Boring deadline day does little to shake up NBA
The NBA’s silly season finally came to an end at 3 p.m. today, and the only trade-deadline deals of note were the Bulls sending Larry Hughes to the Knicks for Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Saginaw's Anthony Roberson and the Magic bringing in Houston guard Rafer Alston in a three-team trade with Memphis.

That will really upset the balance of power in the Eastern Conference. Yawn.Meanwhile, over at Pistons Command Central, things were chill. The only deal they made was trading guard Alex Acker on Monday to the Clippers in what was basically a move for financial considerations.

So after many weeks of speculation about Amare Stoudemire, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh and Carlos Boozer, all the big names will remain in place. In the East, the top dogs are still Cleveland and Boston. And out West, it’s San Antonio (tonight’s Pistons opponent) and the Lakers. Isn’t this where we started?

Pistons utilize zone: Zone has been a dirty word to some Pistons in the past, but it worked to aid a rally against Milwaukee recently."It's not something you do in long stretches," Curry said, "but throughout games when teams run things that are difficult for us to defend because of the personnel we currently have, we can jump in the zone and maybe do a good job at it."

One of Curry's main concerns with the defense of his team -- in addition to rebounding woes -- is the ability to stop teams on dribble penetration into the lane. "We haven't been as good at the basket as we have in years past, and so sometimes we've been able to clean up mistakes in the paint and at the basket," he said. "We have got to do a better job handling the penetration up top, and the zone kind of helped us with that."

Joe Dumars: Pistons will make moves this summer
Joe Dumars and the Detroit Pistons didn't make any deals before the trade deadline passed Thursday, but the president of basketball operations promised some action come summer. "Given the fact we have to play a season next year, I think I need to use that money," Dumars said of the expected $20 million or more the Pistons are expected to have available under the NBA salary cap. "If we weren't going to play next year I probably wouldn't do anything with it, but I think we're going to tip it off next year so I'm going to try and put a (good) team on the floor."

Dumars said options will be plenty in the summer, and that could mean a trade or trades. He laughed when asked if he might wait for the much-ballyhooed free-agent class of 2010."You can't wait," he said. "You can't sit here and two years down the road hope we get somebody. You have no idea what could happen. We're not going to shut down. We're going to keep going."Dumars said he was on the phone a lot during the last 72 hours before the deadline, but nothing came close to tempting him. He said he had given other general managers his parameters, which included not wanting to add any money to the current under-the-luxury tax position ($450,000). In addition, he didn't want to disrupt the expected cap space this summer. "That alone will probably knock out some of the phone calls you are going to get because people know what they are going to present," he said. "You can see a lot of the deals (prior to the deadline) were where people were just getting off money."

Pistons coach Michael Curry said he never paid much attention to the trade deadline as a player, and didn't as a head coach this week. "I try to deal with the things I can control," he said. Rasheed Wallace, the subject of several trade rumors, listened as reporters filled him in on the trades that happened just before deadline. He said he had not paid attention, though his wife had reminded him of the deadline and a cousin called asking what he knew about the Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland rumors.

Tim Duncan had 18 points and 18 rebounds and Tony Parker added 19 points and 11 assists and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons 83-79 Thursday night. The Spurs broke a three-game road losing streak, while the Pistons dropped to 2-10 at home in the past six weeks. Allen Iverson led all scorers with 31 points, and Antonio McDyess added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

San Antonio led 64-58 going into the fourth, and although the Pistons got as close as three, George Hill's fast-break dunk made it 73-66 with 6:35 left. Detroit rallied again, and Iverson's jumper pulled the Pistons within 78-77 with 3 minutes to play. Two stops gave the Pistons a pair of chances to take the lead, and Iverson took advantage of the second with a layup with 1:21 to go. Rasheed Wallace fouled Parker, who gave San Antonio a 80-79 lead from the line, and Iverson missed at the other end. McDyess hurdled the Spurs bench to save the rebound, but Michael Finley grabbed the loose ball.

Parker's jumper bounced off the rim, and Wallace grabbed the rebound with 28 seconds left. Wallace missed a fadeaway over Duncan, and Bruce Bowen was fouled before he could call timeout. Despite coming into the game shooting 47 percent from the line, Bowen hit both shots to make it 82-79 with 9.7 seconds left. Iverson missed a tying 3-pointer and Duncan clinched the game from the free-throw line.

Stuckey will be better
It's not exactly going out on a limb to say that Pistons second-year point guard Rodney Stuckey will be better tonight than he was against the Bucks the other night. After all, a three-point, one-assist, fouling-out game is pretty easy to beat. But as Michael Curry has said, Stuckey needs to be a lot better than that for this team to have success. It's almost like he's been a shadow of himself. He is trying to balance his own natural aggressiveness against the need to get the other starters going. They're veterans. They can get themselves going. He should make get himself into the flow first and then have them play off him. For now. Once he gets himself back to normal, then he can do more incorporating the others into the game first.

