Michael Jordan, John Stockton and David Robinson are among 16 finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

NBA coaches Don Nelson and Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women's coach C. Vivian Stringer also made the cut on Friday from a field of 164 nominees, as did former NBA stars Dennis Johnson, Chris Mullin and Bernard King and two-time WNBA MVP Cynthia Cooper. "I'll step out on a limb and speak for all of them and say thank you," said Robinson, the former San Antonio stalwart and lone finalist who attended the announcement during NBA All-Star Game festivities. "We understand the honor that goes along with being nominated. We know everyone doesn't get in."

The election announcement will be on April 6 at the NCAA Final Four in Detroit, with enshrinement in September at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Smith, Afflalo, Laimbeer vow to 'make the 'D' proud' in Phoenix
Team Detroit leader Katie Smith had a few choice words for the other teams competing in Saturday's Shooting Stars competition during NBA All-Star Weekend. "We're going to make the 'D' proud," the star Shock guard just said as part of the All-Star festivities.

The competition is a shooting contest between teams comprised of a current NBA player, a WNBA baller and a former NBA player. I really don't have time to explain the rules, but it has become an All-Star staple in recent years.

It turns out Smith is confident in one teammate: Pistons guard Arron Afflalo. She's a little worried about Shock coach and former Pistons Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer, and with good reason."I'm old and I can't shoot," Laimbeer said. "I'm 50 years old now. I've lost my eyesight." Maybe Team San Antonio, Team L.A. and Team Phoenix don't have to worry about the "D" after all.

The Answer: Yes: Coming to the Pistons might have caused Allen Iverson’s statistics to drop, but not his popularity. Iverson was selected to play in his 10th straight All-Star game on Thursday when fan voting determining the starters in each conference was revealed. Iverson drew 1,804,649 to finish behind Miami’s Dwyane Wade among Eastern Conference guards and easily outdistance the third-place finisher, New Jersey’s Vince Carter (1,239,613). The other East starters will be Cleveland’s LeBron James, Boston’s Kevin Garnett and Orlando’s Dwight Howard, who led all vote-getters with 3,150,181. “It’s always an honor to be named an All-Star and it’s a blessing to be in this league,” Iverson said. “Being named an All-Star starter makes it that much more special. The fact that the fans have voted me onto the team makes this a great honor and it’s truly appreciated.”

Iverson, acquired by the Pistons on Nov. 3 in a trade for Chauncey Billups, has averaged 17.8 points in 37 games for Detroit, almost 10 off of his career average of 27.7. But he’s taking less than 15 shots a game, about eight under his career average, and has said repeatedly that he’s playing with more talented teammates than he ever has and is focused on winning a championship, not chasing individual honors. Except for his first two seasons, Iverson has been voted to the All-Star game every season in which one has been held since. There was no All-Star game in 1998-99, the year of the lockout that shortened the season to 50 games, and Iverson couldn’t play in the 2006-07 game because of a sprained ankle

Iverson has twice been MVP of the All-Star game, in 2001 when he scored 25 points and had five assists and again in 2005 when he had 35 points and seven assists. In eight previous games, he’s averaging 16.0 points and 6.6 assists. In his first All-Star game, he scored 26 points and had nine assists. Starters for the West are reigning MVP Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans’ Chris Paul at guard, San Antonio’s Tim Duncan and Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix at forward, and Yao Ming of Houston at center.

http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/truebluepistons.html

Can’t close the book on trade until summer: The best general managers in sports – doesn’t matter the sport – are ones who detach themselves emotionally and live by the axiom that it’s better to move an aging star player one year too early than one year too late. Joe Dumars didn’t use anything like those words when I sat down with him Thursday for a three-part interview we’re posting in both text and audio versions on Pistons.com – Part I is up now and parts II and III will go up before the Pistons get back to basketball following the All-Star break – but that’s the drift of what he was saying when I asked him a question about his willingness to make another trade this season on the heels of having made the Chauncey Billups-Allen Iverson deal in November. I don’t expect the Pistons to make another significant trade, for the record, though Joe D didn’t tip his hand one way or the other on that except to say, “without calling out any names,” he would be reluctant to make a deal for a “difference-maker” who might only be with the Pistons for a year. That would make a deal for Amare Stoudemire, who can opt out of his contract after the 2009-10 season, a reach. But he said the fact he made the huge Billups-Iverson deal really has no effect on his willingness to make another – except for how it might affect his ability to maneuver in the off-season.

