Dorsey Deal Almost Done: Although it's possible that the Houston Rockets could lose Carl Landry to the Charlotte Bobcats (Landry signed an offer sheet from Charlotte yesterday), word out of Houston is that Rockets GM Daryl Morey is pretty confident the team can agree to terms with Joey Dorsey some time this week.

Although Dorsey is a bit undersized, he at least provides the team with some semblance of depth on the inside. Without Landry, the Rockets will be forced to rely on Yao Ming, Chuck Hayes, and Luis Scola in the paint, which would have meant Rocket fans could expect a lot of Ron Artest at the four. Having as many options and assets in the paint is never a bad thing, especially if it meant playing Artest out of position.

Dorsey steps in as someone that can at least give some support on the boards, but the team also needs to lock up Dikembe Mutombo. Expect Dorsey to be signed and sealed by the end of the week along with Mutombo.

Thin and Trim: Baron and K-Mart: A couple of guys with knee issues decided to lose some weight over the summer: Baron Davis and Kenyon Martin.

Davis told People Magazine that he's using the Jenny Craig plan to get in shape for the basketball season. "I know Queen Latifah (Jenny Craig spokesperson), and when I saw her out there using it, I though maybe I could use it too, to work on my health and fitness goals and inspire others," Davis told the magazine. Nuggets fans can rejoice as well, as Kenyon Martin has reportedly lost 12 pounds, weighing in at 228 pounds. Martin acknowledged that he was trying to ease the stress put on his knees.

Good news for both teams, as injuries certainly have hampered both of these explosive players. It doesn't matter how they get in shape, so long as they can stay in shape and healthy throughout the season and remain productive for their respective squads.

The Houston Rockets weren't sure what to make of the offer the Charlotte Bobcats made to Carl Landry. After weeks without any offers coming in, Landry recently became the focus of attention when a handful of teams started looking at what they lacked. All things considered, the offer from Charlotte was the most attractive to the Landry camp. On Wednesday he signed a three-year, $9 million offer sheet with the Bobcats.

The Rockets weren't immediately willing to match, though not because they doubt what Landry brings to the table. Late last season Carl had become as essential an element to Houston's success as any other member of the team. With Yao Ming down and out the Rockets needed another offensive option in the paint and Landry stepped in to fill that massive void. His game-saving play against the Jazz in the playoffs was the icing on what was already an impressive rookie cake. The luxury tax is going to be an issue for Houston. In order to sign Landry to more than a three-year, $4.5 million deal, the Rockets had to put themselves over the tax threshold, and they still have Dikembe Mutombo and Joey Dorsey left to sign before camp starts next week. A source close to the situation told HOOPSWORLD today that the team is not overly concerned about being over the cap when the season starts, as they can make a move some time during the season to alleviate cap concerns.

Luther Head and Aaron Brooks are certainly on the bubble at this point, likely to be offered around the league as the season progresses, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Chuck Hayes added to the mix if Luis Scola and Landry continue to develop and improve as they did in 2007-08. For now, though, one of the most underrated rookies of last season will remain in Houston as a member of the Rockets.

Knicks Ink Allan Houston; Hawks Extend Law, Horford: To say that a comeback by Allan Houston is a long shot is to master the concept of understatement. He retired in 2005, and most players aren't able to return to professional sports after three seasons away. Houston tried to come back last year, but didn't last very long. The pace of the game is something you simply can't emulate on a treadmill or stationary bike, and Houston quickly realized he was out of his league - literally.Signed as a free agent in 1996, Houston made the All-Star team in 2000 and 2001 and helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1999. His best season was 2002-03, when he averaged a career-best 22.3 points on 44.5 percent shooting and led the NBA by making 91.9 percent of his free throws. But the Knicks missed the playoffs that season, and Houston never was the same again. It will interesting to see if he can regain even a shadow of his former greatness - or if he can even make the roster beyond training camp.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Hawks have taken care of some business, exercising options on Al Horford and Acie Law on Thursday afternoon.

