Rookie Jerebko No. 1 surprise, Dumars says
Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars didn't hesitate. When asked which player has surprised him the most during training camp, he quickly said: "Jonas Jerebko."

That's not surprising, because of the three draft picks (Jerebko, Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers), he's the one who seems to have carved a spot in the playing rotation (although he likely will miss Wednesday's opener at Memphis due to a one-game suspension). "The intangibles that he brings to the court," Dumars said Tuesday. "His endless effort ... his ability to run the court hard. "He makes winning basketball plays. That may not result in 20 points and 10 rebounds, but he makes winning basketball plays."

Jerebko has impressed with his ability to defend at a high level, but showed some offense in Thursday's 122-114 loss to the Timberwolves. The 6-foot-10 forward scored six points in 18 minutes. He had one basket on a running hook shot and another on a sweet scoop.

Heat's Big Cat now goes into hibernation
The Big Cat is about to go into hibernation. And don't think that doesn't claw at Jamaal Magloire.

Such is the penance for his scuffle with Detroit Pistons rookie Jonas Jerebko in the preseason opener. "It's tough, because I want to help this team win," Magloire said of his two-game suspension.

But, for the next week, Magloire has no choice but to sit on game nights, not even allowed in the arena. "I'm just going to be ready when I can play again," he said.

Kwame Brown (hand) should be ready for Pistons' regular season opener
Pistons center Kwame Brown sat out Friday night’s victory over the Milwaukee Bucks with a sore left hand, but Kuester said in a text Saturday that it was just a precaution.

In fact, Kuester added that the X ray on his hand turned out OK and Brown will be good to go when the season starts Wednesday at Memphis. Brown suffered the injury early in training camp and said this week it was getting progressively worse, but it appears that the remedy for now is rest as he missed Thursday night's loss to the Timberwolves as well.

Tayshaun Prince also rested his sprained big right toe Friday night, but he should be ready to go for the season opener next week.

Pistons head into regular season with defense on their minds
No one expected the Detroit Pistons to roll through teams during the preseason. With so many new faces and so many different roles needing to be defined, there were bound to be ups and downs along the way. But the preseason isn't about winning or losing. It's about building on the good and learning from the bad. This latter point is especially true when talking about Detroit's defense. It's still early, but the Pistons have shown all the signs that scoring won't be an issue in the regular season. Their defense? That's another story. Detroit had its moments when the defense shined, but the Pistons didn't maintain consistency in the preseason. That has to change if they are to improve upon last season's 39-43 record. And while the defensive mistakes are correctable, the bigger challenge -- and this will be a season-long issue -- will be for this high-powered offensive team to develop more of a defensive mindset."We can score with anybody. You see that," Pistons guard Richard Hamilton said. "But right now, we have to become a better team defensively."

On Thursday, Detroit played Minnesota without its top two interior defenders, Ben Wallace (left thigh) and Kwame Brown (left hand). Their absence was quite noticeable, with the Timberwolves' frontcourt scoring with ease in a 122-114 Minnesota win. Following the loss, Pistons coach John Kuester referenced to the impressive shooting by the Pistons (59 percent), the high assist total (21) and what was an overall strong game offensively. But throughout the preseason, he has preached that the Pistons can't win at a high level if their defense doesn't improve. The Minnesota loss proved his point. "Scoring 114 points and I'm coming in here saying, 'We lost.' That's disappointing," Kuester said. What hasn't been disappointing to Kuester has been the play of Rodney Stuckey. Although Stuckey is surrounded by more scoring options than ever, Detroit needs him to emerge as a floor leader this season. As the point guard, the ball is in his hands more than any player. And with that comes the responsibility of not only getting his teammates involved, but also figuring out when he needs to take over a game and when to defer.

Stuckey did just that in Detroit's 95-93 win at Milwaukee on Friday, a game in which he scored Detroit's last nine points. He finished with 16 points and capped off the preseason by averaging a team-best 15.8 points per game. "He's just a bulldog, plain and simple," Detroit's Ben Gordon told reporters afterward. "Rodney's probably one of the strongest point guards in the NBA, if not the strongest." And Gordon probably is among the league's most deadly scorers. After a slow start shooting the ball in the preseason, the 6-foot-2 guard strung together a number of impressive performances and finished the preseason by averaging 14.9 points per game, which was second behind Stuckey. "He's a guy that can really put the ball in the basket," Hamilton said. "When you look back at the team we had when we won a championship, we had multiple guys who could score the ball. We had Corliss (Williamson), who was a guy that could score coming off the bench. Memo (Mehmet Okur) was a threat off the bench. "This is the first time since then we had a guy who could come off the bench and put up 30 points since Corliss. It's a big plus for us."