Pistons 9, Spurs 0 at 9:13 of 1st
That last play by Rodney Stuckey is exactly what we've been looking for from him. He took the ball the length of the court, examined his options briefly and then took it to the basket for a layup. He has to do that at least occasionally because he can and to keep the defense on their toes. He also has more assists already than he had the other night after assisting on the first two Rasheed Wallace field goals. But I don't expect that the Spurs are going to miss shots like this all night. It'd be nice if they did, but I doubt it.

Yeah, well, you knew the Spurs weren't going to be shut out tonight. But what was once a 12-point lead at 19-7 is now down to three at 19-16. It's mostly Tony Parker (nine points) with a little Tim Duncan (four points) and Matt Bonner (three) thrown in. Antonio McDyess is on the bench with two fouls, which doesn't help.

Pistons 24, Spurs 20 after 1st
I wish Rip Hamilton had taken that shot when he got the ball with about 16 seconds left. I know he didn't want to miss and have the Spurs run out and get a chance at a last-second bucket, but I think that was the best chance to score at that point. Oh, well. It was a good start for the Pistons, which they have not had on a consistent basis lately. Now, can they keep it going?

If there's one player that everyone would like to see win a championship, it's Antonio McDyess. No one was sadder than he was when they lost Game 7 of the Finals to the Spurs in San Antonio the year after they won it all. McDyess missed the title by one season. The guy gives it his all, night in and night out, and is one of the nicest players you could meet. On a completely unrelated note, TNT's Craig Sager is wearing a tan and orange striped blazer over a shiny orangish shirt that probably came from the 1970s disco era.

You know, it's just a suggestion but how about trying to get a hand or two up in front of Matt Bonner? He's 3-of-3 from three-point land and he has the Spurs within two points.

FSN Detroit needs look no further for the play of the game. That was it. Jason Maxiell completely posterized Mr. 3-point shooter, Matt Bonner. Bonner just looked stunned as Maxiell took flight and punched the ball through the hoop. Now let's see if he can hit the free throw to tie it up.

Spurs 45, Pistons 40 at halftime
The Spurs didn't let a little thing like an early 12-point deficit deter them from taking a lead into halftime. They're a veteran team, not likely to get too upset over much. The Pistons had a nice start but were not able to build on it in the second quarter.

That's the best they can do?
The last game I was here I said I wasn't going to watch the Pistons shoot free throws unless they made two in a row. Well, they are even worse tonight, which is hard to believe. They're 3-for-9, with Tayshaun Prince 2-for-4, Allen Iverson 1-for-2, and Jason Maxiell 0-for-3. Seriously. It's not that hard.

Well, the Pistons tied it up oh-so-briefly. Allen Iverson miraculously hit both free throws and it was 51-all. Then Tim Duncan got a rebound tip on the other end and Michael Finley hit a jumper. The Pistons are still in striking distance. Like so many games, it's going to come down to how well they play in the fourth quarter. They haven't had the best fourth quarters this season. Let's hope tonight is the exception rather than the rule.

At worst, I was hoping for a two-point deficit heading into the final quarter. That does not appear to be happening. And a win won't be happening unless the Pistons can somehow recapture what they had to start the game and hope that the Spurs' shots stop falling.

Spurs 64, Pistons 58 after 3rd
I remember when the Pistons almost never trailed heading into the fourth quarter. Seems like not that long ago, yet it's a chronic condition this season. I'm not saying they can't come back and make up the six-point deficit in the fourth, but it appears unlikely. It's very unfortunate, especially considering the energy with which they started the game. Maybe Rip Hamilton or Allen Iverson will catch fire or something. We'll see.

Matt Bonner must be stopped. I don't know what it's going to take. Maybe Rasheed Wallace guarding him with his long frame and arms, but this is ridiculous. He's 5-of-7 from three-point range and is one shy of his career and season-high for three-point field goals made in one game, set Jan. 27 at Utah.

Just what the Pistons didn't need -- George Hill with a dunk on the fast break. And what no children should be watching is on the scoreboard now -- Hooper and the Spare Tires doing their best Beyonce impression. Apparently they were on Fox 2 this morning doing the routine. Yikes

The Pistons aren't giving up, but they still haven't gotten over the hump. Allen Iverson is having a nice game with 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting. Rodney Stuckey still has just two points. He's only taken three shots. He does have eight assists, seven of which came in the first half.
