Pistons' Jason Maxiell donates his Camaro for charity raffle
Jason Maxiell of the Pistons owns a classic 1989 Chevrolet Camaro. But he's giving it away for a good cause.

The Pistons will sell raffle tickets from March 16 through April 7 for a chance to win Maxiell's car. Tickets will be one for $5, three for $10 and 10 for $20. Proceeds from the raffle will support the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The event is organized by the Pistons Care Telethon. Tickets can be purchased at the kiosk stand in front of Section 110 at The Palace during any Pistons home game through April 7, or by visiting pistons.com.

Maxiell will present the keys to his car to the winner during halftime of the Pistons' final home game, April 12 against Toronto. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. "I came up with this idea as a way to join forces with the Pistons Care Telethon and help those who need it most in our community," said Maxiell. "I'm excited to get our fans involved in this great cause."

Detroit Pistons Draft Dreams: Hassan Whiteside
OK, Ottist3 and Orlando ... your day has arrived. After much clamoring in the comments for Hassan Whiteside, we'll take a look at the big freshman from the Thundering Herd. Like Keith Benson, Whiteside is a bit of a project center. Unlike Benson, however, Whiteside is only a freshman and is much, much better at his age than Benson was, suggesting he has a higher ceiling than everyone's favorite Golden Grizzly.

Measurables: 7-0, 235 pounds, freshman F/C at Marshall.
Stats: 13.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 5.4 blocks, 52 percent field goal percentage in 26.6 minutes per game.
Projected:18th (DraftExpress); 11th (NBADraft.net).
Why he fits: First, size. While he still has to add strength, he's not a complete bean-pole as a freshman. He stays in the paint, he rebounds. He leads the country in blocked shots. Despite his inexperience, he'd step in and at least contribute immediately with his shot-blocking presence in the paint, something the Pistons sorely need, particularly if Ben Wallace doesn't return.
Why he doesn't fit: Conference USA is not exactly a power conference, so while Whiteside can undoubtedly block shots, he hasn't been going against NBA caliber bigs while he's put up numbers this season. As with any mid-major player who makes it to the NBA, he'll have to make a big adjustment when it comes to competition level. And big men generally take longer to develop than guards, so it probably wouldn't be fair to expect more than spot contributions from Whiteside early in his career. His size will get him on the court, but he'll have a lot to learn if he enters the draft.
Why I'd draft him: The Pistons have two needs -- size and playmakers who can get their own shot. Unfortunately, this draft is a bit light on playmakers. It is deep in bigs, although many, like Whiteside, fit more into the "upside" category than the "finished product" one. Depending on where the Pistons draft, and depending on who stays in school and who declares, a player like Whiteside could very well be the best available when the Pistons pick. I'm always leery of bigs, but taking a big who's a project vs. taking a perimeter player with limited ceiling appear to be the options for teams after the first five or so picks. In that scenario, Whiteside has as much potential as anyone in the draft.

Davidson's death, rough economy lead to Pistons' demise
The team has a losing record, the playoffs are a dream, the arena's half empty, there's no passion in the air and the franchise could be sold and/or possibly moved. Who would've thought the Pistons would ever fit that description? In better days, when owner Bill Davidson was alive and the economy was humming, there weren't many NBA teams healthier or more successful. Over the last decade and a half, the Pistons were a model of efficiency, unlike other products that roll off the assembly line in Detroit. They reeked of stability, leadership and organization and were a proud symbol of what was right about the NBA during the Golden Age. They built a pristine arena in the suburbs and became the first to travel exclusively by private jet. They drafted well, traded well and were well-coached. And they won, quite regularly, with eight straight playoff appearances, the third longest streak in the NBA (after the Spurs and Mavs) entering this season. Revenue and results were strong all around. The only thing more startling than their demise is how swiftly the crash arrived. They must feel like they just ran into a Rick Mahorn pick. Just a few years ago the Pistons were regulars in the Eastern Conference finals and the Palace was, as usual, sold out. Now, they're guaranteed a second straight losing season, the Palace is rife with no-shows and the roster lacks an All-Star or even a bubbling young talent in the Kevin Durant/Tyreke Evans mold. Also, Karen Davidson, the widow of Mr. D, has said she's actively looking for a buyer.

