Knick of Time
The Pistons went into the weekend understanding that this was their chance – their last best chance, probably – to position themselves for a playoffs run. It was the start of a nine-game stretch to close January that included eight home games, including a back-to-back with one of the teams just ahead of them in the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks, after hosting New Orleans to open the weekend. They grabbed an overtime win Friday, and as precious as it was, the fear was the toll it exacted would sap their resolve to come back 24 hours later, especially given the minutes logged by veterans Rip Hamilton and Ben Wallace. But a 12-0 run late in the first half gave them a cushion, and a 9-0 run early in the third quarter expanded the lead to 21 – which was just enough to withstand a Knicks rally to within two points with 18 seconds left. The 94-90 win gives the Pistons a three-game winning streak on the heels of the injury-induced 13-game losing streak, keeping them within contact of the crowded playoff field ahead of them. John Kuester said after Friday’s win that had the Pistons not come out on top, “it would have been a tough pill to swallow.” Had they lost to the Knicks – considering the size of their lead and the ramifications of losing to one of the teams they’re chasing – it would have been like trying to digest a bowling ball. “We came out and played well for three quarters – we were trying to share the ball, we were defending extremely well – and the fourth quarter, I thought we looked at the scoreboard and kept thinking the time was going to fly off,” Kuester said. “Unfortunately, in the NBA, it doesn’t.”

The Pistons saw clear signs of fatigue from Hamilton and Wallace early. Hamilton missed five of his first six shots. Wallace didn’t grab a rebound in a seven-minute stint to start the game and David Lee terrorized the Pistons – as he had in a Dec. 29 Knicks win at The Palace when he went for 30 points and 12 boards – with 16 points in the first quarter en route to a near triple-double: 26 points, 17 boards, nine assists. But the Pistons got him under control, thanks in large measure to Jason Maxiell, and only Danilo Gallinari (25 points) and a late spurt from Nate Robinson – who drained three 3-pointers in the last 5:14 – provided much in the way of scoring for the Knicks. The Pistons got a little bit of offense from a lot of sources, the residue of better ball movement that’s helped spark their mini-renaissance. Chris Wilcox (14 points, 10 boards) helped them get off to a good start, Rodney Stuckey (20 points, four rebounds, four assists) was terrific in the first half one night after laboring through a game while dehydrated and taking IV fluids at a hospital afterward, Charlie Villanueva (19 points, 10 boards) punished the Knicks for trying to guard him with swingman Wilson Chandler and Chucky Atkins was again solid in 24 minutes. It was Atkins who pretty much iced the win, coming off the bench to nail two free throws with nine seconds left after Danilo Gallinaro took advantage of a Jonas Jerebko gaffe – fouling him while shooting a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left and the Pistons ahead by five.

Before sinking the pressure-packed free throws, Atkins first had to chase down Jerebko’s inbounds pass – a bounce pass that seemed to hang in the air forever and was nearly reached first by Robinson. “I was trying to stay out of Nate Robinson’s eyesight,” Atkins said. “I knew he was looking at me and playing for the steal. I saw he didn’t really have his eyes on me, so I tried to make a back cut. Jonas put the ball out there and I wanted to make sure I ran it down. Fortunately for us, I ran it down, got fouled and stepped up and made the two free throws.” So how big was that win? Well, it lifted the Pistons to 14-25 and allowed them to leapfrog Indiana, a loser at home to New Orleans, while creeping a game closer to the Knicks, now 16-24. They remain five games in the loss column behind the Nos. 6 and 8 playoff seeds, Toronto and Chicago. It’s not an ideal situation, but it’s not nearly as bleak as it appeared after losing at Chicago five nights earlier to extend the losing streak to 13. “Guys are having fun,” Villanueva said. “Starting to see a little bit of chemistry out there and guys are kind of gelling together. We’ve got to keep it going.” “Things can change quickly,” Atkins said. “One game can lead to a streak. With us, it was important to get that confidence. As you can see now, guys are sharing the ball and it’s a lot more fun to play now. And I think, because we’re sharing the ball and so many guys are contributing, the other team can’t really key on one guy. It’s real fun out there right now. We’ve got to keep this thing rolling and continue to improve.”