A unanimous selection to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and runner-up for Rookie of the Year honors, Horford had an outstanding season in helping the Hawks reach the postseason for the first time in nine years. The first Atlanta pick to earn first team All-Rookie since Stacey Augmon in 1991-92, he nearly averaged a double-double a year ago, recording 10.1 points and 9.7 rebounds in 81 contests. Law was sidelined by injuries for part of his rookie season, but was impressive in summer league at the Rocky Mountain Revue and is expected to be a big part of the Hawks' success this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers introduced guard Sun Yue to local media on Wednesday afternoon at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. He recently signed a two-year, guaranteed deal with the franchise for the league minimum. General Manager Mitch Kupchak introduced Sun, noting the 22-year old guard prefers to be called "Q." Sun (or Q) thanked the Lakers for making his dream come true. His opening statement was brief, "I'm Chinese player coming from China. I'm 6'9". I'm a point guard."The Lakers chose Sun with the 40th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He recently started on the Chinese National Team in the Olympics, playing against the likes of future teammate Kobe Bryant. The two spoke briefly after Team USA beat China 101-70. "He just told me he'd see me soon in training camp," said Sun. While he's met a couple of his fellow Lakers, Bryant is the only one he's played any basketball with (or rather against).

Sun was appreciative of the time spent playing for his country. "In the Olympics, the coach put me in the first five," said Sun. "For me, it's a big trust. I had to play hard to make people think his decision is right." It's difficult to anticipate how quickly Sun will develop. He'll be playing behind Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar and my not get a lot of time on the court. "I'm a rookie. My first year goal is just try to practice hard and do everything that the coach wants," said Sun. "I'm a rookie I can't ask for too much." He was also honest about what he perceives to be his biggest shortcoming, "My body is too skinny for the NBA." Sun is confident that his transition to the NBA and American society will be smooth. In an odd happenstance back in 2005, the Beijing Aoshen Olympians refused to release Sun to the Chinese Basketball Association - and moved all the way to Los Angeles to play in the modern American Basketball Association (ABA). It was his Aoshen coach who gave him the nickname "Q-Tip." In his second year playing in the ABA, Sun made the All-ABA First Team averaging 13.5 points on 46% shooting, 10.5 assists, six boards and two blocks. "They may not have NBA players who are strong, fast and skilled that good," said Sun defending the talent level in the ABA. "But they're fast. They're strong." Sun's English is solid. He had an interpreter with him at the conference Wednesday but handled most of the questions without assistance. Ironically when Brian Kamenetzky of the Los Angeles Times Lakers Blog asked, "How much easier do you think it will be for you to adjust and learn in your rookie year because you have an understanding of the language?" - Sun turned to his interpreter for translation. Some of his comments didn't necessarily convert perfectly across the language gap. "I think I'm an average player. I like to do all things on the basketball court. When I defend, when I pass the ball, when I block - I enjoy it," said Sun describing his game. "Basketball makes my life so happy. I think I'm average - not one skill very, very good - but not one skill very, very bad."

Perhaps the more accurate term would have been well-rounded, but the Lakers would certainly be satisfied if Sun developed into the kind of player worthy of the league's average salary (the Mid-Level Exception of nearly $5.6 million). As far as his adjustment to America, Sun will have a support team. "I know how to drive. I have a Chinese driver's license but it doesn't work here," said Sun. "I don't think I have time to go learn drive American - so I have staff, people here to drive me around." Sun says he's thrilled to be with the Lakers. He's been a fan of the NBA since he was a child. "When I watched the Chicago Bulls (watching Michael Jordan), I started dreaming about maybe someday I can stand on that court and play with NBA players," said Sun. "I've always liked Phil Jackson's coaching style and his triangle offense. I've seen the Bulls then the Los Angeles Lakers - for five or six years I always see the same style - the triangle offense. For me right now the big problem is how to get into the offense." Sun noted that he has watched a DVD breaking down the team's offensive system numerous times and looks forward to learning it firsthand. "The Lakers are always my favorite team. Before when I started to play professional basketball (like 15 years old), I started watching the Lakers game," said Sun. "The Lakers help my dream come true - so it feels good." Sun has worked hard to follow in the footsteps of fellow countryman Yao Ming (and more recently Yi Jianlian). It's been a long road to the NBA but he's both excited to make his mark - but also realistic that his journey begins anew - from the bottom. "You have this dream. You always work hard for your dream. I just finished the first part," said Sun. "I have to work hard for the second part - to stay here and play longer." UPDATE: Sun tested positive for mononucleosis late Wednesday night and is out indefinitely. More on this odd turn next week.

