Boozer's decision
A few months ago, Jazz forward Carlos Boozer was so convinced he would opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent that he proclaimed, "I'm opting out, no matter what. I'm going to get a raise regardless."

Less than 18 hours before Tuesday's deadline for players with early termination clauses or player options to notify teams of their intentions, there has been no word from Boozer's camp on whether he will choose to hit the unrestricted free-agent market at midnight Wednesday. One sticking point could be the part about Boozer believing he would "get a raise regardless." Due to make $12.7 million next season in the final year of his deal, Boozer may be stuck in the wrong free-agent class.

Only a handful of teams have enough cap space to sign a max player, the Pistons being chief among them. According to sources, the Pistons are expected to reach out to Boozer, Hedo Turkoglu, and Ben Gordon when the negotiating period begins. Oklahoma City and Memphis also are flush with cap room, but neither team is expected to make a big splash this summer. So does Boozer want to walk away from $12.7 million based on one team making it worth his while?

Millsap's camp, meanwhile, spent Monday in wait-and-see mode — and wishing they knew what sort of offers are coming. "But you can't really, because that's the nature of the business," said Millsap's representative and uncle, DeAngelo Simmons. "Because with the deadline, and not being allowed to talk to other teams yet, it's one of those things (you can't avoid)."

According to one NBA agent not representingy Millsap, however, Oklahoma City "will make Paul a big offer."

Also impacting Millsap's situation is Milwaukee's decision Monday to not make a qualifying offer to veteran Charlie Villaneuva, making him an unrestricted free agent rather than restricted. That adds one more unrestricted forward to this summer's market, which could affect restricted types such as Millsap and New York's David Lee. The biggest decision influencing Millsap's fate, however, is Boozer's.

Charlie Villanueva says he's done in Milwaukee. The Hawks are in the hunt, w/bunch of others, to try and land him. He's an ideal fit here.

* Pistons president Joe Dumars, ridiculed for trading Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson, is eager to begin reaping the rewards from that decision when the clock strikes midnight Wednesday. Armed with cap space from the expiring contracts of Iverson and Rasheed Wallace, the Pistons are widely expected to make a run at Hedo Turkoglu, Carlos Boozer or Paul Millsap, with Ben Gordon looking like a fallback option. Boozer must first decline his player option and become a free agent, Millsap is an unrestricted free agent, and any interest in Gordon is a sign that the Pistons have other plans for Rip Hamilton.

* The Spurs, fresh off their acquisition of Richard Jefferson, are said to be targeting either Rasheed Wallace or Antonio McDyess to play power forward alongside Tim Duncan. Cleveland also has both players on its wish list, according to sources.

Mehmet Okur follows Boozer's lead, declines free agency
Cross off another big man from the 2009 free agent market. Memo Okur has decided to forgo free agency this summer and play his last season of his contract out.

Center Mehmet Okur has decided to stay with the Utah Jazz for the final year of his contract.Okur joins teammates Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver, who also had the option of skipping the final year of their contracts and becoming free agents.

The fact that Okur and Boozer have decided to play out their contracts and become free agents in 2010 doesn't exclude them from moving to different teams. They can still be traded and Utah may have to trade one of them in order to keep Paul Millsap without paying so much in luxury taxes.

The Detroit News reported that if Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur decided to not opt out of their contracts that the Pistons would target Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Free agency starts at 12:00am Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Stay tuned...

Pistons turn into a 'junior college' for NBA coaches
Whoever the Detroit Pistons hire as their next head coach, three words of advice: "Rent, don't buy!"All the talk about building a franchise that can consistently compete at the highest level sounds good. But that's not going to happen until this franchise stops acting like a junior college for head coaches who get the boot after a year or two. President of basketball operations Joe Dumars' reasoning for firing Curry was legitimate. Players began to sour on Curry near the end of last season, and Curry didn't make the kind of strides needed to mend those relationships. The Pistons finished 39-43 and were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Coaching has as much to do with managing egos as it does managing a player's minutes. But there was a greater concern. There will be a lot of talk in the coming days about the strained relationships between Curry and key Pistons such as Richard Hamilton. But there was an even bigger concern that those same issues might be magnified with a revamped roster that should be bolstered via free agency, which begins today. If the Pistons sign Ben Gordon and keep Richard Hamilton, would both start? If not, who comes off the bench?

