Kirilenko returned from an ankle injury to spark a key fourth-quarter run and help the Utah Jazz beat the Memphis Grizzlies 117-99 Tuesday night. C.J. Miles scored 24 points and Deron Williams had 20 points and 15 assists.

But Williams rallied the Jazz to a 56-all tie at halftime and the Jazz never trailed again. Ronnie Brewer scored 17 of his 19 points in the first two quarters to help the Jazz keep pace.

The Grizzlies outrebounded the Jazz, 41-37, and had more points in the paint but could not overcome their 19 turnovers which led to 26 Jazz points. Many of the miscues come with Kirilenko's defense and long arms interrupting the Memphis offense.

Pau Gasol had 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists and the Los Angeles Lakers emerged from the All-Star break with a 96-83 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Lamar Odom had 15 points and 20 rebounds, Derek Fisher scored 14 points, and Trevor Ariza and Jordan Farmar added 10 points each to go with Gasol's third career triple-double on a night when Kobe Bryant scored a season-low 10 points.

All-Star Joe Johnson scored 14 points and Josh Smith added 13 for the Hawks, who had their three-game road winning streak end on the first night of their five-game West Coast trip. Atlanta, fourth in the Eastern Conference standings, had won four of five heading into the break.

McGrady says he will have surgery
The season has been a major disappointment for Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets. It might have just gotten worse. The forward told ESPN.com's Stephen A. Smith on Tuesday that his troublesome left knee will end his season and that he will undergo microfracture surgery. McGrady's name had come up earlier Tuesday in reported trade discussions between the Rockets and New Jersey Nets. The Nets were leery of McGrady's contract and health in discussions involving Nets forward Vince Carter.

McGrady had arthroscopic surgery on the knee last May and has been slow to recover. The seven-time All-Star missed much of January trying to get the knee back in shape and had an MRI last week to try to discover why it was still bothering him. "The last couple of games, I've regressed," McGrady said during halftime of last Wednesday's game. "I've felt pain." McGrady's numbers are down across the board this season. He is the Rockets' third-leading scorer at 15.6 points per game and is averaging 4.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest. He is shooting a career-worst 39 percent from the field.

After trading for Ron Artest in the offseason to create a triple threat with McGrady and Yao Ming, the Rockets were expected to challenge for one of the top spots in the Western Conference. But all three players have missed time due to injuries and Houston sits in fifth in the conference, with only two games separating them from the eighth and final spot. Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire is an example of the tough road that comes with microfracture surgery. His procedure ultimately cost him all but three games of the 2005-06 season. He returned the next season, however, to play in 82 games and regained his All-Star form.

Hornets deal Chandler to Oklahoma City Thunder

New Orleans dealt center Tyson Chandler was dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday in a trade that brings veterans Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox to the Hornets and possible cap room.

The Hornets also got the rights to DeVon Hardin , a second-round pick in last year's draft who never signed with the Thunder.

Money matters in NBA trade talks
Teams are more concerned with clearing salary-cap space than acquiring key players. The NBA, like the rest of the country, is in a severe belt-tightening mode, which is why nobody should expect a flurry of major deals before the trade deadline Thursday. Commissioner David Stern threw a bucket of ice water on any trading frenzy during All-Star Weekend when he predicted that for the first time, the salary cap and luxury tax threshold would be decreasing the next couple years. That means salaries are going to come down. That means players who thought they were going to break the bank as free agents the next couple summers might have to lower their expectations, or even consider signing extensions with their current teams. And that means more than ever, financial concerns are going to motivate trades and non-trades more than basketball needs.

How does that impact this trade deadline? You have a lot of sellers and not too many buyers. There are a lot of teams looking to trade off big contracts but very few teams looking to take back contracts that extend past 2010. A team like New Orleans, a cash-strapped contender, traded their best big man in Tyson Chandler for two players with expiring contracts (Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith) Tuesday. Does it make them better? No, but it saves them money. Chandler will make $25.5 million the next two seasons. Teams such as New Jersey, Milwaukee and Sacramento have serious payroll issues and are trying to shed salary. Thus, you see a lot of chatter about New Jersey wanting to move Vince Carter, Milwaukee wanting to move Richard Jefferson and Sacramento wanting to move, well, just about anybody. But Carter has two years and $33 million left on his deal. Jefferson has three years and $29 million. Those players are too talented and important to give away, yet are too expensive for most teams. That said, there are some intriguing scenarios, especially for Carter. One involves the Rockets, who would send Ron Artest (expiring contract), Carl Landry and Luther Head to the Nets for Carter and Josh Boone.