TEAM COLORS
White Hot – Whatever was in the IV fluids Rodney Stuckey needed to hydrate himself after dragging his body through Friday’s overtime win over New Orleans, he ought to consider patent and franchise opportunities. Stuckey attacked the basket aggressively from the start, finishing with 20 points. He did most of his damage in the first half, racking up 15 points, four assists and three steals and getting into the lane for eight of his 11 shot attempts. Stuckey took three bags of IV fluids and didn’t get home until 4 a.m. “I will just fight through it,” he said. “When (Ben Gordon) and Will (Bynum) get back, maybe I’ll get some rest. But for now, I have to keep fighting.”

BLUE COLLAR – Split the ballot: Jason Maxiell for the defense he threw at David Lee after Lee’s 16-point first quarter and Chris Wilcox for his offense. It was Wilcox’s most productive game as a Piston, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards. The Knicks tried guarding both Pistons power forwards, Wilcox and Charlie Villanueva, with swingman Wilson Chandler and they overpowered him in the post. “I just wanted to come out and be aggressive,” Wilcox said. “Me and coach talked before the last game and I told him I was going to try to bring more energy.” But Wilcox was plagued by foul trouble all night against New Orleans, limiting him to just 12 minutes. “Tonight I just came out from the beginning and tried to play hard.”

RED FLAG – The win was critical, but with a rematch looming less than 48 hours away in a Monday holiday matinee at Madison Square Garden, did the Pistons give the Knicks the impetus they need to win a game that would do real damage to their playoff ambitions? “The thing that’s going to scare us is the fact they had that big run in the fourth quarter,” Chucky Atkins said. “Those guys are going to come out at home really confident.”

Pistons overcome late snooze to win third straight
The Pistons, coming off an overtime victory Friday, were supposed to be tired. However, they were in the process of putting together their most consistent effort of the season against the equally-weary New York Knicks -- until the fourth quarter. They held on to win their third straight, 94-90, on Saturday, using guile and a favorable call. With the Knicks trailing by three with 19 seconds left, guard Nate Robinson threw up an errant running one-hander, and Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey and Knicks forward David Lee went for the ball as it headed out of bounds. After officials used instant replay, they determined Lee touched it, and the Pistons escaped, nearly giving up a 21-point lead. "We played well for three quarters," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "They made some shots. I think we kept looking at the scoreboard and kept thinking time was going to fly off, and in the NBA it doesn't." On the prospect of losing a huge lead, as the Pistons almost did against the Hornets, Kuester said, "It would have been a tough pill to swallow." The Pistons built a 64-43 lead in the third quarter before tired legs -- or complacency -- set in.

Stuckey, who was hospitalized for dehydration after Friday night's game against New Orleans, showed little sign of exhaustion, playing 42 minutes, leading the Pistons with 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kuester called Stuckey's play "phenomenal." "I will fight through it," said Stuckey, who had to get an IV Friday night. "When BG (Ben Gordon) and Will (Bynum) get back maybe I will get some rest." Lee was a thorn in the Pistons' side in their last meeting, with 30 points and 12 rebounds. With the Pistons coming off an overtime game and Lee being one assist shy of a triple-double Friday night, he was expected to dominate. When he scored 16 in the first quarter, it looked like another long night for the Piston big men. Ben Wallace, who had 21 rebounds against New Orleans, took the challenge personally. He blocked two straight Lee shots in the second half when Lee tried bullying him inside. Lee finished with 26 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists, but his game wasn't as fluid as in his first trip to Detroit. "We were fortunate to do a better job in the post area," Kuester said.

The power forward position, which has been in flux all season, proved to be fruitful. Chris Wilcox and Charlie Villanueva played the parts of thunder and lightning. Wilcox had eight points and six rebounds in the first quarter on his way to a 14-point, 10-rebound night. "He did some great things, giving us a lot of energy in 17 minutes," Kuester said. Said Wilcox: "I just stayed professional until it was my turn. We knew what (Lee) did to us the first time and we wanted to focus on him." When Villanueva replaced Wilcox, he found his groove. No matter what the Knicks tried, they couldn't stop Villanueva from scoring 12 in the first half, as he ignited a 16-2 run that pushed the Pistons' lead to 17. "It helps me get into a consistent rhythm," said Villanueva, who finished with 19 points. "They had a little guy (Wilson Chandler) on me." "We really milked that play," Kuester said. "He was on a roll -- he had a very good game. I was very pleased with him." The Pistons took advantage of the Knicks' unconventional lineups and rode the hot hand on the way to one of their most efficient first halves of the season. They controlled the glass and shared the wealth offensively, with five players in double figures. The Pistons play the Knicks in New York on Monday.