What happened? Well, circumstances both within and beyond their control have doomed the Pistons. The collapse of the regional economy hit them harder than any NBA team. That's because Detroit and the surrounding 'burbs are dealing with a triple-whammy: loss of the main industry, jobs and homes. That's had a direct effect on attendance, which is down roughly 16 percent, easily the biggest drop in the NBA. There was a six-year stretch last decade where the Pistons led the NBA in attendance five times. Put it this way: the playful voice of public-address announcer John Mason ("Deeeee-troit basket-ball!") now carries a longer echo than normal. Also, when Davidson died, the Pistons lost their anchor. Davidson belongs on the Mount Rushmore of modern-day NBA owners because of the profitable and smart way he ran the business. The Pistons generated millions and the privately owned Palace was paid for just a few years after it opened. Davidson also kept Tom Wilson as president with Jack McCloskey and later Joe Dumars as general managers. He had the right people in the right places. He was a true visionary and loved the Pistons, but treated them as a business, not a plaything. The economy tanking and Davidson passing, almost simultaneously, were unfortunate setbacks for the club. Injuries also piled up for the Pistons this year, but even when healthy, the Pistons haven't been productive. Most of their key players are shooting or scoring at or near career lows. Plus, some key decisions made by Dumars backfired. Passing up Carmelo Anthony for Darko Milicic, no big deal at the time because the Pistons won the 2004 title, is haunting them now. Trading Chauncey Billups for cap space and Allen Iverson, and then the strategy of spending heavily last summer on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva hasn't turned the Pistons into winners. Those "thank-you" contracts given to Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince during the prosperous years are preventing the Pistons from trading either player. At least for quality assets.

After winning for a decade, it's quite understandable the Pistons had to enter a rebuilding process. A team must be extremely lucky, especially in this free-agent era, to string together so many winning seasons and trips to the conference finals. In that regard, maybe the real issue is how the Pistons remarkably kept churning out playoff appearances without, until now, paying the price for it. The off-the-court issues are steep. Finding a buyer in this market, in this economy, might be a challenge for Mrs. Davidson. And there's a civic tug-of-war brewing at the moment. Detroit mayor Dave Bing is actively trying to get the Pistons back downtown, in a proposed shared new arena with the Red Wings (curiously, the man behind the new building is Tom Wilson, the former Pistons president). That idea was met with a stinging rebuttal from Oakland County executive Brooks Patterson, saying it's the Red Wings who should move from Detroit and share the Palace with the Pistons. The immediate goal is to bring back the buzz. That search will lead to the Draft, where Dumars must find another Tayshaun. Not the next Darko. Then pray that Gordon's first year in town was just a one-time hiccup. Hope isn't lost. Fortunes can change in the NBA with work. Nobody knows that better than the Pistons. They opened the last decade by trading Grant Hill for Ben Wallace and signing Billups from the discount bin to fuel a long and satisfying run. They closed the decade by growing old overnight. From old to bold. Sounds like a plan.

Thunder sign former Arizona standout Shakur
The Oklahoma City Thunder has signed former Arizona guard Mustafa Shakur to a 10-day contract.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti announced the deal on Tuesday. Shakur is being called up from the Thunder's NBA Development League affiliate in Tulsa, where he was averaging 20.7 points and 7.2 assists per game.

Shakur went undrafted out of Arizona in 2007 and played overseas in Poland, Spain and Greece in recent years.

Big Ben visits Brookfield
In 2004, Dr. Devang Doshi flew from Iowa to see Ben Wallace and the Pistons defeat the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Last week, Dr. Doshi’s son, Neal, didn’t have to go anywhere. Ben Wallace came to him. The Pistons center visited Neal, 10, and his sister, Riya, 8, at their school, Brookfield Academy in West Bloomfield, last week after Neal won the “Bring a Pistons' Player to School Day” contest on Pistons.com. Wallace conducted a Q-and-A with the students and teachers, which gave Neal the chance to ask Wallace when he started to believe the Pistons would upset the Lakers for the 2004 NBA title. “There was never a doubt in my mind whether we were going to win or not,” Wallace said. “I was disappointed in the media and everybody because they already had wrote us off before they gave us a chance. That actually made it a little more sweet for us.” Another student asked Wallace to recall his toughest game. The answer didn’t have anything to do with the Lakers, or his second trip to the Finals in 2005. It was his first high school varsity game in White Hall, Ala. “I was excited, I was nervous, I had my whole family there,” he said. “My brothers and sisters were encouraging me on one hand to do well but if I didn’t have a good game they would see me when I got home.”

