Off-Season Three Way.

With everyone making "Off-season plan" threads I thought it'd be fun to make a thread where people can post three plans; Perfect, what Joe SHOULD do and what Joe WILL do.

Perfect:

We get the No. 1 pick in the Draft and can get ANY Free Agent we can afford. Also we can have any living Coach.

What Joe SHOULD do:

You jump in Joe's brain "Being John Malkovich" style and get to control this whole off-season. You can sign who you want, but some FA's won't be coming to Detroit (CP3, Dwight). Also you are drafting at pick 7 and pick a realistic Coach.

What Joe WILL do:

What you think will do at pick 7 and what FA's will he choose to sign? Again CP3 and Dwight are not coming to the Pistons unless a miracle happens. Also what Coach is Joe and Phil going decide on?

Agreed, Gores is too cheap too pay off Villanueva.

Whether that's true or not, it's still a bad idea.

CV is worth far more as an expiring deal that could grease the wheels on a trade this season.

Perfect:
Get #1, draft Mclemore
Find the perfect coach for our young team.
Lose Stuckey
Sign CP3

What Joe Should Do
Take Oladipo, Shabazz or CJ McCollum with #7
Lose Stuckey
Sign needed role players
Save cap space for trade helping out teams with high cap

What Joe will do
Take BPA at #7
Keep Stuckey and CV to help with future trades
Sign a role player or two that won't please many on this board
Save most of his cap for future trades and Monroe's extension

First off, great topic, Jared; looks like too much fun to pass up, so here's my best take —

PERFECT:
- Hire Phil Jacksoon as President of Basketball Operations
- Hire Jerry Sloan as Head Coach
- Draft Lottery: Orlando #1 takes Noel, Cleveland #2 takes Porter, we land #3 and take Ben McLemore (who we would have taken #1, but we get him on a cheaper deal for taking him two spots later; hey, you said dream scenario, right?)
- 2nd Round: Draft Ricky Ledo (SG, Providence) @ #38
- Sign Iggy for ~$14M per year (veteran leader on our uber-young team who can also play "point-forward" at times and has shown willingness to let offense center on other players, like Mac and Moose)
- Amnesty CV so we have extra cap space to ...
- Trade Clippers second round pick to OKC for Kendrick Perkins and Perry Jones III
- Sign Earl Clark as stretch 4 / "hustle guy" off bench (~$6M per year)

LINEUP:
PG: Knight / Stuckey
SG: McLemore / Ledo / English
SF: Iggy / Jones III / Singler / Middleton
PF: Monroe / Clark / Jerebko
C: Drummond / Perkins / Slava

WHAT JOE SHOULD DO:
- Hire Mike Budenholzer as Head Coach (think he's the next Thibbodeau, i.e. long time top assistant who's ready for the big chair)
- DRAFT: Shabazz Muhammad @ #7; Use 2nd rounders on Ricky Ledo @ #38 and a Euro-Stash at #55
-TRADE: Stuckey & Jerebko for Eric Gordon (we take the chance on EG 'cuz we have to secure a true #1 offensive option somehow this offseason).
- FREE AGENCY: Overpay for a quality and versatile bench — Paul Millsap (~$11M), Devin Harris (~$5M), Al-Farouq Aminu (~$5M)

LINEUP:
PG: Knight / Harris
SG: Gordon / Ledo / English
SF: Muhammad / Aminu / Singler / Middleton
PF: Monroe / Millsap / CV
C: Drummond / Slava

WHAT JOE WILL DO:

- Hire Brian Shaw as Head Coach (per suggestion of Phil Jackson)
- DRAFT: Victor Oladipo @ #7; Nate Wolters @ #38; Euro-Stash @ #55
- FREE AGENCY: Max deal for Josh Smith (upon which the heads of half the posters on this board simultaneously explode); Chris Kaman (~$8M per year, at which point the other half of the posters on this boards heads simultaneously explode).

LINEUP:
PG: Knight / Stuckey / Wolters
SG: Oladipo / Stuckey / English
SF: Smith / Singler / Middleton
PF: Monroe / Smith / Jerebko / CV
C: Drummond / Monroe / Kaman / Slava

Perfect

Easy - hire Phil Jackson as President of Basketball Operations... with that comes Brian Shaw as Coach. Joe Dumars hangs around to collect whatever pay packet Gores gives him

Draft - #1 = McLemore... 2 second rounders get traded and we somehow land Glen Rice Jr

Free Agency = CP3 comes here, Billups and Big Ben come back for minimum veteran contracts...

sign J.J Redick to come off the bench at a reasonable salary

We trade CV-DNP, Stuckey and Singler to Denver for McGee, Brewer (Sign and Trade) and Andre Miller

Drummond/McGee/Slava/Wallace
Monroe/Jerebko
Brewer/Middleton/Rice Jr
Mclemore/Redick/Knight/Billups
CP3/Knight/Miller/Billups

Still not great up front but such is life - can't fix everything in a single off-season... even in a perfect world :-)

We've got CP3, perimeter shooters, a wing defender... big man depth...

One more trade completes the picture and Domination is the order of the day for a long time to come!

