Kevin (Ann Arbor, Mich.): I keep hearing talks about frontcourt trades and free agents, but realistically how many available players aside from Boozer are better than Sheed or Dice? I’ve heard Tyson Chandler, but he’s not even close to the level of Sheed or Dice and he’s getting paid similar dollars. He averages 8.8 points and about eight of those are off lobs from Chris Paul. Another I’ve heard is Marion, which makes no sense.

Langlois: I think that’s selling Chandler a good deal short. If he’s healthy, he’s a guy similar to Ben Wallace in that his value isn’t going to be reflected by conventional statistics. He’s not going to score from the perimeter, but he’s a terrific rebounder (again, when he’s healthy, which he hasn’t been for much of this season) and such a looming defensive presence that he dissuades teams from attempting to probe the paint. Boozer’s the best of the bunch, unquestionably, but he’s got his own health issues. I agree that Marion doesn’t seem like a solution here. But when you ask how many – well, how many does it take? If the Pistons add Boozer to their frontcourt – a 27-year-old, 20-and-10 guy – aren’t they suddenly a much different and better team?

Yasir (Farmington, Mich.): What do you think about the Pistons drafting DeJuan Blair or Ty Lawson? Blair kind of reminds me of Jason Maxiell, small but plays big and tough. Lawson could be an excellent backup for Stuckey if the Pistons decide not to re-sign Bynum.

Langlois: The Pistons are pretty certain to exercise their option on Bynum for less than $1 million for next year, so I’m not sure they’d go for another shorter point guard like Lawson. Then again, if he’s the best value on the board in the late teens, where they figure to be drafting, I don’t think they’d pass on him. Blair is interesting. He’s more of a space eater than Maxiell and a little taller, but not as explosive. Can he create enough space inside in the NBA to be an effective interior scorer, like an Al Jefferson, or would he wind up getting his shot shoved back in his face all night? Tough call.

Andrew (Millington, Mich.): I think the Pistons should draft Goran Suton from Michigan State with their second-round pick. He’s 6-foot-10 and he gives you 10-plus rebounds a game and can shoot the ball from outside with accuracy. What do you think?

Langlois: I have reservations about Suton’s athleticism translating to the NBA, but let me qualify that by saying I saw Suton as a high school senior and thought Tom Izzo had really taken a long-shot gamble by offering him a scholarship. So I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s got skills and a nose for the ball. But I think Suton is destined for a career in Europe, where he should do pretty well.

Peter (Troy, Mich.): Like many fans, I’m disappointed with our slide from powerhouse to seventh seed, but we have a rare opportunity here. We will have a pick around No. 15, the spot where we got Stuckey. What do you think of Willie Warren and DeMar DeRozan?

Langlois: I think they’re both too long on potential to be around when the Pistons draft. DeRozan’s production hadn’t been there all season until the Pac-10 tournament, but he played really well there and carried it over into the NCAA. I think they’re both lottery picks and the Pistons would probably do cartwheels if either one was still on the board. But they’re also just freshmen and, while it seems likely they’ll come out if they’re hearing that they’ll be lottery picks, they might decide to stick around another season.

Ron (Lake Orion, Mich.): I was as disappointed as anyone with the calls during the Miami game, but isn’t that one of the reasons the Pistons got Iverson and why, if he’s healthy, he should be on the floor during the closing minutes of games from here on out. He will get the calls Stuckey is not getting at this point in his career.

Langlois: If Iverson comes back – and I think there’s a decent chance we’ll see him this weekend against either Washington or Philadelphia – and is in form, there’s a very strong likelihood he will be on the floor at the end of games. Michael Curry isn’t blowing smoke when he says the Pistons need Iverson to be the team they can become. I wonder, though, if Iverson still casts that kind of spell over the officials. He didn’t seem to be getting many calls for all his forays to the basket before getting hurt.

Jason (Kalamazoo, Mich.): I’ve heard a lot of trade rumors regarding Amir Johnson. Is there any merit to this and, if so, are there any destinations for him that can be speculated on?

Langlois: This is the slowest time of year for trade rumors, Jason – after the trade deadline and before the season ends. I haven’t heard Amir’s name in anything outside of the speculation that Phoenix wanted him and Rasheed Wallace for Amare Stoudemire. I think it’s possible he could be moved this summer because the Pistons, logically, are going to be targeting their frontcourt with their cap space. And if they land a big-time frontcourt player, and can bring back at least one of Antonio McDyess and Rasheed Wallace on top of that, then there’s a chance Joe D will address the need for another perimeter shooter by dangling Johnson or Jason Maxiell. Where that might be is anyone’s guess.

