OJ Mayo rumor

I know many of my (myself included) have had free agency fantasies about getting Mayo and Iggy in the offseason, even if we had to overpay to get them. Here is a rumor from ESPN today that strikes out Mayo from our list:

The scuttlebutt around the league was that Mayo signed a discounted deal in Dallas in order to preserve team cap space in 2013, with the understanding that he could opt out after the first year of his deal and be "rewarded."

Looks like Cuban will be throwing big dollars at Mayo and the deal is already done.

He'll be rewarded in Detroit

I don't know, Cuban will probably match anything we offer Mayo...Remember the Mavs gave him an opportunity to start when nobody was talking about him last summer...I think he stays with Dallas...

Mayo will be an UFA, correct? So they can match, but ultimately, Mayo will get to decide where he wants to go. Unlike with RFA's, players would be forced to go back to the team that matched....

Needless to say, I hope we don't go after Mayo. Hoping we get our SG of the future I the draft.

Yeah, Mayo is a UFA...But like I said, Cuban gave Mayo an opportunity when nobody seemed to show any interest(except the Suns)...If Mayo is a loyal guy and the Pistons offer 4yr/35mil deal or the Mavs offer 4yr/35mil deal, I think he'll pick the team that gave him a chance last summer...We can always over-spend and offer 4yr/55mil(April fools)...

Or Maybe the Suns push hard for him again this offseason (hoping)

Dallas can offer Mayo 5 years while everyone else can only offer him a 4 year contract.

I've also read some articles on how much Mayo credits Rick Carlisle helping him improve his game. I think he stays unless Carlisle gets fired.

I may be interpreting this wrong, but isn't this the same exact case as Joe Smith with the Timberwolves around 10 years ago? Smith took less than market value to help out the Wolves in cap space so he could get rewarded later with a big contract and the NBA ended up punishing both parties harshly. Isn't that exactly what Mayo is doing?

Dirk took less money IIRC to save space to sign other guys.
I cant see Mayo leaving Dallas.

Difference is Joe Smith's agent and the Wolves put on paper and Smith dumped his agent just as he was going to cash in on the big deal. Smith's agent ratted him out and had a paper trail to prove it. If it's a hand shake deal with no paperwork and everyone keeps their mouth shut the league can't do squat.

Adding OJ Mayo would be really nice, but I don't know if Dallas will let him go no matter what he gets paid. They're getting up there in age and Mayo is a young piece they can eventually build around.

Phoenix offered more Money than Dallas and Mayo rejected Phoenix offer because he wanted to play for Carlisle. It was posted here before so nothing new at all.

OJ Mayo as a target is pretty...ironic, at least. He has many similarities with Stuckey and Ben Gordon. Except his career numbers are well below Stuckey's. He's also a bit undersized and a good 3 point shooter, except no where as successful as Ben Gordon had been before we signed him. And he's going to cost more than Stuckey at the least, and will be in the market for something close to what Gordon got (less thanks to the new CBA I imagine).

Got to say that sounds like a terrible use of cap space and pretty hard to understand given how Stuckey and Ben Gordon went for us. Mayo's either not as good as people think or Stuckey is not as bad as people think.

I get a little nervous talking about near max $s for a player that has not proven over the years that he is a dominant 2 way player... let Cuban blow his cap.
