Bynum

What happens to Bynum longterm?
Just a month ago it was a forgone conclusion that he would either be traded by Feb, or simply let walk in FA. But since then, he has emerged as a consistent veteran backup PG that fits perfect leading our 2nd unit. And more importantly, he seems to be Drummond's favorite player to play with - he called themselves "Batman & Robin" last night.
So if Drummond likes him, and he makes Drummond better (which he does), then don;t they kind of have to keep him? But I'm also leery of giving Bynum another ext after him turning into a selfish ballhog after his last extension. This could all just be a contract year thing. And the other thing to consider is once Drummond moves to the starting lineup full-time next year, how is Bynum going to have the same impact playing on the 2nd unit without him? I'm thinking it wil be back to the same old Bynum. So what do you think Joe does? As he's likely also pondering all these same things.

Not sure a player changes his stripes at this stage in his career... if he starts missing those shots we're back to the high volume, low % shooter we've known.
His quickness is one of his best assets but if he loses a step then we have Chuckie Atkins 2.0.
Would rather deal him while he's at his best.
That lob play should work with any PG that can get inside.

Hard to argue against Bynum right now. He's been great and has the best chemistry on the team with Drummond. I wish they'd start both of them.

Good points. I don't think Bynum has necessarily improved, rather Drummond has made his style of play feasible. For example, before Bynum would dribble all over the place and when he get stuck, he'd have to force up a bad shot. But now when that happens he can just toss up a lob to Drummond to bail him out at anytime.
So I think Bynum + Drummond can make Bynum into a different PG, but the problem is they likely won't be playing much together once Drummond is starting full-time. So if we re-sign him, we're more likely to get old Bynum than new Bynum. And I agree Drummonds lobs should be equally effective with any decent PG.
I say if we can't find any better backup PG, then see if Bynum would resign on a 1 yr deal. So we can see what we look like next year with Dre starting and Bynum leading the 2nd unit without him. Then he will be an exp contract again next year and easy to trade should we need to.
I think the most we can get for him now is a late 1st round pick from a contender, but I'm not sure the Pistons are even interested in adding more draft picks. By trading their pick this year, I think they are looking to add vets, not more role-player rookies.

People have short memory. Statistically Bynum's best year was his first year in Detroit. He only played 14 minutes a game but he had a 17.4 PER on a .520 TS and .461 eFG. He also had a 35.3 AST ratio. He was putting up a 18.4 Points and 7 assists per 36.
Those are starter caliber numbers. Hell, those are above average starter caliber numbers.
Last season was absolutely brutal for Bynum.
This season he is close to those numbers again. He is averaging 17 minutes a game, has a PER of 16 a TS of 51.2 eFG .477 and he is putting up a 17.5 and 7 per 36.
And yes Goldtop Bynum improved. He is hitting his shots with a lot more confidence and consistency, especially from 3.

Bynum will be 31 next year... would work well for a true contender... a little out of our window.

I think it's pathetic that people change their minds so quickly. First it was that we suck and we'll have the Top 5 Lottery. Daye, CV, Bynum, and plus were all mentioned to be traded because they suck. Then a couple of games more, hey let's keep Daye! Oh Bynum should start! haha. It's ridiculous really. Oh and I read about how we should trade Monroe because he's sucking. Now Knight should be traded with Bynum starting because he's so good with heavy minutes. I think it's pathetic that people keep changing their minds after a couple of games. I said we'll be going to the Playoffs this season even after our 0-8 run. Everyone was saying otherwise. I'll stick to my bet. But I'll guarantee you guys will change your mind about Knight soon. He's really good and will only get better. Monroe is our best player and Drummond is our second. There isn't anything that screams to me that Dre is better. Keep Dre on the bench at least until the All-Star break. If Frank leaves him there until next season, I won't be mad. He's obviously doing a great job developing him. I trust him.

I hope Bynum just expires and goes away to another team. He has had 2 good games in a row but plays like a huge scrub more games than not. This is just like Daye a couple weeks ago. Stop overreacting to every single thing. Jeez...

Did Langlois start a new apprenticeship?

I get what you're saying... just glad that some of these guys that fell off the radar are showing some league value... pretty sure it's gonna take more than just riding things out to becoming a contender... not holding much hope for an impact player via free agency... hence the trade talks.
It does appear that we're ahead of schedule... wouldn't be surprised to see them play above .500 for the second half of the season.

I think Bynum is playing really well with Drummond and shooters. I say shooters because it doesn't matter who it is as long as they can spot-up shoot. But here's the reality: Bynum is getting old and Drummond will eventually start. So what do you do? Simple. You trade Bynum. OR we have a player called Kravstov that does similar things to Drummond: block, finish, and jump. IMO, depending how far along they are in their development, I think we should trade Max and Maggette, start Drummond, and put Slava in Dre's role right now. This is risky which is why I said it depends on their development.
We can also ride out the season and let Max expire. Maybe sign him to a smaller contract or let him go. It doesn't matter since we have our starting big by then. But IMO, I think there are good players/picks out there that we can get by trading our expirings. It's time for Dumars to make a move.

I'd trade everyone right now outside of Drummond. The rest of the team as let me down. Knight isn't progressing. Monroe is nice but a second option and not a first. Stuckey probably should be starting which is sad because he is probably our best pure scorer at the moment.

Bynum got a raw deal here in Detroit. I hope he moves on and proves everyone wrong!

Bynum and Drummond have had this chemistry going since the pre-season. gtfo with this 2 games garbage. More like 40-50 games, which is far from an overreaction.

You know if there's a Will Bynum thread that I'll be there!
Haters are gonna hate and selective memory on the good games Bynum has had. He's won us plenty of games throughout his tenure here. Need I remind everyone, record holder points scored in the 4th quarter for Pistons. Whoever said that he used to dribble out the clock, and then go in for a bad shot doesn't watch or follow Bynum. He's the 1 PG we have had over the last 4 years that actually does the exact opposite of that. Stuckey was notorious for forcing shots in the lane and getting stuffed. Bynum puts up points, break down defenses, sets people up with sick passes. Yes, last year was a mess as another poster mentioned but I think we can safely say the entire team was pretty terrible. The biggest improvement this year for Bynum has been his 3 ball. .40% on the year hope he can maintain it and if he can, will open up the lane to work in.
ENJOY!