Another involves the Spurs, who would send a boatload of players for Carter. One rumored package includes Roger Mason, George Hill, Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto. That's a lot of players, more than the Nets could accommodate. But one reason the Spurs can be in the conversation is Tim Duncan. In 2007, when Duncan signed an extension, he structured it so the Spurs could have some flexibility in the summer of 2010. He gave back about $3.3 million. Carter would make $17.5 million in 2010-11. As reported by the San Antonio Express-News, Carter, Duncan and Tony Parker would be on the books for about $50 million that year. That would leave them enough room to re-sign Manu Ginobili, whose contract is up after next season. That's the kind of flexibility and proactive thinking every franchise aspires to right now. Does that mean there won't be any trades made before Thursday? No. Just not as many blockbuster types as you might have hoped for.

The Suns have pulled back on their efforts to move Amare Stoudemire .

With interim coach Alvin Gentry reinstating the Suns' run-and-gun offense, it makes no sense to move him. The Suns probably would rather move Shaquille O'Neal , but that will be difficult.

Sam Cassell , traded by the Celtics to the Kings on Tuesday, is expected to be waived. You wonder if the Magic might be first in line to sign him once he clears.

By the numbers
$35M The financial windfall brought to Phoenix by All-Star Weekend
$175M The amount the NBA borrowed to supplement its credit facility, from which 15 struggling teams can borrow up to $11.66 million.
23-7 The record the Pistons must achieve the rest of the way to win 50 games for the eighth consecutive season.

Chris' top five
1. L.A. Lakers: Front court is still thin without Andrew Bynum.
2. Boston: Schedule-wise, should be smooth sailing for the Celtics.
3. Cleveland: I still don't see a championship in their future.
4. San Antonio: Surprised by their interest in Vince Carter.
5. Orlando: Seriously, they aren't going after a point guard?

Chris' bottom five
26. Minnesota: Has Kevin McHale secured the coaching job?
27. Memphis: Surprise! This team is showing signs of a pulse.
28. L.A. Clippers: Call it the curse of Elgin Baylor.
29. Sacramento: Losing games and money at brisk pace.
30. Washington: Trading Caron Butler would be a mistake.

Pistons tip their cap to NBA
Pistons have faded this season, but Dumars will have enviable cap space beginning this summer. You aren't going to want to hear this. You might not want to even believe it: The Pistons have placed themselves in an envious position in the NBA.Yes, they are struggling through a transition season on the court. Yes, they have as good a chance of not making the playoffs as they do getting a home court playoff spot in the first round. Their string of seven straight 50-win seasons is in jeopardy, as is their run of six straight conference finals appearances. But what the Pistons have that others covet is financial flexibility. What they have is the ability to restructure an aging team without giving up talented players.

If the New Orleans Hornets had that kind of flexibility, they wouldn't have had to peddle Tyson Chandler. If the Phoenix Suns had it, they wouldn't have shopped Amare Stoudemire or Shaquille O'Neal like they did the past couple of weeks. At a time when commissioner David Stern is predicting the salary cap and luxury tax threshold will decrease over the next couple of years, the Pistons could have more than $20 million to spend on free agents beginning this summer.

To protect it, Pistons president Joe Dumars isn't likely to make any major deals before the trade deadline Thursday. "The only way you would mess with the flexibility we've given ourselves is if we felt we could get a big-time impact player, a proven difference-maker," Dumars said.

