Villanueva

Post#1 » by itjustdo » Sun Feb 10, 2013 1:06 pm

Charlie V hit a clutch 3-point shot to vault the Pistons to victory last night over the Bucks. (gulp).
In addition, he's been a contributing part of the Bynum-Drummond 2nd unit team that has excelled.
His PER is 16.72, the second highest mark of his career (the highest, unsurprisingly, was his last season in MIL).

It is beginning to look ever more likely that the team is NOT going to use the amnesty clause on him.

The Pistons hope that this contract is a short term, moderate dollar, and that he's playing at a high enough level that it will be more valuable to keep him around than to pay him to play somewhere else. If he can maintain this level of play, at a minimum they have a minor trade chip for a tax-heavy team looking to open up space on the books for summer 2014.

The trades of Gordon and Prince have allowed the Pistons sufficient cap flexibility and open space that using the Amnesty clause may be deemed unnecessary use of team funds.

Prepare the unprepared.

8 mil for a backup PF is still too much for someone who still is very limited at the defensiv end, but he is a good fit next to either Monroe or Drummond, if there is no better possibility around in the summer, i think they keep him too. But its good to have the amnesty as an option, if more capspace is needed.

I like CV.. I just don't like him for $8mm/yr. If he continues to play like he has been then I'd sign him again. $3.5-$4mm/yr ought to be suffice!!

He gets 8.5 mil next year. If they amnesity him, they can not resign him. I think he looks great next to Drummond as well. A stretch four is exactly what the Pistons need. I just wish CV played like this every night. He showed how good he can be when he hustles. 13 rebounds is amazing for him. Calderon showed us what it's like to have a unselfish point guard. Those lops he throws are just sick!

CV could be much better playing with Calderon. Villanueva is old enough to have come up playing systems, rather than this one and done glorified street ball stuff. With Knight, Moose, Drummond it is like the blind leading the blind. College is where you are supposed to learn the game. You can learn/teach the game at the nba level, but that's when you have 1-2 young players in your 8 man rotation.

We were never going to amnesty Charlie V, I don't know where that craziness came from...I'm happy my boy Charlie V is playing well, I always knew if we played him right he would produce(same thing to Ben Gordon)...8mil is what you pay for stretch 4's now-a-days...Lamar Kardashian=8mil, Ryan Anderson=8mil, Mr. Villanueva=8mil...

dont drink the Kool Aid, Charlie just wants to get paid. he knew coming into this season there was a good chance he'd be amnestied at the end of the year. had that happened with him being the same Charlie we've all known and loved these last few years hed either be out of the league or signed for vet minimum. now hes either in line to make 8.5 next year (I know he was getting that regardless, but that would have been the end of the gravy train)or get amnestied and have some poor franchise sign him to a nice multiyear deal after which he'll mail it in again. hes probably hoping to get amnestied at this point so he doesnt have to put in any work next year to keep his value up.

Using the amnesty on Chuck was never a realistic option. Not because of what he does on the floor, or what his value is perceived to be contractually and as a player wise, but because Gores has shown nothing of the like about spending extra money. In fact the only moves made under his tenure have been salary shedding ones. Buying out Rip, using a 1st to move BG for an expiring contract, and trading Tay for an expiring contract all saved Gores several millions of dollars.

Perhaps Gores ponies up and pays Chuck to go away, but I don't see it. Chuck may eventually hold more value in trade as a 2013 expiring contract, than the raw cap space created this summer with an amnesty anyways. Even if he sticks around for the entire 2013 season, he is no longer considered a negative (especially if Calderon is retained) as he fits the team better than ever now and his contract is no longer a concern with only the one year remaining.

He performs and he has a 1.5 season contract. He's not negative value anymore, that is enough for now. Small steps. Detroit has enough cap space for anything, amnesty won't be necessary. He'll likely have a good season next year too, to get an extention but I prefer him gone before deadline.

No reason at all to amnesty CV. Like OP said, we don't need the capspace first and foremost. But also next year his contract becomes a majot trade asset. For a team like the Pistons more likely to acquire talent via trade than FA, CV's 8 mil exp contract is more valuable than the 8 mil in capspace we'd get should we amnesty him. We've already got enough capspace to facilitate trades taking on contracts from luxury teams. Its good to have a nice sized exp contract as well.

Besides he's actually one of our best bench players and fits a much needed role on this team, so might as well just keep him until next year.

CV reminds me of myself during university. Never used to do any work, all of a sudden an exam would be on the horizon and i'd have to work my ass off for the few weeks preceeding it.