Decision Time: The Houston Rockets have a decision to make. Three-years, $9 million with a team option on the third year, that's the terms of the Charlotte Bobcats' offer to Carl Landry. The Rockets are sitting at $68.9 million in salary commitments. Matching a $3 million a year deal to Landry puts the Rockets just over the Luxury Tax threshold, a place they do not want to be. Here is the quandary the Rockets face: teams under the Luxury Tax receive a portion of the dollars paid into the Luxury Tax, typically around $7 to $8 million. So if the Rockets match the Bobcats' deal and pay Carl $3 million, they will also likely face a $1 to $2 million tax bill as they'd still have to sign Dikembe Mutombo and Joey Dorsey. So they lose $8 million, have to pay Carl $3 million, plus a $2 million tax bill. In short Carl Landry now costs the Rockets $12 to $13 million. Now the biggest factor in the whole thing is Luxury Tax is calculated at the end of the season, so that gives Rockets GM Daryl Morey time to unload some salary. The smart money says that the Rockets match this deal. Landry was too much of a factor for them last year. Morey flew out and met with Carl last week and presented a $5.6 million package, so they are not too far from a deal, it really comes down to how concerned is Houston about Carl's knee, which his camp says is 100% and will the Rockets be able to move off a deal to get them back under the tax threshold? Luther Head is likely the odd man out in this equation and Joey Dorsey's deal is hinged on what's left after taking care of Carl. The Rockets are not expect to use the full seven days they have, as training camp opens Monday in Houston.

Turk Clears The Air: Hedo Turkoglu had a busy summer, he helped the Turkish National team in EuroBasket averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds a contest, keeping Turkey undefeated in Group C action. Turkey will host the 2010 World Championships in late August of 2010, and Hedo is expected to be a big part of that, and as a result he was the last Orlando Magic player to show up for "voluntary" workouts. Yesterday he told the Orlando Sentinel something everyone around the Magic has known for some time – he will be opting out of his deal in July and exploring free agency. This of course has gotten Magic fans in an uproar, suggesting that Hedo "has to be traded". So for the final time in this space – HEDO TURKOGLU does not have to be traded. The Orlando Magic hold all of the cards in this equation. If Hedo wants a boatload of money Orlando can offer the best deal. If Hedo wants out of Orlando, they can help him get the best deal. Sources close to this situation have maintained that Hedo is far too valuable a piece to what the Magic are doing for them to get impatient and cut bait on Turk. The Magic hope they can pick up where they left off (winning almost 70% of their games in the final 25) If they get out of the gate strong, there is almost no scenario that has Turk traded this season. If the Magic struggle or the injury bug hits early, all bets are off. But if Orlando comes out strong and plays Stan Van Gundy basketball, the Magic are not going to deal with July 2009 business in September or October. Turk put this out there in such a clear and demonstrative way so as to avoid having to answer this opt-out question every night.

Yesterday, there was a genuine fervor over Shaun Livingston in Portland. Sports radio was a buzz about it, and several members of the Blazers genuinely felt Shaun was being signed. We had gotten wind of an announcement on a player signing, we reached out to the appropriate people and were told – We are signing Shaun. We asked several questions about the transaction and were convinced on a lot of levels that the news was genuine, and we ran it. Now, not more than an hour after the story hit, those same sources reached out to clarify that they were wrong, and that it was Shalivk Randolph that was being signed. We immediately changed the story and put out the accurate information. It's never fun as a Publisher to be wrong, its make for an ugly day, but this desire to be mean about it, amazes me. The snide and nasty commentary borders on ridiculous.

As a news outlet we are always going to do our best to insure that the materials we put out are factual, credible and well researched. That said, we can only go on what informed people tell us, and if those people are wrong, we're going to be wrong and that happens. That's what bleeding edge news is all about. No one lied; people were wrong. No one is trying to "make news" this is what we do. "Fake news"? Carl Landry did sign with the Bobcats, Shavlik Randolph did sign with the Blazers – what was fake about that? Were we wrong about Shaun Livingston? We sure were and believe me, no one feels that more than I do, or the reporter that filed it. We can cry about it, or we can dust ourselves off and get back at it. That, too, is life on the bleeding edge.

Does Darius Miles Still Have Game?: It has been over two years since Darius Miles suffered what seemed to be a career-ending knee injury. This preseason he will try to reinvent himself with the Boston Celtics. But there is more than just Miles' knee standing in his way of making a comeback. Landing a spot on an NBA team is hard enough; landing a job on the defending champions is even tougher. Expectations are sky-high in Boston this season and every roster spot is valuable. Even though the Celtics are in the hunt for a perimeter defender, until Miles proves he can play, he needs the Celtics more than they need him.

