NY says no. I don't see Williams swaying Melo into staying, if Melo leaves then you've traded an expiring contract for one of the worst contracts in the league with treadmilling as a best case scenario.
You might be right but I looked at it from the perspective of NY possibly being desperate to retain Melo and not really having to give up a core piece (not sure NY has a core) to get a 2nd banana. Plus they hate Felton in NY so they would be upgrading that area.
But again, this was BEFORE the surgery news, BEFORE I knew of Williams' trade kicker, and BEFORE we lost the pick. Now it's null and void in my eyes.

A lot has changed in a month.
I get the sense Phil isn't all that desperate to retain Melo. He's already gone public saying Melo should take a less than max deal to help a team build and Phil has a very nice contract so I doubt he's all that concerned about Dolan firing him. It wouldn't surprise me to see him willing to completely clear the deck and go after the upcoming Love/Durant/Irving type FAs.
I know, that's why I'm stressing that this line of thinking was from a month ago. I actually agree with you.
