Stories have popped recently about the Clippers feud among the ranks (CP3 wants to play slow down, grind it out playoff basketball, Jordan and Griffin care more about YouTube and are tired of hearing CP3 tell them what to do). This brings up two points:

1) is CP3 still a slam dunk to resign with the Clippers?

2) is there a team that's a better match than Detroit for him to join?


Clippers pros- it's LA, they have some young bigs who can jump. Cons- it's the Clippers and they are owned by Sterling. Their cast is either aging vets or young guys who don't seem interested in learning how to win. The West is stronger than the East. They are capped out.

Detroit pros- Eastern conference, young players with upside who just want to win, flexibility to add talent (a lotto pick plus whatever other FA CP3 wants), an owner with LA ties (if the whole Hollywood thing appeals to CP3). Cons- it's Detroit.

Knight + #7 + CV + Stuckey for CP3 in a sign and trade would be perfect for us.

Then we'd have our cap space to sign whatever free agent wings he wants (or who he could get)

IF Chris Paul wants to leave the Clippers and IF he wants to come to Detroit we have the pieces to make it happen. I'd give up everyone except Drummond

I wonder what Phil Jackson thinks of Byron Scott as Coach? I think I remember reading about CP3 and him playing golf together back in the day...

IF Phil Jackson is VP of Basketball Operations and we have Brian Shaw as coach... CP3 could force a sign and trade to Detroit.... you never know what could happen....remember when Grant Hill "forced" a sign and trade to Orlando.

Hill could have left for Orlando and signed outright... but he "chose" the sign and trade so that he got the full max AND so we got something in return.

CP3 could do the same for the Clippers...

If he wants to re-sign to the Clippers, he'll re-sign there. If he wants to sign elsewhere, then he'll go where he wants to, by sign-and-trade or not. But the price will not be that high in case of s&t.

Houston and Utah can offer max money, better destinations than the Pistons for sure if he wants to leave the Clippers.

I'm pretty sure the salaries don't have to match on a sign & trade when we're far enough under the cap to sign him outright, so we could just send the Clips the rights to both of our 2nd rounders and a huge trade exception. They're welcome to Stuckey or CV if they want, but I'd have to imagine they wouldn't. No way we send back any real assets like BK or our lotto pick, though; it would be a package similar to what Cleveland received from Miami in the sign & trade for LeBron.

We aren't getting Paul. Give it up.

Under the new CBA if a player agrees to a sign and trade he gets the exact same contract he would get signing with his new team outright. The most we can offer Paul is 4 years at lower raises than the Clippers can even if we do a sign and trade.

If Drummond and Monroe each had a couple more years in the league and in their development, then Paul coming to us would give us a serious shot at a championship. He'd totally be willing to come to Detroit in that situation.

The thing is we're 2-3 years away from that. Drumroe sure looks like they're each on the way, but the team is going to have to be patient and make intelligent choices so that when they are ready, WE are ready and have the assets and cap space to make our move.

In the meantime, I've always enjoyed watching a young Detroit sports team that clearly has the key core young pieces in place develop into championship slowly and methodically over a period of 4 to 5 seasons. I can totally see it coming with this Pistons team, and I'm pretty excited about going along for this ride.

It's not a case of "LA or Detroit", despite your very narrow scope.

He would probably prefer going to some place like Houston, where they already have a playoff ready team, another bonafide allstar in Harden, and the added benefit of zero state tax, which would leave millions of tax dollars in his wallet over the years.

Basically, it's a pipe dream. Players who want to win now aren't enticed by waiving around lottery picks.

Get the coach Chris Paul wants and the other free agents he wants. That's how you attract him.

Honestly, people act like we're the only team Paul would have to go with even if he decided he wanted out of LA.

1. Sign and Trade is Dead.
2. Clippers, Hawks (Dwight Team-up), Rockets would all be ahead of us in terms of signing potential

Thanks for clarifying this. As others have said, The Hawks/Rockets are more enticing.

Some of you guys are losing your noodle...The core of our team is too young to entice Paul to come here...Monroe, Knight, and Drummond are all 22yrs old and younger!..Paul is 27 or 28...

Dallas is likely in that mix as well.

Other incentive for him to come to Detroit: he idolized Isiah Thomas. We can't be that bad of a franchise to him. Not to mention, Russell Westbrook resigned in freaking Oklahoma. For every star FA who makes his decision based on warm weather and attractive cities there are plenty who don't use that criteria.

The Rockets have better pieces than us and good flexibility. Frankly, our pieces are good enough to work with CP3 because if you get an MVP candidate like him and already have a nice front court it is much easier to get the other necessary role players with cap space. The Clippers need some sort of good luck, like if Boston gets rid of PP and trades KG to them and they pick up PP as a cheap FA.

It's quite unlikely he leaves LA even though they don't seem like they are improving to beat other Western teams and and are sort of capped out in potential. I wish Phil Jackson would help in player recruitment too. In CP3's case he would be helpful in making him hate the Clippers/Sterling. I would say there is a small chance. He's the FA of the Pistons' dreams so they had better try hard.

Tony Allen/Stuckey/Knight
Middleton/drafted SF
Monroe/Jerebko
Drummond/??

Both are Western Conference teams. If the Clippers can push him anywhere, they will want to send him East so they play him less. If it becomes apparent to them that he's not going to return, they might try to help "sell" Detroit onto CP3.

But yeah, Knight and #7 seems a bit much for CP3.

Knight and a HUGE TPE might be more like it.

That all said, the chances of CP3 coming here are extremely thin....

Things simply don't work that way. If he wants to leave, the team he's leaving isn't going to have a say where he goes.
