Elsewhere, another veteran big man — former Spurs forward Fabricio Oberto — was preparing to hit the free-agent market as well. Oberto, dealt through Milwaukee to Detroit as part of last week's Richard Jefferson deal, was waived Wednesday by the Pistons.

Once he clears waivers July 8, Oberto would be free to sign with any team. By NBA rule, he would have to wait 20 days before becoming eligible to re-sign with the Spurs.

Events in the free-agent market between now and then are likely to figure heavily on whether the Spurs make a push to bring back Oberto.

Danny Ainge was on the telephone at his HealthPoint office when the NBA free agent market opened at midnight yesterday. Among Ainge’s first calls was to Bill Strickland, agent for center-forward Rasheed Wallace. “I made some calls,’’ said Ainge, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations. “Rasheed is a guy we have interest in. We made calls with quite a few free agents’ representatives late last night from my office to let them know we have interest. We contacted 10 free agents and tried to get some feedback in what they are looking for and their interest long term. But that’s about it. Mostly for something down the road.’’

The Celtics’ interest in Wallace is not for the long term, though. Wallace, 34, might be the most intriguing of free agent candidates, his relationship with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett a possible advantage.

Strickland confirmed the Celtics’ contact with Wallace with a text message: “The interest is mutual.’’

Ben Gordon agrees to five-year deal with Pistons
Ben Gordon's whirlwind trip to Detroit on Wednesday ended with the now former Bulls star verbally agreeing to a five-year, $55 million deal with the Pistons.

Gordon, who led the Bulls in scoring each of the last four seasons, was wooed by Pistons president Joe Dumars when the two met throughout the day at the team's practice facility in Auburn Hills, Mich. Dumars made it clear to Gordon he was Detroit's top priority on what was the first day of free-agency.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva, a former Gordon teammate at Connecticut, also met with Dumars and reportedly agreed to a five-year, $35 million deal.

Ben Gordon looks like he’ll get his money. But it seems unlikely he’ll see the playoffs for some time to come.

Ben Gordon to Leave Bulls for Pistons
The Detroit Pistons Wednesday agreed to show Ben the money with a contract estimated at five years for $55 million, sources throughout the NBA and Detroit said. One source said it is slightly above that figure. The Pistons also got an agreement on a five year deal estimated from $35 million to $40 million from former Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva.

The Pistons by Wednesday afternoon had posted pictures of Gordon and Villanueva on their official team web site even though there is a moratorium on signings until July 8.

The Pistons, who also are without a coach after firing Michael Curry and are said to be leaning toward hiring assistant John Kuester, now have a backcourt with the 6-1 Gordon, Rodney Stuckey and Richard Hamilton and perimeter type forwards in Tayshaun Prince and Villanueva.

Kuester is now considered the lead candidate and perhaps former Piston Bill Laimbeer. Former Bulls and Pistons coach Doug Collins was rumored as a candidate. Collins said Wednesday night, “I am not a candidate for the job.” Collins said he talked to Pistons GM Joe Dumars, but told Dumars he was not interested. Dumars had been pursuing Collins for weeks even though Michael Curry still was coach. Collins said contrary to reports he never contacted the Pistons or sought the job, but Dumars made several attempts to hire him. Former Mavs coach Avery Johnson also is said to be a candidate and has spoken with the Pistons. But sources close to Johnson say Johnson is uncertain about the situation.

UPDATE: The addition of Artest is a coup for the defending champion Lakers, who have faced the prospect of trying to retain their own free agents, Odom and Ariza, and have seen other contenders make major efforts to improve. Most notably, the Celtics dispatched their Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, along with coach Doc Rivers and managing partner Wyc Grousbeck to Detroit on Thursday to offer free agent Rasheed Wallace a mid-level contract. Cleveland's acquisition of Shaq put the Lakers, Celtics, and Magic on notice that the Cavaliers were making a serious push for a title next season. The Cavs' pursuit of Wallace, Artest, and Ariza signaled that they weren't finished after the pre-draft trade for Shaq.

Allen Iverson likes Grizzlies
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports: Several NBA sources have confirmed to me that controversial and wildly popular guard Allen Iverson - through representatives - has made the Grizzlies aware that he would like to play in Memphis. The veteran, prolific scorer is a free agent for the first time in his professional career. While no deal is imminent and conversations have been only cursory, Griz brass are said to be internally weighing the pros and cons of possibly adding Iverson to the team’s youth movement. Iverson would certainly have to take a major pay cut from the $21 million he earned last season with Detroit. The Griz would only entertain Iverson with what they’d deem a reasonable price, and if the 34-year-old agreed to play off the bench.

