REASONS TO STRESS
1. One wonders whether there's enough time to develop any sort of chemistry. During training camp, the Pistons talked about developing chemistry and how that would take most of the regular season. Well, because of injuries, they simply haven't had time to have everyone healthy and play together. There isn't much time left.

2. As dangerous as this team is on the perimeter, opponents don't have much to worry about in the blocks. There simply isn't a dangerous player in the low post. When the Pistons have a cold outside shooting night, they usually lose.
3. Trade speculation could become heated if the Pistons don't get any closer to the playoffs before the Feb. 18 trade deadline. With that, a key player such as Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton could leave and weaken the roster.

4. The Pistons are having trouble scoring. Largely because of the injuries, they're only scoring 92.2 points per game, 29th in the league, with only New Jersey (90.1) scoring fewer. The defense has been better than expected (ninth), but has had some ghastly evenings, as well.
5. The schedule isn't kind after this six-game home stand to close out January. There are three more games each with Cleveland, Boston and Atlanta, a four-game West Coast trip, and 11 sets of back-to-back games. Climbing back to .500 won't be easy.

THREE STARS OF THE FIRST HALF
3. Jonas Jerebko --- When training camp began, no one knew who this kid was. Several months later, Jerebko has shown everyone he's capable of a long and productive NBA career. He simply doesn't stop moving, working or scrapping on the floor.

2. Rodney Stuckey -- There have been times he looks like an All-Star. It's debatable whether he's more effective in the long run as a point guard or shooting guard, but what's not in question whether this guy can be an effective scorer in the league. He's relentless driving to the basket.

1. Ben Wallace -- Everyone felt he would be one of the last players on the bench, rarely getting any playing time, more of a veteran influence than anything else for the younger big men on the roster. Wrong. He's been the most consistent player on the team, still a defensive presence at age 35 that players a decade younger could only dream of being. And, of late, he's been supplying a bit of offense.

FIRST-HALF DISAPPOINTMENTS
1. The injuries: Richard Hamilton has played in 11 games. Ben Gordon has played 25 games. Will Bynum, 27 games. Tayshaun Prince has played in only nine games. Nobody knows how good the Pistons can be because nobody has seen this team whole for any period of time. Nobody knows what this team is capable of. When it has been together, it's looked like a dangerous offensive team, and better defensively than most people felt it could be. But injuries have marred this squad from opening night.

2. Jason Maxiell, Kwame Brown, Chris Wilcox: The Pistons were hoping for at least one of the younger big men to break through and be a significant factor, but none have come close. Wilcox has only recently been a positive addition to the starting lineup after spending considerable time at the end of the bench. Maxiell continues to be an inconsistent performer in his fourth season, while Brown has been the last player on the bench in recent weeks. They're lucky Ben Wallace has been good as he's been.

3. The 13-game losing streak that lasted nearly a month, from Dec. 15 to Jan. 11, tied for the second-longest in franchise history. They hadn't lost that many consecutive games since the 1993-94 season. The Pistons looked feeble and non-competitive in several of those losses, which seemed to affect the team's overall confidence. The Pistons haven't been able to win on the road, either. They have a 4-17 record away from The Palace, which will have to improve in the second half.

WHAT'S AHEAD
The Feb. 18 trade deadline looms large. With the development of Jonas Jerebko and Austin Daye, the Pistons might not have a need for Tayshaun Prince, who has one season left, after this one, on his contract and would relieve $11 million per season for the team off the salary cap should he depart.

Richard Hamilton's name has also been rumored, but it's unlikely with four years left on his contract. Prince appears to be the easiest player to move. But can Prince be traded? The vast majority of teams are looking to shed salaries, not add.

And among the playoff contenders out there, there doesn't appear to be a fit anywhere for a player with Prince's skills. Then again, if Prince returns soon from a sore knee and plays well, and the Pistons surge upward in the standings, why trade him? On this roster, Prince can still be a valuable presence on and off the court, a veteran with a championship on his resume.

