How Active is Joe, really?

Chad Ford seems to have a decent tracker/idea of what we're doing most years.....yet he has a TON of trade chatter about, well, most other teams. No mention of the Pistons anywhere.

Is Joe just content to pick whoever falls to #8?

Is he trying to trade up?
Is he exploring trade down scenarios?
Is he looking to move Knight, Stuckey, or CV?
We didn't even invite KCP in for a workout??

When the draft is over, I just don't wanna hear him say, "well, we had a list of guys we wanted, but they were all gone by the time we were on the clock to pick. But we really like <insert drafted player's name> a lot too! We're happy with how the draft shaped up."

FYI, this is how we got Knight - for all you Knight-bashers

Dumars said the team's focus was on drafting a big man, but when the top bigs were gone by the time the Pistons were on the clock, the choice to draft Knight was an easy decision.

Tonight we had targeted big guys initially, and we said if those guys were gone, we were going to take the guy with the best value. At the point of the eighth pick, the guy with the best value, the best talent on the board, was Brandon Knight. At that point, it was a talent we didn’t think we could pass up. We think the kid has upside. We think he’s tremendously smart. He has one of those incredible work ethics you hear about – hours and hours and hours in the gym. He’s totally dedicated. And what we feel is the most high character guy in the draft.

^I absolutely remember that.

Dumars got totally outmaneuvered on draft day.

I hope it doesn't happen again, but honestly I'm not getting a sense of a clear direction in this draft from Dumars at all.

Agreed. Joe took the guy who had the most hype, not the guy who was the best talent. I don't know if Knight even goes top 10 in a redraft and I don't think that Joe D and Co did a good job scouting non- bigs that draft because they were so locked into improving our front court. If it happens again this draft, I will be very disappointed. I don't want Joe to blindly take the guy who falls

Mind you, we would have ended up with Biyombo if we hadn't been outmaneuvered, and he hasn't been very impressive. TT was picked too high, and we couldn't ever have traded high enough to be in a position for him.

Still though, Dumars got outpositioned and I hope he's more on it this time. It helps that we aren't going for a big man (necessarily) this time.

I was tempted to post a picture of a sloth in reply to the question.

The Pistons are always quiet about trades until they happen. So, if something is in the works, there's a good chance we won't hear about it until after it happens, or after it falls through.

Joe pretty much HATES trading players because as a former player himself he knows how it is on players and their families. He didn't break-up the championship core until it was too late because the Bad Boy Pistons were broken up too soon.

lol what? top 10? Are you insane? It's pretty obvious he wouldn't go in the lottery at all and that's not even arguable.

It worked out okay though. If I remember right, Cats outjumped us for Biyombo and Kings traded down because they thought good guards would be gone and they stuck with Jimmer.

Yet he's still making the same mistakes, as evidenced by not even working out KCP, who woule be a fit and is projected to go #9 in most mocks....

I think Joe D decided against bringing him in because he doesn't seem like he will be a 10 year starter. I think there are a lot of guys with more potential than him. I ask myself if I could come up with 10 guys i'd take over him regardless of position which I did easily. The guys are: Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller, Alex Len, Anthony Bennett, Trey Burke, CJ McCollum, Shabazz Muhammed, Ben McLemore, Victor Oladipo and Otto Porter. It makes sense not to even bring him in unless you plan on trading down which I don't see Joe D doing.

In no order, I'd take;
Irving, Kanter, Jonas V, T. Thompson, K. Thompson, Farhied, Parsons, Leonard, Kemba, Harris, Vucevic. So I'd say Knight would go at the bottom of the lottery

Hey everyone, let's give up on a player and draft one older than him!

Hate this redraft BS.

There was no way in the world you draft Ken Faried at #8 in 2011 and Luckily there were GMS dumb enough(I shouldnt say dumb enough, they had bigger needs at those positions) to take Byombo and Vesley ahead of us. We're acting as though Leonard isn't benefitting from playing with The big 3 as well. I wonder how he'd fare on the Bobcats a team with no future, or Klay with GSW where he has the freedom to shoot as much as he wants.

btw If they drafted Byombo, THERE WOULD BE NO DRUMMOND.

Oh, and regarding the Knight redraft, (almost fell out of my chair) you guys rely too much on hasty generalizations and hyperbole.

Moderately active. My sources tell me he went for a light jog this morning.

^Dumars hasn't jogged in years. Unless it was to the toilet after finding and eating year old Chinese in the back of his fridge.

Redrafts are definitely faulty, which is why nobody brings up Wade when talking about the Darko situation, and why nobody should bring up Leonard or Faried here.

My point about Dumars getting outmaneuvered wasn't really that it turned out horribly for us (Biyombo would have been a worse pick than Knight and we weren't getting Thompson), just that Dumars isn't the guy who enacts a plan and gets it done anymore. He got out-positioned.

^^ I wanted Wade with the 2nd pick and everyone thought I was crazy... Same with Faried, not because I'm some genius but because they were MONSTERS in college.