No perfect fit
That type of player has not been made available to the Pistons, at least not as of Tuesday. The Suns have apparently decided not to trade Stoudemire, a player in whom the Pistons were interested. But Dumars was wary of trading for Stoudemire because his contract expires after next season. As Dumars told the team's Web site: "You don't want a difference-maker for one year. You've given up your cap flexibility, you've given up your space, you had a difference-maker for a year, and now you have nothing. You have to have one or the other. You have to get a difference-maker and he has to be part of your core for the next four or five years, or you have to have space, where you can go out and get difference-makers and they're going to be part of your core for the next four or five years." Chris Bosh of the Raptors falls into the same category. The Pistons will have as good a chance of acquiring either of those players this summer or next. "We are still open to making a deal," Dumars told The News. "I just don't think it's going to happen."

Dumars, president of basketball operations since 2000, has been criticized by some fans and segments of the media. By trading Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson on Nov. 3, critics felt Dumars had closed the window on a successful, six-year era. Had the Pistons kept Billups and stood pat, they might have won 50 games again and possibly made another playoff run. But Dumars wasn't sure the roster was championship-caliber, and so he made a proactive but unpopular move. And now he takes his medicine, still ever confident validation will come swiftly. Iverson's $21.8 million and Rasheed Wallace's $13.7 million come off the books this summer, giving Dumars more financial leverage than any other team in the league. He has handed the keys to rookie coach Michael Curry and second-year point guard Rodney Stuckey, giving them both a full season to work through the growing pains.

Dumars envisions a high-powered backcourt (Stuckey, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince) fused with a younger and more dynamic front court (Bosh, Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer?), plus another proven scorer coming off the bench (Ben Gordon?). There aren't many NBA executives who have the courage -- or the job security -- to make such a bold move. And it could still backfire. Dumars certainly knows the risks. Having cap space doesn't guarantee that you get the players you want. But the team was going to need a makeover eventually. Dumars, true to the way he has always run this organization, chose to act now rather than react later.

Pistons drop fourth straight
Time off doesn't seem to do any good, although McDyess shines in his return to starting lineup.Evidently, the All-Star break didn't help the Pistons. They returned from their time off to lose their fourth straight, 92-86, to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. It used to be opposing teams used to hate coming to The Palace. Not anymore. Tuesday's loss was the Pistons' ninth at home since January 1. The Pistons (27-25) are 14-14 at home this season. "We're not playing great basketball," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "We have to keep getting better and keep working."

The Pistons rallied in the fourth quarter -- thanks mainly to a zone defense -- twice cutting the lead to one point. But each time, Milwaukee's Richard Jefferson (29 points) responded with three-point plays to give the Bucks a cushion. Jefferson's free throw with 47.2 seconds left gave the Bucks an 89-86 lead. The Pistons trailed 29-17 after the first quarter, in which they shot 6-for-16 (37.5 percent). The Bucks led by 17 in the second quarter before the Pistons cut the deficit to 50-37 at halftime. "I wasn't pleased with the intensity level from the start of the game," Curry said.

Allen Iverson, who had 10 points and eight assists, said: "They jumped right on us, there's no excuse for coming out and not being ready. It shouldn't take a dramatic comeback for us to win a game. The way we played the fourth quarter is the way we should have played." McDyess was superb in his return to the starting lineup with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Richard Hamilton scored 22. Ramon Sessions added 17 points, nine rebounds and 7 assists for the Bucks. The Pistons play their next seven games against teams likely to make the playoffs, with five of those games on the road. "It's definitely going to be tough," said Tayshaun Prince (10 points, eight assists, seven rebounds). "Hopefully the road will help."

McDyess adjusts nicely: Curry announced Monday McDyess would start, replacing Amir Johnson . "I know we've been struggling this year and he (Curry) came to me and asked me, would I start?" I told him, 'Yeah, whatever it takes,' " McDyess said. "I know it's already been tough this year. I don't want to make it more complicated than it already is, so it was easy for me to tell him yes."

Tuesday's starting lineup was the 11th different one the Pistons have had. None have lasted more than 13 games. "It's kind of ironic we've gone through so many lineups, trying to find one that's going to stick," McDyess said. "Hopefully, this is it. Hopefully, these last 32 games or so, this lineup makes a big difference and we get on a winning roll."