By the numbers
24 -- The number of victories the Pistons had last season at the midway point of the schedule (they had 14 entering tonight's game).
17 -- The number of losses the Pistons had last season at the midway point (they had 26 entering tonight's game)
0 -- Number of three-pointers the Pistons made Monday in New York, while missing all 12 attempts.

Quotable
“We know what we have but we know we haven’t had a chance to put it on the floor. We know this team is capable, we just haven’t had a chance to really be consistent with all the weapons we have on the floor at the same time.”
-- Ben Wallace, on the frustrations of the first half of the season.

Estate of Pistons owner mired in legal battles
Charity commitments the Pistons owner is said to have made before his death at issue. A legal fight has erupted pitting the widow of Detroit Pistons owner William Davidson against the managers of his estate, amid reports that she is maneuvering to sell the team. At issue: Allegations that his estate refuses to pay $20 million the business-and-sports tycoon promised to Jewish and Israeli causes before he died March 13. The accusations, which emerge from December lawsuits, come as Karen Davidson, 61, is moving to shed some of his holdings. She sold the Detroit Shock women's basketball team in fall and a Manhattan condominium for $3.55 million in August, and recently listed the 10-acre Stony Creek Ranch in Aspen, Colo., for $47 million. Sources also say she's shopping the Pistons, which Forbes claims is worth $479 million. Through a spokesman, Karen Davidson declined comment on the Pistons, but addressed lawsuits against the estate involving a firm that lists her as manager. "Karen Davidson regrets that these issues could not be settled amicably," said spokesman Michael Layne. "She has joined in legal actions to have the estate of William Davidson honor this clear, unequivocal commitment ... helping fulfill William Davidson's vision and love for the state of Israel."William Davidson, who was 86, parlayed ownership of Guardian Industries glass company into a sports empire that once included the Pistons, Shock, Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team and Detroit Fury arena football team. He also was a world renowned philanthropist who gave heavily to Jewish and Israeli causes. His 19-page will, signed one week before his death, breaks his estate estimated at more than $1 billion into several trusts and names three beneficiaries: Karen Davidson; a son, Ethan Daniel Davidson; and daughter, Marla Jane Davidson Karimipour; all of Bloomfield Hills. The will doesn't specify how much each would receive, or which properties, but lists the estate's representatives as Jonathan S. Aaron, William Davidson's son-in-law, and Eric L. Garber.

Before speculation of the Pistons sale broke this week, legal actions against the estate were already in motion. On Dec. 1, Milestones Upgrading & Industries Co., an Israeli company, filed suit in Oakland Circuit Court claiming the estate reneged on $15.35 million that William Davidson pledged to invest through his company, Big Ben Investments. That firm, for which state records list Karen Davidson as manager, received $23.65 million in earlier investments from her husband, according to court records. Big Ben also filed a similar lawsuit after the estate denied the request from Milestones. Both cases are assigned to Oakland Circuit Judge Nanci Grant. According to court papers, Milestones was established by Davidson with his longtime friend, retired Israel Brig. Gen. Oded Tyrah. The private-equity firm was intended to "invest in small to medium-sized Israeli-related companies, using proceeds, $40 million, from an earlier Israeli investment," according to Layne. The suits claim Aaron informed company officials in April that "because of a dispute arising among the beneficiaries of the estate," no more money was forthcoming. State records indicate Karen Davidson replaced Aaron as manager of Big Ben Investments in November, just weeks after the lawsuit alleges the estate denied a claim from the firm for more money.