LeBron James scored 13 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter and the Cleveland Cavaliers survived a 3-point attempt at the final buzzer by Baron Davis for a 102-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night

Mo Williams added 18 points for the Eastern Conference-leading Cavaliers. Reserve guard Delonte West, who didn't participate in the morning shootaround because of stomach issues, played 29 minutes and finished with 14 points.

Rasual Butler tied a career high with 33 points for the banged-up Clippers and Eric Gordon added a season-high 28. Center Chris Kaman missed his fourth straight game because of a sore lower back, and Al Thornton sat out due to a sprained left ankle.

For Three! Pistons top Knicks
What Happened:
Detroit rode solid frontcourt performances to a 20 point lead in the third quarter, then stopped playing. This resulted in a four point victory, in spite of a near triple double from David Lee.

The Good:
Welcome to the team Chris Wilcox. Wilcox notched a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. He injected some life into a team that showed signs of fatigue after an OT win the night before. Charlie V. continued to demonstrate why he should be playing close to the basket, grabbing 10 board to go with 19 points in spite of a 1-6 performance from behind the three point arc.

The Pistons continued their defensive resurgence, and outrebounded the Knicks 51-39, allowing them to win despite 39% shooting.

The Bad:
Jason Maxiell played just as many minutes as Wilcox, and did nothing with them. He has continued his inexplicable regression from last year. Oh, and the Pistons shot poorly across the board (39%, 31%, 72%).

The Eric Stoltz Unsung Hero:
How about Atkins, who posted the highest +/- of the game (+9), scored ten points on 3-5 shooting, and made two free throws to seal the win? Sing about that.

The Takeaway:
The Pistons are going to need to play better than this to edge into the playoff race, but a win on the end of a back-to-back is a rare thing indeed. The Pistons have two days off before travelling to New York to play these guys again.

A Potential Pistons Trade
As the NBA trade deadline gets closer, it has become apparent that the Detroit Pistons need a low post scorer. One possible candidate is Al Jefferson of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In order to get Jefferson, the Pistons would have to give up either Richard Hamilton or Tayshaun Prince. The most likely of the two to be dealt is Tayshaun Prince.

For this to financially work, Prince would have to be traded along with Chris Wilcox or someone with a similar contract. This trade would benefit both teams, as Detroit would get a low post presence and Minnesota would get one of the best defensive small forwards in the league. Prince was great on the Pistons during their Eastern Conference Championship years, but with Detroit's new offense he just doesn't seem to fit in. Since Minnesota already has an All Star calliber PF/C in Kevin Love, they could probably use a talented SF over Al Jefferson. Tayshaun Prince's contract also expire's in only two years, which is an added bonus.

This is what Detroit's starting lineup could look like if this trade went through:
PG: Rodney Stuckey, SG: Rip Hamilton, SF: Charlie Villanueva/Jonas Jerebko, PF: Al Jefferson, C: Ben Wallace
Even though it is just one new player for the Pistons, teams would now have to focus on defending down low near the basket, which would create more space for the guards. I doubt this trade could take Detroit all the way back up to Boston, Orlando, and Cleveland's status, but it could help them compete. The last piece they would need is a true point guard. However, they may have to wait a few years for that or get lucky in next year's draft

Don't bet against Wings, Pistons sharing downtown arena
It is possible, perhaps even likely, that within this decade the Red Wings and Pistons will partner to build and share a sports arena in downtown Detroit, sources told The Detroit News. Mike and Marian Ilitch, owners of the Red Wings, have not renewed their lease at Joe Louis Arena beyond this season, and face more than $10 million in structural repair at the dilapidated arena this summer if the team is to play there next season. Going back to the Joe, it seems, is a last resort. So the Ilitches have been looking for a temporary home while they sort out, if, when, where and how they might build a new arena in downtown Detroit. The Wings and Palace Sports and Entertainment, overseers of The Palace, have been working on a lease agreement for over a year. The Ilitches toured The Palace in December 2008. The Palace submitted a five-year lease offer to the Ilitches, who made a counteroffer -- presumably for fewer years. The Palace is still sitting on that counteroffer. It might make more sense for the Wings to work a lease deal with Ford Field.

