Hamilton vents after skid grows
Worse still, the evidence continues to pile up that the Pistons are better without Iverson, and Richard Hamilton said he's done coming off the bench. The Pistons were down, 20-11, when Iverson left, eight minutes into the game. They rallied almost immediately, with Hamilton leading the way (24 points). Their energy was better, they competed harder, the offense ran smoother -- they just seemed more cohesive.

Evidence continues to pile up? They didn't immediately rally, it was the beginning of the 2nd quarter with the 2nd unit. Stuckey and Sheed also sat and Bynum/Maxiell played well, but let's just blame Iverson? Even the media is scapegoating this guy lol.

NEW ORLEANS 90, DETROIT 87
Pistons lose game, Iverson (injury) and 'Sheed (ejection)
Wallace ejected on T's, will be suspended. No Allen Iverson. No Rasheed Wallace. Sounds like the Pistons should have limped to their eighth straight loss Wednesday night, right? But they put in their best effort in weeks -- and it still wasn't good enough. Backup forward Walter Herrmann missed a three-pointer with a second left, and the Pistons (27-29) fell two games under .500 with a 90-87 loss to the Hornets. Playing most of the game without Iverson (stiff back) and most of the second half without Wallace, who was ejected after picking up his 15th and 16th technical fouls of the season, the Pistons forged an 82-82 tie with 2:51 left on Jason Maxiell's lay-in.

But the Hornets' Chris Paul (20 points, 13 assists) scored six points down the stretch, David West (30 points, 10 rebounds) added two for the Hornets' final points, and some key offensive rebounds finished the Pistons. "I thought that we played hard," said Rip Hamilton, who scored 24 points on 9-for-24 shooting. "When you're not playing as well as we have been, these losses hurt. "(Wallace's ejection) was a blow, but we told ourselves we had to dig and fight." After Maxiell tied the game, it looked like the Pistons might be able to get their first victory since before the All-Star break. That's when Paul went to work. First he hit two free throws, then a short jumper. After Antonio McDyess' three-point play, Paul got two more free throws to give the Hornets an 88-85 lead.
Hamilton answered with a short jumper, and then West hit his two free throws. The Hornets (34-22) kept possessions alive down the stretch with three offensive rebounds in the last 32 seconds. The Pistons were forced to double Paul on pick-and-rolls, and with three-point specialist Peja Stojakovic spreading the floor, it made boxing out tough.

But the Pistons still had a chance. Hamilton got the ball at the top of the key with 6.7 seconds left, drove the lane and kicked it to Herrmann for an open three-point attempt, but it was long. "We didn't finish the game off with those rebounds down the stretch," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "I thought Walt got a good look at it." McDyess had 15 points and nine rebounds. The Pistons are 0-3 on this five-game, eight-day trip and likely will be without Wallace (automatic one-game suspension by the league) when they play at Orlando on Friday night. He got his first technical after arguing with the officials over what he thought should have been an over-the-back call against the Hornets. Later, when he was called for a foul against West, he argued the call and Curry subbed in McDyess. But Wallace argued all the way to the bench and then appeared to toss a towel into the stands, signaling the end of his night with 16 points and seven rebounds. "I was disappointed," Curry said. "I tried to get him out before he got it. He's an emotional guy, but I was proud of the way he played tonight." Wallace declined comment afterward.

Hamilton not happy off bench
Rip Hamilton is trying to be the good soldier. He became the sixth man -- although he opposed it -- because he was told it would help the team. But after the Pistons fell to 4-12 with him coming off the bench after Wednesday night's 90-87 loss to the Hornets, he let everyone know that he doesn't think it's working. "The way we've been starting, is the way (Pistons coach Michael Curry) wants it," said Hamilton, who scored 24 points. "I've said I'm happy to come off the bench as long as we're winning. But we're losing. "Something's got to give. I'm all for doing whatever it takes for the team, but coming off the bench with us not winning, something's got to change."

And Wednesday night's performance favored his argument. Allen Iverson, who likely would go to the bench if Hamilton were to return to the starting lineup, left with a stiff back 8 minutes into Wednesday's game and didn't return. The Pistons were trailing, 20-11. Then they started playing some of their best basketball in weeks, moving the ball from side to side and not standing around watching Iverson probe the defense.

Backup point guard Will Bynum was forced into action, and he energized the team with four points, six assists and two steals in 15 minutes. "When he's out, everybody has to pick up their game another notch," Tayshaun Prince said. "You know for the guys that have been here, the things we do best is move the ball quickly and we feed off each other. And that's what works in our favor. That's why things were working well for us."Although the Pistons lost, they played with a looseness and joy that hasn't been seen in weeks.

IVERSON DAY-TO-DAY: Iverson is questionable for Friday night's game against the Magic.

He suffered a strained back in Tuesday night's loss at Miami, but he was able to start Wednesday night.

But after two points on 1-for-4 shooting, he went to the bench and was done for the evening.