And here’s what I found intriguing. It wasn’t that he was saying Billups was pushing the age envelope – to be sure, he’s a year younger than Iverson – but that the Pistons had pretty much used up the life expectancy of their core as it was constituted: “I would say that what’s not lost on me,” Dumars said, “is feeling like what we’ve done in previous years – how we did it, the personnel we did it with – had run its course. We could squeeze out 50 wins and try to get back deep in the playoffs – or you could start the transition process now.” So trading one from among that core now, while he still had All-Star games fresh on his resume, brings the greatest possible return. In today’s NBA, you have to assess a trade from a more encompassing perspective than merely the personnel involved. It’s also about the contractual implications. So the Pistons didn’t trade Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson. They traded Chauncey Billups (and Cheikh Samb and, temporarily, Antonio McDyess) for Allen Iverson AND whatever player they’re going to get next summer with the cap space that the trade creates. So that transition process Dumars talked about, as he went on to say, is really two-fold: Yes, it’s about accelerating the process of making Rodney Stuckey the point guard and leader of the team going forward, but it was also about creating tremendous cap space – more than any team in the NBA other than Oklahoma City at season’s end – that will open up possibilities that really haven’t been much discussed. What has been discussed is free agency, but Dumars’ options won’t be limited to free agency. Cap space means the Pistons could make a trade for a very good player without having to give up equal value in return. Remember last summer, when the Denver Nuggets essentially gave away Marcus Camby, one of the league’s best defensive and rebounding big men, for economic reasons?

So Pistons fans are right to be disappointed that the trade hasn’t yielded a better record at the All-Star break than 27-24. Joe D is disappointed about that, too. But the book isn’t closed on this year’s team until we see what it can muster in the playoffs – and the book doesn’t close on the trade until we see how Joe D converts the cap bounty coming his way. Given the way the economy has soured since last summer, there figure to be many teams looking to make salary dumps similar to the Camby deal after July 1. The Pistons will be positioned to take advantage of their misfortune, should Dumars find something he likes in that vein. Teams with cap space also find themselves used by trade partners who need help making a match work. A third team with cap space can facilitate the trade – and keep a little juice for themselves. So for Dumars to give that up now by trading one of his big expiring contracts, it would have to bring back not just a great player, but a great player who he knew would be part of his core for the foreseeable future. And that’s not very likely. But you won’t have long to wait to see the unveiling of the pieces to the puzzle we can’t yet see that will complete the big trade of last November that started the Pistons on their transition. About five months from now, the Pistons could look significantly different than they do today.

Raptors trade O'Neal to Heat for Marion
Shawn Marion has been traded from the Miami Heat to the Toronto Raptors for Jermaine O'Neal. As part of the deal, Marcus Banks goes to Toronto and Jamario Moon to Miami. The Heat also get a conditional draft pick, cash considerations, or both.

The trade was confirmed by a person familiar with the terms. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the NBA had yet to sign off on the deal.

The trade was first reported by ESPN. The deal had been discussed for weeks and came before Wednesday's deadline. Marion's most memorable play with the Heat turned out to be his last. Hours earlier, his last-second dunk lifted Miami past the Chicago Bulls.

The Toronto Raptors have confirmed that they have traded centre Jermaine O'Neal to the Miami Heat for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. The team is expected to announce the trade formally later today, with Raptors president Bryan Colangelo expected to participate on conference call this afternoon.

The trade will give the Raptors plenty of financial flexibility this summer, when Marion's $17.8-million (all currency U.S.) contract comes off the books, along with the promise of much-needed defence and rebounding at the small forward position.

Marion, who could be in uniform for the Raptors when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, arrives in Toronto on the heels of one of his best games with the Heat.

