Nets fire Frank (UPDATE)
The Nets have fired coached Lawrence Frank effective immediately after an 0-16 start that put the team on the brink of the NBA record for season-opening futility. Assistant coach Tom Barrise will coach the team Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.
UPDATE: Barrise, a 13-year veteran of the staff, was assuming the interim position for Sunday night's game, pending Thorn's decision on who will be handed the reins for the rest of the season. Within the organization, Thorn is considering Barrise, assistant coach John Loyer, added to the staff in September after Brian Hill left for the Pistons, and assistant GM Kiki Vandeweghe. According to a source, Thorn also has interviewed at least one person outside the organization. But with the team mired in an epic crisis, and with the proposed sale of the team to Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov to be decided by the end of the calendar year, it is clear to all candidates that this is an interim situation only. The Nets' brass will hunker down in day-long organizational meetings Monday, and a source said Frank's replacement will be installed in time for the team's next practice on Tuesday.

Charlie Villanueva suffers broken nose
Villanueva suffered a broken nose with 9:30 left when he was fouled by the Hawks’ Zaza Pachulia on a drive to the basket. As he was falling his face appeared to hit near the hip of teammate Ben Wallace.
His nose started bleeding profusely and a time-out was taken. Pistons personnel was able to slow the bleeding just enough so Villanueva could make the two free throws. He then went to the locker room and never returned.

Hawes Questionable, Thompson Probable
Center Spencer Hawes (bruised right knee) is questionable for tonight's game against New Orleans. Forward Jason Thompson (bruised lower back) is probable. Neither practiced Saturday.
Hawes was hurt when he bumped knees with a Net on Friday night. Thompson hurt his back when he was fouled by Nets center Brook Lopez on an attempted dunk and landed hard on the floor.

Prince Patient in Recovery; No Timetable
Some days are good and some days are filled with pain for injured Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince. But he won't even think about returning to the lineup until he begins putting together consecutive pain-free days. Prince has been out four weeks because of a ruptured disk and said there is no timetable to return. "We did not talk about it," Prince said. "Nobody has talked about it. It is a situation where they are putting me in position to feel good in consecutive days, rather than being up and down."
Prince took extensive shooting practice before the Pistons' game against the Los Angeles Clippers Friday. He is beginning to work out but has not scrimmaged or practiced with the team. Prince said his straight-line movement is good but lateral movement and pushing off sometimes causes pain.
He said he is taking one step at a time and adding to his workouts each day. "It is a situation where (the injury) can keep coming back," Prince said. "This is definitely a situation where I have to take my time, and it is frustrating because the team is not doing well right now and you want to jump out there and help them. At the same time, you have to be patient."

J O'Neal May Miss Games With Family Issue
Center Jermaine O'Neal said the delicate balance between team and family could take him away from the Miami Heat in coming days.
O'Neal, who rushed back from a family emergency in South Carolina to make it to Friday's game against the Washington Wizards just over two hours before tipoff, said the situation with his seriously ill uncle could have him back in Columbia in coming days. "It could be a situation where it could take me away from the team," he said after Saturday's practice at AmericanAirlines Arena, as the Heat prepared for Sunday's game against the visiting Boston Celtics.
O'Neal's circumstances are compounded by the Heat leaving Monday morning for Portland, Ore., where a four-game western swing begins with Tuesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. "We're going to take it day by day," O'Neal said. "I'm going to try to stay here as long as I can and do my job, and, if needed, go back to South Carolina and be with my family."

Aaron Brooks scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half, Carl Landry had 21 points and 10 rebounds after replacing injured Luis Scola and the Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-91 on Sunday night.
Already without All-Stars Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, the Rockets lost Scola 22 seconds into the game when he was poked in the right eye by Oklahoma City's Etan Thomas.
Kevin Durant scored 25 points to lead Oklahoma City, which committed 20 turnovers and went just 1-for-15 from 3-point range. Russell Westbrook had 20 points and Jeff Green scored 12 for the Thunder.

Duncan led San Antonio in scoring for the sixth time in eight games with 22 points, and the Spurs beat the Sixers 97-89 on Sunday night to extend their longest winning streak since pulling themselves out of a similar early slump last December.
Andre Iguodala had 21 points for the Sixers and Willie Green added 17. Philadelphia has lost five straight on the road with three games left on this trip, which continues Monday at Southwest division-leading Dallas.
Tony Parker and Matt Bonner scored 16 points apiece for San Antonio. The Spurs have been on a roll since a skid of three straight losses dropped them to 4-6, their worst 10-game start in the Duncan era.

"At first I didn't think it was that bad. I'd seen some blood and I'd seen a cut, but you never know how bad it was. To come in here and he looks like Captain Hook, you kind of feel bad for him," said Brooks, who scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half. "So, I hope he gets back, and we had to pull it out for him."
Kevin Durant scored 25 points to lead Oklahoma City, who had just nine healthy players with starting center Nenad Krstic out with a sore Achilles tendon on his left foot. Russell Westbrook had 20 points and Jeff Green scored 12 for the Thunder, who committed 20 turnovers and went just 1-for-15 from 3-point range.
Trevor Ariza added 17 points and reserve David Andersen had 12 points and eight rebounds for Houston.

Ryan Gomes scored 27 points, the most by a Timberwolves player this season, and Minnesota snapped a 15-game losing streak by beating the Denver Nuggets 106-100 Sunday night.
Corey Brewer and Jonny Flynn each scored 16 points in helping Minnesota rally from 17 points down in the first half and register their first win since a season-opening victory against New Jersey. It was also their first road win of the season.
Carmelo Anthony matched a season-high with 19 points in the first quarter and finished with 32 but could not prevent Denver's first loss to Minnesota in the last 11 meetings. The defeat ended the Nuggets' regular season home winning streak at 17 games.

The New Jersey Nets matched the worst start to an NBA season with their 17th straight loss Sunday night, with Kobe Bryant scoring 30 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 106-87 victory.
Falling behind by 27 points in the first half despite clearly playing hard for temporary head coach Tom Barrise, the Nets matched the starts of the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.
New Jersey must beat the Dallas Mavericks back home in the East Rutherford swamp on Wednesday night to avoid sole possession of an embarrassing NBA record.

Jerebko shines on defense
Pistons rookie forward Jonas Jerebko made the defensive play of the game with less than 2 minutes remaining.
The Hawks had scored five consecutive points to pull within six of the Pistons when Jerebko found himself as the only defender during a two-on-one break for the Hawks. Not only did Jerebko get a hand on a pass between the two Atlanta players, he came up with the ball. “How big was that?” Kuester said. “I was yellling at him because I didn’t know if he was aware that there was somebody behind him. He jabbed at him, then came back and did a great job of getting a deflection and then coming up with the basketball.”
Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey scored on the next possession to increase the lead to 89-81, and the Pistons held on from there. “I just heard everybody screaming,” Jerebko said. “I was going to foul him, to be honest, but then he was looking for the pass. I just got a hand on it and hunted down the ball.”
