As long as you have Rip, I don't see the bargaining power but I understand Dumars POV. It's a lotto pick and a likely high one at that.

The bargaining power has nothing to do with Rip. It has to do with New Jersey clearly being desperate to land Carmelo and sign him to an extension. If they need us to get the deal done, we should be getting a good deal, not a mediocre to terrible one.

At this point there is no reason at all to give up assets to dump Rip's contract. The Pistons are a bad team with a lot of bad contracts, not just Rip's, and the road back to contention is likely a long one. Giving up a first round pick is, again, just stupid.

klemen4 wrote:I tried to do a trade on this NJN-DEN-DET rumor and it is so hard to do anything without at least around 10+ players involved.

This is the trade:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... Id=2etwew4

Why so many players involved:

1) With Billups and Melo there are 30,2 mil going out so around 22+ mil must come in. Harris+Favors contract are only 13 mil so where to get additonal 9 mil?
- Vujacic is not possible because he can not be traded with a player
- Im sure Denver does not want Outlaw
- With Harris going to den and Lawson there also Farmar contract is not possible
- Morow 4 mil contract is the only one left
- From Det side only Wilcox 3 mil fits the bill, because Im sure DEN would not want Maxiel or Vallanueva and Prince from DET side is a no go.
-Still 2 mil short Ross and Graham must be included for this to work.

Now this is 6 incoming players to DEN. There roster stands at 14 - carmelo, billups is 12. So 3 more den player must be involved. Here there is an option for DEN to include Carter,Ely and Williams in a trade or to cut all 3 to make room for trade to go through. I think this 3 are the only possibility because the only other low contract is Forbes who they like and doubt would they cut.

From NJN side 7 players going out (Harris,Favors,Murphy, Petro,Morrow,Ross,Graham) and 6 coming in.

From DET side is simple, they send Hamilton to NJN and probably Wilcox to DEN taking in Murphy and Petro.

All the picks included are mystery of course.

Yes there are 14 players involved and I do not se a lot of other option fro this trade to be possible. Maybe 2-3 different small contract player going the other way around but that is it.

NJN team post this trade would be:

billups/farmar/carter/uzoh
hamilton/vujacic
anthony/outlaw/james
humphries/williams
lopez/ely

Seems weird that Denver would take Morrow, they already have Afflalo and JR Smith at SG. Why not include Humphries in the deal ? He's expiring and therefore could interest Denver more, or be bought out right away and come back to New Jersey after a month.

As for Petro, we really don't need him. His contract is bad considering what he actually brings to the court, which is usually nothing. Rip for Petro and Murphy wouldn't be an extraordinary deal, far from it. No way we throw our first in there too.

Who would than play pf for nets? There is no other option for the nets to get enough salary to DEN, Morrow must be included. Other option is deadline trade deal when also Vujacic can be included in a multiple player trade.

I wouldn't touch that deal even without the pick and i will explain why.

Rip is still a good player but is in a bad situation in Detroit. In NJ he would be back into a perfect situation playing between Billups and Melo and with a real head coach.

Dumping Rip won't help us at all. We still won't have any cap space. "Marbury" Rip or dump Rip would have absolutely the same effect.

Petro isn't a NBA player. He is horrible and i mean HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and he is owed 7 million. That's 100% dead cap space, a la Matt Carroll. I wouldn't touch that deal without a 1st coming my way.

Troy Murphy have value for being an expiring and that's it, he have been absolutely laughable as a player.

That deal is insulting for Detroit, the team wanting desperately the deal is NJN, they should remove Petro and send a 1st to Detroit and not the other way around. Period. If i am Joe D i lol and tell them to **** off and enjoy Melo going to the knicks.

Come on Vege

Moving Rip would be great for the team, Stuck could see more time at SG with TMAC running the point, Austin Daye would probably be in the consistent rotation, Gordon might get his act together w/out having to split time with Rip and Pistons would have more cap flexibility.

Doing that would make Rip untradeable far more so than he is now so that would be very stupid.

Yeah take on crap to move him and give up assets in the process would be very wise.

It happened before, players have been sent home, if Rip is so bad for the team, send him home instead of trade him for crap.

Pistons arent taking on anything since they actually would be SHEDDING salary and you said that you wouldt do the deal even without the pick which is outrageous.

Petro has 2 years remaining at $3.25 & $3.5 mil. That's not exactly cap crippling. It's less than what we paid Kwame Brown. It's basically Chris Wilcox part 2.

I don't want him, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Thats exactly how im looking at it cow. See theres two barrels here. Detroit is bent under RIP's contract, and the team sucks barrel, and NJ is bent over the "get a superstar here at any cost" barrel. THEY NEED a superstar to start off the Nets new move, and new image.

I guess i'm flipping here. NJ is bent under a bigger barrel, as they cant let Melo end up in NY, and I am willing to take Petro, but not that first round pick now. They can have a second, but what about us ending up with Denvers 1st, for ours in return? Joe picks better deeper into the draft anyway, right?

What if Detroit trades Tayshaun Prince or someone else for that matter to net a mid/lower-level 1st rounder to throw in a Hamilton package. The mid/lower-level pick could be used to work out a trade with NJ.

This is similar to the Tay/Rip deals, but this however requires DET to do more work to net the additional 1st rounder for Tay.

the kicker is what if getting melo guarantees paul? that's the only possible way i can see the nets going this overboard for one player. melo by himself is not worth what the nuggets are demanding or the nets are trying to give, but what if there is some under the table agent type deals going on here.

billups has an option next year and expires after next season and rip has a buyout clause which would give them the flexibility to go after paul. just a thought.

Read what i wrote properly. I never said i would do it, i said if people think Rip is such a cancer, marbury him instead of pay to unload him.

Indiana recently did that with TJ Ford and teams have done that before.