Welcome to the NBA preview, Part 1
29. Joe Dumars
I was rooting for Detroit to bring Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon off the bench this season, just so I could make the "any time you can pay $94 million and lock up your cap space for two bench guys, you gotta do it" joke. But the Pistons foiled me by starting Villanueva. Still, they dumped Chauncey Billups and effectively tanked last season for cap flexibility; now that flexibility is gone, only they look like a mortal lock for the lottery. (You realize their "big men" are The Artist Formely Known As Ben Wallace, Kwame Brown, Villanueva and Chris Wilcox, right?) And this was a good plan … how? Some day you'll have to explain this whole "Joe Dumars is a good GM" thing to me.

(Follow-up note: It continues to floor me that anyone would overpay someone who isn't a franchise player during these rocky economic times. Like Portland this week -- the Trail Blazers inked LaMarcus Aldridge to a five-year, $65 million extension, a deal that might have made sense in the 2006 market, but not right now. I like LaMarcus Aldridge. He's solid. In this climate, he should not make more than $8 million or $9 million a year. The cap might drop $6 million next season for all we know. Also, inking anyone to an extension that early means you can't trade him for two solid years. You're basically marrying the guy. Which means Portland married a power forward who doesn't play inside and grabs seven to eight rebounds a game. With nobody else bidding for him, no real urgency to do a deal for another year and no idea whether declining revenue will keep wrecking the cap. This makes sense … how? And you thought the NBA was getting smarter.)

15b. Allen Iverson
I remain an Iverson fan. He's my No. 1 choice for a magazine feature. I thought he got a raw deal in Detroit. I think Charlotte made a mistake not pursuing him this summer. But for the league's most depressing franchise to sign Iverson in his "I need to prove I'm not done!" season, then expect him to successfully share the ball with O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph for 82 games … I mean, you have a better chance of seeing the state of Utah allow gay marriage.

Final cuts
The Cavs waived point guards Russell Robinson and Andre Barrett and center Darryl Watkins on Thursday. "Russell made a nice run late," Brown said. "He showed a sense of toughness. His defense was good."

Barrett came down with the flu, which hurt his chances to make the team.

Guard Coby Karl earned the final spot. "It came down to Andre and Coby," Brown said. "They both did some (good) things. Each one of them deserved to play."

Wolves release Antonio Daniels
With his agent unable to find a suitable trade for his client, the Wolves today reached a modest contract buyout with and requested waivers on veteran guard Antonio Daniels, who told David Kahn the week before training camp that he preferred to play elsewhere.

Bobby Jackson says goodbye
By the time Bobby Jackson took the podium to formally announce his retirement, it seemed as if there wasn't all that much to say.

He had talked publicly about hanging up the sneakers and putting on the suit, making the Friday press conference a mere formality. Wrong.

The former Kings guard and one of the organization's most popular players showed once again why fans have always found him so endearing. Heart. And lots of it. Jackson's farewell became an emotional one when he began discussing how his late mother, Sarah, wasn't there to see the man he'd become after she died of cancer in 2003.

Pau Gasol's strained right hamstring hasn't improved and it has left him unsure whether he'll be ready to play when the Lakers open the season Tuesday night.

Gasol missed the last six exhibition games, the hamstring not getting any better after he tried to practice Wednesday. "Obviously, there is a real injury with my hamstring," Gasol said. "We tried to practice a couple of days ago and it got a little worse, it got a little irritated, aggravated. So we just stepped backward. Right now we just try to let it heal so I can go back out there."

As for playing Tuesday night, Gasol wasn't sure. "It's not out of the question," Gasol said. "We've just got to see how it feels on a daily basis."

Injury update
Andrew Bynum missed his second straight exhibition game because of a right rotator cuff injury. Jackson said Bynum indicated he couldn't play by making a slashing motion with his arm across his throat.

"So he's not feeling much better," Jackson said.

Jamison will be out longer than expected
They are forced to start yet another season with a sidelined all-star after an MRI exam on Thursday revealed that Jamison would miss an additional three to five weeks after sustaining a shoulder subluxation last week in Cleveland. "The most important thing is, it's a long season. It's not anything that's going to prevent me from finishing off the season, as long as I take of my body and mind," Jamison said after the Wizards lost, 93-70, in their preseason finale against the Chicago Bulls. "I just got to do what I do as far as rehab and get ready as quickly as possible."

Jamison started lifting weights on Tuesday and has been doing some light basketball drills. The Wizards expect the injury to keep him out about 10 games. "He's really ahead of where we anticipated, but we're being really conservative right now," Coach Flip Saunders said. "We're going to be patient with him, we don't want to take any chances. We want to make sure that thing is right and fully healed."

The 33-year-old Jamison, a two-time all-star, has been one of the most durable players throughout his career as he missed more than 14 games in a season only one time in his first 11 seasons. He has played in 79 or more games seven times, including 81 last season, when he averaged 22.2 points and 8.9 rebounds.
