It doesn't mean that in the slightest.

I prefer Monroe, especially when you look at the age difference. I like Monroe's post-up ability. That said, Smith also has some post-up ability (although he's clearly not as good as Monroe) and he's got better defense. That said, I think we can get more for Monroe, so I unfortunately think he should be traded for an elite PG/SF. Watching Smith/Drummond rejecting shots will be really fun next season. I hope we at least try the Smith at SF experiment before trading Monroe though. That said, I think all signs point towards us trading Monroe in the near future.

Maybe, maybe not. Tying your franchise up close to $100 million with two players wouldn't be smart if Monroe and Smith have poor chemistry and are a poor fit together.

So Drummond will leave in 2 years?

Smoove will be an expiring contract by the time Drummond needs a new contract.

This^^^ a lot can happen in 2 years.

So you're going to stop his development as a starter for a few more wins a quick exit in the 1st round of the PO and Dumars saving his jobs when he has been terrible and deserves to be fired?
What of this actually makes sense to you Pistons fans?
And also handing your top8 protected lottery pick to Charlotte, when you lack precisely a franchise talent type of player and there are some of them in next year's Draft.
This move, and everything that will come with it, it's just for Dumars's sake, not the Pistons's.
I wouldn't be happy as a Detroit fan with any of this.

Except it won't stop Drummond's development as a starter since Smith will be starting at SF.

Ok then not even a quick PO exit, just a treadmill team.
Wonderful.
Smith could work as a SF with a PF that can shoot the 3ball and also with a creator in the backcourt.
Detroit has none of those things, Knight is a terrible decision maker, and Monroe is a shaky shooter.
But hey guys, if you want to try, just because Dumars needs to save his ass and are happy with it...
Whatever, this happens when FOs and owners loses their patience and start doing stupid things.
Unless you trade Monroe now, and yes I know it's not gonna happen, before his value drop, this move is terrible.

Woah woah there.
I am NOT happy with this move. Not in the slightest. If you'd read anything in any other thread on this subject you'd know that I've been vocally against this signing.
I'm just arguing against the notion that it means we won't be keeping Monroe/Drummond.

So teams can only be effective by building them around the cookie-cutter notions that you and many others around here (RealGM as a whole) seem to share? I don't buy it. We haven't really seen a team with the kind of talent and size Detroit has at SF, PF, and C in Smith, Monroe, and Drummond lately so it's hard to say they definitely won't be able to win. It could succeed, fail, or fall somewhere in between. We don't know that yet and don't have a lot to base anything off of.
Smith won't be spending all of his minutes at SF anyways. Monroe and Drummond aren't playing 48 minutes a night and there'll be a ton of opportunities to put Smith at PF with Monroe or Drummond at C. That opens up some time for Singler at SF who's an average option but not one that will hurt the team (in that kind of backup role at least).
For what it's worth I'm not particularly excited or disappointed about Detroit signing Smith. I can understand why they did it though and it's not unexpected. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it plays out. There's risk but a team like Detroit and the shape they're in has to take some chances.

Just trying to make this easy for some:
Drummond 28, Monroe 20
Monroe 14, Smith 20, CV or Jerebko or Mitchell 14
Smith 14, Singler 20, Middleton or Jerebko or Mitchell 14
Monroe = 34
Smith = 34
Drummond = 28 (only a sophmore in the NBA)
Singler 20
And the remaining minutes at PF or SF filled by CV, Jerebko, Mitchell or Middleton depending on who earns minutes in training camp.
The idea that Smith's signing forces a Monroe trade is an assumption based on the "whimsical beliefs and ideas made by arm-chair GMs on forums such as this one"

I somehow have a weird feeling that CV will play his heart out this year, earning him a $15m/4yr deal the next year.

Only way Drummond's leaving is if he forces his way out in four seasons, taking a qualifying offer and then skipping town (which never happens if the team is willing to pay the max), or he has a career ending injury.
Drummond isn't going anywhere, friend.

That would be fantastic! He could either A- help us to a solid playoff run, or B- get traded for some decent value.