Portland Passes on Livingston: HOOPSWORLD was told earlier in the day that the Blazers had reached an agreement with Shaun Livingston, but new information has reached us that the team ultimately decided to pass on Livingston in favor of signing Shavlik Randolph.

Randolph, the 6'10" power forward who played with the Philadelphia 76ers last season, won out because he has the size to help fill in while the Blazers are without Raef LaFrentz (shoulder) and Channing Frye (ankle). LaFrentz is out for the season, but Frye could be back some time in November. Until then Randolph will get some minutes and an opportunity to show he belongs in the rotation. His contract is non-guaranteed, so he could be battling Steven Hill and Luke Jackson for a roster spot.

Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis injured his ankle while riding a moped last month in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, according to a published report Wednesday. Citing sources close to Ellis, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the 22-year-old tore a deltoid ligament and sustained a high ankle sprain in what was deemed a "low-speed accident." Ellis originally told the Warriors he suffered the injury during a pick-up game.

Ellis, who finally came clean about the incident, violated the terms of the six-year, $66 million contract extension he signed with the team this offseason. The Chronicle reported that riding a moped is prohibited under the uniform player contract, making it possible for the Warriors to terminate the deal. The newspaper said that would be an unlikely option, instead suggesting Ellis might be heavily fined or suspended. No decision will be made on Ellis' punishment until next week, the report said. Ellis had surgery on the ankle on August 27. The procedure was performed by Dr. Angus McBryde at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ellis will have his ankle immobilized for approximately six weeks and spend that time undergoing what the team referred to as "off-court" rehabilitation. A three-year veteran, Ellis averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 53 percent from the floor last season for the Warriors. Golden State was counting on the 6-3 Ellis to assume an even bigger role in the wake of Baron Davis' signing with the Los Angeles Clippers during the summer.

Jamie Dixon, the only coach in Pittsburgh history to guide the Panthers to five straight NCAA tournament appearances, signed a three-year extension Thursday that will keep him under contract at the school through the 2015-2016 season. The school did not release financial teams, but the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported that Dixon received a raise from last season's salary of nearly $1.3 million.

Entering his sixth campaign, Dixon has a 132-40 record at Pittsburgh. Under his watch, the Panthers have posted five straight 20-win seasons and made "Sweet 16" appearances in 2004 and 2007. They also won the Big East Conference regular season crown in 2004 and tournament title in 2008. "I love both the university and our outstanding city," Dixon said. "I'm fortunate to be surrounded by a special group of players, a great coaching staff, the most supportive administration in the country and tremendous fans."

Dixon's 132 wins are tied for third all-time among NCAA Division I coaches after five seasons. "This contract extension is all about commitment to Jamie and his commitment to the University of Pittsburgh," Panthers athletic director Steve Pederson said. "Jamie has risen to the top of his profession in a very short time. He is deserving of this commitment by the university for establishing Pitt basketball as one of the nation's premier program." Despite losing two starters to injuries, the Panthers posted a 27-10 record last season en route to winning the Big East tournament title. This season, Pittsburgh returns three starters in Sam Young, DeJuan Blair and Lavance Fields. The Panthers are ranked in the top-10 in virtually all preseason polls.

Guard Allan Houston is making an improbable comeback with the New York Knicks. Donnie Walsh, the Knicks' president of basketball operations, re-signed Houston as a free agent on Thursday. New York also signed free-agent swingman Dan Grunfeld on Thursday. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Houston's career was thought to be finished when he retired on October 17, 2005, following two injury-plagued seasons in which he was limited to just 70 games due to an arthritic left knee. The 6-6 shooting guard is the franchise's fourth-leading scorer all-time. With 11,165 points, he is surpassed only by Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier and Willis Reed - all among the NBA's 50 Greatest Players.

Houston, 37, earned just as much fame toward the end of his career for the knee problems and long-term contract that caused to NBA to name a rule after him. As the face of the franchise at the time, Houston was signed to a six-year, $100 million contract in August 2001. He was still owed nearly $40 million through 2007, including $19.125 million for the 2005-06 season when he called it quits. As part of the new collective bargaining agreement in the summer of 2005, teams were allowed to waive one player whose salary would not count against luxury tax computations. It was called the "Amnesty Rule" but became known as the "Allan Houston Rule." When healthy, Houston was one of the top shooting guards in the NBA. In 12 seasons with Detroit and New York, he averaged 17.3 points on 44 percent shooting, including 40 percent from 3-point range. He raised those numbers in the postseason. Houston's best days came with the Knicks. Signed as a free agent in 1996, he made the All-Star team in 2000 and 2001 and helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1999. In the first round of the 1999 playoffs, Houston made one of the most famous shots in league history, a runner in the lane that bounced off the rim and through in the final second to give New York a victory at rival Miami in the decisive fifth game of the series.

