Lionel Hollins

I didn't know Hollins was in the final year of his deal in Memphis. He would be an awesome fit if we could get him this summer. He's successfully employed a system around 2 true big men like we are going to need here. He's an excellent defensive coach, and his system seems tailor made for Pistons basketball. Low scoring, grind out defensive games, balanced offense with no superstars. He's got playoff experience too, and did it all without riding a superstar like Frank did in NJ.

There's some good candidates out there, who would all be upgrades over Frank, but now knowing he will be available if we do make a coaching change, I have to think Hollins might be Joe's #1 target. He just seems to fit perfectly in the mold Joe will likely be looking for.

If he does not extend with Memphis, I agree that he would be a terrific fit. The consensus here this year has been that our best shot at becoming a good team is to focus on Moose/Drummond as a tandem and Hollins would be a perfect fit for that.

yep, thats my thinking. The closest team to what we have up front is MEM, and Hollins is the one who orchestrated it all. A lot of coach's today cant seem to figure out how to use 2 true big men together effectively. Frank couldn'r figure it out. Dantoni can't in LA. Mike Brown couldn't. Whoever was coaching in PHX with Shaq/Amare, etc. For w/e reason its hard to find a coach who do it effectively today. Hollins is one who's proven he can. PLUS, he's a great defensive coach too, so its not like he's just getting it to work on one end.

Maybe Gores will open up the checkbook and overpay to get him to come here. I've never understood why owners are willing to overpay players, but always seem to want to skimp on coach's. Especially when there's a cap on how much you can spend on players, and a coach's salary doesn't count on the cap. Aside from your star #1 guy, the coach is probably the 2nd most important person on a team, yet you have owners/GM's giving scrubs $8 mil/yr with no hesitation, but they cringe at the thought of paying their coach $4-5 mil/yre. It doesn't make sense

Memphis would be foolish not to lock him up. He's one of the best coaches in the league.

No coach worth his salt will come here as long as Dumars is still here.

I want Dumars gone and then bring in a Van Gundy.

Even though Pistons fans don't appreciate or respect Dumars (unjustifiably), thats complete opposite view around the league among execs, coach's, players, owners etc.

Pistons fans treat Joe like he's Bryan Colangelo. He's still one of the most successful GMs in the league, and one of the most highly regarded.

I think they need to get a real coach in place before going into free agency, if they want FAs to take them serious. Its hard to imagine too many FAs wanting to come here to play for Frank.

If we could get Hollins, I bet we could attract Tony Allen here with him. Adding those 2 would go a long way to getting us back to bad boy real pistons basketball.

the other side of the coin is, due you really want a new coach with a new system coming in here and forcing a young team to yet again adjust, especially in a year that you need to win? also Tony allen isn't the saviour to all our problems, but i get what your conveying.

I never implied Allen was a savior. But having one of the best interior defenders in Drummond paired with maybe the best perimeter defender in Allen could and should make us one of the best defensive teams in the league next year. However we'd need a proven coach like Hollins to make it work.

And yes, if we want to win, we NEED a new coach. Frank is obviously not leading us to any winning seasons. He hasn't had a winning season as a coach since 2006. The odds of him doing it next year are slim. We need a proven winner. Hollins, SVG, or JVG would all give us a better chance to win next year than Frank.

Not to mention, the better the coach, the better you're young players will develop. The way Frank coach's I'd argue makes our players WORSE. He's teaching them this crazy system that doesn't work, and they're all probably picking up bad habits. We need a real coach to teach them how to play the right way. The sooner, the better

The Pistons had better be very careful with whoever they target next. Hollins seems great. It's evident a good coach is well worth their salary. I really don't like SVG's personality, but he also has a good resume in Miami and Orlando, and Orlando had a similar template (building around Dwight/Drummond) when SVG arrived.

Frank has made backwards progress with an improved roster and further cemented his record as one of the worst winning percent as a head coach. It's hard to understand his moves. I try to be understanding but I do wonder if he's totally crazy or over his head at times. Well, at least he has a positive attitude which makes his hard to understand moves and bad record a bit more tolerable. The guy has only been successful with Jason Kidd (i.e., a coach on the floor) surrounded by some high end talent. No wonder he seems to unduly love Calderon.

I'm sure coaches hate getting paid millions of dollars to be an NBA coach and then getting paid millions while free of a job.

Also they must loath Dumars record of success as a GM, the chance to coach Monroe/Drummond, and Dumars reputation as loyal and good character...

You can like and respect him but not want to coach for him because Dumars has a TERRIBLE track record with coaches and seemingly never backs his coaches, always choosing the player(s) over the coach.

Joe is no different than any GM. Its the same with every elite franchise. They expect you to win, or at least show progress, and if you don't then you get fired. The cases of Carlisle/Brown winning and getting fired were Davidson's decisions, not Dumars. Mr D wanted both out. And you can't argue with Curry and Kuester deserving to be fired. Nor could you argue that Frank doesn't deserve to be fired based on his time here.

I think if you're a coach looking for job, you respect a GM that holds a high standard like that. Better than a GM who stays with one coach for 5-10 yrs despite never winning. And if a coach doesn't want that pressure of having to win to keep his job, then you don't want that coach anyways.

Coaches want to coach. There are 30 available head coaching jobs at any given time and far more coaches available. We are a decent young team with 4 young players, 3 of whom have a chance to be all stars given the right coaching and development and we have a winning culture, despite our recent woes.

If you can get a coach like Hollins, you JUMP on the opportunity and don't look back...regardless of the new system they bring or the adjustment period. I'm more concerned with the quality of the coach and how their system fits our team.

I voted yes, but we need more than a real coach for this team. We need better players. That has to be our priority in the off-season.

I know this is a Hollins thread ,but I didn't see a coaching change thread must be a ways back, with the pistons about to lose their tenth game might be time to dust it off.Anyway I saw today Adelman considering retiring from minnesota, does anyone think he 'd be a good fit for us.

He's quitting the T-Wolves job because of his wife's health. Unless he's just using that an excuse to leave and take another job, he probably won't be coaching next season.

I'd imagine there will be better opportunities available for him, including returning to Memphis.
