No Tay, no Ben Gordon, no Will Bynum ... Chris Wilcox is iffy with his back. Rip Hamilton will be back. Tip at 7:30 vs. Boston, FS Detroit

Blake Griffin Undergoes Successful Surgery
Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin underwent successful surgery on his left knee Wednesday morning at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Center in Los Angeles.
The two-part procedure, specifically termed a left patellar fragment excision and a patellar tendon repair “couldn’t have gone better” according to Dr. Neal ElAttrache who performed the surgery. Dr. ElAttrache was assisted by Dr. Steven Shimoyama, the Clippers’ Team Physician. Dr. ElAttrache went on to say “the expectation is that Blake will undergo a sequential rehabilitation program that should have him back in action in four to six months.”
Authorized medical personnel will be available to address the news media at STAPLES Center prior to this evening’s Clippers-Bulls game, at 5:30 PM in the Avengers locker room.

Boston Celtics @ Detroit Pistons: Kevin Garnett isn't quite ready to return yet, and the Celtics have struggled without him. Tayshaun Prince, Will Bynum, Rip Hamilton and Ben Gordon are all at least questionable for Detroit.

Joe Alexander Heads to D-League: When the Milwaukee Bucks declined to pick up second-year swingman Joe Alexander's third-year option on his rookie scale contract as a 2008 lottery pick last fall, he became the highest drafted player ever to have that happen. Since then he has battled some injuries – namely a hamstring injury – and hasn't played yet this season.
Now he's finally healthy…and he still won't be playing. Apparently the Bucks are so done with him, so fed up with the whole situation, they are sending him the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the D-League – and he may never see a Bucks jersey again. "Don't expect him back in Milwaukee," tweeted the Bucks beat writer for the Journal-Sentinel, Gery Woelfel. Ouch. Not only do the Bucks not see fit to pay him beyond this season, but they have pretty much exiled him. So why even keep him around? Until the trade deadline goes there is still a possibility they could move him in trade, if another team is interested in his $2.6 million expiring contract and is willing to give the Bucks something they want. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Bucks just waive Alexander if the trade deadline comes and goes with no movement.
Still, someone is happy to have him. "He hasn't played in a while," Mad Ants coach Joey Meyer told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. "I talked to the Bucks, and we're going to work him in gradually and see how he fits. Obviously he has a lot of talent, since he was picked in the draft. Hopefully we can get him healthy and he can contribute." Hopefully Alexander gets a second shot at a professional career and takes advantage – it would be nice to see this story have a positive ending.

Game Thread 41: Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons
Tip: 7:30 p.m., FSN Detroit
Probable Starters: BOS - G: Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo; F: Paul Pierce, Rasheed Wallace; C: Kendrick Perkins
DET - G: Rip Hamilton, Rodney Stuckey; F: Jonas Jerebko, Chris Wilcox; C: Ben Wallace.
Notes: Rasheed Wallace returns to the Palace for the first time since leaving in free agency to sign with the Boston Celtics. He'll be in the starting lineup as Kevin Garnett continues to deal with a knee injury. Boston, 27-12, comes into the game with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference, but have struggled as of late. They've lost two straight and six of their last ten games. The Celtics come in running a very efficient offense. They lead the NBA in field goal percentage, shooting 48.8 percent from the floor. The high shooting percentage can probably be linked to the team's excellent ball movement. They are second in the NBA in assists, behind only Utah, and nearly 64 percent of their makes from the field are assisted. These stats don't bode well for a Piston team that has struggled to limit their opponents effectiveness on the offensive end. Detroit ranks toward the bottom of the NBA, allowing opponents to shoot at a 47.2 percent clip.
Last meeting: You have to go back to March of last season, when the Pistons topped the Celtics, 105-95. Richard Hamilton led the way with 25 points, nine assists and six rebounds.

Pistons will be down 3 players vs. Celtics
The Detroit Pistons will be without three key players against the Boston Celtics.
Tayshaun Prince (knee), Ben Gordon (groin) and Will Bynum (ankle) will not play tonight — the fifth game in a row all three have been out. Bynum now has missed 10 straight games, while Gordon has only played in 25 of Detroit’s 41 games, and Prince has been in active in just nine.
Kevin Garnett (knee) will miss his 11th game of the season for Boston, but Celtics coach Doc Rivers said that Garnett looked “fantastic” in Tuesday’s practice and could play Friday against Portland.

