OT: Greg Monroe may wait to sign an extension

Post#1 » by ComboGuardCity » Fri Mar 1, 2013 4:17 pm

Hopefully this kind of stuff is all agent talk but there is no way in hell I want to go through the trouble of catering to a player as a RESTRICTED free agent. If the Pistons offer him near the max this summer and he doesn't take it ship his ass out.

Would rather wait til he is unrestricted.... Saw a Lakers fan on a board saying

"We'll just sign Greg Monroe this offseason to like a 3 year 18 mil deal" :naaa: :eek1:

At least we know how valuable he is... By the way after all of his moves his payroll was 129mil, delusional Lakers fan huh?

Who would want to commit to a long term loser in an uneventful city? We better start winning some games. Additionally if Greg wants the big bucks he needs to consistently play at a high level. Many of the problems that we have had with this team are the result of his consistency

The only risk he has of not signing an extension right away is injury, which he hasent had problems with. He is probably just trying to make sure he can raise his value to near max level. He has a pass first point guard to play with and a big man in Drummond that covers his weak areas on the court. He'll stay here unless he is traded for a star.

If I were him, I'd do the same thing. Pistons are the drizzling **** - why stick around here and waste your career. Hopefully this puts pressure on Gores to fire Dumars and Frank or risk Monroe walking. Dumars blows this off-season and the franchise will be set back for another five years - Monroe shouldn't be expected to sign on and be a part of that.

Also Monroe might question his ability to play PF, so he tries it out next year. If he can't - he can walk and sign on somewhere to be their center.

The thing is though no matter how bad the team is, there is no way in hell he takes the QO and risks a career ending injury. Players for their first 7 years do not evaluate their situation because they don't really have a choice.

Moose gets max money if he wants it. GMs will spend inordinately for bigs they think they see potential in, i.e. Roy Hibbert.

Can't disagree. I think Joe gives him the max and I'm okay with it.

Moose is great, but he's not a MAX player.

Maybe he could get there if he continues to improve over the next 2 years....but I don't think he's earned a MAX paycheck just yet. I liken him to more of a guy we should look at signing to a 5/$50 million deal.

When you're not a contending playoff team & you don't have a big market, I think you give the max contract to someone like Moose, even though he hasn't earned it yet. I mean if we can keep him for less then great. But if not, throw him the max.

Well, we have two options if he does not extend with us:

1. Trade him
2. Sign him in as an RFA, matching any offer...not very pleasant negotiation wise.

I don't blame Moose for not extending, we aren't a winning team, nor are we a good destination location wise nor weather wise but if we don't trade him, then we have to match any offer, including a max offer...even if he isn't worth it. Better to have a max player that isn't worth a max contract than nothing at all when your not a big market team.

I;d rather trade him, and get younger massive assets because we are still several years away. Drummond is the future! I'd rather not overpay a non superstar. He's not a max guy.

I think that is a little high for a guy who is pretty much a one sided player. I'd be better at 5/45 in all honesty.

Monroe may or may not be a max player under the new CBA. Regardless of what some people say he has shown progress since last year. However, he needs to show more commitment on defense and a better mid range game to cement being a max big. I don't fault him for sampling the market as a RFA. He's a pro athlete and it could all end at any time.

However, all these "fans" running down the franchise can stuff it. Yeah, the Pistons have been on hard times the last several years, but how many trips to at least the ECF? Three titles and other trips to the finals. Putting the Pistons on the level of the hopeless and hapless franchises is something you'd expect from fans of other teams.

Wow, I knew this would come up sooner than later...I wouldn't mind throwing a max deal at Monroe if he can successful and consistently play the 4 position well...Hibbert tested the market and came out with a max deal, I think we all know if Monroe tested the market he'll probably receive the same blessing...

I think Dumars should wait until summer-time 2014 and offer Monroe a 5yr deal right under max money...

DetroitDon15 - I agree Drummond is the future, but I'd like to keep Greg because I think they complement each other well on the court. Their games mesh well and I think they'd be a great fit in the triangle offense or some variant.

Piston Pete - I'd love it if Greg signed with the Pistons at 5 for $50M, but I think he'll get more if he goes to FA and signs an offer sheet.

A point both of you made: Moose is not a max player.

I think it depends how you look at it. I won't argue that he's worth the full 5-year max, but I do think he's worth the 4-year max that any team could offer him as a restricted free agent, like the deal Hibbert got. Roy had his best season last year, and Greg outperformed him. Hibbert was also 25 years old to Monroe's 21. Moose will be two years younger than Roy was at the time he hit restricted free agency. Why wouldn't he get paid at least as much?

I don't think there is an argument whether or not he'll get the max. He will. For a player his age it's only 14mill. The fact that he won't sign one asap would mean he's not that excited about this franchise. That's the troubling part.

No one in here is running down the franchise. Just being realistic.
And just because our franchise has been so successful in the past doesn't mean it will have the same success in the future.
