Hearing from multiple sources that Mavs likely to trade the No. 13 pick. Want to save cap space for Dwight Howard run ...

Would this package do it for Dallas and does it look good for us?

I like the idea. I am not sure if there is legit legs to them basically giving away the pick. I believe they owe the Thunder a draft pick in like 4 years. I think if they don't get something they really love. I think it makes most sense to send it that way.

Whats Marions salary?

He'd be a good backup SF. I don't think he's any answer at the starting SF spot though. And when you figure who we draft at 13 is going to be a bench player too, is giving up our capspace for 2 bench players worth it?

edit:

yeah, so I looked up his contract....8 mil this year and 9 mil next year for a 35 yr old backup SF, all just to get the 13th pick in a bad draft?

No thanks.

I LOVE this idea. Marion may be old but he's still better than any SF that we have on this team. This draft isn't terrible, there just isn't a superstar. The 13th pick in the draft could have great value. We could get any combination of the following players Bazz, McCollum, Bennett, Len, MCW, Zeller. I'm actually ok with this.. Furthermore, Marion can be dealt by the trade deadline 2014. Maybe he'll even retire prior to the end of his contract??

Before anyone else (Vege) writes it — yes, this trade can't happen at the draft itself. Dallas would pick for us at #13, we'd pick for them at #38 & #56, and then the trade would be consummated after July 1st (once Marion opted into his contract and we had the cap space to absorb him). It's just a matter of semantics.

That said, count me in. I think this is exactly how we should look to use some of our cap space, and I like this scenario better than absorbing Kendrick Perkins to land #29 or PJ3. Even if both draft picks wind up being bench players (as Goldtop wrote), so what? They'll be cheap bench players on rookie deals with lots of upside, and we'll still have a load of cap space left to use in free agency (in fact, Marion's salary would almost exactly replace CV if we were to amnesty him).

My hit lists for the two picks would be slightly different from Retro's, though —

#8 — Burke, Bennett, McCollum (pretty much BPA of whomever slides, 'cuz someone always slides)
#13 — Bazz, Saric, Schroeder, Zeller (also depending on what position we took at #8)

I really don't want MCW because his shot is so suspect and we desperately need scorers. Otherwise, I'd be thrilled to come away from the draft with two of those guys plus a chunk of cap space left to spend in free agency.

I like it. It makes sense. We aren't going to make a splash in FA, let's be honest, and we have cap space. You can amnesty Charlie, who makes 8.5 for the next year, and it becomes virtually a dead wash in terms of cap. This is the way to use our space effectively....to take on bad contracts while acquiring young prospects. And his big expiring actually becomes an asset after next year. It's virtually just a cap placeholder while we develop guys. Marion is also a vet and good lockerroom guy...something we could really use quite honestly. Corey Magette ain't cutting it for token veteran presence.

I know that everyone wants to just trade Jonas or Max and a second to move back into the first but that's not how it works. You gotta take some risks and give some to get talent. If you could land Bazz at 8 and then a PG like Schroeder or MCW at 13 I'd be really pleased. You have a young starting five to work with.

Just add Jonas and I'm all for it.

When was the last time a deal like that actually happened?

Marion has a trade kicker and incentives, we would pay him ~11 million.

Marion stated he will not go to a rebuilding team and while he can't veto a trade and he can't refuse to show up in Detroit, he can and will be an **** and if we actually expect to use him on court we will be in big trouble.

Dallas does not need to dump Marion to pursue Howard, they only need a few million in cap space, dealing their pick and a small salary would be enough. Jared Cunningham for example.

Marion was a very important part of their championship team, I doubt they send him to a rebuilding team against his will especially because they don't have to.

If anything that rumor clear the way for us to pursue O.J. Mayo.