I was just told by a rock-solid league source that Miami's Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks are headed to Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal, Jamario Moon and a future first-round pick. The Kings had discussed a Marion deal for some time, with the one apparent holdup that they didn't want to take back Banks. Now to be clear, there was also always a sense that the Heat had the Kings on the backburner while hoping to do something bigger than Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas. - Sam Amick

A party involved in the deal confirmed today that the Heat has finalized the long-rumored deal that will send Marion and seldom-used backup point guard Marcus Banks to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for center Jermaine O'Neal and forward Jamario Moon.

In addition, the Heat also will receive a future first-round pick from the Raptors.

Trade targets for the Pistons : With the Feb. 19 trade deadline looming, rumors are running rampant through the NBA. Some of those rumors involve the Detroit Pistons, and include All-Star caliber players such as Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire. But let's be honest, the chances of Pistons landing a marquee player along the lines of Bosh or Stoudemire is remote. Especially when you consider what other teams are willing to offer. The best course of action for Joe Dumars would be to shore up the Pistons two most glaring weaknesses this season - defense and depth. When the Pistons marched their way to a NBA Championship in 2004, they were the best defensive team in the league.

Anchored by Ben Wallace, opponents were held to 84.3 points per game. But let's be honest, the chances of Pistons landing a marquee player along the lines of Bosh or Stoudemire is remote. When the Pistons marched their way to a NBA Championship in 2004, they were the best defensive team in the league. Anchored by Ben Wallace, opponents were held to 84.3 points per game. The bench was nearly as solid as the Pistons vaunted D. Coming off the pine was a mix of proven vetrans and young up-and-comers, including Corliss Williamson, Mehmet Okur, Mike James, Lindsay Hunter and Chucky Atkins.

Dumars should use the 2003-04 championship season as a template for any moves he makes prior to the trading deadline. Instead of trading for a superstar, or creating more cap space, he should try to strengthen his team's defense and depth. With those two goals in mind, here are ten players who are on the block that the Pistons should try to acquire:
Mike Miller of the Minnesota Timberwolves
John Salmons of the Sacramento Kings
Brad Miller of the Sacramento Kings
Marcus Williams of the Golden State Warriors
Shaquille O'Neal of the Phoenix Suns
Jerry Stackhouse of the Dallas Mavericks
Marquis Daniels of the Indiana Pacers
Linas Kleiza of the Denver Nuggets
Chris Wilcox of the Oklahoma City Thunder
Marcus Camby of the Los Angeles Clippers

Laimbeer: ‘I’m old and blind’
Lambs still the cerebral player: “I’m old and I can’t shoot,” Laimbeer said. “I’m 50 years old now. I’ve lost my eyesight.” - Freep

In regards to the Haier Shooting Stars competition he’ll take part in tomorrow along with Arron Afflalo and the Shock’s Katie Smith.

[/quote[He’ll do just fine. Maybe a slightly less form-fitting jersey, but other than that he’ll do just fine. Go Team Detroit! On a side note, it’s been suggested that Lambs should replace the Pistons current head coach. I’d take a old, bad shooting, blind, comatosed, quardruple amputeed Laimbeer over a certain someone (read: Michael Edward Curry).

Moving up in the big man sweepstakes?: Miami has everything a free agent could want. No income tax, warm weather, spot duty as a volunteer police officer… Well, we can all stop talking about all that for at least another year. The announcement that the Heat and Raptors have agreed to a swap of Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks for Jermaine O’Neal and Jamario Moon means they have taken themselves out of the 2009 free agency hunt.

This positions the Pistons as the front-runners in the Carlos Boozer sweepstakes. With Miami out of the running, the Pistons now share a level playing field with other potential suitors in terms of geography and finance. More importantly, Detroit is the only city where Boozer could reasonably expect to compete for a championship. Further, this elevates the Pistons in the hunt for Amare Stoudemire. Though league sources indicate Joe D. is not interested, perhaps the removal of Toronto and Miami as potential trade partners will serve to sufficiently lower the asking price.

Toronto’s motives are somewhat more difficult to discern. Marion is probably a better fit than O’Neal, but I am less convinced that he will be more productive. Is this a last act of desperation in an effort to keep Chris Bosh happy, or a white flag of surrender for the Calderon-Bosh era? The answer to that question will have a ripple effect throughout the league. I have maintained that Joe would do well to consider foregoing cap space bingo, and making a move prior to the summer of 2010. The added uncertainty created by this trade only reinforces this conviction.