If the Wings rented Ford Field, the Ilitches could keep all the ancillary revenue from their games in the city. However, there has not been talk between the parties to discuss that option. Still, to move the Red Wings to North Oakland County could be risky. The core fan base is still Metro Detroit and Downriver. The Wings would rope in more corporate money by moving to The Palace, but would lose the Hockeytown atmosphere. In the meantime, Pistons owner Karen Davidson seriously is considering selling the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment. She already has had a conversation with NBA commissioner David Stern on the process and protocol for attracting potential buyers. Once she sells, there would be nothing keeping the Pistons tethered to The Palace. There also has been a lot of chatter about the Ilitches making an offer to buy the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment. They may have thought about it, but according to sources, Mike Ilitch is not a fan of the NBA. While he might be interested in The Palace, he has no interest in buying the Pistons.

So, in the end, it makes sense for the Pistons and Wings to partner for two critical reasons:
• In addition to the Wings needing a new home, the long-term plan at Palace Sports and Entertainment has been to build a new arena before 2020.
• With both organizations needing arenas in this economically-bereft region, it's hard to imagine either being able to raise the money alone any time soon.
Moving the Pistons back downtown -- something that has been debated for years and always rejected by the late Bill Davidson -- would create a huge buzz. And The Palace still would be viable as a concert and entertainment venue.

Area Pistons fans speak out
Gerome Tremble
15, Detroit

Why have the Pistons struggled? Because they've made a lot of messed-up moves. They've lost good players like Chauncey Billups.
Which Piston would you most like to see traded? I don't want any of them traded. I'd like to stick with this team.
Do you have confidence in Joe Dumars' ability to build another title contender? I'm not that confident in his work. He's been going down the drain since 2004.
What position needs the biggest upgrade? Point guard. We really don't have one, and I just really don't like Will Bynum that much.
How do you feel about off-season acquisitions Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon? I think they were smart decisions. I think they will help build this team. I'm happy with those two.
Will the Pistons make the playoffs? I really don't think they'll make the playoffs. The way they've been playing doesn't give me much confidence.

Tim Demesa
35, Sterling Heights

Why have the Pistons struggled? They got rid of good players like Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups. And also because of injuries.
Which Piston would you most like to see traded? Trading any one of them wouldn't really upset me. Rodney Stuckey would probably have the best trade value.
Do you have confidence in Joe Dumars' ability to build another title contender? Oh, yeah. He played for championship teams; he built it before, and he can do it again.
What position needs the biggest upgrade? Power forward. The power forwards they have aren't really getting rebounds, and they don't play defense correctly.
How do you feel about off-season acquisitions Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon? I wouldn't mind if they got rid of them next week. Neither can be a franchise player.
Will the Pistons make the playoffs? No. Right now they're way too sloppy, and they're not playing as a team.

Matt Mordarski
28, Canton

Why have the Pistons struggled? Injuries, a new coaching staff, a new system and a lack of chemistry.
Which Piston would you most like to see traded? Tayshaun Prince. He lacks defense, and he's overrated. They could probably get good value for him.
Do you have confidence in Joe Dumars' ability to build another title contender? Yes. He's going to need some time, though.
What position needs the biggest upgrade? Point guard. We don't have a true point guard. We don't have a leader. I do like Will Bynum as a backup.
How do you feel about off-season acquisitions Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon? I think they're overpaid for bench players. Charlie Villanueva is still young, and I think he has the tools to eventually get it done.
Will the Pistons make the playoffs? I hope not. They need as many lottery balls as they can get.
Kevin Johnson
43, Harper Woods

Why have the Pistons struggled? Coaching. I like John Kuester, but the players don't see him as a coach. I think they still look at him as an assistant.
Which Piston would you most like to see traded? Anyone that is good trade bait. If we could get a solid big man, we could then get rid of Chris Wilcox and Kwame Brown.
Do you have confidence in Joe Dumars' ability to build another title contender? Yup. Joe's about hardworking players. He'll get the right guys. We're one player away from contending.
What position needs the biggest upgrade? A good center that can score and play good defense. I like Ben Wallace at center, but they need another good one to back him up.
Will the Pistons make the playoffs? I hope so. I think they could be one of the last teams to get in. I'd rather they make the playoffs and get experience than get a high draft pick.
