid.] Maybe it’s a fluke thing that will correct itself? Last year Stuckey shot 50% at the rim; as a rookie, he shot 49% — both a good 10 percentage points below league average. Clearly this year’s numbers will matter a whole lot more once we have a better sample size, but historically speaking the data backs up what I’ve seen with my own eyes: Stuckey’s marvelous ability to slice through the paint is at least partially handicapped by his inability to finish at the rim on a consistent (read: league-average) basis.

Part of this is certainly due to athleticism (everyone isn’t born with Bynum’s hops, but when’s the last time you saw Stuckey dunk in traffic?) but some might just be technique (to my untrained eyes, it seems Stuckey tends to square up for a two-handed shot, often shooting on his way down, instead of leaning in with a finger roll or floater). Whatever the case, I hope Stuckey soon learns that, despite his superb driving ability, he’s not a natural-born scorer in the paint, and finding the open man upon penetrating might be the better option than forcing a shot. Of course, that’s easier said than done with the marvelous pass-catching ability of Ben Wallace and Kwame Brown in the low post, but still, that should be taking into account before taking off with a head full of steam for the basket. There’s still plenty to like about Stuckey’s future — he’s making great use of his size and strength rebounding the ball, and John Kuester is on the record as saying Stuckey has the potential to be one of the top defensive point guards in the league — but it’s still a bit worrisome to see that, 14 games into his third year, he’s nearly as unpolished offensively as he was his rookie year. I haven’t seen him comment on this specifically, but I suspect this is a big reason why Kuester has the Pistons playing at a snail’s pace (87.7 possessions per game, slowest in the league) yet again — every time the Pistons try to run, they fail. Eventually getting two playmakers in Hamilton and Prince back in the fold will help … but so would playing Bynum 37 minutes a game instead of Stuckey. For whatever it’s worth, I didn’t intend for this post to be so long — I already linked to Patrick Hayes’ excellent (and more structured) comparison of the two last week. I simply wanted to mention Hollinger’s article while briefly mentioning Motown String Music’s post, but, well, I’m wordy — and lack the ability to self-edit, especially at un-godly hours of the morning. But seriously, why can’t Bynum be the real prize? For all the talk about Stuckey being the franchise cornerstone, let’s not miss the fact that he’s had more chances to prove himself — by far — and has come up wanting. Stuckey has 171 NBA games (regular season and playoff) under his belt; Bynum, just 90. The disparity in terms of minutes played is even more drastic: Stuckey has 4635 career minutes; Bynum, 1430. At what point do you re-consider which player is the future? I’m not saying we’re there yet, but we have to be getting close.

Rockets notes: Battier gets MRI of left foot
Battier's foot OK
When Tracy McGrady went for his much-publicized MRI on Monday, he was not alone. Shane Battier also had an MRI to make sure there was not additional damage to his left foot.

With no injury found beyond soreness, Battier returned to practice on Tuesday and said he felt better after the day off. “We had matching MRIs,” Battier said. “It was like a spa. We have side-by-side MRI machines. I was getting a manicure while they were looking at my ankle. Mac was getting a facial.

“It (Monday's day off) is going to be a long-term benefit. It's one of those things you have to deal with. You're going to have nicknack injuries. Unfortunately, mine's early on. Once we figure out a treatment that sort of hits home, you roll with it and things feel better. Last year, I had some problems and then we found a treatment that was good for the pain I was having, and I didn't have a problem after that.”

Orlando Magic notes: PG Jameer Nelson begins electrical stimulation treatments on his left knee
Orlando Magic PG Jameer Nelson said Tuesday that the tear in his lateral meniscus in his left knee was more extensive than doctors previously thought. "It was a little bigger than they thought," Nelson said. "It doesn't make any difference if you had to go in and fix it. Don't worry. I'll still have my hops."

Dr. Craig Mintzer, the club's team doctor, performed Nelson's surgery on Nov. 18.Some teammates have been forecasting a quicker return for Nelson then the original four-to-six week prognosis. When asked about how far he was from a come back, Nelson said, coyly, "Weeks. Four to six. That's what I say. I don't know."

But Nelson also said he wasn't coming back last season after sustaining a shoulder injury --- and surprised everyone by playing in the NBA Finals. "I just got to get it right," he said. Nelson said he started electrical stimulation treatments on Tuesday. He was injured late in the Magic's game Nov. 16 against the Charlotte Bobcats at Amway Arena.

Shaquille O'Neal won't play tonight against Pistons
Cleveland Cavaliers star center Shaquille O'Neal will not play against the Pistons on Wednesday night at The Palace (Fox Sports Detroit, 8 p.m.). O'Neal has an injured shoulder. This will be the sixth consecutive game he has missed.

O'Neal received treatment on the shoulder during the Cavaliers' shootaround Wednesday at The Palace and did not work out with the team. "He won't play tonight," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said after shootaround. "He wants to play, but it's my decision (that he won't)."

O'Neal was injured when trying to block a shot by Miami's Michael Beasley on Nov. 12. He won't say which shoulder is injured.

The Passing of Abe Pollin: The NBA lost another great owner this week when Wizards' owner Abe Pollin died yesterday. Pollin had been battling a rare brain disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy.

It had been decided some time ago that when Abe did eventually pass, minority owner Ted Leonsis would take over ownership of Washington Sports & Entertainment. Leonsis previously bought two of Pollin's teams—the NHL's Washington Capitals and the WNBA's Washington Mystics. Leonsis has the right of first refusal to buy the rest of the Washington Sports and Entertainment Holdings and it is believed he'll close the transaction in the coming weeks.

Pollin bought the Baltimore Bullets in 1964 for $1 million; the franchise is now valued at over $353 million. From all of us at HOOPSWORLD, we send our thoughts and prayers to the Wizards' family on their loss.

Mike in Det ::
I got a question for you. If Prince is out the whole year is there any kind of compinsation by the NBA, like there was for Yao Ming?

Steve Kyler:
A team that loses a player can apply for an Disabled Player exception... this gets them 50% of the players salary or the average player salary (roughly $5 million) - this is something the team applies for, is reviewed by independent doctors. From an Insurance point of view, the NBA's insurance carrier picks up 80% of a players salary after he misses 41 consecutive games.... so not only could Detroit get an exception to add or acquire another player... they also can be relieved from some of the real costs too.