Wallace spent a lot of time talking about family, revealing that “Big Ben” is actually the 10th of 11 children and has seven older brothers. His mother still cooks for him everyday. “Since I’m from the South, anything that’s home cooked, I’m down for,” he said. “She spoils me.”When asked his favorite subject besides physical education, Wallace said math. “Education is something that’s going to carry you throughout the rest of your life,” he said. “Basketball, eventually I’m going to have to retire one day. Players are going to come in and take my job. But education, I’ll always have my education.” Wallace’s candor surprised even the Brookfield staff, including principal Kelly Randazzo. “He’s a true role model to our students,” Randazzo said. “He works hard, he comes from humble beginnings, he appreciates what he has now, he appreciates the fans that he has, and he takes time out for them and we really appreciate that.” Though it’s not uncommon for him to take his son Bryce, 6, to school in the morning, Wallace understands what a rare opportunity this is for other children every time he walks into a classroom. He signed autographs for everyone in Neal and Riya’s class, leaving an autographed card behind for a sick classmate. “I know what it means to see the kids,” he said. “Ordinarily they probably only see you on TV. (This) gives them an opportunity to see that you’re real.”

It’s an opportunity Dr. Doshi probably didn’t think Neal and Riya would have after Wallace left the Pistons in 2006. Dr. Doshi flew back to Michigan to catch a game of the 2004 Finals while he completed his medical training at the University of Iowa. Now the director of allergy and immunology at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak, Dr. Doshi is a Pistons season-ticket holder. “A few minutes of his time is going to leave a lifelong impression on these kids, and to have that kind of opportunity I didn’t want to miss it,” said Dr. Doshi, camera in hand. “You can’t replicate that with anything.” Dr. Doshi got a kick out of learning what Wallace could bench press – 460 pounds at his peak – but was more thrilled with the message he had for the class. “No matter what profession we’re in we always try to be positive role models for kids and people like Ben Wallace have the unique opportunity of capturing these children’s attention in ways we could only dream of doing,” Dr. Doshi said. “For him to be such a positive impact and to give them some sort of inspiration, telling them to stay in school, it’s amazing.”

Win Jason Maxiell's '89 Camaro!
Jason Maxiell and the Detroit Pistons announced today that he is teaming up with the Pistons Care Telethon and Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) to host a raffle event in which one lucky fan will win his classic 1989 Chevrolet Camaro. Proceeds from the raffle will support the FBCM. From March 16 through April 7, raffle tickets will be sold in increments of one ticket for $5, three tickets for $10 and 10 tickets for $20 for a chance to win Maxiell’s vintage car. Pistons fans can purchase raffle tickets and enter this contest by visiting the kiosk stand in front of Section 110 during any Pistons home game. The car will be displayed on the concourse of The Palace of Auburn Hills at all home games from March 16 through April 7 and photos can be viewed below. Maxiell will award the lucky contest winner with keys to his car during a special halftime ceremony on Fan Appreciation Night, April 12 vs. Toronto at The Palace of Auburn Hills (7:30 p.m.) and also present a check to FBCM. “I came up with this idea as a way to join forces with the Pistons Care Telethon and help those who need it most in our community,” said Maxiell. “I’m excited to get our fans involved in this great cause and I’m looking forward to presenting the winner with keys to my car.”

The 2010 Pistons Care Telethon, which culminated in a 17-hour telethon day and telecast of the team’s game on March 2, raised more than $405,546 in pledges to benefit the FBCM, with 100% of proceeds going to families and individuals in need of food throughout the state of Michigan. The pledge total will allow FBCM to provide over 2 million meals. Although the Telethon took place on March 2, a number of fund-raising efforts took place in the days and weeks prior when employees of Palace Sports & Entertainment (PS&E) began a variety of activities and reached out to friends, neighbors and clients to ask for donations and put together programs to raise funds. Detroit Pistons sponsors Fathead and Kellogg’s helped with major contributions to the cause, as did the team’s television partner FS Detroit and AT&T. Numerous television sponsors also chipped in by donating their spots during the telecast to share the message about Food Bank Council of Michigan and various sponsors contributed to the radio telecast on 97.1 The Ticket as well as in-arena throughout the March 2 game. Entertainers including Kid Rock, Jimmy Buffett, Bon Jovi, Jay Z and Sting all supported the event.