InsideHoops.com editor says: Adding Iverson would spark some team interest, ticket sales and maybe a few wins for the Grizzlies, but not really accomplish much more than that. It would probably wouldn’t help the development of the young players Memphis is actually building around. Adding Iverson would be a small temporary boost.

Artest Says He'll Sign With Lakers
Forget the game of cat-and-mouse everyone thought the Los Angeles Lakers were playing with free agent forward Trevor Ariza; it seems they're very serious about moving on. They're so serious, in fact, that they are close to reaching an agreement with his replacement: Houston Rockets free agent Ron Artest. "I'm definitely going to L.A. -- to sign, yeah," Artest said in a phone interview with CBS Sports. "Lakers, Lakers, Lakers. I'm in L.A. right now. ... I don't really care about the money. I'll play there for nothing. ... L.A. was very interested in me, and they got me."

This is a major move for the Lakers, who not only get a viable replacement for Ariza and/or Lamar Odom, but also prevent a highly sought-after free agent from signing with a potential threat in their chase for a second consecutive NBA Championship. The Cleveland Cavaliers were also interested in Artest, though talks didn't go very far on that front. "I talked to Coach Phil, and I was happy to talk to him," Artest said. "Big fan of Coach Phil. My agent talked to Kupchak, and I met with Dr. Buss. I'm very, very excited."

By agreeing to a contract with Artest the Lakers have made it clear that Trevor Ariza is no longer in their plans. Ariza met with the Houston Rockets today and is expected to attract interest from a number of other teams.

Gortat Gives Verbal To Dallas
Restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat has reportedly given a verbal agreement to the Dallas Mavericks for the full MLE for five years according to Marc Stein of ESPN.

The full MLE amount won't be determined for a couple days still, at the same time when the NBA announces what the salary cap amount will be for the 2009-10 season, but should begin at about $5.6 million. Because the Mavericks are over the salary cap no matter what the announced amount is, the MLE is the most they can offer another team's free agent. Because Gortat is a restricted free agent, the Orlando Magic can still choose to match the offer. Matching the deal would put the Magic into luxury tax territory - the Mavericks are already there so will have to pay twice the amount of Gortat's deal in 2009-10 - but as the Magic have said multiple times in recent days they have the green light to do so from ownership.

They have also said they would likely match any offer to Gortat that was the MLE or lower. There is still a possibility the two teams could work out a sign-and-trade deal after Gortat signs the offer from Dallas on the 8th. However, looking at the contracts Dallas has on the books there doesn't seem to be anything in the price range that would be an obvious need for Orlando. What is not immediately clear is if Gortat is absolutely committed to leaving Orlando. Will he be okay if the Magic match and he has to return to being Dwight Howard's backup? Or would he really rather the Magic didn't match? The answer to those questions could determine if the Magic and Mavericks can work something out so Orlando doesn't lose Gortat for nothing

YAO MING OUT NEXT SEASON?
This is just a heart-breaking unexpected development. Sure, Yao never plays a whole season (although he just missed a handful of regular games last season), but to hear that he might miss next season, and could even be facing a career-ending situation….just sad. What's weird is that Yao thought he was progressing very well. He is experiencing no pain, swelling, or tenderness, but a recent CT scan shows the hairline fracture has actually extended across the bone. Now doctors are trying to determine the best course of treatment, so his future is just simply unknown.

CARLOS BOOZER STAYING WITH JAZZ
OK, Carlos Boozer announced back in December that he was opting out of his contract, and that no matter what, he was going to get a pay raise. Then the inevitable speculations about his destination began and went on and on, ad nauseam. We were convinced Boozer was definitely going somewhere until recently when he started extolling the virtues of the Jazz (miraculously coinciding with the realization that nobody was going to pay him what he thinks he's worth). So, on the last day that a decision was required, Boozer elected not to opt out of the final year of his contract (Mehmet Okur followed suit). Best of luck to the Jazz in figuring out where to go now.

Comparing Gordon and Hamilton: With the Detroit Pistons agreeing to terms on a five-year contract in excess of $50 million total with shooting guard Ben Gordon, the rumors swirling around what the Pistons will do next have begun in earnest. Rip Hamilton, the incumbent shooting guard, is under contract for four more season for almost $50 million himself, so the question becomes can Detroit make it work, or will Hamilton (or Tayshaun Prince) be out the door? It will likely have to be one of them, but let's explore whether or not Hamilton and Gordon could co-exist. (It should be noted, Gordon said there were no stipulations to the agreement and he signed it understanding he would be backing up Hamilton – but that's a lot of money for a reserve guard.)Defense has to play into this. Hamilton is not a great defender, but he's much better than Gordon. While Gordon is absolutely a great scorer, there is evidence (anecdotal and can be found breaking down film and box scores) he could be giving up just as much as he gets himself. That's an edge to Rip.