Karen Davidson confirms she's looking into selling Pistons
Karen Davidson confirmed today that she is pursuing a sale of the Detroit Pistons. "I'm pleased, as noted by Oscar Feldman, that the limited partners concur in my decision into inquiring about selling the team," Davidson said in a released statement through Marx Layne & Company.
Feldman, a former minority owner of the team, told Crain's Detroit Business for a story Tuesday that she is attempting to sell the team.
Davidson assumed control of the franchise after the death of her husband, Bill, last year.

Game tips at 7:30 pm ET (note: NBA League Pass is Offering a Free Trial through January 24)
Detroit Pistons: 14-26 (10-9 home, -4.9 margin)
Boston Celtics: 27-12 (16-5 road, +6.4 margin)
Oppo Research
It looks as though Rasheed Wallace will be starting in his much-anticipated return to the Palace. He is filling in for an injured Kevin Garnett, but has been hobbling himself... So look for him to shoot a lot of three pointers, mouth off at the refs, and miss defensive assignments. Even without Garnett, the Celtics match up pretty well against Detroit. Rajon Rondo is have an all-star season, and has become an integral part of the offense to match his outstanding defense. Paul Pierce is averaging 20.1 ppg for the month of January, and his outstanding three-point shooting (47% for the season) is helping to offset Ray Allen's struggles (35%) from the arc. One has to think regression to the mean is in order for both players. We know what to expect from this team. On defense, they play tough and physical, though without Garnett, they certainly lose a bit of their edge (they have only held New Jersey to fewer than 90 points in his absence). On offense, Rondo is taking a more aggressive role, no longer relying on teams forgetting that he is on the court, though Paul Pierce is still the go-to guy. Up front, expect a bit more from Kendrick Perkins, who has buffeted from Garnett's absence (14 and 10 on 63% shooting), who DOES still benefit from being forgotten on the offensive end.
The Drama
This is an opportunity for the Pistons to pick up a win off a hobbled Celtics team that has lost 7 of its last 11, and you have to know Ben Wallace is amped. What's the over/under on technical fouls for the game? I say four.
Keys for Detroit
Man up on Perkins - He's the kind of player who has been eating us alive lately.
Distract Charlie V. while Rasheed is in the game - We don't want him to reinforce bad habits.
Challenge the mid-range game - The Celtics are relying on a somewhat overrated long-range game to spread defenses, leading to a blistering 53% on two-pointers while ALSO getting to the free throw stripe.
Question of the Game
At home against a team missing its best player. These are the games you have to win to stay in the playoff chase. That said, Detroit will be without Ben Gordon, Tayshaun Prince and Will Bynum yet again.

Outlook
Rasheed Wallace returns to The Palace tonight, and I hope he gets a loud ovation. He wasn’t perfect here, but Chauncey Billups wasn’t either – and there was no doubt he’d be cheered.
Jamie Samuelson and Rob Otto chime in on Wallace’s legacy.
Richard Hamilton will play tonight, according to Chris Iott of MLive.com. Ben Gordon, Tayshaun Prince and Will Bynum are out. Chris Wilcox is questionable.
The Pistons begin a six-game home stand tonight, and this is a great opportunity to make up ground in the playoff race.
I won’t be around, but check out Daily Dime Live to chat during the game.

Jamal Crawford scored 20 points to lead a strong effort by Atlanta's backups, and the Hawks bounced back from a sluggish start to beat the Sacramento Kings 108-97 on Wednesday night.
Crawford, perhaps the NBA's top sixth man, led the Hawks in scoring for the 14th time this season, also knocking down the 22nd four-point play of his career. Maurice Evans had several big plays, as well, during the decisive third quarter as the Hawks pulled away to hand the Kings their fifth straight loss and 10th in 11 games.
Tyreke Evans led Sacramento with 24 points, and Kevin Martin added 23.