Brent (Oxford): Serious question: Is Jeff Van Gundy the most annoying NBA broadcaster of all time? I was almost more angry with him after the Miami game for his cop-out explanation of the Wade no-call than I was with the no-call itself. People ultimately respect someone when he admits what he has said or done is wrong. Van Gundy would be wise to learn this lesson.

Langlois: I got a ton of e-mails like yours, Brent, upset with Van Gundy for his commentary during the Pistons-Heat game, particularly for criticizing Michael Curry for having Walter Herrmann on the floor – right before Herrmann hit the triple to put the Pistons ahead in the final minute. Van Gundy is a lightning rod. A lot of people around the NBA admire his coaching ability, and a lot regard him as arrogant and self-serving.

A. Sherrod Blakely on WGHN: 'Will Bynum's played better' than Allen Iverson in Detroit
Since seeing an increase in playing time due to injuries, Will Bynum is earning a legitimate shot at consistent minutes from Detroit Pistons coach Michael Curry.

In the last six games, the fourth-year guard has averaged 15 points on 50 percent shooting. Bynum has added nearly five assists to just two turnovers per game, over the same period."I think it's going to be really interesting (to see) how Michael Curry deals with Will Bynum once Allen Iverson is back in the mix," Blakely tells Ryan Terpstra on WGHN-AM. "That's the guy who Bynum's essentially playing minutes for. "And as great a scorer as Allen's been throughout his career, bottom line, if you look at the body of work for this season, in Detroit, Will Bynum's played better. And Will Bynum, if you're basing it on how he's performed, Will Bynum should get some minutes even when Allen returns."

And again, that's going to be very much a challenge for Michael Curry to deal with, with trying to get Allen up to speed but at the same time, trying to keep Will in the mix because Will has been playing well enough and deserves the right to be out there. Listen to the entire interview to hear who Blakely thinks the Pistons are missing the most between Iverson, Rasheed Wallace and Rip Hamilton:

A.I., Rip, 'Sheed out tonight, but latter two could return this weekend
In a bit of good news for the Pistons, Coach Michael Curry said there was a shot that Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace could return this weekend.

He didn't specify which game or who was closer to returning, but the Pistons are at Washington on Saturday and are back at home Sunday against Philadelphia. Hamilton, who will have missed six games in a row with a sore left groin after tonight's home game against the Lakers, was on the court this morning after the team's shootaround along with Wallace and strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander.

Wallace will have missed nine consecutive games with a sore left calf. Allen Iverson, who will have missed 15 games, has returned to the court, but Curry said he is farther from a return to the lineup.

Q: Why has Rasheed Wallace gone from wearing number 30 (his first season here) to number 36, and is now back to 30? And why does Kwame Brown wear number 38, a highly unusual number in the NBA?

A: Wallace doesn’t like to go into details about his number switches. They are thought to hold some sort of significance to him, perhaps to honor a family member. But he will admit that he likes No. 30 because one of his favorite players, Philadelphia product Billy Owens, wore it. As for Brown, he told beat writer Vince Ellis that the No. 38 has no real significance. His first two choices were No. 54 (Jason Maxiell’s number) and No. 5 (Walter Herrmann’s number). With those out of the picture, the Pistons offered five or six other choices, including No. 38. He is the first Pistons to wear the number.

Video: Behind the Scenes - Heat at Pistons
There’s nothing like writing and reporting on an NBA game… but to be able to bring that text to life with video is even better!

Game Notes may be the coldest game reviews on the ‘Net, but if you could really see what we see behind-the-scenes wouldn’t that be magical? This is why I wanted to enhance SLAMonline and show the editing skills that I’ve learning at my internship this semester.

Take a trip with me to last Sunday’s game when the Detroit Pistons hosted the Miami Heat. Make sure you watch the end when I became the first to do something for Dwyane Wade…

Lakers-Pistons Preview
Armed with a big lead early in their last game, the Los Angeles Lakers emptied their bench and put their depth on display. The injury-depleted Detroit Pistons haven't had many chances to do that lately. The Lakers look to take advantage of the Pistons' ongoing injury woes and win at The Palace for the first time in more than seven years Thursday night. Los Angeles (56-14) has the best record in the Western Conference, due largely to an MVP-caliber season from Kobe Bryant and the consistent contributions of fellow All-Star Pau Gasol. The Lakers, though, also boast solid role players throughout their lineup, as evidenced by the balanced production they got in Tuesday night's 107-89 win at Oklahoma City -- their sixth in seven games. Bryant and Gasol helped build a 17-point lead after one quarter and six Lakers scored in double figures as the team used all 12 active players.