What Joe Should Do

Hire Obradovic... swing for the fences time!

Draft - BPA regardless of position

Free Agency - waive Stuckey and amnesty CV-DNP. If they're not part of the solution long term (and they're not) they are part of the problem... time to GTFO

Spend wisely... and try to use our salary cap space to get young prospects and picks from teams looking at a tax bill! Teams have been fairly wise with spending but some could use a little help getting under the threshold... we should help them IF we get assets

It's cool to think the Thunder model of building works... it's only worked for the Thunder though!

It's cool to think the Heat/Laker model works... but we're not a destination for the best free agents!

So take the Boston approach. Draft wisely, spend wisely, acquire a collection of assets that you can use to acquire a stud player...

What WILL Joe Do?

He'll play it safe IMO... small moves here and there that don't impact the culture or the win column in a very meaningful way...

Not to sound pessimistic or anything but over the last few seasons Joe hasn't done much to inspire hope in me... correcting obvious mistakes and drafting the obvious choice isn't something to be happy about!

I'd love to be wrong... I'd love for Joe to once again build a contender here.... but with every passing off-season it seems we get further and further away... it seems it will take years to get out of this hole because the reputation of this franchise is so damaged we can't land a quality batch of free agents in a single off-season!

Those perfect scenarios are not fun at all. Mine is better :D

We obviously win the lottery.
Charlotte is desperate to get a franchise player and they draft McLemore at #3, with Burke going to Orlando at #2.

So we trade #1 (Noel) + Singler + Slava + English + Middleton + we buy a late 1st for 3 million for them and we remove the protection from our pick to them for MKG and #3 (McLemore).

We amnesty CV and waive Stuckey.

Drummond
Monroe
MKG
McLeMore / Knight

Seeing that team Phil Jackson decides to coach for us. And seeing the team and with Phil Jackson as a coach, Chris Paul decides to sign with Detroit to win multiple championships :D. We offer Josh Smith the rest of our cap space and he gladly accepts it, it's almost the max anyways.

Andre Drummond
Greg Monroe / Josh Smith
Kidd-Gilchrist / Jonas Jerebko
Ben McLeMore / Brandon Knight
Chris Paul

Chris Paul $18,668,431
Josh Smith $15,234,515
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist $ 4,809,840
Jonas Jerebko $ 4,500,000
Greg Monroe $ 4,086,454
Ben McLemore $ 3,444,400
Brandon Knight $ 2,793,960
Andre Drummond $ 2,462,400

Rodney Stuckey* $ 4,000,000

$60,000,000

sign a bunch of ring chasers for the minimum to fill the roster and... There we go Dynasty.

I've seen this batted about and it's simply incorrect. If we amnesty CV and leave his cap space open being able to instantly take on salary (and save the other team cap space) is much more valuble than just an expiring CV31. The other team gets to recognize instant cap savings, creates a trade exemption and saves real dollars.

1. perfect
Nerlens Noel and Chris Paul and whatever-whatever.

2. should!
Stuckey and Middleton for Afflalo
English to the West for a 2nd
Kravstov to the West for a 2nd
Change Charlotte pick to 2014 unprotected and get their 2013 2nd
Trade all 2nd's of 7 years (11) to Atlanta for 17th and 18th picks
Trade Jerebko and unprotected 2016 and unprotected 2018 to Utah for 14th and 21st
#7 A.Len (or maybe R.Gobert)
#14 D.Schroeder (or maybe M.Carter-Williams)
#17 G.Dieng
#18 M.Kabongo
#21 D.McDermott
Iggy $60m/4
T-Mac $7m/2
Daye $7m/2
Buy-out Villanueva (Gores gets a $6-7m caphold instead of double-dipping. Saves $ for Moose next year)
Billups $5m/2
BigBen $5m/2
Extend Moose $80m/5 (not quite the max, right?)

Knight/Schroeder
Afflalo/McGrady
Iguodala/Daye
Monroe/Singler
Drummond/Len
Scrubs: Kabongo, Billups, McDermott, BigBen, Dieng

Top-10 Team in League in various categories
passing
shooting
ball-handling
post scoring
perimeter defense
post defense
rim protection
rebounding
bodies who can guard star bigs
bodies who can guard star wings
bodies who can run the offense
the double pg line-up
the double center line-up
bodies who can play the stretch-4

They would pull together and get hot to end the season.
I think make the ECF.
The following season would maybe go further.
It's a 2 year plan. No FA's or draft picks the following season.

3. What I think Joe wll do...
#7 draft Shabazz
sign Josh Smith to the max
re-sign Jose Calderon for a bit much
keep Stuck and CV
pray that non-factors like Middleton improve (which they could)
sign a couple scrubs. a pg and a c would make sense and I want to think Joe would at least do that...
sign an obscure wing who Langlois makes out to be a free Oladipo and who doesn't last a month.

Also I agree with you on Joe not garnering much trust in the last few offseasons. Oh well hopefully we hit the jackpot this offseason.

Those "Salary Dump" super trades rarely happen and none have really been anything big since the Pau trade. I'd rather Amnesty him and get another FA that can impact our team.