Curry faced a similar dilemma last season with Hamilton and Allen Iverson, and clearly made the wrong choice when he initially benched the team captain (Hamilton) for a player (Iverson) who was not playing nearly as well and seemed to do more harm than good to the team's first unit. He eventually reversed course, but the damage was done. Dumars once again finds himself picking up the pieces from a mess that he had a lot to do with creating. To Dumars' credit, Curry's failure was one of the few times when he hired a coach who didn't bring about as much or more success than his predecessor. Because of that, there's reason for Pistons fans to be optimistic that the next coach Dumars hires will be a good fit. And when you look at what Dumars has to offer for the next head coach, the job is very attractive.Detroit has a ton of salary cap space, a promising young talent in Rodney Stuckey to build around and a couple of veterans (Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince) with something left in the tank. There are plenty of coaches who would jump at the chance to be involved in something like that. But if there's something we've learned from previous coaches in Detroit, it's this: being a good coach in Detroit isn't good enough.

If you were to list the top 10 coaches in the NBA right now, three of the coaches Dumars has fired since 2003 -- Rick Carlisle, Larry Brown and Flip Saunders -- probably would make the cut. That brings us to his next hire, who likely will be announced any time now. Former Dallas coach Avery Johnson and ex-Pistons coach Doug Collins are the two front-runners. Cleveland assistant John Kuester, a former assistant in Detroit on the 2004 championship squad, also is in the mix, although he is considered a long shot. While there will be many who will push for former Piston and ex-Detroit Shock head coach Bill Laimbeer to get the job, the Pistons will be looking to bring in a more seasoned head coach. "It became clear to me that we would need a more experienced coach to help guide us through this period," Dumars said. Dumars hired Curry to replace a coach who had plenty of experience in Flip Saunders. And Saunders won at a regular-season clip unlike any previous Pistons coach. But he didn't get it done in the playoffs, the players began to turn on him and poof! -- he's out of here. Such is life in the NBA's junior college coaching factory, better known as the Detroit Pistons.

THE CANDIDATES
Doug Collins
Currently working as analyst for TNT. Collins coached the Pistons from 1995-1998 where he racked up a 121-88 regular season record, but never led the Pistons out of the first round of the playoffs. Collins last coached in the NBA with the Washington Wizards in 2003.

Avery Johnson
Currently working as an analyst for ESPN, Johnson coached the Dallas Mavericks from 2004-2008. In three-plus seasons with the Mavs, Johnson racked up a 194-70 regular-season record and coached Dallas to a 2006 NBA Finals appearance. He was fired after the Mavs failed to get out of the first round the next two seasons, including a stunning upset by No. 8 seed Golden State in 2007.

John Kuester
Long-time NBA assistant coach who has had stints with the Celtics, 76ers (twice), Pistons, Nets, Magic and Cavs. He served as an assistant to Larry Brown during the Pistons' 2004 championship season. Considered an offensive guru, Cleveland coach Mike Brown was quick to credit Kuester for the team's improvements on the offensive end last season.

Rockets may want McDyess
One of those is Antonio McDyess, the veteran Pistons center-forward whose off-season home is, ahem, Houston. Even at age 34, he is one of the NBA’s most consistent post players. He averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds last season, when he returned to the Pistons after being part of the Chauncey Billups-for-Allen Iverson deal, loyal to GM Joe Dumars to the bitter end.

Can the Rockets afford not to find out if McDyess would like to finish his career in his adopted hometown? With Yao out and Dikembe Mutombo finally retired, McDyess would play at least 30 minutes a night for the Rockets.

If the Rockets do reach out to McDyess, this could be bad news for the Spurs, also in the market for bigs after moving Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto to get Richard Jefferson last week.

