• Rookie Jonas Jerebko is rising up the depth chart quickly. When Tayshaun Prince missed a preseason game due to an injured toe, it was Jerebko who earned the start over Austin Daye, Chris Wilcox, and Jason Maxiell. Here’s what I wrote about Jonas back in July:

“(The Pistons) selected my favorite international player in this draft, not named Rubio. Jonas Jerebko may wait a year overseas, but I don’t think he needs to. His game is already advanced and will only get better against NBA competition. At 6-9 and equipped with an advanced defensive game, he can play either forward position. He showed well for his team in last season’s Italian league semi-finals, and impressed everyone with his intangibles and basketball IQ at the Reebok Eurocamp. His activity level, size, and skill set paints him as an ideal role-player in the NBA. He does need to work on his ball-handling and pull-up jump shot, but there’s a lot to like about his game. I’m hoping we see him in a Pistons uniform next season.”

• Bill Simmons of ESPN.com named Joe Dumars his 29th most intriguing person of the upcoming season. Here’s what Bill had to say:

“I was rooting for Detroit to bring Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon off the bench this season, just so I could make the “any time you can pay $94 million and lock up your cap space for two bench guys, you gotta do it” joke. But the Pistons foiled me by starting Villanueva. Still, they dumped Chauncey Billups and effectively tanked last season for cap flexibility; now that flexibility is gone, only they look like a mortal lock for the lottery. (You realize their “big men” are The Artist Formely Known As Ben Wallace, Kwame Brown, Villanueva and Chris Wilcox, right?) And this was a good plan … how? Some day you’ll have to explain this whole “Joe Dumars is a good GM” thing to me.”

http://www.freep.com/article/20091026/S ... ng-defense

Hard to see Pistons playing defense
The Pistons have said all the right things about staying committed to playing defense. Do you think the roster is capable of doing it though?

There are three types of great defensive players in basketball.
1. The all-around player who is so competitive that he not only wants to destroy you offensively, but he wants to prevent you from scoring every time on defense, too. Examples – Jordan, Kobe, KG.
2. The player who is so limited in one area of his game that he completely dedicates himself to the other parts of the game that only require hustle and heart. Examples – Ben Wallace (circa 2004), Bruce Bowen, Mark Eaton
3. Players on good defensive teams who instinctively raise their games to fit in with the players around them so that as a team, they are a collective force. Examples – Chauncey Billups, Dwyane Wade.

By my count, after an exhaustive look at the Pistons roster, they have a grand total of one of these players. And that may be being generous. Look up and down the roster and what are each of these guys known for – offense. Rip – offense. Ben Gordon – scoring in bunches. Charlie Villaneuva – scoring and rebounding, but certainly not a commanding presence down low. So basically we’re left with Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince. I come here not to bury Wallace, but I think my feelings on him are clear. In his prime, a defensive force. But his prime ended right about the time the sub-prime crisis began. Maybe he’ll be a leader and advisor on this team, but he won’t be a defender. So then we have Prince, who’s defensive legacy has long been debated. He rose to prominence here in Detroit by being a McGrady-stopper, which I always thought was a gross exaggeration. He is not a stopper by any means. But against players like McGrady in his prime (there’s that word again) or LeBron or Kobe, there’s no such thing. Prince still does a lot of things well and is long enough to defend almost any position on the floor. He’s a fine defensive player but not a difference maker. He’s not good enough to stop any of the superstars in this league. And his defensive presence isn’t enough to rub off on the other offensive players to turn this into a defense-first team.I talked with Villanueva last week and asked him if we should prepare ourselves for some 132-129 games this season and he laughed and said no, it’s defense first. But I don’t see it. The identity of these players are all offensive, and I mean “offensive” in a good way. Because of that, I think the defense sometimes this season will be offensive, and I mean “offensive” in a bad way.

D4L's NBA Predictions
Ok, so I kinda completely stole this idea from Kevin over at Detroit Bad Boys, but we’re bloggers. It’s what we do.

Since the NBA season kicks off tomorrow night, I’ve made my predictions on everything important, and some things not so important around the league.

League MVP: LeBron James. As much as I hate to say it, the dude is amazing. Nobody in the world can guard him. He’s virtually unstoppable when he drives to the basket and his shooting touch is improving every year.