On offense the edge goes to Gordon, but only ever so slightly. He has topped 20 points a game twice in five NBA seasons, which is good considering he has only started half the games he has played. The two seasons he has started more than not are the two his scoring was at its highest (2006-07 and 2008-09). Hamilton has topped the 20 mark twice in 10 seasons and has been a starter the vast majority of his career. Hamilton has a higher field-goal percentage, but Gordon shoots better from long-range. Both are excellent free throw shooters and bring assist and rebound numbers in the three a game range in both categories. Their steal and block numbers are also almost identical. So, um, what exactly did Detroit acquire? Rip Hamilton Junior? Can a team be effective with two of what seems to be the exact same player on their roster? Given that both players expect and should get over 30 minutes a game, there will be times in the game when they will have to be on the court together (if Gordon does come off the bench) and how exactly do you handle that as far as ball distribution? They both can pass, but prefer to shoot, so unless you pair them with very good passing big men you might find Rodney Stuckey making one pass and a shot going up.

It seems that many think Tayshaun Prince will be the player on the way out and Hamilton could slide over to the three spot, but if I were Detroit I'd hate to see him guarding LeBron James or Paul Pierce on a nightly basis. Sorry Rip, but you might want to start thinking about which moving company you want to use, because by signing Gordon it would seem the only logical choice for Joe Dumars is to find you a new home. However, it won't be easy to find a team willing to take on the four years and $50 million owed to a player who is already 31 years old, especially for a big man the Pistons desperately need.

The Boston Celtics are working to get a meeting with Rasheed Wallace, who is said to be close to a deal with the San Antonio Spurs. Wallace was scheduled to meet with the Spurs and the Cleveland Cavaliers today, as well. The Celtics are willing to offer two seasons, so the deciding factor may be which team is willing to gamble for a third season on an older big man.

Celtics reportedly make offer to Wallace
Rasheed Wallace, the free-agent forward who spent the last five-plus seasons in Detroit, got the full-court press from the Boston Celtics on Thursday, according to a report in The Boston Globe. The Globe, citing a single NBA source, said that Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck, team president Danny Ainge, coach Doc Rivers and All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, all met with Wallace for three hours in Detroit.

The Celtics are reportedly offering a contract using the mid-level exception, the Globe reported. The newspaper said that Wallace didn't make a decision during the meeting. The Boston Herald reported that Wallace has informed teams courting him that he won't make a decision quickly.

Wallace averaged 12 points and 7.4 rebounds last season for the Pistons. For his 14-year career, he's averaged 15 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Committed? Gortat to tour Mavs' facility
Restricted free-agent center Marcin Gortat was scheduled to fly to Dallas on Thursday after giving the Mavericks a verbal commitment to sign an offer sheet with them next week, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks are bringing Gortat to town to tour the area and the team's facilities after extending him an offer believed to be worth Dallas' full mid-level exception -- which could translate to a five-year deal starting at roughly $5.6 million -- in hopes of dissuading the Orlando Magic from matching the offer. Gortat averaged just 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season and 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds during the Magic's run to the NBA Finals, but his opportunities in Orlando were limited behind All-Star center Dwight Howard.

Since free agency commenced at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Gortat has received strong interest from the other two Texas teams (Houston and San Antonio) as well as Atlanta, Cleveland, Indiana and Oklahoma City, sources said. Orlando will have seven days to match any offer sheet Gortat signs next Wednesday, which is the first day free agents are allowed to sign new contracts. The Magic have stressed their intent to match offers for the 6-foot-11 native of Poland but doing so would almost certainly send them well into luxury-tax territory.

Artest says he's leaving Rockets for LA
Free-agent forward Ron Artest says he's leaving the Houston Rockets to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

In a text message to ESPN.com on Thursday night, Artest wrote: "I am happy to say I am goin' to L.A." ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reports that Artest and the Lakers have reached a verbal agreement on what is believed to be a three-year contract worth an estimated $18 million. Wednesday is the first day free agents are permitted to sign new deals.

In his text message, Artest said that he met Thursday with Lakers owner Jerry Buss and had spoken to coach Phil Jackson about the move to Los Angeles, where Artest has been spending his offseasons.

Ariza verbally commits to Houston
Trevor Ariza has made a verbal commitment to sign with the Houston Rockets, according to sources close to the process.

The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship.

With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers appeared unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

Artest going to Lakers
Ron Artest is joining Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

David Bauman, Artest's agent, told The Associated Press that the Houston Rockets forward has verbally agreed to play for the NBA champions next season. Bauman said the final details are still being worked out, but could be finished as early as Thursday night.

ESPN.com reported that Artest had agreed to a three-year deal worth $18 million. Bauman would not confirm those numbers, saying the deal was still being negotiated. "We're not quite there yet," Bauman said. "We're still working on it."
