ComboGuardCity's OffSeason Plan

Seems like there's a trend going on where everyone post their own off season plans so here's mine:
Current Roster (after expired Contracts)
Knight/
Stuckey/English
Singler/Jerebko/Middleton
Monroe/CV
Drummond/Slava
Now: Go hard after Brian Shaw. I know you guys love the Euro coach, but Brian Shaw seems like the next Assistant Coach to break out.
Before the Draft:
1. Trade Singler for Jason Richardson and the Philly Pick. Flip the Philly Pick to the Nuggets for Wilson Chandler and their pick. Philly gets rid of JRich's dead weight (He's injured and old). Chandler hasn't been a star in the playoffs thus far and if the Nuggets lose in the first round, I think he's the SF to go. He's a good defender still coming back from an injury. Perfect utility 3.
2. Trade Stuckey for Eric Gordon. This has been a common theme amongst the board. Getting Eric Gordon (if healthy) is a steal. However, his health is a big risk. PHX looks like our only competitors here and PHX will probably wait until free agency to look at Mayo.
3. Trade CV and Jonas to the Raptors for Ross and Bargs. The Raps are not high on Ross and they need to shed Bargs. I think with the right compliment, Bargs could be a better version of CV coming off the bench. Ross is a good asset to have. I say we give him a chance.
Roster Pre-Draft
Knight/
Gordon/Ross/English
Chandler/Middleton
Monroe/Bargs
Drummond/Slava
Draft Night:
1. With our Pick take Shabazz. With the way our new team is, he's not a starter for the first couple years. We'll allow him to be our 6th man and earn his minutes. Our second unit is both young and exciting.
2. Take Myck Kabongo with the Nuggets pick in the first. Pure point guard. Could be a great backup in the future.
3. Buy the Heat first rounder and take Ledo. Let's lock the kid up for 4 years. He won't come over this season as we'll have him play overseas. He's going to be an asset in this league at the very least.
Post Draft Night:
Knight/Kabongo
Gordon/Shabazz/Ross/English
Chandler/Middleton
Monroe/Bargs
Drummond/Slava
Overseas: Ledo
Free Agency:
1. Sign Beno Udrih 3yr/12 - He can distribute and shoot. I really like his game. Would be an excellent backup point, especially with our trigger happy 2nd unit. Also an average defender.
2. Sign Brandan Wright to a 4yr/20 mill deal. Perfect compliment to Bargs. The shotblocker we need in the second unit.
3. Sign Jerry Stackhouse to the Vet min. He doesn't fill a need. But he's a tough vet. I think all our guys can learn a great deal from him.
Opening Night Starting Lineup:
Knight
Gordon
Chandler
Monroe
Drummond
Balanced offensively and Top 5 defensively.
2nd Unit:
Udrih
Shabazz
Middleton
Wright
Bargs
Weak interior D, but with a shot blocking presence and crazy gifted offensively.
Insurance Players:
Kabongo
English
Ross
Stackhouse
Slava

What happened to J-Rich? You traded for him and then he disappeared. My biggest problems with the plan:
Big question mark at starting PG.
$14M+ for the next 3 years on Eric Gordon (who's starting to look like the next Ben Gordon). I don't see Dumars making this move given recent history.
$13M+ for the next 2 years on Chandler + J-Rich (I'd rather keep Singler and offer 10-14M to free agents like Teague/Iggy/Mayo/J-Smith/Tyreke)
$11M+ for the next 2 years on Bargnani (I don't know much about Ross, but he better be really good if you expect Gores to pay Barg 22 million dollars over the next 2 years)

Good point on Jrich. He's out until 2014 and we'd probably use the injury exception on him to sign a vet min player like Stack. It bumps our salary cap up a bit, but he's a Spartan so I can see him ending his career here.
In 2014, Bargnani and Jrich become expirings, almost 20mill in total. If we feel like we need a PG by that time, we can try and get one with that extra cap space + Knight.

not bad CGC. we would need to go after a vet pg, i still think Chancey coming back would be ideal or some how getting andre miller

While a lot of that rope a dope pick trading might not fly, it's one of the more competent mock ups on here, I appreciate your logic on all the moves.
I'm not sure if Miami has a first round pick this year? I know they sent a lot of future picks out to Cleveland and Toronto.
I'm curious what New Orleans asking price for Gordon is? Stuckey may not be enough.
I liked the Toronto trade idea. Ross could really help make the team more athletic.
I also prefer to give Knight another stab at the PG position. From what I've been reading, the kid was injured in some capacity almost all season long, which is the reason his games were so up and down. His averages really didn't paint an accurate picture. He would have 20+ point games, then have sub 10 point games, and all the injuries were leg/foot related. I absolutely want to give this kid another shot.
Anyways, nice post, Combo. I enjoyed reading and discussing it.

But would Billups take the "chancey" to win elsewhere?