Aaron, Garber and the estate's attorneys couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.Separately, another Jewish group -- Areivim Philanthropic Group -- has filed a $4.8 million claim against the estate, court records indicate. William Davidson helped establish the New York City-based charity in 2007 and was one of 13 trustees who pledged $5 million apiece to the group that "funds our Jewish future" through educational grants, according to a complaint against the estate, Aaron and Garber. The complaint alleges Davidson donated $200,000 before the estate severed funding. "Bill Davidson helped set this (Areivim) up -- it was his dream," said attorney Henry Baskin, who filed the claim. Aaron and Garber denied the request in October, stating "there is no supporting documentation to establish the claim," according to court papers. Layne said: "He (Davidson) was a man of his word and would honor this clear, unequivocal commitment." He wouldn't address claims from sources that Karen Davidson is seeking a buyer for the Detroit Pistons. Attorney Oscar Feldman, who sold his minority stake in the franchise in October, said he's heard that she is interested in selling. "It's not confirmed," said Feldman. "It's the word around town."

Wings, Pistons must unite
They've been wary adversaries for years, competing for some of the same fans, the same arena events, the same dollars. But times change and necessities rise, and a new reality should dawn here.Yes, more than ever, the Pistons and Red Wings need each other. Finally, there should be mutual motivation and benefits between the storied franchises. The answer makes perfect economic sense: The Wings and Pistons need to finance and share a new arena in downtown Detroit. Oh, it will take a few years and a lot of cajoling, but I believe it has to happen. Wings owner Mike Ilitch certainly doesn't want to leave Detroit, where he has invested so much, financially and emotionally. But 31-year-old Joe Louis Arena has aged beyond reasonable repair, and the team's lease is up June 30. And, there's a basketball team 30 miles north also facing an uncertain future, and perhaps offering solutions.

The Pistons likely will be for sale after Karen Davidson and others sort through her husband's estate. Former owner Bill Davidson, who passed away last March, built a tremendous and isolated empire in Auburn Hills. A new owner will face a new challenge, as the team and the 22-year-old Palace (still in fine shape, by the way) suffer in a shattered economy. The truth is, having separate arenas for the Wings and Pistons isn't nearly as economically feasible as it once was, a luxury few major cities enjoy. The only metropolitan areas in the U.S. that host NHL and NBA teams in separate buildings are Phoenix, the Minneapolis area, the Miami area and the Newark, N.J., area. The answer here seems simple, but is fraught with complications. If Bill Davidson were still alive, this would not even be discussed. But Ilitch is 80 and loves big moves, and this could be a chance to seal an already-amazing legacy.

For it to happen, clustering all four Detroit pro teams downtown, Ilitch would have to take the aggressive lead. Could he afford to buy the Pistons if he even wanted to? Maybe not, although he could consider selling the Tigers and making the business decision to go all-in with one gleaming arena for the Wings and Pistons near his many downtown properties. That's an intriguing long-term, long shot vision. Even in the short term, Ilitch needs to find a place and a plan for the Wings. An extension of the Joe Louis Arena lease is possible, and so is a deal to play for a couple years in Auburn Hills.

Downtown calling
As The News reported, there have been discussions between the Ilitches and Pistons officials about the Wings playing at The Palace while a new arena is built. That would be a huge conciliatory step for the franchises, which long have battled for attention. TV ratings and sellout streaks often were compared, and sometimes it would get as petty as the teams declining to show the other's playoff scores on their scoreboards. But times are tough and the population has shrunk and seats are harder to fill. If Ilitch wants a new arena -- yes, he needs it, given the Joe's shabby shape -- I'm betting he'll require investing help. The question is, what would a prospective Pistons owner gain?

The new owner could keep The Palace as a first-rate concert venue, while taking the team to Detroit. Most NBA teams play in urban settings, and the Pistons could tap into a broader market in a centralized location. Having covered games in every major city in America, I can tell you there's a more-energetic vibe around a downtown venue. Fans in northern Oakland County might not make the trek, but others could be gained. A dual-purpose facility, with 82 guaranteed regular-season home dates (41 for each), could be a major boost -- as it is, the biggest consistent draws in Detroit are Wings, Lions and Tigers games. And remember, Ilitch and the Ford family worked together to ensure Comerica Park and Ford Field were compatible, built side-by-side. I might be connecting disconnected dots here, but I think another cooperative deal makes sense. Even Detroit's sharp mayor, Dave Bing, is a former NBA star who understands the lure of sports.

