Will we amnesty CV?

I don't think there is an easy answer to this.

No one likes to throw away 8 million bucks, even if you are a multi-millionaire. And he might actually have some trade value next year since he will be expiring and possibly useful to a playoff team that needs a stretch 4 off the bench.

But...

Next year we will have cap space. And getting another 8mil in cap space is significant. It's not like in future years when we are over the cap and then you shave 8 mil off your payroll - you might not even be under the cap yet, or if you are, only by a few mil. But this year - we could use every penny of what we save to get a new free agent.

I'm opting to amnesty him. Just waiting for Joe to call me for advice :-)

I don't think we will, FWIW.

I don't understand why we would, he's not the big of a cap hit, he has a unique skill set, he is an expiring contract and i'd rather not waste the amnesty on him

But if we amnesty him, we would have an extra 8mil. That might be close to an OJ Mayo starting salary. Would you rather have Mayo or CV on our team?

Also, we don't necessarily have to pay CV all the 8mil - once he gets signed by someone else, we only have to pay the difference in his salary. So if he gets signed for 3mil, we only lose 5mil.

I think CV is the only player we can amnesty. Who else has a contract that is pre 2011?

For me I find the FA to sign 1st or the trade to make and then drop him. If I cant get the deal or FA I want then I keep him and use his expireing deal at the deadline later on.

I think we should, but I kinda doubt it.

No.

Unless we are going for a real superstar in the draft or via trade(which seems very unlikely at this point), there is no real reason to amnesty the guy. He has started to contribute in some fashion to this team. So, I don't really think Gores would just give money away for him to not play at all.

We ain't gonna be a free agent destination team. Gores ain't gonna eat $8M to see the guy play elsewhere. So either he's back or we trade him as an expiring next year for a longer term contract.

$8M isn't brutal if he's the 6/7th man, first big off the bench. I mean that's a little more than the MLE these days.

I've been worried that Dumars will try to re-sign Maxiell. So if it's Maxey for 3years+ or CV for one more, I'm taking the latter.

i don't think we will, makes 0 sense. The only way CV gets amnestied is if he didn't produce this year. He's been producing. Maybe not 8 mil worth of production but he's the 2nd best PF on this team. Additionally his ability to stretch the D is something that is highly valued with AD. Makes 0 sense to throw away 8 mil, to only go after a similar player on a cheaper contract. i think logically you keep him, pay him and then trade him

CV is a valuable Piston for the first time since his contract. He plays very well next to Dre and with Bynum. I highly doubt we use the amnesty on CV and allow another team to benefit from his improved play. He should've taken up boxing a LONG LONG time ago!!

No because of the floor cap.

I wish we could amnesty Jonas

Nope. There aren't enough quality free agents available that we need the cap space for.

Id rather package CV with Stuckey and hopefully Jonas and absorb some large contract around the time of next year's trade deadline

Yes if it we need to sign a guy. No if we can't get anyone to come here.

If they are both still here next season (if we don't trade Stuckey before the deadline this season), I would love this as well.

I doubt we amnesty CV.

Villanueva has been playing good as of late. I can't really see it happening. Gores has shown that he'd prefer to trade guys than use the amnesity. I also agree that using an amensity would put us well below the cap floor. I also disagree with signing Mayo. One good year doesn't make him worth a max deal. I'd rather max out Josh Smith than OJ Mayo. He's a better player period.

I guess I disagree with everyone on the logic as well as the probability of using the amnesty on CV. No problem to agree to disagree. But I'd rather pay someone who is part of our future (Mayo, Granger, whoever), than to spend another 8mil on CV. Who knows, we might even be able to trade him in a few weeks and the point is mute. But if I'm Gores/Dumars, I'm totally doing the amnesty on CV.