In the 16th paragraph of Peter Vecsey's column in today's New York Post, we get the first report that Suns coach Terry Porter has been fired and will be replaced on the bench by Suns General Manager Steve Kerr.

The rumor of Porter's firing has been floating around the since the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night at Cleveland, ending this miserable 6-10 stretch. Then nothing happened when the team returned in the wee hours Thursday morning.

Some will say that it's done and the Suns just don't want to drop the bomb while All-Star weekend is in their town. Maybe. But the same theory has been said for an Amare Stoudemire trade being done, even though indications are that no offer has knocked their socks off (as if Portland would really offer LaMarcus Aldridge, Jerryd Bayless and that money-sweet Raef LaFrentz contract).

The Miami Heat has agreed to trade forward Shawn Marion and point guard Marcus Banks to Toronto for center Jermaine O'Neal and small forward Jamario Moon, an agent for one of the players said Friday.

The deal is pending league approval and is expected to be announced Friday. ''The Heat gave us a heads-up that the deal is going down,'' said Michael Higgins, Banks' agent.

Also, the Heat will receive a lottery-protected first-round draft choice from Toronto as early as 2010.

They likewise had Ray Allen ignoring a hyperextended thumb -- and the team's suggestions that he at least cover it up with something -- to manufacture 20 points in 35 minutes, when it wouldn't have surprised anyone if he hadn't played.

Next, in all likelihood, as Sarver seeks financial relief, Amare Stoudemire will be traded before Thursday's deadline . . . for a voluptuous expiring contract, no doubt, and a promising youngster or two.

After learning he wouldn’t risk more serious injury, Ray Allen decided to play with a sprained right thumb last night against the Mavericks. The Celtics guard also said he will be good to go for Sunday’s All-Star Game in Phoenix.

“I saw the X-ray (Wednesday) night, so I wasn’t worried about it getting any worse,” Allen said. “It’s just a matter of dealing with whatever pain there is.”

Allen went through his traditional pregame session late yesterday, and after some initial discomfort, he decided he could go. “The first couple of times I caught the ball there was still a stinging pain, but then I just got used to it,” he said.

Rasheed to Spurs? Don't hold your breath: There seems to be a substantial amount of wind being blown these days, in cyberspace and on radio airwaves, about a possible Spurs trade for Rasheed Wallace. The rumor probably had its genesis with this ESPN.com column, in which Marc Stein reports "rumbles" that Wallace would have interest in joining the Spurs at some time. OK, well, that's fine and good. The part people seem to be missing in the Wallace-induced fervor is the next paragraph Stein writes, the one that begins "Don't see a real trade possibility here." That's the money paragraph. Because there isn't a real trade possibility here.

Wallace makes nearly $14 million, and Detroit GM Joe Dumars appears intent on accepting only expiring contracts in any deal for any player. Dumars also reportedly hasn't given up hope in joining the Amare Stoudemire sweepstakes, of which Wallace would be a required part. Put together, these factors would make it very, very difficult for the Spurs to do the math neccesary to nab Wallace. The Spurs have only two players with expiring contracts -- Jacque Vaughn ($1.2 million) and Ime Udoka ($1.08 million). That's a long, long way off from the $14 million they'd need to clear from their payroll to make a deal for Wallace legal. As far as hurdles go, it's the Great Wall of China. We're not saying it's impossible. Just highly improbable.

With a dearth of expiring contracts -- the golden chips in these salary-dump deals -- the Spurs are likely facing a quiet trading season. It is well-known that they would like to add another big man, but it also well-known they probably don't have the pieces to land anyone of consequence. A sign-and-trade with Robert Horry could open more doors, but as of last night, Horry hadn't heard word one from the Spurs. So if, you're holding your breath waiting for Wallace to don silver and black, you're likely to be blue until July at the earliest. Wallace will be a free agent then, and if he were willing to work for substantially less than $14 million, the Spurs would surely listen.