Houston's best season was 2002-03, when he averaged a career-best 22.3 points on 44.5 percent shooting and led the NBA by making 91.9 percent of his free throws. But the Knicks missed the playoffs that season, and Houston never was the same again. In 2004-05, Houston played in just 20 games and averaged 11.9 points - the second-lowest total of his 12-year career. Houston was a member of the 2000 United States Olympic team that won a gold medal in Sydney, Australia. The 6-6 Grunfeld was undrafted out of Stanford and played the last two seasons overseas. He spent the 2007-08 season in Spain, where he averaged 14.7 points and 3.3 rebounds for Aguas De Valencia. In 2006-07, Grunfeld averaged 12.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for Oldenburg in Germany.Grunfeld is the son of current Washington Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld, who was a part of the Knicks organization for over 17 years as a player, broadcaster, assistant coach and general manager (1991-1999).

The Portland Trail Blazers added another piece to their strong frontline on Thursday, signing forward Shavlik Randolph.

Randolph averaged 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 79 games over three seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was limited to nine games in the 2007-08 season after suffering an ankle injury.

The 24-year-old joins Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge, Martell Webster, Ike Diogu, Joel Przybilla, Channing Frye and Travis Outlaw among the frontcourt players in Blazers' camp. Randolph played three seasons at Duke before signing with the 76ers as an undrafted free agent in 2005.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Sun Yue is suffering from mononucleosis and will miss the start of training camp, according to a published report Thursday.

The Los Angeles Times reported Sun skipped an unofficial practice with Lakers' teammates Wednesday morning because he felt lethargic, which he attributed to jet lag after arriving in Los Angeles from China a few days earlier. The Chinese native became ill Wednesday night after an introductory news conference and was taken to an area hospital a few hours later, the report said.

A timetable for his return has not yet been determined. "It varies on the severity of it and the individual," Lakers spokesman John Black said to the newspaper. "We simply don't know." A second-round draft pick in 2007, the 22-year-old Sun signed a two-year contract with the Lakers last month. He averaged 6.8 points and 2.5 assists a game for the Chinese national team in the Olympics.

Center Robert Swift recently suffered a broken bone in his right hand and has been unable to fully participate in the team's voluntary workouts. He is likely to be limited in training camp and the preseason.

Swift is entering this season recovering from March surgery to repair a torn meniscus. "Robert has been unable to play less because of his leg and more because of his hand,” Carlesimo said. "That's prevented him from playing in any of the live stuff. He does individual stuff with (assistant coach) Mark Bryant. But he's doing most of it with his left hand. We're just trying to go as slow as we can, and hopefully by next week he'll be ready to go.

"We're hopeful, but we're prepared that maybe he can't go the whole practice or maybe he can't go two practices in a row. It's probably going to be to his tolerance.”

Chris Wilcox, who started 55 games last season before missing the final 14 games with a sprained right pinkie finger, has been battling what could be a possible virus in recent days while in Houston.

When Wilcox spoke with Carlesimo on Wednesday morning, he said he hasn't been feeling good the last few weeks.

"We're anxious to see him,” Carlesimo said. "First, we need to evaluate the finger, which I don't think will be a concern, and then look at his conditioning. The quicker we get him in condition and 100 percent physically, no question that's going to be critical.”

The Atlanta Hawks have exercised the contract options for the 2009-10 season on forward/center Al Horford and guard Acie Law, it was announced today by Executive VP/General Manager Rick Sund. Per team policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

During the playoffs, the 6-10 forward/center from Florida increased his totals, scoring 12.6 points and grabbing 10.4 rebounds in the seven games against Boston. Despite battling injuries much of the 2007-08 campaign, Law was fifth among rookies in assists and third on the Hawks, to go along with 4.2 points per game. He saw action in 56 contests and is coming off a fine summer effort at the Rocky Mountain Revue, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 16.2 points, 3.6 assists and 2.2 rebounds.