Josh Powell had 14 points and Luke Walton added 11 to lead the reserves, who have helped ease the burden on the team's star players as the postseason approaches. "I just think towards the end of the season we have to take each one of these games and start thinking about the playoffs and gearing ourselves towards that," Powell said. "Every game is important, and we're just trying to do what we can do to sustain the effort." The Lakers' depth could be particularly valuable against the struggling Pistons (34-36), who have lost five of six while dealing with injuries to three of their starters. Allen Iverson is sidelined indefinitely with a sore back that has kept him out of 14 straight games, Richard Hamilton has a nagging groin injury that's forced him out of the last five and Rasheed Wallace has sat out eight in a row with a strained left calf. Iverson isn't expected back soon, and the statuses of Hamilton and Wallace for Thursday's game are uncertain.

Without all three players Tuesday night, Tayshaun Prince and Will Bynum scored 20 points apiece, but Detroit couldn't keep up with Chicago in the second half of a 99-91 road loss. "We really need those guys back," said Prince, averaging 18.7 points but shooting 43.1 percent over his last nine games. "But at the same time, while they're not here, we've got to figure out a way in the situation we have. We almost have to play perfect basketball to come out with a win." Detroit is 13-25 since a season-high seven-game winning streak from Dec. 23-Jan. 4. "We need to stay the course and try to control what we can control," coach Michael Curry said. The Pistons have controlled their home court against the Lakers lately, winning nine straight meetings at The Palace since a 121-92 loss Jan. 8, 2002. That streak that includes three victories during the 2004 finals, won by the Pistons in five games. Bryant has played in eight of those losses in Detroit, averaging 23.9 points but shooting 37.7 percent from the field. Bryant had 29 points but shot 12-for-30 in the Lakers' first meeting with the Pistons this season Nov. 14. Wallace and Iverson scored 25 apiece and Prince added 18 as Detroit won 106-95 in Los Angeles.

Jazz Assigns Koufos to D-League, Recalls Fesenko
Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor announced today that the team has assigned rookie center Kosta Koufos to the Utah Flash of the NBA Development League (D-League) and recalled second-year center Kyrylo Fesenko. Guard Morris Almond is also currently on assignment with the Flash. Per league rules, NBA teams are only permitted to have two players on D-League assignment at any given time. Koufos is expected to be in uniform when the Flash host Anaheim on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m.

In 48 games this season (seven starts) the 7-1, 265 pound Koufos has averages of 4.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists. Koufos has been inactive 13 times this season and DNP-CD 10 times. Koufos last appeared in a game on February 17 against Memphis, scoring two points and grabbing one rebound in a 117-99 home win. The center notched his career-high when he scored 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 97-88 win over Dallas on December 2 in Salt Lake City.

Selected by the Jazz out of Ohio State in the first round (23rd overall selection) of the 2008 NBA Draft, Koufos averaged 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists in his only season with the Buckeyes. The Canton, Ohio native was also named the postseason NIT MVP after leading Ohio State to the 2008 title. Koufos, who holds dual American and Greek citizenship helped lead Greece to a silver medal in the 2007 UMCOR U18 European Championships after averaging 26.5 points, 13 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots.

Season Over
This entire season has been comprised of one excuse after another as to why this team has not performed up to expectations. The players need time to adjust..we have time to get it together..we can get it done with the players we have..AI disrupts the offense with his style of play...new coach..lineup changes..key injuries. The list goes on and on. The fact of the matter is that when the Pistons dropped Chauncey's big contract the organization started planning for the future and this season lost it's importance. As other Eastern Conference teams were acquiring players to make them better the Piston's were satisfied with acquiring Allen Iverson while failing to address blatant deficiencies regarding the bench or the possibilities of injuries to starting players. The Pistons are not the only team with injury problems. Many of the teams in the NBA have had their share of serious injuries to major players and yet teams seem to continue winning because they actually had players on the bench who were capable of contributing. The Pistons bench is an assortment of second rate players who are more suitable for the D league than the NBA.It has been the Pistons Achilles heal all season long.Coming into the season it was apparent that the second team did not have a true scorer or adequate post presence or someone who could consistently rebound the basketball.Along with that the Pistons defense was horrible in the paint. This entire season has been painful to watch from a fan perspective and it just goes to show what can happen when an organization sacrifices the present for an uncertain future. This entire team needs a makeover and I am sure that in order for this team to regain its competitive form will require a gutting of the present team as we know it.

Ohio State's Mullens jumping to NBA
B.J. Mullens is the latest "one and done" at Ohio State. The 7-foot freshman announced Thursday he would declare himself available for the NBA draft, the fifth Buckeyes player in the last three seasons to leave after playing one year.

The Columbus-area native averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds, and shot 64 percent from the field to set a school freshman record. He started two of the 33 games this past season for the Buckeyes, who lost to Siena in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Coach Thad Matta, who has had to basically rebuild the program each of the last three seasons, said he was disappointed that Mullens was leaving early. "I am saddened to lose B.J.," Matta said. "On one hand, I feel another year in school would have allowed him to develop into the player I know he can be and an additional season would have been beneficial to him both personally and monetarily in the long run. On the other hand, I am empathetic to the reasons why he has chosen to leave at such an early point in his career."