Area media has also stepped up to support the Pistons Care Telethon. Throughout the day on March 2, radio stations WCSX-FM, WRIF-FM, WMGC-FM, WWJ-AM, 89X-FM, CIDR-FM, 97.1 The Ticket, AMP Radio, WDVD-FM, WDMK-FM, WHTD-FM, WOMC-FM, WYCD-FM and WJR-AM broadcasted live from the venue. The WJBK-TV Fox 2 Morning Show aired show segments on-site. The Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Oakland Press, Metro Times and Real Detroit Weekly supported the event by donating space for promotional ads. Local TV stations including Fox Sports Detroit, Comcast Cable, WJBK-TV 2 and WXYZ-TV 7 aired public service announcements in available time slots. CBS Outdoor and Lamar Outdoor donated multiple billboards used to promote the Telethon.

'A Bright Future'
When Tayshaun Prince took a Jason Maxiell knee to his back early in Monday night’s loss at Boston, it cracked a door to playing time for rookies Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers. When Daye had a few rookie moments in a five-minute stint in the first half, John Kuester turned to Summers to start the second half. Summers responded with 12 points in almost 19 minutes of playing time, making 4 of 5 shots including both of his 3-point tries. He’s been seen the least of the Pistons’ three impressive rookies this season, but player development coach Steve Hetzel – who spends the bulk of his time working with the three rookies – sees a future for Summers just as bright as those of Daye and Jonas Jerebko. We looked at Jerebko and Daye through Hetzel’s eyes the past two days on Pistons.com. Here’s his take on Summers. DaJuan Summers – Pistons personnel director George David said one of the things that first struck him about Summers came at the end of Summers’ sophomore season at Georgetown when he was an instructor at the LeBron James Skills Camp. During the post-practice pickup games among camp counselors, Summers wound up matched up against James. It’s not that he played James to a standoff, necessarily, but that Summers looked physically comfortable with the challenge of guarding him. Hetzel, too, evokes James’ name when talking about Summers. “He’s going to be something,” were Hetzel’s first words when Summers’ name came up. “There are not many players built like DaJuan Summers. He’s 6-8. That’s LeBron size. I’m not saying he’s LeBron, but he has that size. Austin is 6-11, but DaJuan weighs 40 pounds more than Austin.”

While Summers has played the least of the three rookies, the 35th pick has had several nice moments at either end of the court. He battled Carmelo Anthony tough down the stretch of one of the Pistons’ best wins of the season at The Palace, forced Paul Pierce to give up the ball when Kuester went to him unexpectedly on a last-possession sequence when Boston recently came to town, and flashed his dynamic athleticism on a baseline drive and dunk in a game last week against Utah. “DaJuan is an explosive player,” Hetzel said. “He’s learning how to channel his body and his power the right way. The dunk against Utah was a perfect example. We’ve been telling him get to the rim, get to the rim, get to the rim. Two dribbles, he was there for a dunk. Once he understands that it’s either get to the paint for yourself or to make a play for somebody else, he’s going to flourish. There are few people with his skill set and his size.” Though the media isn’t allowed to attend Pistons practice, they are waved in once the formal session ends and Hetzel is often overseeing competitive one-on-one games involving the rookies, where Summers routinely holds his own – or better. He’s the most competitive of the three,” Hetzel said. “He’s got a fire in his belly. A lot of it has to do with watching his teammates lay in front of him. The problem is there just aren’t enough minutes. When you play a game, there are only so many spots on the floor and it’s just not his time yet. But I give him a ton of credit. It takes a lot internally to show up to work every day and work as hard as he does. He could pack it in, but he never has.” What Hetzel will attack over the off-season with Summers is ballhandling and post-up play. “We’re going to work on his pick and roll, his ability to handle the ball and make a play out of the pick and roll. He really does have a good back-to-the-basket game. So we’ll polish his post-up game. He shows me stuff they work on at Georgetown, an elite post player school.