Hate to be the hater here, but all the initial moves smell like homer. Two years of a not ideal contact (JRich) doesn't net you a lotto pick from a team that doesn't have tax issues and needs young talent. JRich makes $6m a year, and he's not a bad player if healthy...not a toxic contract, and Philly is like $30m under the cap.
And Wilson Chandler has one of the best contracts in the league. He's averaging 12/10 but hasn't shot that well in three playoff games...so since he hasn't been 'dominant' in the playoffs, Denver wants to trade him for the right to move up a few picks in a crappy draft? No way we'd get Denver's pick back in this scenario. (Also, do people think the rest of the NBA doesnt know that Chandler is a good player and a great trade asset? Give other teams some credit).
Where do you get that the Raptors don't like Terrence Ross? They just took him in the high lotto and he had a nice season, did all they hoped he would. I get that trading Bargs for CV saves them a year of terrible contacts, but I don't think they'd have top take back our massive mistake and give up their 2nd best prospect, who's under contract for less than $3m per for the next three years. This move is more realistic than the other two but it's still best case scenario for us.

In this scenario we're also getting rid of CVs contract, saving $9m, so we'd be getting Ross in exchange for that extra $13m of terrible contract.

i'm honestly all for Bargs at the price of Ross. Bargs with the right motivation can be a very very good offensive player and at least decent defensive player. When you add that he's a immediate compliment to Dre and moose, and you get ross, it almost seems too sweet of a deal. His contract also ends right before we need to resign Dre and knight i believe.
Knight and Ross backcourt defensively /athletically would be hard to match up with

*face palm lol
honestly the homer in me says yes, but i understand your point. i really think Chancey would be open to returning to detroit, especially if it seems like we are 1 or 2 players away from real contention. depending on what we do in FA, i could at least see him considering it.

Damn, damn, damn...I was with you until I read this...
ComboGuardCity wrote: 3. Trade CV and Jonas to the Raptors for Ross and Bargs.
Bargnani is complete butt crack, no way do we need to trade for him and his expense contract...Even with Ross included, Bargnani still breaks the deal apart...

I can see where you're coming from the sixers point of view, but I disagree. They have 46 mill already consumed next year and they're going to go after Bynum as well.
In regards to Chandler, Its clear Gallo is the better 3 for them. Yes hes out until the asb, but I think Karl likes Brewer and Iguodala more than WC. I'll take whoever is let go.
The Raptors have Derozan, Gay, Fields signed long term. All indications point to them being high on Anderson as well. If they want to get rid of Bargs, they will give up an Asset. Ross is their only expendable asset.
Are my trades best case scenario? Absolutey. But I don't think there would be any league outcry over any of those deals.

i do think Wilson chandler will be a lot better next year, he's coming off a hip surgery. If Denver loses, Miller will also be available.

If you had called this not a 'plan' but a 'series of the best possible trades for us that are vaguely plausible,' I see where you're going. There's not point in arguing plausibility, but I'll just argue that the first two would be really really bad choices from the other team's point of view, though they'd be great for us.
--The 76ers do have $46m committed, but that puts them $25m under the cap. So even if they resign Bynum starting at $18m, then they have $7m. Not sure why a young rebuilding team would give up a lotto pick to be $13m instead of $7m under the tax.
--Wilson Chandler might not be as good as Gallo, but three things get in the way of your proposal being reasonable: the Nugs are in good shape tax-wise, every team can use a great 3rd wing on a good-value contract, and Chandler's production and contract merit a bigger prize than moving up 12ish spots in a very weak, middle-heavy draft. Imagine your a Nugs' fan and consider whether or not you'd blow a gasket at that return.
The Raptors' deal is more reasonable since it drops a year's worth of Bargs, but it'd be foolish to give up a guy you just drafted 7th overall just to save that kind of money. We gave up a lotto-protected 1st to cut Ben Gordon and save even more money. Plus they're not in tax danger, and Derozan and Gay allow them to let Ross develop as their 3rd wing. Fields isn't part of their plans--he was the worst signing of last year and was signed only to screw the Knicks in the Steve Nash sweepstakes--and Anderson is already like 30 years old. He was a MSU Spartan in like 2000.

Probably my favorite plan so far...if I posted a plan this is relatively similar to what I would include.
Only things:
1. I don't see Toronto giving up on Ross so quickly, especially because Colangelo loves Bargnani.
2. I'd consider taking KCP at 7.
3. Would rather go after Maynor or Chauncey than Udrih.

I'll pass. I dont get why everyone loves Chandler so much. I'm not trading a lotto pick for him (The Philly pick in your scenario). I'll take Try Burke in the draft. This is a point guards league now. I've seen what having a guy like Steph Curry can do for a team. I'll take that with Burke (he's not curry but he's a LEGIT PG).

Nice job CGC. Some of it seems unrealistic, and at the end it almost seems like we'd have too many guys (which actually can be a problem especially for a new coach), but I like the general idea. I agree the Chandler is going to be the Denver wing that is available, Fornier seems primed for a minute increase and him/Iggy/Brewer is enough to hold out for Gallo to get healthy. Chandler is also the best fit for the Pistons.
I also like the idea of trading for Gordon and still going for a wing, specifically a scorer, in the draft. We had some recent success with gradually bring guys along. Knight on the other hand is still a work in progress but worth waiting on. And history suggests that Gordon will miss games.
Some of the latter stuff seems like too much. If we can get Ross for just a Bargs dump that would be awesome, but I'm not sure Toronto would be too into that. All in all though nice perspective.

Kevin Love is my dream offseason. A deal including Monroe would at least make Minnesota pick up the phone.
Starting 5 of
Knight
Shabazz
Chandler
Love
Drummond