Pierce plays with pain
Celtics All-Star forward Paul Pierce scored 20 points despite playing with a dislocated right thumb injury he suffered in the third quarter of a 93-91 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday night. Pierce said after the game that he doesn't expect a long-term problem with the thumb that was heavily wrapped afterward. "It's just sore right now, throbbing. I dislocated it a couple times. X-rays negative. It should be all right..," Pierce said. "I don't know if it really affected me. It was definitely sore. It was manageable. It's never happened to me before."

Celtics Picks Up D-League Squad In Maine
Maine's largest city was awarded a franchise in the NBA Development League on Wednesday, with the team likely being affiliated with the Boston Celtics.

Members of a Maine investment group, NBA Development League President Dan Reed and the president of the Boston Celtics were on hand for the announcement, which was made in front of the student body at Portland High School.

"I'm so excited to get this thing started I wish our games would start tomorrow," said Jon Jennings, the team's president and general manager and a former assistant coach with the Boston Celtics.

C's Scal needs more testing
Celtics forward Brian Scalabrine will have neurological testing for the second day in a row tomorrow and will miss Friday’s game against Indiana, according to team spokesman Jeff Twiss. Scalabrine recently missed nine games after suffering two concussions and caused concern again after he injured his neck when he was fouled by Denver’s Johan Petro Tuesday night. While the Celtics don’t believe Scalabrine suffered a third concussion, they have said he has concussion-like symptoms that concern them.

Jarvis Hayes got his uniform back Wednesday, despite having torn ligaments in his left thumb.

For the sixth-year pro, it was a no-brainer: "It's worth it to play," he said of the pain that will undoubtedly follow each catch. "We're trying to make the playoffs. So it's worth it. I feel I can play. It's going to be painful. I knew that going into it."

Less than two years after nobody wanted to play for the Celtics [team stats], Mikki Moore turned down Phoenix, New Orleans, Dallas, Utah and Denver to sign with them for a pro-rated portion of the veteran minimum.

The 7-footer found trying to repeat with the Celts an attractive proposition.

“That, plus my role on this team and a better opportunity, and plus that ring,” Moore said after his first workout with the club yesterday. “I’m turning 34 this year (on Nov. 4), so it doesn’t come around too much.”

NBA Will Not Suspend Smith For Hard Foul
Josh Smith will not be suspended by the NBA for the flagrant-2 foul called against him in Monday’s loss in Utah.

Smith was ejected for a flagrant-2 foul with 8:40 to play in the Hawks’ 108-89 loss to the Jazz. Smith knocked former Marist and Georgia Tech star Matt Harpring to the floor on a fast break. Harpring’s head hit the floor and he bounced up and immediately went after Smith. Both players had to be restrained by teammates and game officials.

Haslem Playing With Back Issues For HEAT
Udonis Haslem can't walk, at least not with typical ease. He has trouble with stairs. And there has been more than one occasion these past few weeks when he nearly went onto the court still wearing his omnipresent heating pad.

"Waking up in the morning? Stiff. After the game? Ice," the Heat power forward says."They gave me the option to do the MRI and all that. I turned it down."

In recent games and weeks, it could be argued that Haslem has been hurting the Heat.

The logistics behind post-game quotes
I alluded to this in my FanHouse column earlier this week, but Chris McCosky explains why so many game recaps only feature quotes from Allen Iverson: “He’s usually the only starter that makes himself available to the media in a timely manner post-game. We are beholden to deadlines. We get Michael Curry 10 minutes or so after the game ends. Then we walk into the locker room. Typically, Iverson is there waiting for us, eager to get it over with. The other players linger either on the treatment table or in the shower. Some nights we have time to wait them out. Most nights we don’t.

So, it’s not like he’s the spokesman for the team or anything like that. I talked to Rip Hamilton, who is technically the captain, about this before the game. Just to make him aware of it. Hopefully, Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince will start making themselves available sooner, but I am not holding my breath.”

Back hurting Heat's Haslem since fall in Houston
Heat's resilient forward keeps taking the court despite persistent ache. Udonis Haslem can't walk, at least not with typical ease. He has trouble with stairs. And there has been more than one occasion these past few weeks when he nearly went onto the court still wearing his omnipresent heating pad. "Waking up in the morning? Stiff. After the game? Ice," the Heat power forward says. "They gave me the option to do the MRI and all that. I turned it down."

That is not his way, including Wednesday's practice, when coach Erik Spoelstra had to force him to sit out the more intense scrimmaging. "That's just who he is," Spoelstra says.

Spoelstra says if there were concern about an injury that could grow worse, "he would be getting an MRI. But this is who he is." That doesn't mean the ailment won't eventually be addressed. It'll just have to wait until there are no more games to be played. "I'll probably see a chiropractor and get myself lined up," Haslem says. "But not now, not during the season. That was probably the toughest fall I'll ever have."