Utah's Paul Milsap and New York's David Lee are highly coveted yet restricted free agents who will have several suitors, including Memphis and Oklahoma City. Reports already have Oklahoma preparing to offer Milsap a five-year, $65 million contract -- something similar to a deal Lee reportedly is seeking.

The Cavs have their midlevel exception, expected to be around $5.6 million to $5.8 million, to offer in the first year of a contract. Villanueva's qualifying offer would have been $4.6 million. His salary last season was $3.4 million. Several teams with more salary cap space, such as the Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder, might have interest in Villanueva, who averaged 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in 27 minutes per game for the Bucks.

Only a handful of teams can meet Turkoglu's assumed asking price, with the Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings and Oklahoma City Thunder having enough salary-cap room to be major players. The Portland Trail Blazers and Toronto Raptors have been seen as suitors for Turkoglu even though they have less cap space available than those clubs.

"I wouldn't say that the ball is in their court," Smith said, referring to Turkoglu's camp. "We'll see where Hedo is and what he wants to do."

Suns exercise option to keep Louis Amundson
The Phoenix Suns today exercised the second-year team option on the contract of forward Louis Amundson, the club has announced.

The 6-9, 238-pound Amundson became a fan favorite in his first season with the Suns in 2008-09 while posting career highs in nearly every statistical category. Voted the winner of the 2009 Majerle Hustle Award by fans and Suns staff for his signature style of play, Amundson saw action in a career-high 76 games, including the final 61 consecutive contests (Dec. 9-April 15) and all 31 contests under head coach Alvin Gentry.

The UNLV product averaged 4.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 13.7 minutes in 2008-09 and posted six double-digit scoring efforts after entering the season with a career-best of eight points. The third-year NBA performer enjoyed a career game on Feb. 27 vs. Toronto, exploding for a career-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and a career-best tying four blocks in recording his first career double-double and the first 20-10 game by a Suns reserve since the 2005-06 season.

Carlos Boozer stays with Jazz for 2009-10
Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer announced today that he is exercising his player option for 2009-10 and will be returning for his sixth season with the organization. “We are excited that Carlos has decided to remain with the Jazz,” said Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor. “We are hopeful he can continue to play at an All-Star level and will have an injury-free season.”

Boozer (6-9, 266, Duke), appeared in 37 games (all starts) for the Jazz in 2008-09, averaging 16.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 32 minutes per game. The seven-year NBA veteran had 20 double-doubles and 15 games of 20 or more points, leading the Jazz to the team’s third straight playoff appearance.

Originally signed by the Jazz as a free agent on July 14, 2004, Boozer has appeared in 276 regular season games with the Jazz over the past five seasons, averaging 19.2 points and 10.3 rebounds in 34 minutes per game. A two-time NBA All-Star (2007, 2008) Boozer was also selected to the 2008 All-NBA Third Team. The seven-year NBA veteran is a two-time member of the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Olympic Team, wining a gold medal in Athens in 2008 and bronze medal in Athens in 2004.

Corey Maggette has right wrist surgery
Golden State Warriors forward Corey Maggette underwent successful surgery on his right wrist yesterday (Monday, June 29), the team announced today.

The surgery, which was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Roy Meals of UCLA, will require minimal rehabilitation and Maggette will be able to resume normal basketball activities within 3-4 weeks. The purpose of the procedure was to relieve pain in Maggette’s right wrist, a condition that had bothered him intermittently throughout this past season.

Bobby Brown exercises option to stay with Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced that guard Bobby Brown has exercised the player option on his contract for the 2009-10 season.

After going undrafted out of Cal State Fullerton in 2008, Brown was signed as a free agent by the Sacramento Kings prior to the 2008-09 season. He was subsequently acquired by the Wolves along with Shelden Williams in exchange for Calvin Booth and Rashad McCants on Feb. 19, 2009. In 68 total games split between the Kings and Wolves during his rookie season, Brown averaged 5.3 points and 1.7 assists in 13.7 minutes per game.