Close cuts: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Brandon Roy

Eastern Conference Champion: Boston Celtics. Yeah, the Cavs got Shaq. Yeah, the Magic are the reigning East champs. I’m still taking Boston. You can’t count out the guy so intense he makes his teammates cry.

Other finalist: Cleveland Cavaliers

Coach of the Year: Paul Westphal, Sacramento Kings. 90% of the time this award doesn't go to the best coach in the league, but instead the dude that just gets lucky and his team has a good year. Westphal, you better win because I put 10 grand on you in Atlantic City.

Close cuts: Eddie Jordan (76ers), Scott Brooks (Thunder)

6th Man of the Year: Manu Ginobli. The NBA's Hispanic marketing campaign pretty much tanked when Ricky Rubio decided to go back to Spain, so they're relying on guys like Gilbert Arenas to fill the void. What does that have to do with this award? Nothing, except Ginobli speaks Spanish or something.

Worst coach: Byron Scott, New Orleans Hornets. Ok, so the league won't actually give out this award because whoever wins it will be unemployed by the end of the season anyway. Scott is actually a decent coach and has one of the best players in the League in Chris Paul. The rest of that roster screams lottery pick.

Close cuts: Larry Brown (Bobcats), Jim O'Brien (Pacers)

Best dunk: Blake Griffin dunks on Glen "Big Baby" Davis in the Clippers' lone visit to Boston. Griffin shatters the glass and leaves dents in the floor while ripping off his uniform to reveal a Superman logo cattle-branded on his chest. Davis cries off to the locker room. Big Baby retires the next day and is later seen singing Broadway hits in the streets of Boston. Either that, or he gets an analyst job with ESPN. Vegas is giving 5-1 odds on the latter.

Pistons' MVP: Ben Gordon. He might not even start this year, but I think Gordon is going to have as big of an impact as any on how well the Pistons do this season. When he's on, he can light up any team in the NBA. His success in Detroit will be based on his commitment to improving his defense while still stretching defenses on the offensive end.

Pistons' Most Improved Player: Chris Wilcox. I don't want to call a Piston the "worst player" on the team, so I'm making this award legit. I think Wilcox will have a breakout year. He might not light up the stat sheet, but I think he'll be a key piece to this team by season's end under the tutelage of Kuester and Ben Wallace.

Pistons' Record: 42-40. I definitely think this team will improve off of last year's record. They are more talented and better coached than the 2008 version. However, this team is very young, which could cost them some games. Also, the rest of the Eastern conference is improving as well. That talent could spell danger for the Pistons' playoff hopes.

NBA Champion: San Antonio Spurs. Gregg Popovich is the second craziest coach in the NBA (behind fit-for-a-strait-jacket Don Nelson), but the man knows how to win. That, and Antonio McDyess is the classiest player ever to not win a ring. If the Pistons don't win it all, I'm definitely pulling the Spurs this season.

NBA teams hope new faces yield different results
Where they'll finish
Eastern Conference
Central Division
• Cleveland:Shaquille O'Neal says his goal is to make sure LeBron James secures his first championship.
• Chicago: The loss of Ben Gordon (Detroit) will hurt, but there's still plenty to like.
Detroit: The Pistons will be able to score points. Can they stop people?
• Milwaukee: Draft pick Brandon Jennings looked superb during the exhibition season, but team has weaknesses offensively and defensively.
• Indiana: A team with a lot of holes. No wonder rumors have surfaced president Larry Bird will retire after season.

Players to watch
• Shaquille O'Neal, Cleveland: He's won a championship with Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles) and Dwyane Wade (Miami), and looks intent on helping LeBron James get his ring. If O'Neal remains healthy, there's a good chance Cleveland will rock in June.
• Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers: Simply, Artest isn't one of the most stable individuals. That's known. Everyone will be tuned in to see whether he upsets the delicate balance of the champion Lakers.
• Brandon Roy, Portland: You've heard of him, but probably never seen him. But trust us, Roy is one
of the best players in the league and a good guy.
• Derrick Rose, Chicago: His rookie season was remarkable and many feel this kid is going to become a big-time player quickly.
• Dwyane Wade, Miami: It'll be interesting to watch how Wade handles the question -- Stay or go? The Heat have a good cast around him, but not great.