Of course, much is contingent on the Pistons officially being for sale, and the right person buying them, hopefully a local person. Maybe a wealthy Michigan businessman -- Peter Karmanos, Roger Penske -- would be interested. Maybe Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert would renew his interest in the Tigers, freeing Ilitch to pursue the Pistons. Much is speculative now, but it won't be long before harsh realities set in. The Pistons and Wings have played the game brilliantly for years, but the game has changed. For the good of the area and for their own economic viability, they need to learn from each other, and yes, lean on each other.

Fans remember Rasheed Wallace fondly
Some Pistons fans said they've forgiven Rasheed Wallace for the technicals and wild antics that ushered his exit from Detroit. They want to remember the guy who was a key to the 2004 NBA championship run. "I would cheer him," Kevin Lewis of Detroit said. "He's still a Piston, and I am riding my man out."Wallace still might be a Piston to some fans, but he comes to The Palace tonight wearing Celtics green. Wallace, who will play his second game since returning from a foot injury, is expected to start in place of injured Kevin Garnett. Wallace had started seven games for the Celtics and is averaging 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. He has a league-leading 11 technicals. Pistons president Joe Dumars is happy there seems to be a softening from fans. If Chauncey Billups can return to cheers, then so should Wallace, Dumars said. "Every one of those guys who come back deserves an ovation," Dumars said. "They were part of a great run ... We would not have been champions without (Wallace)."

Said Danny Fayne of Sterling Heights: "I think everybody misses those days." Wallace played five seasons for Detroit, averaging 13.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Detroit reached the Eastern Conference finals each season before being swept in the first round of the playoffs by Cleveland last season. It marked the end of the 'Sheed era. And some were happy to see him go because of his behavior. Wallace often lost focus because of his displeasure with officials and frustration with losing. "When he came here I was excited," Fayne said. "Then after 2007, all of the technical fouls and all that hurt the team." Ben Wallace, for one, is excited about playing against Wallace. "It will make for some good and exciting basketball," Ben Wallace said. "Since he is one of those guys who has never fouled anybody since he got into the league."

The Wallaces provided great communication to one of the top defenses in the league. "He's one of those guys who leads by example," Ben Wallace said. "He's always talking and telling guys where they need to be and he keeps you on the right page." Dumars also realized how important Rasheed Wallace was to the team's success. "He not only was the final piece, but he was the key piece for us getting to the Finals," Dumars said. "We needed his personality and skill set. That brass swagger. That whole us-against-the-world mentality he brought. The team needed something exactly like that." Did Dumars get tired of the antics at the end? "Only because we weren't winning," he said. "He was no different."

Slow starts add to Pistons' struggles
Defense must be tougher in first half. In addition to injuries, the Pistons have suffered bad starts.Entering tonight's game against Rasheed Wallace and the Boston Celtics, the Pistons have allowed 50 points or more in the first half in nine of their past 14 games.

The slow defensive starts haven't helped the Pistons' struggles. Monday's game was a microcosm of the problems. Already shorthanded against the Knicks, Detroit allowed 57 points in the first half. "The thing we need to do is a better job of locking into what we want to get done defensively early on," coach John Kuester said. "One of the things we're starting to settle in on is -- when we've had that run during our three-game winning streak -- we did play better defense during that time. That's going to be a key: to be able to sustain it for 48 minutes. "Even when certain teams scored on us, we had energy and we stayed within our assignments and concepts of what we wanted to do. Even though the New Orleans game was a high-scoring game, we defended well."

In the third quarter of Monday's loss, the Pistons allowed 11 points, then gave up 31 in the fourth.