Calathes, who finished with 10 points and seven assists in the 71-62 loss to Penn State, has deflected questions all season about possibly leaving Florida early for the NBA Draft. That hasn’t stopped some from talking about his readiness for the league. “I don’t even think it’s about (being ready) any more,” Gator coach Billy Donovan said. “I think the one thing that people don’t understand about the NBA is it’s a league of investments, and you’re making an investment. A lot of times you are making a long-term investment and you are hoping that your investment gets better and better and better.”

NBA executives can’t comment officially on Calathes’ prospects, because league rules prohibit talk on underclassmen, but most agree on his long-term potential off of the record.“There were concerns at the end of last season about his athletic ability and his ability to finish around the basket,” a Western Conference executive said. “He’s actually improved getting in the lane and making shots. I still think teams are concerned about his athleticism, but at the same time, I don’t know how much his stock will rise if he stays for another year or two. It’s going to come down to him having to decide how much he has to gain by coming back.”

ESPN draft analyst Chad Ford, the network’s basketball version of NFL draft guru Mel Kiper, has Calathes listed as No. 37 in his list of top-100 draft prospects. He currently lists him as a late first- or early second-round pick. “I’m not really thinking about (the draft) right now,” Calathes said. “When it’s time, I’ll sit down with coach (Donovan) and my family and decide from there. I’m not really thinking about that at all after the loss.”

Pistons-Lakers Game Thread
7:30 pm ET
Los Angeles: 56-14 (25-9 road)
Margin: +7.9 ppg (+6.4 last 25%)
Last 10:8-2
Pistons: 34-36 (18-18 home)
Margin: -0.5 (-0.4 last 25%)
Last 10:3-7

Oppo research: I had a more detailed analysis, but unfortunately I was using Internet Explorer, which doesn’t play nice with ESPN.com (or with anything else for that matter). Serves me right for using it. But what more could I tell you about the Lakers? Here’s the short scoop. Without Andrew Bynum, they aren’t winning a championship, but Kobe and Pau are still enough to make any team good. The Pistons have had success against them recently, but not by virtue of giving Will Bynum 34 minutes.
The Drama: TNT is showing Miami-Chicago? That can’t be what the league had in mind when they scheduled this for a Thursday night.

Keys for Detroit: Harass Gasol: He’s been hobbled, and the Pistons limited him to 11 shots last time around. Not sure Phil Jackson is going to want to give him 40 minutes tonight, especially if the going gets rough.
Rest ‘Dyess: I’ve been loving the output of late, and I know we are in a playoff race, but the whole point of making the playoffs is to do something once you are there.
Speed it up: Still with the plodding offensive schemes? Even with Will Bynum getting 30 mpg? Seriously?
Question of the Game: Will this get ugly? The Pistons didn’t look too good against the Bulls, and the Lakers are, um, not the Bulls.

Rose ready to play tonight; Del Negro cautious
After a couple of days of rest and treatment on his bruised right wrist, rookie Derrick Rose said following the Bulls' morning shootaround that he will play tonight against the Miami Heat at the United Center. "I'm feeling better and I'm definitely playing," Rose said.

Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro took a more cautious approach. "We'll see how Derrick feels before the game and then we'll make a decision," Del Negro said.

Lakers @ Pistons
The Pistons (34-36, 18-18 home) will be hosting the Los Angeles Lakers (56-14) Tip off is 7:30 pm est from the Palace of Auburn Hills. The game will be televised locally on Fox Sport Detroit and a “Match-up Cam” version on Fox Sports Plus
Lakers’ Snapshot
Road record: 25-9
Last game: 3/24 (Tues) W 107-89 @ Thunder
Vs. East: 18-7
Last 10: 8-2
Streak: Won 3
Vs. Pistons: Nov 14th: PISTONS (106) @ Lakers (95)
Injuries: Andrew Bynum (knee - out)

It’s got to be a funny feeling for guys like Tayshaun Prince and Antonio McDyess. They’re used to being in the position that the Lakers have achieved. The Lakers have clinched their playoff spot and are looking to stay healthy and sharp. Meanwhile the Pistons are fighting for their playoff existence with a slim lead over the Bulls for the 7th seed.

The Pistons will again be without Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and of course Allen Iverson.

Still no Rip, 'Sheed or AI
It's what they've been saying for a few days, and was confirmed a few minutes ago by Pistons coach Michael Curry -- Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson will not play tonight. Curry said that he expects Hamilton back Saturday and possibly Wallace, and they hope to have Iverson back early next week some time.