He really does have a great hook shot – one dribble and get to his hook. “But I would like to see him have the ability to face people up - face ’em up, shoot ’em; face ’em up, one dribble and get to a turnaround jump shot. I want him to start using his body. It doesn’t necessarily have to explode through people as much as just a pace and a rhythm of getting to a spot on the floor where he knows he can score.” There’s been spirited speculation since the Pistons drafted all three last June which positions each was best suited to play, though the evolution of the NBA has rendered positional pigeon-holing less significant than it was a generation ago. Hetzel acknowledged as much, and said he believes all three are versatile enough that they can play together. But, he says, all three are probably best suited to play the same position. “I’d say all three of them are ideally a three, a small forward. Austin could play the two, but he’s so tall. I’m not sure any of the three have the true size to be a full-time four, but they can all be effective at that position. DaJuan might just be too big for a two guard. I think just fits naturally at a three, but the two and three have become basically the same position in most offenses. “But that’s OK. They can play together. One of the things you can do is cross-match and switch pick and rolls, once they get good at it. The ideal way to play the pick and roll is if you have the size to switch it, because then there’s no advantage. A lot of times, you’ll see us try to show on a pick and roll to affect it where the big jumps out and has to get back because you don’t want the guard switching. But all three of these guys have the ability to guard a small forward and even the athleticism, if they switch, to get around the big so they can’t post them. “There’s a lot of things we’re excited about because of what we’re going to be able to do with them. We have such a bright future with those three kids.”

Putting a sunshine twist on this miserable season
So, DaJuan Summers played well last night. But other than that, it was more of the same for the Pistons – Tayshaun Prince got hurt and Detroit suffered an embarrassing defeat. The Pistons are probably in store for suffering against Cleveland tonight, too.

And it’s really a shame. Spring is here. The sun is shining. It’s warm. There are so many reasons to be in a good mood. Except the Pistons. So, I dug up some old posts from this season about the good times. Yes, they were scarce. But if you need a lift, check them out. And remember, it’s almost over.

A season-opening blowout of Memphis when everyone was healthy and played well together
A November win over Atlanta when Detroit showed heart, hustle and blood
Once upon a time, Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva carried the Pistons to a win over a playoff contender
A win over Orlando that made be believe this Piston team was better than last year’s (On paper, it still might be true.)
Despite their record, the Pistons have some players with talent and personality.
Chucky Atkins’ resurgence
An awesome music video about a player who will be my favorite Piston when Ben Wallace retires
Ben Wallace’s and Jonas Jerebko’s ridiculous underratedness
Jason Maxiell has fun
Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton return from the dead
And hey, the Pistons aren’t the Nets.

The Pistons vs The Cavaliers
The 23-44 Pistons are hosting the 52-15 Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at the Palace. One hopes that they will at least put up a fight after last night’s debacle against the Celtics.

If you didn’t look at the front page of NBA.com, you missed this headline and article.
Davidson’s death, rough economy lead to Pistons’ demise
A lot of truth there and pretty fitting after the Pistons performance last night.
Ben Wallace is still listed as day to day.
Rodney has no timetable on his return.
No conformation whether Tayshaun will play or not.
With Jonas Jerebko now starting at power forward, Kuester would have to go in another direction for Prince’s replacement – perhaps Austin Daye, who has a pair of starts already under his belt. Daye totaled 29 points and 11 rebounds in starts on Nov. 27 against the Clippers and Jan. 18 against the Knicks. He scored a career-high 16 points at New York. Via Ryan Pretzer at Pistons.com

Tip is at 7:30 pm EST and will be broadcast on FS Detroit with the radio broadcast over at 97.1 The Ticker or follow the action online over at NBA.com.

Tayshaun Prince just went through the walk-through, but he's still a game-time decision for tonight's game. Tip is 7:30, FS Detroit.

John Kuester says Rodney Stuckey could get medical clearance to go through practice Thursday. If so, he could play on Friday vs. Indiana.

Tayshaun Prince a game-time decision for Pistons against Cavaliers
Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester said Tayshaun Prince will be a "game-time decision" tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Prince left during the first quarter of the Pistons' loss to Boston on Monday after taking a knee to the back from teammate Jason Maxiell after Prince fell to the floor. Kuester said Prince participated in the team's walk-through today. He said if Prince is unable to play that Jonas Jerebko will move from power forward to small forward with Charlie Villanueva starting at the four spot.

Ben Wallace (right knee) and Rodney Stuckey (illness) remain out of the lineup, but Kuester said he is hopeful Stuckey will participate in practice Thursday.
