If No Trades Happen This Year...

If Detroit Managed this off-season right, they could potentially have enough $$$ to sign two star players.
Brandon Knight
OJ Mayo/Rodney Stuckey
Josh Smith/Tayshaun Prince
Greg Monroe/Jonas Jerebko
Andre Drummond/Slava
Also add wherever Detroit's #1st round draftpick lies to this roster. More than likely it's in the top 5-10 range.
All they have to do is amnesty Villanueva and let their exprings expire and this can happen.
This team would be filthy.
Wouldn't this be a strong possibility? Could Joe honestly be saving his money for FA?

Dumars isn't going to amnesty Charlie V, that idea is ridiculous...After watching Josh Smith play a couple games this season I think he may be better suited to playing the 4...His shot isn't consistent enough to play the 3 full-time...Mayo is a possibility if we offer him 11mil per year...I don't think Cuban would match 4yr/44mil for Mayo(I wouldn't give Mayo 4yr/44mil)...

Josh Smith is not a SF. That myth needs to stop. It doesn't even work in 2K anymore.

I used to think he's a SF and I think he should've been developed there. But that's where the line ends. He's not and will not be a SF because it's just not what he learned and it'll only be a waste of time to put him there since he knows the PF position better. So regardless if you think he's a SF or not, he should not be playing there.

No thanks to OJ Mayo. Dude will look for 8 mill a year easy. I'll pass on that much for an undersized 2. Smith can't play SF. Enough of that talk. Not sure what we do. DNP-CV played his way not to being amniestied. If he isn't a Piston it will be from a buy out or trade. Teh Gordon trade looks awful as we coulda just amnesitied him at year's end and save that pick. Maggette was a wastful add if we don't trade him.

Sure it works... If every other team with $'s decides to sit on their hands.. we're not a shoe in for any F.A.s

8 mill for OJ would be a bargain. 4yrs/40mill is the minimum, Cuban will probably give him 50.

There is nothing of real value outside of Monroe, Knight, and Drummond. Those three aren't going anywhere. Prince would be worth a late first but he's staying. The expirings have small value but will Joe take on a salary to get a first rounder? Is it even worth it?

If no trades happen this year than the Gordon move looks even more terrible than it did when it went down

Agreed, if he doesn't make use of the cap room then we essentially sold a pick for straight up cash. He needs to do something...i would be happy with Smith/Mayo as additions to the team, although I would rather go after Eric Gordon/Paul Millasp. I don't think either of May nor Smith would consider signing with us though. Not a FA destination and we aren't even a playoff caliber team. I would be very surprised if Mayo doesn't stick with Dallas, they've shown him that they want him to be a focal point of their franchise.

I would prefer that we wait until the offseason to spend our money unless we can get some awesome unforeseen deal. OJ Mayo has really grown on me lately and I just love his game now. He would be the perfect fit and I hope Dumars is willing to overpay for him. Also, even though I'm still a Knight believer, I wouldn't mind going after Bledsoe instead if Knight doesn't show improvement throughout the season.

At this point, our only option is either trading for Eric Gordon, drafting a star SG (Doubtful), or overpaying for OJ Mayo. Mayo does have some point skills that could compliment Knight.
Knight/Bynum
Mayo/Singler/Daye
Chandler/Prince/Daye
Moose/CV/
Drummond/Moose/Slava
That's pretty damn balanced IMO

I don't think trading for Gordon is an option now that he seems happy and has been great for them since coming back. I think Shabazz and McLemore will go in the top 5 and I don't see us being bad enough to get one of them. Our only option is going after Mayo and I would be willing to overspend for him by quite a bit. He does everything we're missing on offense. Most of our games are close games and replacing Singler and Max with Mayo and Dre as well as an improved Knight and Monroe (hopefully...) should be more than enough for us to end up on the winning end of those close games.

You explore every possibility you can, but with patience and prudence.
In many ways trading for an All-Star (or borderline talent) is a much more viable option. It may cost you more in terms of assets, but it saves you from a FA bidding war you aren't likely to win. There is also a much larger pool of talent to draw from.
But it's all about value and finding pieces that fit. Knowing we do have FA to fall back on there is no need to force the issue.

Agreed... by going the route of trade should be less cost per talent than Free agency... at least you're sending salary back.

Outside of trading Maxiel, Bynum or Maggette, I don't see the Pistons really making any trades. Heck, they could be up to $20 mil under the cap next year. Joe D. has no need to panic when this is not a top team. I would not be surprised if there are no trades and I won't be disappointed either. This will be an interesting offseason when the team has loot to finally spend.
